Viewing video stored on external drive

I have an external drive with all my video stored on it. How do I set up iMovie to view those videos without storing them on my Mac's internal drive?

First, you need to make sure that the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). FAT 32 will not work.
If they are in a format that iMovie can edit, such as DV, HDV, h.264, Apple Intermediate Codec, Apple Animation, MP4, Motion JPEG, etc., then you can create a folder at the top level of the drive named "iMovie Events". Then drag your folders of video into this folder.
The next time you open iMovie, it will generate thumbnails and cache folders, and you can edit them in iMovie.

  • I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external drive.  I change the kind to "original" but when I view the video from the external drive once exported, the sound and picture are distorted.

I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external hard drive.  I have tried to export from iphoto with changing kind to "original" but when I open the video from the external drive the quality is effected.  I have also tried copying the video to my desktop and then dragging and dropping onto the drive...same problem. Any suggestions?  I would like to save everything to my external drive so that I can delete all of iphoto library and then reimport to correct a few things.

The file sizes are identical.  In the finder I did a search for all .mov files.  Then when they came up, I went through them and named each one so that they would be easier to find.  I am a new mac user and am used to windows.  I realized later that I should not have done this....with a mac files should be named within iphoto app...not finder....When I went to open the videos in iphoto, it wouldn't allow me.  I had to go into finder, copy to desktop and reimport into iphoto.  Then the videos worked again.  However, I had the problem with the poor video quality when copied to external drive before that.  Actually the first problem I had was when I copied to ext drive...videos were copying as an image...so I learned that you have to change "kind" to original before exporting....then that problem was solved...now they are videos, not images but not of a great quality.  Skips, sound and images are not in sync...etc...

  • Itunes won't play music stored on external drive after upgrade to 10.5.3

I updated to 10.5.3 with music files stored on external drive. iTunes shows all music, but will not play. I did have the library file stored locally-I'm not sure if this is why the files all show in Itunes. Music files are about 40gb so I don't have space on my MBpro to store files locally without lag.
When I click a song to play nothing happens. I've read a bunch of other discussions but the only option I've seen is to delete the library and start over. I have a bunch of playlists so I don't want to lose that data and I would rather not have to go to each playlisty and export and import again. Suggestions?
I use match and also store everything in the cloud-but that isn't showing up either

Okay, found the reason in another tread...

  • Open videos stored in iCloud drive

I have some exercises videos stored in my iCloud drive folder. How do I open those on my iPhone??

    Hi Dcneuro,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you have videos stored in iCloud drive and would like to access those on your iPhone. To access those videos, they would need to be synced to your iPhone. You are not able to access this content from iCloud drive on an iOS device. For more information, please review the attached article.
iCloud Drive FAQ - Apple Support
How do I access all my files in iCloud Drive?
You can access your files in iCloud Drive any of these ways:
Using any supported web browser, you can go to iCloud Drive or iWork for iCloud beta at iCloud.com. In iWork for iCloud beta, you can find your Pages, Numbers, and Keynote files.
On your Mac with OS X Yosemite, you can go to iCloud Drive in Finder.
On your PC with Windows 7 or later and iCloud for Windows, you can go to iCloud Drive in File Explorer.
On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 8, you can access your files from Apple apps like Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, or any apps that support iCloud Drive.

  • How do I view photos in an external drive using iphoto

I want to view my photos stored on an external drive using iphoto. How do I do that?

iPhoto is not a photo viewer, it's a photo manager with non-destructive processing. If you want a photo viewer, check put Preview.

  • Viewing itunes library on external drive

Ok this is my problem. I have my itunes application running on my powerbook and the tracks are stored on an external lacie drive.
My girlfriend has a G3 imac with her own itunes and library of tracks on the G3 drive. How can I view my library of tracks on my external drive only without messing up her itunes list , can i swap btween the libraries easily?

Sorry I just realise, what you want is just play your music from your lacie but not import it! You can't, unless you use another application I found this one but it's a shareware, sorrry.

  • Moving all Video to an external Drive

Was trying to get all of my videos ... some in libraries by themselves, some in iMovie, some in iPhoto into a single library ... whether under iPhoto or iMovie so that I could get that big chunk of data off my hard drive and onto an external drive.
I also have movies on another iMac, that I would like to move off of that computer and move all data onto a separate external hard drive so that I can work on movie projects on either computer just my moving the external HD from one computer to another.
    Any help ... appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hi
    iMovie'08
Do not move or alter any folder named iMovie Projects or iMovie Events on DeskTop/Finder !
If You do - iMovie will be confused and in some cases this might end up as un-repairably.
Moving - Can/Should only be done within iMovie and in iMovie'08 only Events can be
moved. Still this is the important one as it contains all raw material and takes up most space.
In iMovie'09 and 11 - Projects also can be moved to an external hard disk.
THE EXTERNAL HARD DISK - HAS TO and should.
    • HAS TO - be Mac OS Extended formatted ! ! - nothing else will work OK with VIDEO
(all mine ext.HDs are journalled - works greatly for me)
    • Should be - a FireWire one as it will work much better than USB/USB2
I which that libraries would be handled same way in iPhoto - BUT They are not - For best
    info ask in iPhoto forum.
    Yours Bengt W

  • How do i input video into an external drive?

Hi. I just bought a 12 inch PB and a 250 GB Lacie external drive. I connected the external drive into my PB and i hooked up my video camera into the computer and started importing video. But how do i know that the video is going into the external drive?

    The Mole,
Before you started importing your video, you were asked to name your project and specify where to save. It's in that Save Dialogue Box that you can navigate to your external drive and save your project there.
If your project is already on your internal drive you can just use the Finder and drag it to you external drive where it will be copied. Just like you would with any other files.
Also, you'll want to make sure the new drive is formatted Mac OS Extended. You can check this using Disk Utility.

  • How to put video files on external drive for Final Cut Pro?

Sorry for the stupid post, but I'm on day one of trying out final cut pro. (Tired of the very limiting imovie) I have a Sony HD video camera and a Go Pro HD camera. I want to store all my video on my 1TB external drive and edit from it. How do I set that up? I'm not up on the lingo that's used in the program, nor can I figure out how to do this so far.
    Thanks in advance.

Hiya mate, first off no such thing as a stupid post. Better to ask if you're not sure!
There are a lot of variables to think about, what codec you want to edit in, i.e. HDV, IMX, ProRes then there's frame rate, 25, 29.97 etc. Best practice is to work native to with the codec you've shot. i.e. if the camera is HDV ingest at HDV. If you want work at a higher codec, ingest or transcode to that codec then work with it in FCP. FCP works best with all assets at the on the same timebase and codec.
You also have to think about disk speed and bandwidth from the external HD to Mac. FCP will only be able to handle 'x' amount of streams and layers depending on the codec.
Anyways...bsck to the question at hand. Im not sure what camera you have shot in but if its HDV you easy set up to set your project to HDV/PAL/NTSC/25/29.97, then set your scratch location to the external drive, and then save your project (make sure you have named it correctly as the scratch location aka capture scratch folder, will be named with the same name as the project). Connect up the camera over firewire then go to log and capture (cmd+8) and ingest.
    Hope this helps!

  • Relink iPhoto videos on an external drive to iMovie projects?

In iMovie 9 on Leopard, how do I relink iPhoto videos to iMovie projects after I've moved the iPhoto library to an external drive?  iPhoto works fine, iMovie not. Thanks

It occurred to me that I could test this. I recently got a new Mac, and I moved my iPhoto Library from the SSD to the hard drive. I usually use Aperture so I have never opened iPhoto on this machine. In fact I moved my whole Home Folder to the Hard Drive.
iMovie was not seeing the iPhoto Events. I opened iPhoto (for the first time). Then I restarted iMovie.
It offered to generate thumbnails for iPhoto. I did not have to restart the Mac.
I know your situation is different. I just thought I would report what I did in case it might help.
I am not seeing any of the yellow triangles, but I am still looking.

  • How to Time Machine backup iPhoto library stored on external drive

    Hi Mac users.
Can you kindly teach me how to backup iphoto library stored on an external drive to my external time machine drive. My internal drive is full so I moved my iPhoto library to a separate drive and deleted the library to create space. Thank you.

Actually there's nothing to do.  TM backs up all connected volumes automatically.  One has to exclude a volume or folder(s) to keep them from being backed up in the TM preferences.
If you find that the EHD is not being backed up exclude it and the "unexclude" it and force a new backup.
