Vinyl to MP3

In a misguided event of generosity, Mrs P bought me an Ion turntable, not realising that it is an Applecentric product and underestimating my hatred for all things Appleish. Well, to cut a long story short, after much fiddling I managed to configure the thing so it would record vinyl, transfer it as an mp3 track over to Windows Explorer, from where it can then be sent to my Zen Xfi. The problem is that when it arrives there, any artist or title information is missing, and it just shows up as track 1 etc. Checking Creative Centrale, sadly any tracks recorded in this way are a) contained in an iTunes folder, and b) resist any attempt at editing information.
Apart from binning the Ion and getting something else, any ideas as to how to get round this problem?

Thanks dudes.
I get what you're all saying, and appreciate it.
The reason I was asking mainly is - if I put together
a CD for someone, and put one of my vinyl-->mp3
tracks on it, they're gonna turn the volume way up
for the vinyl track, forget that they did that, and
then hurt their eardrums or **** up their stereo when
the next track blasts on.
know what I'm saying?
anyhow, thanks for your help
Hi uncle alex,
Yes I understand your assumed problem...but remember...you cannot control what other people do,only whay you do...if they mess up their stereo,it is them doing it,NOT your CD.Don't ever feel guilty about it either.
Let me illustrate:
I once spent a whole week remixing an album, because the client kept saying it sounded VERY different at her stereo at home.Boomy and weird. No matter what I did in the studio, the comment stayed the same...
So, One Fine Evening,I decided to follow along and listen to my mixes through her stereo.Lo and behold,as I had suspected, the stereo had these funny "EQ Preset" buttons in the front, and guess what...they were set to "Hip-Hop EQ",loud and boomy!
The album was a Christmas songs album, so you can imagine what the stereo EQ was doing to it.
After I had removed the offending EQ setting, there was the mix I had made!!!
But,we had already wasted a whole week remixing...at least since I was mixing in TrollPools,I went back to my orignal mixes, and finished soon afterwards.
Needless to say,I learned then and there that I cannot expect the consumer or other party to listen on anything even nearly approaching what I listen to in the studio, and therefore,I don't worry about it,but I also mix for the greater common denominator...i.e. I mix listening to at least 5 different speaker systems, including crappy boomboxes, auratones, yamaha ns10s,fancy 10,000 dollar speakers,in short whatever I can get my ears on.This ensures that I did my job as well as I can,and then I can sleep better.

  • Recording vinyl to MP3 with Sound Blas

    Hi All,
I'm a bit of a technophobe so please be kind.
I've just bought a Sound Blaster to record my vinyl into MP3s and I am having a bit of difficulty. The problem being my turntable has two leads coming from it (one red and one white) and there is only one 'Line In'. I've tried with just the red lead from the turntable into the Sound Blaster and just the white lead - it records the song and downloads it into an MP3 but on play back there is no sound. One thought is that I need to somehow get both the red and white lead into the Sound Blaster at the same time - a cable that connects those leads and di'verts them into one lead into the Sound Blaster - will this help with the sound?
    Thanks for your patience,
    John

Depends on soundblaster model and turntable system you have there but normally, you need
    - a phono pre-amp w/ RIAA sage between the turntable and soundcard ... and
    - a 2 x RCA to stereo mini jack adapter/cable to connect the turntable/pre-amp into soundcard
RIAA EQ needed for vinyls can be done by the software as well but, as the recording levels you get are maybe too low (though, this can be fixed by adding gain using software) I suggest, if needed, you either get an external phono pre-amp ($30-$xxxxxx) or connect the turntable using the tape or aux I/O on your stereo system (if there is one). This is done by connecting the PC into your Hi-Fi system as you would connect a cassette deck ... and use exact same settings for recording from turntable using PC as you do when record using cassette deck.
Some instructions over using software based RIAA EQ -

I think you get best results by using the 48kHz version + Voxengo recorder.

  • Converting vinyl to mp3

I would like to convert some of my vinyl to mp3 so I can play it through iTunes, is there an easy way to do this? I have tried using spin doctor but the recording isn't the best quality, it seems to detect other sounds (ie people speaking) and the sound is a bit spacey (best description I could think of). I did try changing my sound settings in system preferences/audio but to no avail.
Does anybody know where I am going wrong or another software or method I can use?
    Thank you.

it seems to detect other sounds (ie people speaking) and the sound is a bit spacey (best description I could think of).
It sounds as if you had the input set to the internal microphone. Spin Doctor - at least the version I have - walks you through a setup procedure. You need to connect the output of your mixer to the input jack (using a 3.5mm stereo plug) and select 'Built-in input' or equivalent in Spin Doctor's set-up. The System Preferences>Sound input setting isn't relevant here.
You can also record using the QuickTime player: you've posted in the Snow Leopard forum but your signature says you are using Leopard. In Leopard you can use the QuickTime payer - File>New Audio recording: you set the input in the Preferences>Recording. In Snow Leopard, the Quicktime X player has a small down-arrow on the right where you can set the input. Both produce a .mov recording which you can convert to MP3 in iTunes. (In iTunes Preferences>General click 'Import Settings' and choose MP3 and your bitrate. Then drag your file into the Library, select it, and choose 'Create MP3 version' from the 'Advanced' menu.)

  • Vinyl to MP3 - how do I get it LOUD?

I just converted a bunch of vinyl to digital last night, edited it a bit in logic, and then exported at the highest volume possible without distortion, and the resultant MP3s are half as loud as anything else in my iTunes.
Here's how I'm converting - Turntable to Mixer (Vestax DJ mixer) to Firebox to Logic
During recording I've got the master volume on the Mixer in the reds, and when I export from Logic the master volume is up and the output volume is almost almost almost distorting, but still the file is too quiet.
Any tips for getting my MP3 files louder??

  • Vinyl to mp3 conversion - using ION profile LP turntable

I recently purchased the ION Profile LP turntable that comes with ION ez Audio Converter for MAC. I plan to convert about 600 old lp's to mp3 to be used on my IPOD. My question...is there anywhere to obtain an updated version of this software in the MAC version...the version that came with the turntable is really lame, you have to babysit it and manually insert a track change or it all runs together in one long track....I know its automatic for PC users...but I need a MAC compatible upgrade...or different software that will work with the MAC.....
    can anyone help?

  • Best program for burning vinyl to MP3s

Hi all.  I've just switched from Windows to iMac. Before this move, I used DAK's software and interface mixer to burn albums from a standard turntable into itunes.. It doesn't work with Macs, so I'm in the hunt. Any advice? The simpler the better. I managed to use DAK, but the less steps, the better.

this software is not supported by apple so with any support or questions you have go to their support forums for help not here. All the links are below and this is a good solution for windows users.

  • How to stop joint stereo during mp3 import when it's not selected.

I use iTunes to manage my mp3 purchased from other music stores (tracsource, etc).  For some reason, iTunes changes my file from stereo to joint stereo even though joint stereo is not selected.  I have searched the web for days prior to this post with no success.  I understand all of the reported benefits of joint stereo but prefer to not have my files altered in any way.  Is there any way to disable completely?  Any information is appreciated.
    Thanks.

This is very helpful and assists with narrowing down my issue.  I am converting vinyl to mp3 using a digital recording device (M-Audio Microtrak II).  From there, I am moving the files to iTunes.  It is possible that this device is encoding as joint stereo but all of the specification read stereo.
I will continue to narrow down the source.
    Thanks again!

  • Mp3 encoding for MediaSourc

    Hi!
I recently bought a SoundBlaster X-fi Xtreme Audio Notebook, and with it came MediaSource 5 (5.0.72). I wanted to record music from my vinyls into mp3, and like others on these boards have noticed too, support for recording into mp3 has been removed, and is available if you buy that $9,99 plugin. I went ahead and bought it, downloaded, run the installer, rebooted, yet the mp3 recording is still unavailable. Sucks to pay $9,99 + VAT (I li've in finland) for something I had expected to be already included in the software and then it doesn't work.
Anyone else had the same problem and maybe a solution?
I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium (32bit)

I feel your Pain. Oh Man.... I bought a Zen V Plus MP3 player for about $70 Cdn and it does not come with software to burn MP3s. This puts a whole new spin on the word "Ripped". Anyone got some advice, other that "Buy an iPod?"?Cdn Beer?

  • Newbie Completely Stuck With The Connections. HE

    Hi
I have received the USB SoundBlaster Li've! 24 bit equipment for my birthday with the sole aim of converting my vinyl to mp3. Already I am stuck with conecting my turntable to the box. From my turntable I have one cable which forks into two leads - one is white and the other is red. The only socket they will fit into is the SPDIF Out but of course I have one socket and 2 heads. I am not very technically minded and all I want to know is how to connect my turntable up so I can start sorting out my vinyl. Can anyone help? Normally my turntable is connected to my stereo system so can I conect via this and how?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Natalie

You need a stereo phono to mini-plug adapter which'll let you connect the input to the line-in on your soundcard. I'm not sure whether that will work though as normally a record player's output need to go to a pre-amplifier before the signals can be processed.

  • Percentage of Type

I'm in the process of converting my dad's vinyls into MP3s for him, and I want to be able to keep track of progress for him. My goal is to create a Numbers document with a table that is a list of all of the albums in one column and the status (ie. Ripped, In Progress, etc.) in the second column. This much I have completed. Next I would like to have a Pie Chart that references the table and puts a percentage as a visual reference point. I can create the chart and tie it to the table, but what functions can I use to count the number of "Ripped", "In Progress", etc. cells that exist? Is this even possible? Am I going about it the wrong way? Thanks!

    I agree with Badunit.
    1. It is not a great idea to convert from vinyl with all its scratches and imperfections. Better to find a digital master, such as CD, and work from that.
    2. Convert to Apple Lossless as the first step, then use iTunes to convert that to whatever format and bitrate your father wants as an end file.
    3. Take it into AIFF so that you can use various audio tools to normalise and clean up the sound.
The pain of having to manually label each track individually from the album sleeve would put me off, that and getting a 2nd rate result.
I converted (well actually am still converting) my vast CD collection and I am anal so check all the data and include composers, musicians and notes and it is a big undertaking.
Try and explain to your Dad that the physical records are just a sentimental attachment, it is the music he is after. How you arrive at the new format is not important.

  • Can I add a 1.8 GHZ Dual Proc to a G4 Quicksilver 733 MHZ Single Proc comp?

I just acquired a G4 Quicksilver 733 MHZ Single Processor/120 MB SDRAM Model Number: M8493
    Can I add a SG4D-1800L 1.8 GHz DUAL Processor to a G4 Quicksilver 733 MHZ Single Processor/120 MB SDRAM?

    Dear TGH
Adding a dual 1.8 GHz processor will significantly reduce task times, obviously those that are processor intensive. I have just added the dual 1.8 GHz processor to my (former) 733 Mz Quicksilver G4. I also added a faster harddrive and more memory, but it was the Processor that really made the difference.
I do some music conversion, vinyl to MP3, and some of the software processes for cleaning up the music were quite time consuming with the 733, anywhere from 3 to 15 minutes per run. These have been reduced to 30s to two or three minutes, so a five-fold speed gain.
Overall, the whole computing experience has benefitted from the upgrades, the multi-tasking and leaping from program to program is crisp and speedy.
Putting in the Sonnet software was a real exercise; I seems for some it is straightforward and for others it is problematic; it is a fragile process. Here are the highlights of my experience....
*OS9* - You need to boot up in OS 9 at least from one disk in your computer. I had an old OS 9 system disc still in the hard drive, but I could not boot up successfully. The OS 9 startup kept freezing. I begged and borrowed OS9 install discs but none of them worked either.
The solution for me was to copy the OS 9 system folder to another hard drive in my computer, that was blank and did not have OS X already one. It was a clean hard drive that I partitioned for a small OS 9 boot disc, and the rest will be a place to keep various projects. From the "clean" disc there was no problem booting up into OS 9.
You need OS 9 for installing the special software that Sonnet provides on a CD. It doesn't matter if the OS 9 disc is separate from your OS X disc and programs, in fact for me it was preferable.
    *Installing the Sonnet software*
You start your system up in OS 9 and run the installation disc from Sonnet. At least that's the theory. First you have to figure out how to make your keyboard work in OS 9. I had to unload drivers off the internet. Then I could open folders and click on buttons as necessary. When I first ran the installation CD it crashed. The old "bomb" box showed up and everything froze. Again and again.
You need to look at each of your PCI cards, and video card, and either move them or update their drivers and firmware. I installed drivers or firmware for both OS 9 and OS X where I could.
Eventually the planets lined up right and the Sonnet CD software downloaded and ran.
The second part of the Sonnet install is restarting your computer and using the programmer button
(the teeny tiny button on the front of my G4) during restart to trigger the firmware revisions. *The Instructions in the book from Sonnet are not right for all Quicksilver G4s.*
The Instructions say to hold the programmer button down while pressing and releasing the power button for startup. Once you hear a "tone" you release the programmer button. For my Quicksilver (which I think is the 2002), you have to hold both buttons down until you hear the tone.
There is no mistaking when you do it right. The tone is heard, a progress bar comes up on the screen, and then after normal startup a dialogue box tells you that the patch to the firmware is in, or it is not. If it isn't then try again. Once I figured out how to do it right, I only had to do it once. Don't be fooled by the Sonnet extension that loads in OS 9 startup, it doesn't mean you necessarily patched the firmware right. You have to hear the tone, see the progress bar and read the message after restart.
Then you can restart in OS X and run that updater available from the Sonnet website (Encore Firmware Updater Installer v.3.1). It is an OS X program, not OS 9. I ran it and it told me all was well that the patch was as it should be. I have read of others who thought it was necessary to runs the program.
    *Installing the Processor*
Installing the processor is a piece of cake, especially after suffering through OS9 startup failures, balking mice, installer crashes and firmware fixes that didn't take. You need a screw driver and your eyeglasses. It takes minutes.
So Good Luck, and enjoy the project. I thought it was worthwhile, though I would sure like to see a different process for jigging up the firmware.

  • Can't drag and drop from iTunes after using Ion USB/ EZ Converter

I am new to transferring old vinyl to mp3, and want to make a CD.
I have the tracks in iTunes now- they play perfectly well, but I cannot drag them onto my desktop (to then transfer to Toast).
Before the tracks were reading as wav, but now they are mp3, however, I did use the "Create mp3 version" feature, so have I confused my Mac, but "re-mp3ing" my tracks?
    Thanks.

Release the mouse when you see the symbol with the line through it; you should then be given the option to authenticate in the dialog which appears. If so, choose this option and provide an administrator password when prompted. If not or if the option doesn't work, move the files to another location inside your home folder.

    Hi,
I've recently been using IMtoo iPod movie converter trial version to convert videos but I want to buy the full version. I was just wondering is I should stick with IM Too or is there better software out there that I should spend my money on instead?
    Thanks!

lol, should have phrased that question better. Audigy 4 as its newer, better and more powerfull than audigy2 zs. also audigy 4 has seperate jacks for headphones line in and out. i rip vinyl to mp3, so need seperate line in/out. that is why i never bought an x-fi card, has stupid 3 way jack going on there.

  • Presario 6320US-No system/CD/video output: input OK.

    Presario 6320US-No system/CD/video output:input OK.
I have an Ion iTTUSB turntable to record vinyl to MP3s. Everything was OK. Copied dozen records
with EZ Vinyl Controller v2.1 w/ Gracenote: this converts the sound & sends it to iTunes. All good with
playback until I recorded ABBA's Greatest Hits! (Yes HA-HA! That was my 1st problem.) There occured
a harmonic distortion event (loud hum developed-feedback loop). I quickly turned down my external Labtec
speakers. The hum was recorded in the iTunes MP3 file and I heard it in playback. Then there was no playback
sound at all: no system sounds, CDs, movies, etc. However, there is still audible input sound when I record
vinyl while recording, but no playback sound afterwards. Fried soundcard? Drivers? (Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA)

You can check if your Mac requires a firmware (Boot ROM version in System Profiler) update. Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 If an update is required, the update must be installed (using OS 9) BEFORE you install OS X.
If you want to leave OS 9 on your hard drive so you can run classic applications, you need to update to OS 9.2.1 or 9.2.2.

  • This is a question for Someone with a UK 80gb video ipod, NOT A CLASSIC

Can someone please tell me if this works
    Open itunes, connect pod
Select all in ipod (not itunes library , while connected)
    Get info
Slide the vol slider all the way to 100
Wait a few moments for the magic to happen
Then is the output louder, like it makes it on my 60gb ipod
Not just full volume half way as some suggest, but LOUDER
plugging into a recording device and watching the meter go up more is proof that my ears are not lying
My 2nd and 5th gen ipods do this but it has no effect on a classic
I would say around 60gb of my music is barely audible (Ripped vinyls so they are not as loud as CDs)
which is why Im after a 80gb 5.5 gen but dont fancy wasting more money after the fiasco called a classic ipod
    Many thanks

    Why aren't they?
I've watched your previous threads on this subject with the same trepidation as Meg St. Clair, deggie, Jeff Bryan and Zevoneer (all of whom have a lot of knowledge and earn my respect for it), but I have hesitated to respond for obvious reasons. Until now.
You mention ripped vinyl being quieter than CDs. Perhaps you should get the level right on the ripped vinyl before importing it into iTunes. Then it would be (almost) the same as CDs.
I use Audacity to rip vinyl to .mp3 for importing to iTunes. Whatever programme you use (if it's any good) should have similar feature to the one I'm about to describe. Once recorded into Audacity and trimmed to length, select all (of the file) and click on Effect/Amplify . A dialogue box comes up which tells you how much amplification will be applied and the new peak amplitude (dB). You should not go above the 0dB mark, nor should you "allow clipping" because you will introduce distortion and/or "clip off" the loudest sounds which will sound dreadful. (I actually amplify to a new peak of -0.3dB, that's my safety margin.)
I mentioned before that the file would now be almost the same as a CD. A CD has a wider dynamic range than vinyl (the difference between the softest and loudest sounds) and many recent CDs also have far more bass than vinyl, which was limited in this respect due to the technology available at the time. Consequently, your ripped vinyl-to-mp3 will probably never be as "punchy" as CD, but at least there will be less difference if the dB level is similar. You could also boost the bass in Audacity - before amplifying - but be very cautious because it's a crude adjustment and if you over-do it, the result will be very tiring when you listen to the song more than once! I speak from experience!
If you use the "boost" feature in iTunes *and it actually does something", it will probably introduce distortion, especially if you simply "blanket boost" all your mp3s by the same amount. It's a very crude method of achieving very little. it should be used selectively and with caution.
By the way, I have a 5th gen late model UK iPod and a 160GB Classic! Whether or not it, or they both have a volume cap - live with it!
