Viewing Shared Libraries in Photo Browser

Is there any way to view shared libraries in photo browser, so I can more easily mail photos using the Mail app, not the iPhoto mailer? All I want is to see the shared library in the mail photo browser, without having to export, import, and all kinds of other hassles.

You can certainly create a library on an external drive or have multiple libraries, though only one (system library) will sync with iCloud Photo library, though I assume that is per user - not sure how it might affect things if you are using differernt iCloud credentials.

  • Shared libraries in Photos 1.0

My wife and I have traditionally shared a single library in iPhoto (stored on an external drive). Can we continue to do so in Photos? Are there any complications when it comes to shared libraries and iCloud Photo Library? (I could just plow ahead and try it out, but it'd be my head if I did anything to compromise our existing  library of family photos.) Tips from more adventurous upgraders most welcome.

  • Why am I missing music when I view shared libraries from my iOS device? Content is in tact on windows PC andbonapplevTV but not in iPad or iPhone shared libraries...

Running latest iTunes 11.something on Windows 7. Music is located on a network drive. All music is accessible through iTunes on my PC and on Apple TV but when I switch to shared libraries on iPad or iPhone, only music that exists in iTunes playlists appear. Im sharing all of my music but it doesn't seem to be working. Can somebody help?

You can only add music to iTunes Match from your iTunes library on your computer, not from your iOS device.  If you have music on your iPad that is not on your computer, you'll have to import it to your iTunes library on your computer to add it to iTunes Match.
Music purchased from the iTunes store can be imported directly to your iTunes library by authorizing your computer for the Apple ID(s) used to purchase the music (in Store>Authorize This Computer), then connecting the iPad to your computer, opening iTunes and going to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.  Music from other sources will require using 3rd party software to transfer to your computer, such as Touch Copy.

  • Accessing music and photos from shared libraries in imovie and other apps

ihave a problem that i'm not sure is solvable. i have a mac mini that i use to hold all my music in itunes, photos in iphoto and share this with my other mac by turning on the sharing in itunes and iphoto. this means on my other mac, i can access music and photos using the shared music and photos facility in those programs. however, when i want to add music or photos into imovie using the media tab in imovie on my other mac, it doesn't show the shared libraries. i also have the same problem in final cut pro. is there anyway to make these programs see shared libraries of photos of music that sit on another mac on the network?

    Mac on Andy,
If you copy the photos you wish to use to your iPhoto local library you'll then have access in to them in the media pane of iMovie.
However, iTunes will not allow you to do the same thing with songs.
As a workaround you could enable File Sharing and then mount the mini as a server. In the Finder you'll need to then rummage around in the mini's iTunes library to find the tracks you need, but it should work.

  • ITunes not showing shared libraries?

Since coming to my school, I'm not able to share my shared library with the other kids on my floor, and I can't see theirs. I have music sharing enabled (I haven't changed any of the settings since I left home, where I have had no problems sharing and viewing shared libraries there or anywhere else up to this point). Even when I turn my firewall off, it doesn't work. Every now and then I will try to quit iTunes and it will say 1 user is connected to my account, but only rarely and I can never see anyone else's libraries, although when I use my roommates' laptops, both Mac and Windows, I can see that there are plenty of people sharing their libraries.
What other steps can I try? I was able to check out other peoples' playlists when I was here a few years ago and I miss discovering new music/meeting my neighbors (in a way)!

    Hi Liz,
Sorry to hear you are having a similar problem.  Last night I went to the tool bar at the top of iphoto, clicked on "File",  then clicked "Browse Backups" in the drop down menu.    I have an external hard drive that is set up to Time Machine.   The Browse Backups  opened the iphoto pages in the Time Machine.  I selected a date one day ahead of the day I performed the now infamous update, and it showed my iphoto library as it had existed that day.   I then clicked  "Restore Library" at the bottom right corner of the Time Machine screen.   Roughly 2 hours later my iphoto was back to normal.   When I opened iphoto there was a message saying I need to upgrade my program to be compatible with the new version of iphoto(version 9.2.1).  I clicked "Upgrade" and within seconds it had done whatever upgrading it needed to do.
The only glitch in the restoration was that it restored the library as it appeared last week, so I no longer had photos I had imported this past weekend.   I simply went back to the Browse Backups in the drop down menu,  when Time Machine opened I selected the page showing my pictures from this weekend and again said to Restore Library.   Roughly 45 minutes later the library was restored including the most recent photos.
I am now a happy camper.
I don't know if any of this will be of help to you because your email says you are having trouble with photos imported after the upgrade was performed.   Have you had any pop up notices when you first open iphoto,  that tell you you need an upgrade to be compatible with the new iphoto?     If so have you clicked "upgrade"?
Good luck Liz,  if you have Time Machine running as a back up to your library, maybe you wil be able to get help there, by following my instructions above.   Otherwise,   good luck with your investigations.   I'd be interested in hearing how you make out.

  • Unable to view photo browser to import photos

    Friends,
I'm running FCPX 10.1.  I am unable to easily view the photo browser to import photos.  The screenshot below shows what I see when I click on the photo import pane:
The screenshot below shows what I see when I click on the under photos to display the entire photo (Aperture) library:
    How can I fix this?
    Thanks!
    Steve

I also had the same problem. Then I open iMovie, clicked on the iPhoto and Aperture section. When I got back to FCP X my photos, Gearage Band sections were back. But the photo section must be selected before you quit FCP X. Then open open FCP X, and the photos en Garage Band and other audio effects will be back. But when you select another section like themes or transitions before you quit FCP X, the photo section wil be gone again and had to start the procedure again to get it back. That is my experience of the missing photos and audio effects.

  • No metadata in Photo Stream shared libraries

After uploading images to a Photo Stream shared library, I noticed they do not inclue the IPTC caption, keywords and other metadata, making the process virtually useless. All images are referenced files in Aperture 3.4.5, under Mac OS 10.8.4, with "write metadata to masters" applied. How can you include metadata in Photo Stream shared libraries?
    Thanks!

    Eric,
Now I see - you are asking about "Shared Photo Stream" - I was confused by shared "libraries".
With the "Shared PhotoStream" the only data I am receiving from friends are the EXIF tags - GPS, lens, aperture, etc, none of the IPTC.
When I want to send annotations, I add a comment by pressing the call out badge.
My standard IPTC metedata is also absent after choosing the "Export > Version…" command, and opening the file in the Preview app.
Do you mean, when you are exporting an image from the Photo Straem, or any image? With File > Export > Versions and exporting an image from the library with IPTC as a jpeg, these tags will all show in Previews Inspector.

  • Dates not coming with photos imported from shared libraries

My partner and i both have macs, we both use iphoto. Usually we use the shared photo library features to exchange photos so that we both have all the photos we want.
The problem is that the dates don't follow. I'd actually like to see all the metadata imported (faces etc) but i'll live without that but the dates is a real problem.
I'm pretty sure they used to come with the photos imported from shared libraries, not sure why they stopped... Ideas?

How are you sharing the Libraries? How are you reading the dates?

  • No Edit Command in Photo Browser or Date View

I am seeking to edit the contact book. There is suppose to be and "Edit" choice in the Photo Browser / Date View. However, this choice does not exist for me. I'm thinking that this is suppose to be a drop down menu choice. And am wondering if the program didn't fully install. At the top all I have is the pse icon, the welcome screen icon, then it jumps to "Sign in" "Join Now", "Undo," "Display", and "Editor."

The Organizers menu bar (File, Edit, etc.) wont show if your display is set in Windows to a DPI (dots per inch) larger than 96.
You will have to change the DPI to 96.

  • Apple Mail, Photo Browser, Attachments and Yosemite

    OK,
    Help.
Anytime I want to insert a photo from my iPhoto Library into Apple Mail via Photo Browser in  Yosemite Mail, it crashes.
My preferred method - Via add attachments - Finder/Pictures/Iphoto library doesn't work anymore. It now says Open iPhoto library.
Why does Apple change these things without like checking them out?
Anyone have an advice. I think Yosemite is pretty half baked. I'm a computer consultant and this is the worst release for customers since Leopard.

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
Note:  Since it's Mail that's crashing it's not an iPhoto problem but a Mail/System one.
Log into another user account on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists there.  If it does then it's a system wide issue. If not it's an account issue.
Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. It's a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC to help identify some of the more obvious culprits.

  • Sharing Libraries across accounts on one computer

I'd like to know an easy method to share iPhoto libraries across accounts on one computer. It looks like iPhoto is more or less ignoring this topic. I have searched the web for tips, found some, yet the instructions are complicated and what seemed to be the best one didn't work. Anyone in this forum that can help me?

haha, brian has a hidden message in there.
Anyway, here all the links I have for sharing. The last link for using ACLs is the one I think you are thinking of.
    SHARING IPHOTO LIBRARIES
Sharing libraries between users on the same local network
You can also share a library on the same machine between users the same way.
Sharing libraries between users on the same machine...
-both users must have sharing enabled in their iPhoto Preferences
-both users must be logged in and have iPhoto running
-Remember that you can only view the other library. You can't edit the photos or play the saved slideshows or view the made books or burn them to CD or DVD. The books and slideshows will show up as an album. You can play that album as an "on the fly" slideshow. You can drag images from the sharing library to your library in the source column to import them to your library. You can then edit, add to albums, books, slideshow, etc.

  • Why plugin/addon concept for Runtime Shared Libraries not implemented in Flex?

    Hi All,
I am posting my refined query here in continuation to my post Fundamental and crucial drawback with Flex in Flex India Community as my last refined query was left unanswered though I feel there is a definite sense of purpose to it.
Why plugin/addon concept for Runtime Shared Libraries not implemented in Flex?
Here is why I feel it should be implemented in Flex.
Though Runtime Shared Libraries SWF file can be cached in the client browser and just need to be loaded only once when the user access a Flex application for the first time,
"40-60% of daily visitors to your site come in with an empty cache. Making your page fast for these first time visitors is key to a better user experience."
Qouting from 'Best Practices for Speeding Up Your Web Site' as described in Tenni Theurer's blog post Browser Cache Usage - Exposed!
While still retaining the cacheability of RSL's for compatibility reasons, flex should give the flexibility and thereby enhance performance by offering RSL's as a plugin/addon.
Looking for your comments and insigts on the same.
    Thanks,
    Ram Manoj Kongara.

I finally skimmed through the links you posted.  The terms plugin and addon
are not in either of the articles so I'm unclear what you are suggesting.
The topic seems to be about application performance.  The Flash Player
supports a cross-domain cache of actionscript libraries separate from the
browser cache.  Each official release of Flex contains a set of these
libraries.  As new Flash Player versions or new Flex versions are released,
and users visit sites utilizing those new versions, the browser picks up the
latest Flash Player and the Flash Player picks up the latest Flex libraries.
These days, it only takes a few months for a new Flash Player to achieve
major saturation in browsers although it still takes a bit longer for Flex
    libraries to achieve saturation.
Adobe will soon be hosting these libraries so if you build your application
to leverage these libraries, you will find that the total download from your
server will be minimized, limited to only your application code and assets,
although you might want to serve the libraries in case they are not already
in the cache if you see high latency to the Adobe servers on a cache miss.
The SWF or SWFs you do serve off your servers should be optimized through
normal good application development practices.  Flex provides features such
as deferred instantiation in its ViewStack and Accordion containers to defer
the creation of objects until viewed.  Flex has a ModuleManager to allow you
to not download parts of your application until they are needed.  A
model-view or MVC architecture will make it easier to create modular
boundaries within your application and leverage these features.
If I have not addressed your concerns please describe your issue in more
    detail.

  • Shared libraries?

Is there an option or a solution within Photos to do shared libraries, multiple libraries on one computer and between multiple computers?  I am reading and initially it looks like there is less flexibility for this then there was in iPhoto/Aperature.  And the AD line of "For the first time, iCloud Photo Library gives you access to your entire Mac photo and video library from all your devices" doesn't work, when one iPhoto/Aperature library is 250GB, several others are 25-50GB each, looking at an aggregate over 500GB of media.  Not expecting this to be a DAM, but initially it looks like options are less.  Very hesitant about converting libraries at this point, and I have been running Photos Beta for several months now.
    Advice?

    Thanks.
I figured as much, I was hoping that they would have built some functionality into this for home/small business shared libraries.  With so many homes let alone small businesses that have shared networks that rely on sharing resources, it would seem obvious to build that function, but I guess there are other objectives.
We have been running iPhoto then Aperature for so long and it is integrated into all computers and devices.  Saying that we are not looking for a DAM is because we have managed to make a framework of networked libraries that does what we need, plus it is more hassle to switch to a DAM (plus I can't find one at a price we are willing to pay).
Just going to have to bite the bullet and switch to a DAM sometime soon.
