Viewing stereo tracks in arrange window?

Hello. I created an interleaved stereo audio file. But the track looks graphically like it's mono in the arrange window. Is there a way to have a graphical representation that it is a stereo file (like in Live, Pro Tools, Studio Vision, etc...)? (If I double click on the track, the file editor shows that it's stereo, but I want to see this in the arrange window.)
It's got to be possible, right?
A

no it's not possible or even generally desirable.
at least in PT, files are split stereo only. they are actually 2 mono files linked together. interleaved works differently. for editing, combined view of both sides as one waveform is actually better for editing unless you need to edit one side of the stereo file. in this case you will need to convert it to split stereo.
the interleaved stereo file you see will show sidedness by projecting the channels either side of the mid point which is more than adequate generally. why would you need it to be different from that?

  • How to Collapse Tracks in Arrange Window?

I've been searching this and some other forums, and have a feeling I'm outta luck, but figured I should post a question here before writing up another Feature Request...
Separate from the Hide Track function (which isn't quite what I'm wanting), and separate from creating region-based Folders (which I've only just begun to explore), is there no way to simply designate groups of Tracks in the Arrange window, and then be able to collapse or reveal that particular group with a single click -- in the same way that a folder's contents can be collapsed or revealed in Finder list view?
I'm currently building a Logic project which draws on bits and pieces from 3-4 dozen .aif files, each of which I'm dragging onto a separate Track, and then on each Track am splitting the content into multiple Regions. I'm using color-coding of those individual Regions, along with text labelling, to help distinguish between different kinds of content. I'll then be copying specific Regions down to new Tracks, from which several different composite versions of the material will be outputted.
All this means I'm going to end up with a LOT of Tracks, and it would be a huge organizational help if I could easily collapse/reveal different groups of Tracks at different times, so I was only having to see and scroll through the relevant ones.
But am I correct in understanding that while some of Logic's competitors have this kind of feature, Logic itself -- astoundingly -- does not???

I didn't realize there was the option to delete the source tracks but retain the Folder -- perhaps I'll explore that.

Well, not every piece of software has every feature imaginable - and this hasn't stopped people making music with Logic.
In order to implement this, you'd probably have to introduce some kind of track group which would be similar to region folders ("track folders") in order to group like tracks and therefore fold and unfold the track folders' contents - but this might start to get confusing to have two different, but similar functions in the arrange page.
I admit, "astounding" was just me venting. But the hypothetical implementation you describe is exactly what I was hoping to find. As for potential confusion, perhaps they'd need to avoid the word "folder", and call them "track groups", or something like that. But I think it would be an extremely useful organizational tool for those projects where your Tracks start numbering in the several dozens. (Plus it would allow the user to re-position a whole group of Tracks in one move, rather than having to select, drag, and position each Track one at a time.)
Sounds like Feedback Time, once again ('guess it beats doing actual work!).
Thanks very much for the well-considered reply.

  • Audio and Midi Jumping/Swithching Tracks in Arrange Window

I've had an issue with audio and Midi information switching tracks in the arrange window. Granted, I'm new with Logic. But as I'm working in an audio Track (let's say track 3), I happen to undo a record pass or delete something, and the next thing I know, all the tracks have jumped up one -- so the Midi drums in track 10 are in nine, playing the piano insert. The Midi Piano is up in 8 doing nothing (because track 8 is an audio track), etc. etc. etc. Very annoying -- even when the tracks are frozen.
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I've had this happen in the past.
What version of Logic are you working on?

  • When creating new track in stereo... track opens in mono in arrange window

Since upgrading to 8.0.2...weird things are happening to previously saved projects. Stereo tracks are opening up mono and affecting following track. When creating new tracks in stereo.... tracks open mono. I don't know if this is due to 8.0.2 but all these freaky things have happening since. Also, when previewing Apple Loops, I can only hear it on one side, but Loops sounds fine once dragged to arrange window. Is this common or is my computer haunted ? Should I call Ghost Busters ? HELP !!! lol

    Hi there,
I'm having the same problem as well: creating new tracks results in a mono software instrument, not the usual stereo software instrument. BUT... "Universal Track Mode" is already checked in my Audio prefs. I unchecked & rechecked it, but to no avail... I'm still only getting mono software instruments.
Any other ideas? No changes have been made to my system, and I'm running the latest version of Logic Pro.

  • I can't select "audio output stereo" on a track in the arrange window

When I create a new song, in the Arrange window I can
choose "audio output stereo" for a given track, and
access the mixer's output from there. Fab.
When I open a song that I oringally created using Logic 5,
"audio output stereo" does not appear.
Is this something about the file format?
    (a) is there something simple to do to enable that for
older songs, or (b) is there a way to convert older song files to LE7?
    thanks,

    Sorry, je suis un idiot.
FYI. I went into the Environment window and found "Output 1-2"
to be un-checked. Checking it now makes "audio output stero" an available option in that song.
    Thanks for listening.

  • Stereo Fader Missing in LPX Arrange Window

I've imported a project from LP9 and noticed that there is no Stereo output fader in the arrange window in LPX, it was there in LP9..
So I create a "new" audio track and LPX generated Ch 81 (my mixer has 80 channels).  I selected "reassign track" to "Output Stereo -->Output 1-2" but I needed to toggle the automation button to see the automation already on that track (from my LP9 session).
When I go to the environment to delete the redundant Ch 81, the Stereo output fader / track  in the arrange window disappears again.
I repeat the process, and this time I leave Ch 81 intact and save the session.  When I reload the session, the stereo output fader is GONE. The automation still works but I cannot edit or see it...
Why does Logic X not display the output fader assigned in the mixer?

  • Mono files displayed as stereo in arrange window

Hi there everyone. This is my first post and thanks to all the help from all your other posts. here's my question:
I did a recording in ProTools of a Jazz Combo with a Decca Tree and three spot mics. Normally I just load the files from the ProTools "audiofiles" folder into Logic and all is great but on this session Logic is reading the center and right Decca tracks as stereo files. They are not stereo, but mono and Quicktime-Get Info: says they are mono as does clicking on them and selecting "Get Info". Why would they appear as stereo files? They are showing up in the Mixer window as mono channel strips and in the Arrange window and the Audio Window they are listed as stereo. When panning the three Decca tree tracks Left, Center and Right I get a totally mono signal according to the Helper Plugin inserted on the Master Out bus. The file names are also not being copied to the track names properly. Any help would be wonderful as I need to get this mix done ASAP.
    Thanks:)

Once you have dragged the files into the arrange page, look at the channel strip for that track and make sure that the button at the button is toggled to mono. Each track in arrange can handle a stereo or mono file. The LED type thing which shows the level toggles between mono look ... and stereo look.

  • Opening the arrange window ... Track header

Ok so I'm trying to get more efficient with logic and one thing I would like to know is why when I push apple key one and I open the arrange window
Even if I've gone into the arrange window in this song and I've set it up to display all header options , meaning track protect , freeze solo mute etc.... ,
Steven though I've gone through this process and I close that window ... Or even in a new arrange window on top of the correctly set window
Logic gives me an arrange window without these settings make me constantly have to got into view drop down and setting this up again
It's very frustrating and I'd like to know a work around
It's been a long time but when I started using logic six I believe there was a way to set this up by setting up the arrange and then using a key command
    To capture the window
If that's correct I forget how to do it and would like some help
    Thanks

Yea so locking my screen set doesn't work the track header ie the freeze button and protect button still don't appear in a new arrange even after setting lock from the screen set pulldown
    Hi
Yep.... as I said, if you open a new Arrange window each time it will be at the default setup (see below for another method that may fix this for you)
The idea of Screensets is that you "re-open" 'your' Arrange (or other window setup) by recalling the Screenset, NOT opening a new Arrange window.
    Try this:
Get the Arrange the way you'd like it, and then Lock the Screenset. (Note the Screenset number next to the Screenset Menu eg screenset 1). Change the Arrange layout, and then recall the Locked Screenset using the number keys (eg 1). The Arrange will reopen the way you locked it.
    Alternatively, try this:
Open a new project and setup the Arrange Track Headers, open a second Arrange and setup these headers too. Close the second Arrange window. Now make a new (third) Arrange window... it will have the headers the way you set them, as will all new Arrange windows (works here on Logic 9.1.6 and OSX.7.2).

  • Cursor in arrange window won't move when track is playing

    Hi,
Can anyone help with this problem I'm having with Logic? I've been away from making tracks for a few weeks and now that I'm trying to use logic again I'm finding that cursor is not moving when I play a track, both in a new session and in old sessions. I am able to move the cursor by double clicking on the bottom part of the ruler but it doesn't scroll as it should during play. Is this a bug and do I need to reinstall logic or did I inadvertently set something to the wrong setting?
thanks a lot for your help,
    Mike
p.s. I am running logic 7.1 on an IMac G5

The function you probably want is called Catch. Check out:
Logic Pro > Preferences > Global
There's a tab there (called Catch) that allows you to turn Catch off and on - check out the manual for detailed comments on the three options available.
Also, on the Arrange Window there's a button in the top left corner - looks like a person walking. If that's grey, the Catch function is turned off. If blue, the Catch function will operate.

  • Any harm in having over 1000 midi tracks in the arrange window?

The way i like to work is...
to load up like 20 instances of a software sampler, (16 channels on each) and then create tracks for every midi channel in the arrange window. That way, when i'm writing, i can simply switch tracks to play different midi sounds.
Last night I spent hours creating all the tracks, but after I reached 1000, it just says "???" in the track number area. I was still able to create the tracks though, and everything seemed fine.
I should mention that I'm still waiting for the Intel Machfive version, so i can't test it yet.
So my question is, is there a problem for me to have so many tracks in the arrange window?

oh, and one more thing. it said "???" in the arrange window, but it showed the track number in the mixer. This is a good sign, right?

  • Stereo Track Showing as Mono Track in Edit View

    Yup...
Go to View>Waveform Channels and take the check out of 'Layered'...
Incidentally, the clue was that you have both channels displayed at the top of the screen - Layering is the only thing that will superimpose them.

  • Is there a quick way to "fit all" in the arrange window?

Does LP8 have a quick way to fit everything in the arrange window from any magnification level? Something comparable to double-clicking on the magnifying glass in Pro Tools?
For instance, let's say you've made your tracks very tall by control-down-arrowing a bunch of times. Now you want to quickly go back to having every track header showing in the arrange window. At first I thought that the key command "control-option-z" (zoom to fit selection horizontally and vertically) would work if you command-a selected all regions first. That does work horizontally, but if I have a region at the bottom of my track headers, that command does not seem to work vertically. The region at the bottom is still out of view.
One thing I tried was going to the key commands dialogue box and assigning option-2 to "save as zoom 1" and option-3 as "recall zoom 1." But when I start with everything visible in the arrange window, then hit option-2 to save that zoom level, then use the magnifying glass a bunch of times to make everything big, then hit option-3, it does not take me back to the original zoom level that I "saved" as option-2.
If the only way to get back to square one is to start there, then control-option-marquee-select to magnify a few times, then control-option-click on the background the same number of times to get back to where you started, well, OK, I will live with that.
But I am thinking there must be an easy way to "fit everything in window" with just one click, or maybe some kind of key-modified click.
    Any advice much appreciated,
    Jim

OK, thanks for the advice, Erik. I was hoping not to have to use the zoom sliders or the stretch scrollbars method, since it's not as fast as a one-click or double-click method.
One other possibility I was investigating today was saving a screenshot and then recalling it. The manual says:
    Saving and Recalling Screensets
Screensets are numbered from 1 to 99 (using only the 1 to 9 computer keys—the 0 key
is assigned to the Stop command by default).
You don’t need to save screensets with an explicit command. It happens automatically,
as soon as you switch to another screenset. Thus, without any effort, your current
working view is always stored as the current screenset.
    To create a screenset:
    1 Press a numerical key, say 7.
For two-digit screensets, hold down Control while entering the first digit.
2 Arrange your windows as desired, including changes to zoom settings, relationship of
the Arrange area and editor areas, open or closed Inspector and Media or Lists areas,
    and so on.
To recall, or switch between screensets, do one of the following:
m Input the number of the desired screenset (1 to 9).
I thought that had real possibilities. Make the arrange window the size of my whole project to begin with, then save it as, say, screenset 3. Then if I zoom in on a wave form or change the size of everything, just recall screenset 3 to get back. Unfortunately, it apparently constantly keeps track of all your changes, so if you zoom within screenset 3 and then try to recall the screenset 3 that you saved, it just takes you to where you are currently, after all the zooming. I don't understand why Logic thinks that helps you, but that's how it seems to work.
Anyway, I've spent enough time on it. I give up. I guess I will use control-left-arrow, control-right-arrow. Unfortunately, you cannot do them both at the same time, it seems, which would be faster. Oh, well.

  • Creating Apple loops within the arrange window

I have tried this before and had the same result again and again.
I have a stereo recording of a drum kit at 120 bpm which I have chopped to a 2 bar cycle and want to turn it into an apple loop. to fit it into the song I am working on which is at 100 bpm.
I select "add to apple loops library" from the Region drop down menu in the arrange window. the apple loops genre selection window opens which adds it to the apple loops browser. easy!
But when I drop the loop back into the arrange window onto an Audio track within the same song which is 100bpm, it stays at the original tempo and doesn't snap to the bar. but still loops stretches and does what an apple loop should do but at the wrong tempo. what is that all about?

with an extra note to my comment above
if you've dropped the loop from the apple loop browser to the arrange window you then have to open it again in apple loop utility to sort it out by selecting "open in apple utility" from the Audio drop down menu on the arrange window which gives you a chance to edit it properly and now I have a decent loop. but then I have to save it again in the initial menu "add to apple loops" which I have to reclassify it again I thought it'd be a good idea to actually get rid of the first menu choice "add to apple loops" window and just have a window within logic which uses the same engine as apple loops utility and uses the same audio channel (the Last enabled channel in the Environment to Audition the loop because now when Apple loop utility opens the core Audio gets confused and comes out of my comuter speaker and then after a few cycles comes out of the Interface. I think there are too many "menu this", "loop utility that's" going on in logic. I do hope Logic 8 is going to trim away all the excess Lard which Logic has gained since mac took it off Emagic.

  • Mixing Four Tracks To One Stereo Track

    Hi,
In Logic 7.2.3,if I have recorded four backing vocal tracks, all doubled up, and I want them panned across the track, from left to right, is there a way that I can submix them to one stereo track, still keeping their pan positions, so I can apply processing to all of them together.
I tried doing this via a buss to aux track, but it only picked up one side of the stereo spectrum, which is no good.
I remember this was easy to do in Ableton Live, as you could directly output from one track to another track, but I cannot find this option in Logic.
    Thanks,
    Tristan.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   3GB RAM

Send them to a bus. Buses are stereo in Logic and you can apply the same effects to the bus that you can to any track. The output from the bus is normally the main ouput (though you can change it) so it gets back into the mix.
Perhaps the easiest way is to route the I/O of the selected tracks not to Output 1/2 but to Bus 1 and do that for all your backing tracks.
Another way is to click on the Send button on the vocals track and route to Bus 1. Then ramp up the send pot, but check your levels since you are now sending both the original track and the bus to your output. If you don't want the originals to go into the mix, set the tracks to no output or use the first method I mentioned.
You'll probably want Bus 1 in your arrange window. To get it, open the track mixer, click on Global (to display all the objects in your system), scroll to to the extreme right and double click on the label Bus 1.
    Hope that helps!
