  • When am i Going to Work in RAC

    Hi All,
    I am just curious when i am going to work on RAC/Grid/SAN/cluster ...I feel i am getting outdated with the latest develpoments in technology.......Eventhough i study all these stuffs ..never able to materialise things..
    this is my sad story..:)
    Cheers

    Not a sad story.
    RAC adds an extra level of complexity to database management and above all performance.
    If your app wasn't designed to work in a RAC environment, nasty surprises will probabably await you,
    These surprises are probably common for all so-called 'Database neutral apps' which are actually sqlserver apps.
    You should be glad you managed to escape from RAC.
    I can assure you : RAC + incompetent software vendor = Hell.

  • VIP for Oracle 10g R2 RAC

    Hi All,
    I have a doubt, We are installing 10g R2 2-node RAC on RHEL4 U4. Can we have same IP address for VIP for both the nodes?
    Thanks,
    Praveen.

    Thanks for the response..
    Ok, i'll have unique IP addresses for VIP.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Please post the alertlog ASM from node 1, crsd.log and ocssd.log from node 1
    It might be because node 1 can't see asm disk or permission accidentally changed when the node rebooted

  • Oracle 11gR1 RAC in IBM p servers, VIOS or NOT

    Hi,
    Before IBM VIOS was certified by Oracle RAC last year, I always use two HBA ports and two NIC card ports on each node for redundancy purpose in the RAC implementation in IBM p series servers. I would like to hear other expert's opinion whether VIOS should be considered in the Oracle RAC.
    Here are the pros and cons that I could think of for whether or not using VIOS in RAC:
    Use dedicated HBA and NIC:
    pros: the storage I/O and network throughput are guaranteed and predictable.
    cons: additional cost, the LPAR can not be dynamically moved to another frame if needed (since HBA and NIC are attached to the LPAR)
    Use VIOS:
    pros: I/O Virtualization.
    cons: the LPAR can be dynamically moved to anther frame if needed. RAC node I/O may be impacted by other LPARs that use same device.
    You comments or suggestions are highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Limin.

  • Scan-vip running only on one RAC node

    Hi ,
    While setting up RAC11.2 on Centos 5.7 , I was getting this error during the grid installation:
    PRCR-1079 : Failed to start resource ora.scan1.vip
    CRS-5005: IP Address: 192.168.100.208 is already in use in the network
    CRS-2674: Start of 'ora.scan1.vip' on 'falcen6b' failed

    CRS-5005: IP Address: 192.168.100.209 is already in use in the network
    CRS-2674: Start of 'ora.scan2.vip' on 'falcen6b' failed

    CRS-2632: There are no more servers to try to place resource 'ora.scan3.vip' on that would satisfy its placement policy
    I figured that the scan service is able to run only on one node at a time. When I stopped the service on rac1 and started it on rac2 the service is starting.
    But I think for the grid installation the scan service has to simultaneously run on both the nodes.
    How do I resolve it?
    Any suggestions please.
    PS - I am planning to try with the patch 11.0.2.3 but it will be a while till i get access to it.
    Till then can someone suggest a workaround?

    Hi Balazs Papp and onedbguru,
    I was able to resolve that error by running the following command on rac2, now that part of the installer passed.
    crsctl start res ora.scan1.vip
    However the cluster verification utility is failing at the end of installer.
    When I executed the below command, this is my output:

  • VIP in RAC

    Hi,
    As I know VIP is mainly used to keep your application available though one node goes down in a RAC environment.
    If I am correct can some one pls clear the concept how VIP mechanism works, what happens to the users who are connected to node1. will they get any error while switching to node2.
    Please clear the concept. I am confused with this.
    Regards,
    siva

    Hi Siva,
    As you know VIP (Virtual IP) is an alternate IP address in the same subnet of the public IPs of the cluster servers.
    For instance: if you have 2-node cluster, with public IPs: 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2, you have to configure 2 alternate IPs for the VIP, e.g. 10.0.0.10 and 10.0.0.11
    so node1 has 2 IPs: 10.0.0.1, and 10.0.0.10
    and node2 has 2 IPs: 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.11
    oracle clusterware takes care of configuring those VIPs on the network interface once the VIP resource is up.
    you generally configure the listener to listen on the VIP, and configure the application to connect to the listener on the VIP address.
    when one of the nodes go down, all the connections to the database instance running on that node is of course broken, and all active transaction rolls back.
    Oracle provide some mechanism help in the recovery of connections
    for example see documentation about TAF (Transparent Application Failover), and also on FAN (fast application notification)
    anyway, when one node goes down oracle restarts the VIP resource on the other active node.
    That's in our example below, when node 1 is down, node 2 will have 3 IP addresses:
    10.0.0.2
    10.0.0.11
    10.0.0.10 (VIP of node1)
    but the only purpose of that 3rd IP address is to refuse connections for any client attempting connecting to the first node (10.0.0.10) . Hence the client will attempt the other node VIP (10.0.0.11) and connects successfully.
    without VIP of node 1 running on node 2, any client connecting to IP 10.0.0.10 (where no machine with that IP exists in the network in that case), the client has to wait some time (called the TCP timeout) until it decides to connect to another IP address. That delay appears as hanging when the application tried to connect to the database, and happened to attempts the IP of the down node. But having VIP of the down node running on the active node, will quickly refuse the connection, to make it quickly connect to the other active node.
    hope it's clear
    Best Regards,
    Moustafa Hassan

  • RAC installations

    Good Day.
    We are planning the RAC installations. We are allocate 3TB on HP SAN Storage to be used to setup rac environment with 2 nodes.
    Question.
    1. Do we accept one 3 TB from SAN engineers or ( Which RAID)
    2. Multiple Luns totality to 3 TB.
    3. Remember this is 11g R1 OCR and VOTING DISK cannot be managed by ASM.
    4. We intending to use ASM for Database files. Another question is the VIP address,
    we are given IP Address(Eth02)for public address and EthO3 for private. How do we step for VIP? do we request another sets of IP addresses

    Hi,
    Storage admin can provide 3TB not an issuse.
    And create VIP on top of the public ip only.
    That is For ex: 192.168.0.127 is you are Public IP
    Take 192.168.0.128 as you are VIP.
    follow the below link you can create the VIP
    http://itsecureadmin.blogspot.com/2007/02/creating-virtual-ip-addresses-on-linux.html
    And using SETUP command in linux also you can create a VIP.
    Why you are going for oracle 11gR1??Its Better to install 11gR2.Try for that.
    check the below link for installation,

  • 11g RAC install on virtual box hangs

    Host - windows 7 64bit
    guest - Oracle Enterprise linux 5.2 32bit
    Virtualbox 3.2.6
    Hi all,
    I really need some help. I'm trying to install 11gr1 rac on Oracle Enterprise linux 5.2 32bit with nfs. The crs install goes fine, but when I want to install the database software, it just hangs, sometimes at 2%, sometimes at 45%. I can't open another terminal window or nothing, but the tick still goes black and white.
    I'm using the following doc, and followed it exactly.I gave both nodes 1280 ram, 30 gig disk size, to grow as it's being used.
    Any help will be welcome, I have been sitting with this issue for a month now, and have tried reinstalling from the os level numerus times.

    Hi,
    as far as I remember VirtualBox 3.2.6 does not support shared disks, therefore it's not possibe to set up RAC on it.
    3.2.8 supports shared disks, and there's also information available on how to set RUC up on it: [http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/OracleDB11gR2RACInstallationOnOEL5UsingVirtualBox.php]

  • 10g RAC startup process

    Can sombody tell me how the RAC instance will start. I know like CSS is the first process to start and then what happens how everything comes up.

    The link you have provided is for 11g i think
    i Need 10g RAC startup process.
    ThanksStopping the Oracle RAC 10g Environment
    The first step is to stop the Oracle instance. When the instance (and related services) is down, then bring down the ASM instance. Finally, shut down the node applications (Virtual IP, GSD, TNS Listener, and ONS).
    $ export ORACLE_SID=orcl1
    $ emctl stop dbconsole
    $ srvctl stop instance -d orcl -i orcl1
    $ srvctl stop asm -n linux1
    $ srvctl stop nodeapps -n linux1
    Starting the Oracle RAC 10g Environment
    The first step is to start the node applications (Virtual IP, GSD, TNS Listener, and ONS). When the node applications are successfully started, then bring up the ASM instance. Finally, bring up the Oracle instance (and related services) and the Enterprise Manager Database console.
    $ export ORACLE_SID=orcl1
    $ srvctl start nodeapps -n linux1
    $ srvctl start asm -n linux1
    $ srvctl start instance -d orcl -i orcl1
    $ emctl start dbconsole
    Start/Stop All Instances with SRVCTL
    Start/stop all the instances and their enabled services. I have included this step just for fun as a way to bring down all instances!
    $ srvctl start database -d orcl
    $ srvctl stop database -d orcl

    Just a minor comment on the stop nodeapps.
    While it is fine to stop the nodeapps on the server, the drawback to this is, that the VIP will not failover if you stop the nodeapps, but will be stopped.
    Hence if you only shutdown one server, then you are causing clients to fail to connect to the VIP and having to wait for the TCP/Timeout.
    So if you are not going to shut down all the server, but just want to shutdown one node, you should failover the VIP the the other node.
    See: Note 749160.1 Vip Does Not Failover When Nodeapps Stopped
    So it is sometimes better instead of stopping the nodeapps, to simply shutdown the cluster with crsctl stop crs (which will failover the VIP).

  • Rac node failure crs cleanup failing

    I have a three node rac database, 10.2.0.4 running on Windows server 2008. I lost a hard drive on one of the servers and it corrupted the mirror disk as well so I am having to rebuild. I am going through these procedures, RAC on Windows: How to Cleanup When A Node Has Been Disconnected or The OS Rebuilt (Doc ID 742737.1) and am running into a problem once I tried to delete the listener and then on to crs to delete the nodeapps for node3.
    For the listener, I go into netca and the option to delete a listener is grayed out. When I run crs_stat I can still see the ora.node3.lsnr there. Does this mean that I just need to update tnsnames.ora or is there another place the information would be held? I hate to manually delete because I am afraid I won't get it cleaned out from everywhere. Any idea why that option would not be there?
    My second issue is when I run this:
    srvctl stop nodeapps -n node3 The nodeapps stop doesn't return any output and then when I try to remove nodeapps it gives me PRKO-2112: Some or all node applications are not removed successfully on node.
    I have searched metalink for that error with no success as the document I found also says that you must stop nodeapps. I have already deleted the node from the db and asm and updated the appropriate inventory. I just need to finish the listener and crs and update the inventory for crs. Also, I noticed that the vip for the failed node was reassigned to node2 and I show that it has been released when i run cluvfy to check. Would crs give me errors on this if that was not the case?
    I appreciate any help or guidance!

    Wanted to post a follow up in case any others are interested in the results...
    I had tried to add the listener back to one of the remaining nodes .ora file and then delete but that didn't work. Also, remove nodeapps continued to throw an error that it could not stop the listener or vip for the failed node.
    After a few days of reading I make a decision to just unregister the abandoned services from crs. I made sure to backup the OCRCONFIG before I ran crs_unregister and was able to successfully remove the listener and vip services from the failed node.
    This eliminated my issue with netca, the node did not show up there anymore. I then went on to remove nodeapps and it failed saying it could not find the resource vip. I then ran olsnodes -n and used crssetup to remove the node entirely. Everything showed removed and I went and updated the crs inventory to finish.
    All looks good and now I am working to rebuild and add the node back in.

  • Rac DB 10.2  & Bpel/ OAS 10.1.2.0.0

    bpel installs just fine going to a non-rac dehydration db; bpel/oas v 10.1.2.0.0 to db 10.2; re-ren irca & upgrade scripts on the db; had to insert the vip hostname for the irca script's network adapter; still cannot however, get bpel past the connection string during install - HAS ANYONE GOT THIS TO WORK? IS IT A VERSION PROBLEM OR SOME SPECIAL SETTING? - please help if at all possible

    Hi Rajesh pleace tell me why i am using same version in clusterware and database if i am using 10.2.0.4 2 node rac database and my clusterware version 10.2.0.2 so what type problem in my database .
    Do you mean your database version is 10.2.0.4 and clusterware version is 10.2.0.2 ?
    Ideally clusterware version must be equal/higher than database version.
    Clusterware version 10.2 is certified for database release 10.2 .
