Vintage linocut effect in Illustrator

Hello everybody.
This is my first post so go easy on me! I have been using Illustrator for quite a few years now, but definitely do not claim to be an expert.
I'm trying to create a vintage linocut/woodcut effect in illustrator similar to the image I've attached, but I'm struggling! I have tried to create my own custom pattern and art brushes for different edge effects or shading but I ended up creating loads of them and I still can't create the effect accurately enough. Added to this it's taking a long time and for the pieces I would like to create - it's going to take me months!
I wondered if I was going about this the wrong way and whether anybody here knows of any techniques, tutorials or plugins etc. to create this. E.g. I'm not sure if I need to be using a combination of Photoshop filters and then live paint in Illustrator for example.
Does anybody have any ideas on how to create this? Any help is much appreciated!

This can probably be done in some ways in illustrator but it will probably involve a lot of works like you already find out.
You can probably save some time trying to do this in Photoshop and with the help of Andromedia Cutline filter ( http://www.andromeda.com/main/cutline.php ). Than bring back to Illustrator to add color with live pain or even also finish it in Photoshop. All depend if you want the end results to be vector of not.
Good luck and share your finding!

  • Simple vintage text effect

    Hi,
I was trying to do a simple vintage text effect but I don't know how to name the effect so I can't find any tutorial online.
Here's the effect, it's on the letterpress logo, behind the actual text there is a lined effect carved into the letters.

  • Replicate shadow effect in Illustrator

    Hi All,
I'm trying to replicate a logo for a client that was created by another  designer, and I haven't been able to figure out how to recreate the drop shadow on the type.
    Here's the logo:
When I use the Drop Shadow effect in both Photoshop and Illustrator, the  shadow always pulls away from the type. I've also tried using the 3D  Extrude & Bevel effect in Illustrator, but it always comes out looking much  "rougher" than in the image above. (I'm self-taught, so please forgive  my ignorance.)
Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

Ok, I see what's going on or sorta anyway. The bottom two images are using a shadow that is parallel to the original object. The top is done with a perspective.
Well I did a bit of playing around and I think you just needed to rotate the text a bit more.
Thanks Silkrooster. You've definitely captured the look of the original, albeit with a much narrower drop shadow. Can you provide the steps you took to create this effect (or at least the major steps), and let me know if you think it would work with a wider shadow?

This very common text treatment, dating back to way before computers, is not a pre-built effect in Illustrator. (It's a simple, single, clickdrag affair in Corel Draw.) Don't fake it with a Blend or with 3D Effect. For cleanest results, construct it yourself as proper tidy paths. See this PDF for one method.

Thanks JET. While the techniques in the document you referenced would work, they would take quite a bit of time (for me, anyway) for this logo, so I'm hoping to find a simpler solution.

  • Is there a way to buy a plan with just Premier, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator and Audition?

Is there a way to buy a plan with just Premier, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator and Audition? I saw all the other plans but I'm just a private cartoon animator and don't really need the other software. Plus I don't really do that much money out of this and paying for the complete Create Cloud seems like a waste of money. So basically what I'm looking for is a better monthly price where i can just pay for does 5 adobe software i so despretly need

DAIM  because that's a bit expensive for me. 60euros each month I thought maybe there's a way I can spend less and use this software. I live in a Malta, it's a small country of only four hundred thousand residents and I just use this to animate a few cartoons and I don't really make that much money out of them. I'd end up spending more on the software than I actually make.

  • How do I make a metal effect in illustrator?

Hello I did a logo for a client and it was built in illustrator. I took it to photoshop and put a metal silver effect on it that looked great but I need to do it in illustrator because the client decided they want to use the metal look 100% of the time.
Im not GREAT at illustrator yet... I can get by... so any advice or a link to a great tutorial would be very helpful!
    Thank you so much!!

  • How to create effect in illustrator

I am trying to create this image on illustrator, if someone can tell me how, what i tired to do was create a grid, using the rounded rectangle tool,  making them about 30 px by 30 px with about 5 px space between them,  then use the 3d rotate tool, and get something close, but on the picture  the gap seems to curve a little, and with the gird i get strait lines,  how would i get that slight curve effect, if someone can send me a link that can walk you though would be great.

If you're careful and manipulate the Bloat tool settings properly you can create some bit of that curvature to
the grid, if your grid is created with the level of detail as in your sketch.

  • How can I accomplish this effect in Illustrator?

I'm obsessed with the linocuts like this one:
    http://fc03.deviantart.com/fs37/f/2008/262/e/5/Mark_andrew_webber_1_by_dexter121uk.jpg
Can any make a suggestion on how I'd go about creating this with Illustrator?
I'd imagine I could create two diagonal lines and create a blend, expand, then distort the lines with the warp tool. But how to "freeze" the text-y parts so they warp differently? Any ideas?

This was a linocut so it's not vector, but I see what you're saying...I could create text outlines, "Divide" the paths with them in Pathfinder, and then warp those lines independently.

  • Rippled Satin Effect in Illustrator CS3

Could someone tell me if it is possible to created multiple gradients on one layer as it is in Photoshop. I would like to produce the background from this Photoshop tutorial within Illustrator.
    http://www.tutorial9.net/photoshop/beverage-ad-enhancer/
    http://www.tutorial9.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/reflectedgradient.jpg
If it is possible could you tell me how or direct me to a free tutorial on the web.

You can create a similar design (the grayscale image) with Blends or Gradient Mesh or a collection of linear and radial grad fills or raster blur effects (and combinations of those).
The methodology is very different from Photoshop. (Thus, the falacy of trying to learn a program like Illustrator from tutorials on a program like Photoshop.)
As for "on one layer" you have to define what you mean by that. A "layer" in Photoshop is not the same thing as a "layer" in Illustrator.
Illustrator creates objects. In a sense, each object is on its own "layer" because each object exists in its own position in the object stack (even if the UI indicates that several are on the same "Layer"). The UI can bundle several contiguous items and label them a Layer. Within any Layer, the UI can bundle several contiguous items and label them a Group. Even the subpaths of a Compound Path (ostensibly a single "object") have a sequential order. Even the anchorpoints of a path have a sequential order.

  • 3D Chart effects in Illustrator CS3?

    Hi,
I need to make some great looking charts for an annual report. I'd like them to be on a true 3D riser, like the chart has been rotated and had dimension. I've tried making the chart and using the 3D option filter in Illustrator, but I can't get the effect i want, plus it takes a long time to render. It renders too much...even the number on the graph. Is there a tool that can render charts in Illustrator, or a third party filter that will? Thanks!!!

Personally I stay away from the graphic in Illy (and I stay away from all 3d charts...).
Creating the charts in a more advanced software, and then moving them to Illy gives me more power - but you lose the connection with the data (which you would anyways as soon as you expand it).
Try e.g. Excel or Golden Software's Grapher (my tool of choice), then just select the chart and paste it into Illy. I use bright primary colors for all elements, which makes it easier to separate them to separate layers afterwards.

  • Paint effect with Illustrator file

I have an Illustrator graphic of a plant that I want to animatate to look like it is growing.  The Stroke effect does not give me that desired look as it just animates the outline of the shape and the Paint effect does not seem to work the same in Creative Cloud as it did in prevoius versions of AE.
I have a few questions.  Can you not use the paint tool on Illustrator files?  If I try to double click the layer to open in the layer window, the computer beeps.  I have to right click to open in the layer window.  I also cannot not use the paint tool on the AI file once it is loaded in the layer window.  As a test, I saved the AI files as a PSD and tried to use the paint tool to create my animation and it appears that no longer use that tool to reveal an image.  I can just animate the strokes.
Is there a way to use the Stroke effect the way I want to or is there another way to create my animation.

I did figure out after posting this that I was using one .ai file and one .eps file—the .ai was showing up fine in the pdf and the eps was showing up screwy.
odd thing though, when I just re-exported using pdf/x–1a settings, now both images appear muddy! but fine when I turn "overprint preview" on. I just don't want my publisher to have to tell everybody to turn overprint preview on...they shouldn't have to do that for editors etc, non design people.
maybe the new "smallest file size" will be fine though since this is a press preset...we'll see.

  • InDesign to After Effects/ Photoshop/Illustrator

Hey. I have a project made in InDesign, and I am trying to animate it with after effects, but I am failing to export it all as layers, either because I can not, or do not know how to. Please help me. I just want my InDesign project to be in layers in either illustrator\ oor photoshop preferably after effects. All of the products I am using are CS6, I even tried Creative Cloud too, but it no work

It's not possible. You can use copy&paste to some extent to rebuild your ID file with layers in AI or PS and you may laso be able to export PDFs and images to reassemble them, but that's it. Layers in ID have a completely different meaning than elsewhere and likewise, there is simply no way to translate all ID constructs in such a way that they would appear as layers in other programs.

  • Can't find 3D effect in Illustrator CS6?

Hi guys, I can't seem to find the 3D effect in my Illustrator CS6.  It used to be there, and I have used it before, but now it has vanished! Any suggestions?

Try restarting with all modifier keys pressed to reset preferences. In case you don't want to loose preferences, try to move the prefs folder out of your system first. This enables you to rebuild it incase it doesn't fix the issue.

  • Spray Paint Effect in Illustrator

Recently I accidentally started to make a spray paint effect over one of my layers in illustrator and I was wondering if anyone knew how to do it so I can use it again?

Shift S - switch to symbol sprayer
Choose a symbol (Symbol palette flyout >> open library >> grime vector pack (if you have this one depends on your version)
    Spray some symbols
Switch to other symbol tools to variate the angle/size/color/Tint/etc
