I am new to Macs and I have no idea how to view wmv files. When I receive them, they are grayed out and they don't open when I click on them. Any help will be most appreciated!

This may be an old quesiton, but, I have problems viewing .wmv files online and when friends send .wmv files? I don't understand why? My computer is brand new this past Christmas.... When I select the file to be viewed an error message pops up with the Blue Q on the left side and it reads...."Error opening movie", then it says.... "The movie could not be opened".

Cannot view WMV files on iMAC

I installed Perian 1.2.3 as an add on to my Quicktime player to view WMV files, however after installing Perian I still cannot view them. Am I missing some steps. It comes up on my desk top (Perian 1.2.3) and after I open e-mails with video attatchents such as WMV, I still cannot view them. Please advise, if you can, thanks!

Pretty simple, download and install Flip4Mac. WMV is a MS Windows format so you need a method to convert the WMV files. You can find Flip4Mac at:

Mac OS X has no native ability to view WMV files, but you can download and install the free codecs from Flip4Mac:

and use QuickTime Player. Note that not all WMV codecs have been ported to Mac, nor has the copy protection system, so not all videos will work.

Viewing WMV In Mail

Has Apple increased the security on Mail? I used to be able to view WMV's in Mail before Leopard. Now mail is not allowing them to come through. It says it detected a virus and won't let it through. I can view them in Verizon Yahoo mail but I have to download them all of the time. I do not understand why Verizon Yahoo lets it through showing it was scanned for viruses and all is OK and Mail will not. Is there some way I can change the feature in Mail to view them?

Besides the WMV problem I am having a problem opening up e-mails that have pictures in them as part of a story. This is what I get for the WMV and when there are pictures: it shows an envelope with a letter in it and when I click on it it asks me what application I want it to open up in. I am a novice so I do not know what all of this means. Did not have these problems in Tiger.

Alas, http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/tech-specs.htm says support for Lion coming soon. They are even Microsoft's own recommendation for WMV. Thankfully several virtualization engines are already Lion compatible. See my FAQ*:

Viewing WMV files stored on an SD card - Treo 650

This has probably been covered in another thread, but I am new to the Treo 650 and a "search" function on this forum seems to be eluding me..
Is there a 3rd party app (or better yet installed software!) that I need to view files on an SD card on my machine?

Cola, there are no native programs for viewing wmv files on PalmOS device!
Purchaseable programs are Kinoma 4 EX, or CorePlayer. Both can read wmv video files.
Viewing programs on an SD card is different from running raw video or audio files. Free programs such as Filez, 3xCommander, or File Manager can view the contents of both your device's RAM and it's SD card.

Viewing .WMV Files in Mail

When I get an email with a .wmv file attached, I used to be able to view it directly in Mail. Now, all I get is the audio - no video. I have the latest version of Flip4Mac installed and still not working. Any suggestions?

I got it working properly again. I had previously been prompted to install a new version of Flip4Mac, but when I went to install it, it said I had a newer version and did I really want to install an older version over it. I said no. But I just went in and installed the "new" version even though it said mine was newer and the problem went away. I can see the video in the email now and before this install, I could not.
I'm guessing that maybe the prompt saying my version was newer was not the case? I mean, why would I have a newer version than what's on the website? Maybe they reverted back to an older version on the website because of this problem? I dunno. I just know this fixed it, so I'm happy.

There are quite a few other applications that're also useful for viewing various media types on Mac OS X - including some great free tools from the Unix world - two of the best are VLC (VideoLan Client) and Mplayer OS X
I recommend grabbing those in addition to the (quite correct) suggestions above - they can often open and read things that *nothing else will (and have many other very powerful functions).

Is there a program that allows me to watch wmv files on my Iphone? Its frustrating right now when someone sends me an email with a movie clip and I cannot view it on my Iphone.

The iPhone does not natively support those file types, but there are probably third-party apps that can. Search the iTunes Store for "mpg" or "mpeg" and "WMV".
