Vintage crop in PS or PS elements?

I'm looking for a way to produce a soft oval crop of the kind often seen in original old sepia photographs - commonly in portraits.  Is there a function in PS Elements which will allow me to achieve this effect?  (or any other software package out there which will do this!).
many thanks
Ianfife

Crops are rectangles as is photo paper.  Ovals were created by masking the rectangle negative with a mask or using an oval mat  and frame.  All of which is possible in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. With Photoshop you have more way to do it and its possible to automate it.  A simple Layer Style can make a image look like a sepia print a simple Layer Mask will make a image appear oval. A PSD Collage template can be created to mat, frame and label and image.  Actions are also possible to create an oval framing. An example using actions in my Image Visualization Package:
A Collage template from my Photo Collage Toolkit package:
Photo Collage Toolkit
The package includes four simple rules to follow when making Photo Collage Template PSD files so they will be compatible with my Photoshop scripts.
There are eight scripts in this package they provide the following functions:
TestCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to test a Photo Collage Template while you are making it with Photoshop.
CollageTemplateBuilder.jsx - Can build Templates compatible with this toolkit's scripts.
LayerToAlphaChan.jsx - Used to convert a Prototype Image Layer stack into a template document.
InteractivePopulateCollage.jsx - Used to interactively populate Any Photo Collage template. Offers most user control inserting pictures and text.
ReplaceCollageImage.jsx - use to replace a populated collage image Smart Object layer with an other image correctly resized and positioned.
PopulateCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to Automatically populate a Photo Collage template and leave the populated copy open in Photoshop.
BatchOneImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Collage templates that only have one image inserted. The Collage or Image may be stamped with text.
BatchMultiImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Any Photo Collage template with images in a source image folder. Easier to use than the interactive script. Saved collages can be tweaked.

  • How to crop a video in Premiere Elements 13?

How do I crop a video in Premiere Elements 13?  I see 'pan and zoom.'   And, it retains the aspect ratio automatically, but I don't always need the 'pan' or the 'zoom' -- just want a tight shot on an actresses' sunglasses, which reflect something she is shocked to see.  When I go to help and ask about cropping, it sends me to Photoshop.  Still learning here.

Seems that it is impossible to crop video frame in 13, all guidelines in Adobe pages or any other lead to versions 12 or older, crop is not anymore in same place. Little odd, very simple and needed tool. FreeSpeechZOne have asked this long time ago and no answer??

Is this what you want to do?
Set the Background color chip (bottom of toolbar) to default white.
Use the Elliptical Marquee tool to draw out the oval:
Feather the oval. In this example I feathered 40px but the value you you will depend on your picture's dimensions.
Invert the selection and delete the selection:

  • I am unable to crop my JPEGS suddenly using Elements 11

Hi, I have Photoshop Elements 11, and suddenly I am unble to crop my JPEGS.  (I am using an HP computer with Windows 8, if that matters.)  When I click on "Image," "crop" is light and cannot be clicked on.  I have used Photoshop to crop my JPEGS many times in the past.  I am not sure why it is not working now.  Can anyone tell me how to remedy this problem?  Thanks for your help,  Adrian

What mode are you in quick, giuded or expert?
In the Guided mode, crop is greyed out.

  • Can one crop a movie with Premiere Elements 9

I want to crop a bit from the left and a bit from the right of a movie [not equal amounts].
In Photoshop it is easy, but in Premiere Elements 9 Trim and Crop just appear to zoom in.
I just want to be able to remove without rescaling unattractive parts.
Stupidly being new to video as it is in Photoshop I just assumed [always dangerous] tht would be possible.
Ideally I do not want the result to be rescaled and suffer a loss in quality. Ideally I would like this then to be centered.
I can live with a black border where I removed the offending edges.
There seems to be no way for the user to determine how much lefrt, right , top and bottom.
sorry if I posted this in the pro section but there seems to be no forum for Premeiere Elements. And no support or manuals!
I am happy to buy the upgrade to Premiere Elements 11 if that can do it.
    Any help much appreciated!

    Peter,
    You wrote
My confusion was if I don't select zoom doing a Crop, then what is the difference between that and clip?
One aspect of this to consider as I see it. Given that you have a clip and you apply the Clip effect to it. Using the % choice, you trim rows of pixels. I see no way to escape getting a "color" fill in the areas where the pixels were removed. I see no option in Clip Setup for "no color fill". The color fill is great if you want a colored border around your image. But, if the "Clipped" color filled image is placed on Video 2, the Video 1 image will not show. You could think about applying Chroma Key Effect to get the color fill to transparency.
    Clip Effect
In the above, I placed a copy of the original on Video 1. But, all you can see is the Clip Color Filled image. This would be the case if the Color Fill were black since this black would represent the color black and not the black that Premiere Elements uses to represent transparency.
Now if I took the same photo, applied the Crop Effect, and set the % settings of Crop to the same values as Clip, I would get the same look but with a black border. But this black would represent transparency. This will allow me the alternative of placing some sort of background on Video 1 which would show through the transparency in Video 2 content.
The above is shown without putting anything on Video 1.
The Crop, unlike the Clip, Effect offers the Zoom so that the cropped image fills the screen, leaving no black borders. The following is what the Crop example above looked like after I put a check mark next to Zoom and did a little settings tweeking.
And, finally...this is what Clip Effect looked like when I left the Clip settings as is and scaled away the color fill in the
    Edit Mode Monitor.
The above is from a Premiere Elements 11 NTSC DV Standard project on Windows 7 64 bit.

  • Printing problems in Elements 7

When I crop to a size in Elements 7, the resulting print is coming out much smaller. I am an experienced user, but have only recently started using version 7. Printing on earlier version is o.k.

    Hi,
Please specify the image size and the exact settings and paper size you choose. Also attach the screen shot of  the print preview shown. Kindly expalin in detail what is the difference between the preview and the actual result you got. Also you could try printing from the Organiser and verify if the problems exists there as well.
    Thanks.

  • I use PSE 9 and i just recently encountered a problem trying to crop a photo. I can't find the crop tool. What am I doing wrong?

I have been using PSE for quite a while but I am not a power user. I often use the crop tool to trim unwanted elements and set the size for the paper I want to use. When I opened a photo to edit yesterday the crop tool was not there. There is a tool named recompose but if I click it I cannot make any adjustments. I do not know if other functions are affected and I have no idea how to check them. I have no idea what caused this problem and would appreciate any assistance in resolving the problem.

Which operating system are you using?
The Crop Tool shares the same tool slot in the toolbox with the Recompose Tool.
You should be able to Left click and hold on the toolbox icons to see the fly-out menus for the tools that share the same slots.
Tools in the toolbox that have other tools in the same slot have a little black arrow to the right of the tool icons.
One can also use Shift+C to switch between the Crop and Recompose Tools.

  • CS2 - PSE9

I use PSE 9 and shoot RAW. I am still getting to know my way completely around PSE... I do a fair bit of texture work and layers, layer masks and even adjustment layers are now my friends... In PSE 9 I have no real issues with these but am still learning...I probably don't know what I don't know yet.
My go-to sources are Elements Village, this site and the Missing Manual for PSE 9 (fantastic book!!).
A friend has given me the CD for Photoshop CS2. Yes - 2, not a typo.
My question is - should I bother at all to install it on my computer or just continue along happily with PSE 9? I did read somewhere that
the Adobe RAW is no longer updated for CS2 and it lacks some newer editing features that PSE 9 even has.
I also don't want any computer issues with both programs being installed on the same computer.
I guess I am thinking I will save myself potential headaches as there may be little advantage in the CS2 over PSE9 but I just wanted to ask here to see if there were any reasons I should definitely install the CS2.
    Opinions please!
    Thank you!

CS2 requires activation. It will only be able to be run on two computers. You can install it on more but you can only have it activated on two at a time. You'll have to be hooked up to the Internet so it can call home and confirm you're serial number is good. Not saying this is the case but you can't give away Photoshop if you used it to upgrade to a newer version. I don't believe CS2 will activate if he used it as an upgrade to CS5. See this:
    http://prodesigntools.com/how-to-transfer-adobe-software-licenses-cs5-between-people.html
    That aside....
Things in CS2 not in Elements:
Layer Styles pallet...create your own layer styles
Tool presets...create and save favorite tool presets like crop sizes
Actions...Elements can play some but  With CS2 you can write your own actions and use them.
Custom Shortcuts...Make and use your own custom shortcuts.
    Text on a Path.
Character palette...more text options kerning etc
Text in a Shape can be done
Warp...Transform command includes the ability to warp.
Vanishing Point filter...clone in perspective or add a decal to a box and have it follow a line of perspective by building a grid.
    Liquefy...more features.
Animation palette...you can tween and set timing for gifs
Reduce Noise filter...more options as you can do it per channel
    Lens Blur filter
    Shape Blur filter
    Box Blur filter
    Fiber filter
    Pattern Maker
Extract filter...probably similar to Magic extractor
Adjustment layers...ability to save and load presets
Layer masks...more options than in Elements as the layer styles palette... blending options section... includes some extra masking controls like Blend IF
    Vector Masks
Pen Tool...used to make paths and vector shapes
Paths...one use is to stroke with any brush or tool you want not just the default brush tool with that one tip. You can also simulate pressure as you stroke. Paths can also be turned into selections.
Can make and save custom shapes
    Patch Tool...content aware is similar
    Channels
    Curves
    Channel Mixer
Align and Distribute...align and distrubute by selecting and clicking on an icon so things are spaced evenly.
    Slice Tool...for web work.
CS2 comes with ImageReady...for making web work like buttons, gif animations, and optimization for web to name a few things.
Brush palette...you can add dynamics to brushes like adding textures and combining tips etc.
Soft proofing...view approximation of how your image looks on different systems
Smart Objects...they are more advanced in current versions.
Guides...you can just drag them from rulers where needed instead of having to specify a location.
Trim command...trim away transparent pixels with a command.
    Variables...kind of a batch command
    Crop in perspective
Calculations...useful for things like hair and fur selection. Basically, used to blend channels together and apply blend modes while doing so.
Apply Image...similar to adding a duplicate layer and applying a blend mode and opacity setting. Can be used to apply to an image or a mask.
    Fade Command
    Scripts...they are similar to actions
    Fit Image command.
Match Color ...match color with another layer or image.
    Color Range Command...select by color
Defringe command, Remove Matting (black), Remove Matting (White)
    You also get CS2 Bridge.
    Lab Color Mode
    CMYK Color Mode
    Duo Tones
Picture package may be more robust... I can't confirm that one
Filter Factory is on the disk if you want to play with making custom type filters.
    Quick Mask
I'm sure I probably left out some stuff. I tried to think of stuff that just isn't in Elements. I think that defringe command might be in the PSE 9 but not positive on that so included it in the list. Some of the items on this list are things you might never use but others may be very useful. There will be things, however, you miss out on like the quick select tool. This is not in CS2. A handful of these items can be added by using a free add-on...although they may lack some of the function that will be in CS2.  http://www.cavesofice.org/~grant/Challenge/Tools/Files.html
I will say that I did upgrade to CS3 because CS2 was a little laggy/buggy on my system. I'm not sure if it was specific to my system or not. CS3 is extremely stable on my system.  If you have Vista, you'll need to turn UAC off when you activate or CS2 will ask you to activate everytime you open CS2.

I have been using Elements 8 ever since it came out, and all of a sudden the cropping tool has changed: I can no longer crop horizontally or vertically, only diagonally. The up/down/side arrows have disappeared! Please help if you can, I'm no longer able to make my photos look their best. Thank you in advance.

Quit the editor (Quit PSE on a mac). Then restart it while holding down ctrl+alt+shift (command+option+shift). Keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

  • When opening an image Photoshop Elements 12 is opening it in Camera Raw, it is not a RAW image and it is cropped How do I uncrop the opened image?

When I am opening a .jpg image not an actual raw camera image from Elements 12 it is being opened as a camera Raw image and the image is cropped, I can't find anyway to get the image to uncrop or zoom out so that the entire image is visible so that I can actually edit it to something that is useable. The images were taken with an iPad and copied I suspect using the organizer from Elements 11 but I can't be sure. If I could just uncrop the opened image so that the entire image is visible this would not be a big deal.
Is there a way to uncrop the image that is being opened by Camera Raw? Am I going to have to get my hands on the source of the images (the iPad) and copy the images again using explorer and not let them be copied with the organizer?

Uncheck the boxes at the bottom of the dialog Scale styles and resample Image so that only constrain proportions is checked. If you the change the resolution box from 240 to 300 you will get back to your original dimensions.
This is a meaningless thing to do, you still have the exact same number of pixels, you have only changed the metadata number in the file for ppi, and your prints are not affected by this number.
You could also use the same method to change the dimensions to 6 x 4 or 9 x 6 etc.
There are some cases (actually most cases) where you need to CROP the photo to change the dimensions, when the aspect ratio of the original photos is different than the aspect ratio of the final photo; the specific case in 99jon's example is the only case you ever want to change dimensions using Image->Resize->Image Size, where the aspect ratio doesn't change from 6x4 to 9x6 (or 12x8 or 18x12 or ...), and even then, you could do the same thing simply by telling the printer the size you want, you don't really need to do anything in PSE.

  • New Problem with cropping in Photoshop Elements 8.0

I use adobe photoshop elements 8 for years already and it has worked perfectly up until now. When I crop a picture instead of it cropping when I click on the check mark (as in the past) it reduces it to a small window with just gray in it....no reduced picture at all. Did a setting get thrown off or something? Help is appreciated!

At the far left end of the options bar is a tiny triangle. Click it and choose Reset Tool from the popout menu.

where I keyframed the text elements to make them pop, but
    they are being cropped :(
they play fine in the .fla file
    what should I do?

Here is a screenshot of what I am exactly talking about:

  • My Elements 9 cropping tool just stopped working...crops the entire photo.

My Elements 9 cropping tool just started cropping the entire image away today.  Just got an Adobe air update last night. This is nothing I have done. All that's left after using my crop tool is a .jpg symbol. Please help.

First try resetting the tool. If that doesn't work delete the settings file by holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift as you start PSE and answering the prompt to delete.

  • PhotoShop Elements 9 Crop Tool is a total failure!

I do a fair amount of work that involves a lot of croping, mainly for animation sequencing. The Crop tool Custom Height and Width settings do NOT WORK.
I usually have a test image of the exact size that I work in. Example: 500 x100 pixels. This converts to 13.23cm x 2.65 cm at 96dpi. When I type these Crop Size requirements into the Crop tool settings box, I get a crop size way outside the size of the image that I want to crop. There is no way to set that size up yourself by using a test image as a template. In fact there is no way to set up custom sizes in the menu at all! I find this to be very upsetting as I have only just purchased this product. This limitation is something that I would expext to find in freeware, but not in a program like PhotoShop Elements 9. I have tried every conceivable way to try to get the Crop Tool to work to a Pre Set size with no success.
Why is it that a graphics program will not allow you to put in a pixel x pixel measurement? That is pure stupidity on the part of the programmers and very poor work on the part of the testing team. No wonder the program itself crashes from time to time. It just stops running - ppffft! I have a state of the art 64 bit system running Win 7 with plenty of RAM and a High end Graphics Card, so I know that my system is not at fault - it's PhotoShop 9. I cannot believe the primative workspace and the lack of the ability to custom predefine tools. All in all I'm extremely unhappy with PE9.
If anyone has had this or similar issues and has found a solution please tell me what it is.

In answer to your remark I will go through the whole process again at a later date and re-post. It does not make any difference to the resultant Crop size whether you input cm or pixels. Here's a point for you though since you mentioned it. Check out the Ruler - does it look like the Crop is anywhere near 500cm x 100cm? Maybe you were so busy trying to find fault that you failed to see the forest for the trees?
I only find fault where it exists - not where it doesn't. As far as Forums go, I am a member of a few Forums and have not had this sort of problem with answers before where the reply posts tend toward trying to pretend a problem doesn't exist or trying to prove fault with the poster. Hmmm.  Again I wonder how many of these reply's are from people with some affiliation with Adobe?
I will finish by saying that just for you I will go through the whole pointless exercise again and make sure that the Pixels are indeed input.
    1. Opening File
    2. File Open.
    3. Resetting Crop Tool.
    4. Crop Tool reset and Measurement Boxes clear.
5.First Measurement Input. PLEASE NOTE 500 Pixels Input!
    6. Second Measurement Input. PLEASE NOTE 100 Pixels Input!
    7. Third Criteria Input. PLEASE NOTE 96dpi Input!
    8. All Input Data correct and ready to Crop to preset Width/Height/Dpi restrictions.
    9. OH DEAR IT DOESN'T WORK! Again it fails to give me a simple 500x100 pixel at 96dpi Crop Box!
After this reply post you may just get some idea of the frustration I am experiencing. As you can plainly see the Crop Box drawn goes to the very edges of the Image to be Cropped. Can you see the problem now? Maybe I should just go with my friend's suggestions and take a video of the process and post it on YouTube? Then go to my local Consumer Affairs Department! If you can find what I am supposedly doing wrong - please elucidate as I have followed both the prescribed steps in the somewhat Shoddy Online Help and also the suggested remedies posted on the Forum. All to no avail. It just Won't Work!
