Vintage photo restorations

I recently came into a cache of old family photos. I bought photoshop elements 11, however, I question if it is adequate. Will photoshop elements 11 repair/restore my damaged vintage family photos?(bleached out areas. faded, tears, and holes that would have to almost be recreated.

Yes, you can do a lot of restoration work in PSE. If you google "repair photos Photoshop Elements" you'll get a huge number of tutorials. Also, you can adapt many photoshop tutorials. There's also a whole book devoted specifically to restoration in PSE. It was written for PSE 5, but still has a lot of useful tips:

  • Photos 'restored' mysteriously on my iPad2 (iOS7)

I discovered an unexpected event while wiping out few sensitive photos on iPad.
I have iCloud backup, but Photos is always kept off. I have a backup of these pics (on another OS), so I tried to wipe them out from iPad.
    1. I connected cable and used iTunes -> Syncs photos( to an empty folder).
    2. I cross-checked on iPad after sync that there were no pics left.
    3. To double-check I removed the cable, restarted iPad and SURPRISE !!! When I clicked on Photos "Restoring" appeared and in a minute came up with these pics and in addition pics I had deleted few months back.
At this moment iPad was only connected to internet through Wifi.
Where were these files backed up ? How to ensure that the backup is cleared ?

    Hi Suresh Kr Shukla,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like your pictures are on the iCloud backup. Any time you restore from that backup the pictures will be brought with it. You can, however, delete that backup using the instructions in the attached article.

  • 16 bit depth photo restoration, older version of Photoshop.

I use an older version of Photoshop.  It is able to import and read a 16 bit depth file.  Though it is limited in what it can do with this bit depth, it can do the levels and curves adjustments on an image. I want to have the best quality scan to start with for photo restoration in my older Photoshop. I won't be able to directly import the file with my older Photoshop from the scanner.  If I scan a photo as a 16 bit 600 ppi image, I'm afraid color information will be lost when I open it in the older Photoshop.  Is there any way I can open and save such a file without losing all that good color information? I know I would need to save it in a format that supports 16 bit depth like png versus jpeg.

Not exactly sure how Image Capture works on lion, but i belive i read that since os x 10.5 that it should scan in 16 bits/channel
Are you able to use the software that came with the scanner instead of Image Capture or maybe you need to update your scanner software or
possibly check the preference in the Image Capture scanner preferences to use Twain Software When Possible.
Or scanner software like VueScan which is much better than most software that ships with scanners.
    http://www.hamrick.com/
Anyway if the scan is saved as a 16 bits/channel tif as output by the scanner to a place (folder) on your hard drive, then ps7 should open it as such.

  • HT4859 Can't get all backed up photos restored

I manually backed up my iPhone to iCloud (although my phone was set up to  back up to iCloud automatically too) and then I restored it as a new phone. How come I only have 134 out of more than 1,000 photos restored? How can I get all my photos back?

I'm thinking you might be a little confused here
Backing up your iPhone over-the-air via iCloud and then using iCloud for syncing/Photo Stream is quite different. If you did the backup (Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, then yes your CAMERA ROLL (photos physically on your iPhone) along with all accounts, documents, settings, apps will be backed up, and you can restore these.
If you were only doing Photo Stream however, it simply means that iCloud is syncing all your registered devices so that they show the same photos, contacts etc.
Hope this makes it clearer for you!

I have a digital photo restoration service in need of a website.  Is there a webiste plugin that will allow customer to upload photo to my website for quote?  Go Daddy, and Wordpress/MintThemes said it isn't something they support with their themes.  Other photo restoration website have the upload option.  Please advise.

  • My iPod won't sync videos, photos, restore....

I got a 30gb iPod video (5G) and the latest iTunes installed. I managed to sync all my music into the ipod but when i tried to sync some videos (already on mpg4 format), after like 2 minutes of waiting, i get the following error: "The iPod 'username's iPod' cannot be synced. The disk could not be read from or written to." I tried re-installing iTunes, and restoring iPod to factory's settings but with no success. Instead I get an unknown (1418) error, after some time in the "Restoring 'username's iPod" status bar. What is happening?

I am having the same issue. I have the latest iTunes version and can't Sync my photos. I can't remove the photos on the iPod and can't add new ones. I get the same message about unable to Sync because it can't find the folder yet iTunes lists the selected folder and knows how many photos are in it. I've tried everything short of restoring the ipod. I don't want to have to load all the songs back on there if I can avoid it. Any suggestions?

  • ICloud photos restore not working :(

I restored my 3GS to iOS5.1 and restored from iCloud, but when I go into photos, it's stuck on Downloading 57 of 492
I have restored from iCloud before and it worked fine, why is it stuck this time?! Somebody please help me soon!

if your iCloud restore hung up, just Settings > General > Reset and Erase and Reset all  to start over and perform the download again
there is the chance that your last iCloud backup was interrupted or corrupted during the process it was uploading. If thats the case call tech support.
if you are correctly syncing to your computer and backing up to your computer (always back up on computer and iCloud to be safe) restore from a PC saved backup, or resync the photos from your computer to the phone
remember a computer is listed as a system requirement for an iPhone
    hope that helps!

  • Ipod photo restore problems

i recently bought a second hand ipod and decided to restore it so i could start again. i followed the directions correctly. when the connect to mains icon appeared, i done so accordingly. sadly nothing happened. the icon still appeared even though i had attached it to the mains. i have also tried a car charger and even re-attaching it to my pc on different usb ports with different usb cables.

the system files of your iPod get corrupted, thats why you get the folder exclmation marks.
    see the following helps
    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • Photos restored but no titles

I've had some odd iPhoto behavior. Suddenly, a number of folders are empty. Hundreds of photos--gone. Time Machine to the rescue, and sure enough, if I go back a couple of weeks I can find the missing photos. So I select the folder in question and click "Restore." After a few minutes the photos are back. Just one hitch: they have no titles. The odd thing is that when I view the photos in Time Machine, the titles are, in fact, present.
It would be wonderful if someone could explain how to restore both the photos as well as their titles. This iPhoto library is used to keep track of animals at the local shelter, and without the titles we are lost. After five or six months, Fluffy looks a whole lot like Fuzzy. [Apologies to both Fluffy and Fuzzy.]
Is there an answer to this problem?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Title to File Name menu option.  That will assign the file name to the Title field.

  • IPhoto can't find photos restored after disk failure

Recently imported some old photos that were stored on my NAS.
Last week, the NAS failed and I have now installed new disks and restored a backup.
In iPhoto, my recent photos are there but the ones I imported only have the thumbnail and when I attempt to open them I get the error that it can't find the file.
All I want to know is where does iPhoto "think" these files are so I can make sure the originals are in that location. I can't seem to find the anywhere, the information about where iPhoto is looking for them...

Best to start with a new library and this time use a managed library - if you use a referenced library sooner or later you will have the same problem again
Another alternative is to purchase Aperture and use it to reconnect the referenced photos - Aperture handles referenced library jsut fine and it can share the iPhoto library - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5260?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • Photos restoring problem on iphone 4

when i open photos on my iphone 4, it shows me 0 photos and then start restoring, how can i fix this problem? i face this problem again and again on ios 7.0.4.

for God sake.. please help me.. please!!!

  • Photos restoring problem

i just updated my iphone 4 to iOS 7.0.4. Since then when i click on the photos at the bottom of the photos it says restoring. i dont kow how to fix this problem

I had the same problem, after a long discussion with Apple one of their engineers came up with the bright idea of restoring from the original backup via WiFi rather than connecting to iTunes by USB. This should give you a pretty good idea as to whether the photos are there in your backup file, as for instance it said uploading 22 of 863 photos for me, left it overnight to restore from backup via WiFi, restarted the iPhone in the morning and all of my photos had been restored. I have since backed up all photos to a very helpful Dropbox "Camera Uploads" update.
To restore from iCloud via WiFi, on your device:
Open Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
Wait for the device to restart, input Time and Date Settings and Connect to WiFi.
Log in using your Apple ID and select Restore from iCloud Backup. (Ensure it is the iCloud backup with all relevant photos).
Leave device to Restore overnight and restart in the morning!

  • Photo Restoration

    Hi
I have this really old photo that I want to restore the colors on. The strange yellow square that is taking over most of the photo is what was exposed for decades in the same picture frame.
I know the basics on using color adjustment layers with hue sand saturation, Just wanted to get some tips on how some other would tackle the project?
NOTE: The "reddish" background around the edges appears to be the original color of the photo, is there anyway to "revert" the yellow back to that color using some kind of eyedropping tool adjustment?
Finally removing the red colorcast using the white shirt should get the colors back to normal?
    Original PSD file...   www.grahamfleming.ca/pamcamble.jpg

How much texture do you see when you just look at the image?  If it is minimal, that's what the camera will see, which is why I suggested it.
To get a good photo, try to find a place to lay the print down flat in diffuse yet reasonably bright white light, hold the camera over it and try to fill the frame with it while avoiding reflections, and shoot it with a low ISO so that the camera doesn't add unacceptable noise. The floor of a room with windows in it where a fair bit of light comes in from the outside is a possibility.  Diffuse light coming from all directions will help minimize highlights and shadows on the bits of the texture.
Another possibility is to scan it twice, once 180 degrees rotated from the other scan (i.e., so the light comes from two different directions), then (assuming the scan is quite accurate) combine the images digitally to help cancel out the shadows and highlights from the texture.  If you want to try that, feel free to post the two scans here and I'll be happy to see whether there's hope for that technique.
I used the Crop Tool in Photoshop to remove the border, then Curves and other functions such as Color Balance to get the tones to look more natural.
