VIPs is inactive in mail.app

After the last update(OSX 10.10.2) VIPs is greyed  out and inactive in mail.app  and can't access the messages filed under it. However vips working on iCloud.com and iOS8.  Any ideas what might be the problem?
Here is the screenshot:

I think the search in mail is busted due to an upgrade issue. I couldn't search the "Entire Message" and get results. To, From and Subject worked. I saw a post here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6765153&#6765153 about re-installing leopard. I did a "Preserve Network and Users install, see here for docs http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270 This finally worked where nothing else did. It's a real P.I.T.A. but it worked. I would be interested to know if all the search problems have been with upgrade installs.

How do you delete a VIP mailbox from the mail app?

    From Mail help:
    Make a sender a VIP
To keep track of messages you receive from especially important people, make them VIPs in Mail. You can have up to 100 VIPs.
To make someone a VIP, move the pointer to the left of the sender’s name in the message header and click the star that appears. You can also move the pointer over the sender’s email address, click the arrow that appears, and choose “Add to VIPs” from the pop-up menu.A mailbox for the VIP is added to the Favorites bar. For example, if you make Dad a VIP sender, his messages are displayed in a VIP mailbox titled Dad.
To remove VIP status from a sender, click the VIP’s star in a message. The star is removed and the sender’s VIP mailbox is removed from the Favorites bar.
If a VIP has several email addresses in Contacts, messages from any of those addresses will appear in the VIP’s mailbox.
If you use iCloud Contacts, your VIPs are available on your other Mac computers that use iCloud Contacts and have OS X Mountain Lion installed.
So to remove a VIP mailbox, you would have to remove all its people, and then exit mail.

  • After upgrading to mountain lion, i find that my mail app does not have a "VIP" Tab. Was wondering if anyone else has this issue and what it is about?

after upgrading to mountain lion, i find that my mail app does not have a "VIP" Tab. Was wondering if anyone else has this issue and what it is about?

First, select sender(s) as VIPs. Then the VIP category will appear.
To select a sender as a VIP, open an email from that sender, then hover over their name and a star icon will appear to the left. Click the star, and that sender will be set as a VIP (and the category will appear in the pane on the left).

  • IMAP option to not delete from server OR recommend alternate mail app?

Using POP in Windows computer and IMAP on iphone.
In the iphone, POP has the opton to "delete from server: never"
There seems no way to accomplish this in the stock mail app when using IMAP ?
Using POP on the iphone is not an option due to the longstanding issue of the Apple mail apps not sending a  proper termination signal back. The mailbox remains locked until the server times it out for inactivity and cleans up the stale lock after 10 minutes. The result is "wrong password" on the computer if it then tries to retrieve during that period. It's a feature of POP by design to use a lock to prevent corruption caused by simultaneous access to the mailbox. BUT, BB,Android,Windows all handle this correctly so that their POP transaction (and the mailbox lock) only lasts seconds! Only ever see this persistent lock with Apple mail clients
The user likes to keep his phone inbox clean, he will delete messages as he deals with them as well as messages he is postponing to deal with on computer later.
Moving messages to a 'later' folder won't help, as that 'later' folder will not be available thru POP (for the computer)
They also don't want to use IMAP on the computer because they don't want their communications stored on the server any longer than necessary.
    Can anyone recommend:
    - Windows IMAP client which downloads all and keeps a local copy of inbox which does not synch with server inbox.
    - Alternate mail app for iphone which allows "delete from device only // never delete from server "

That's not how IMAP works. If you want to keep the inbox clean, but not delete the messages, create folders and move the messages into them for later review.

  • Preview And Mail Apps Keeps Freezing Up in Yosemite

I've posted before regarding the numerous performance issues that I have since upgrading to Yosemite on my MacBook Pro.  I have contacted Apple Support and have even gone to the Genius Bar, but any fixes are always short-lived.
Here's what is happening:  When I launch Preview to open something (e.g., a photo), the app freezes up. I also notice that if I go to the Apple Mail app, there is a keystroke lag when I type.   Also, the battery drains down much faster...
Running the Disk Utility/rebooting will fix the problem for a day or so, until it rears its ugly head again...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Missing IMAP Folder in Yosemite Mail.app?

    Hi, folks —
Stopped using Mail.app a couple years (and a couple iMacs) ago, as I was getting terrible spinning beach balls. With the release of Yosemite, I thought I'd give it a go again. I'm using a new dreamhost-hosted IMAP mail account set up a couple weeks ago.
Initial setup had no errors. I was able to see all built-in folders "under" Inbox (Drafts, Sent, etc), as well as the two I created myself ("Action" and "Archive").
I used the "Use this mailbox for" command to get Drafts, Junk, Trash and Sent to work right.
At this point, I had the following at the top of the Mailboxes column:
    Inbox
       - Action
       - Archive
I could click on all three to view messages in that folder.
    1. I selected "Archive"
    2. I chose "Use This Mailbox For" --> "Archive folder"
    3. BOTH "Action" and "Archive" subfolders disappeared, leaving just "Inbox" (with VIPs just below it )
    At this point:
    • I can find my Inbox and Archive messages by clicking the appropriate mailbox
    • I can also find items in the Action folder by searching — the item appears in the results with the note that it is in the Action folder.
    • I can confirm that the Action folder still exists, by reviewing the webmail interface for this account.
Any idea how to get this folder back visible? I've quit and restarted Mail a few times. Was just starting to trust Mail.app again

I've got my Archive folder visible by clicking Archive icon on one of mine inbox emails. It have appeared in side bar and shows me all of my messages now as suppose to. Maybe same thing will be with VIP, but I don't use this feature so I can't tell you

  • Mail.app downloads IMAP data repeatedly

I user mail.app on three different computers. My main desktop is an iMac. My main travel computer is a MBP. Both of these systems are running SL 10.6.5 (actually 10.6.6 as of today). Mail.app is configured to access my work email via exchange, and my personal email through IMAP. For archiving purposes I use mail-act-on to archive my read email from exchange to IMAP (not sure this matters, but throwing it out there). The problem is that if I happen to leave mail.app running on one computer while using mail.app on the other, they both get confused and re-download all of my archived IMAP email.
I have 23GB of email on my IMAP server. Over time, I've had the local copy of my email on both computers grow to over >160GB. The crazy thing is that, although the mail has been downloaded multiple times, the messages only appear once mail.app. I have to fix this by deleting the IMAP account, recreating is and re-downloading all of my email. As long as I don't forget to shut down mail.app on the inactive computer, I don't have this problem. However, any time I accidentally leave it running on multiple's the problem re-appears. This behavior has been seen by a friend of mine that uses mail.app in a similar fashion.
Has anyone seen this? Any way to fix this?

Looking into the Diagnostics and Usage Reports in 'Settings' -> 'General' -> 'About' I see nine different "ExcResource_MobileMail_DATE" reports. Looking at the report I see a SysInfoCrashReport that indicates that the CPU was pegged at over 50% (mostly over 75%) for over 180 seconds using the MobileMail app.
I also see a "MobileMail_DATE" report that indicates that there was an 'Exception raised during monitored invocation of _loadMoreMessagesWithMaxVisibleIndexPath:maximumIndexPathsBySource:, exception: ** -[__NSArrayM objectAtIndex:]: index 4294967295 beyond bounds for empty array"
And finally I see three "stacks+MobileMail-DATE" reports with "Power assertion timeout for 'com.apple.message.fetchMobileSynchronously...' Simply resetting it now." and "Power assertion timeout for 'com.apple.mobilemail.messagebodyloader' Simply resetting it now" reports.
I updated to iOS 7.0.4 and decided to try and delete the account in my Mail settings and recreate it and set it to manual instead of the non-working fetch. Now, when I try to check my mail it still takes up to five minutes to respond, pulling the screen to refresh brings up the spinner for about one second and then disappears and no indications of activity occur until about three minutes later when I see the spinner in the status bar near the clock and then see a notification that it's downloading X of Y messages. At that point, message headers come in very quick and then about a minute later message previews come in. At random times, opening the mail app I get a "Password incorrect" error, even though the password works on other attempts.

  • Mail app crashes every time - never starts up

I sync'd and updated iphone with podcasts mp3s etc
after that sync, my mail app will not launch. It seems to get the # of e-mail showing on the notification on the mail icon; however, it will not launch once touched.
It seems to try to launch but shows a white screen, delayed about 2-5 seconds then back to the main screen
I have re-booted the phone 3-4 times and doesn't help it
I haven't re-synced the phone b/c that computer that I sync with is at work and not home. so, will try that later when I get to the office.
Other thoughts or has anyone had similar issues?
    TIA!!

Well, I tested a few more things in regards to my problem.
Before the reset which you had suggested above, I had already turned off my e-mail accounts and made them 'inactive' --- except for one ...
I finally turned that one off or made it inactive then turned on another one - and my mail worked on my other account(s) (I have about 7 or so mail accounts setup)
All of my mail accounts are using GMAIL.
Now, I start toggling ALL of my mail accounts back on - all work.
I get to my main account (which was failing before) -- and sure enough, I go to INBOX and it crashes the mail app.
I narrow it down to where I can go to a lot of other folders on my main account, it works. ONLY when going to my INBOX on this one account does it fail... and then, I guess the MAIL app tries to recall where it was b/c it continues to crash until I make that mail account 'inactive'.
So, I think somehow this particular GMAIL inbox is corrupted with my iPhone mail app - I have no idea on this other than maybe deleting my account and re-setting it back up on my iPhone.

  • Attachments not in Mail app iOS 7

We switched to a new server. And imported all mails form the old account. Now in Mail all the attachments are shown. But on the iPad, the icon is shown that there is a attachment, but no attachemt is in the mail. This is only with the imported mails, all new mails are working correctly with the attachments. How to solve this ?

For anyone still tracking this issue, I tried baymu's suggestion of deleting all email accounts and adding them back one at a time.  Unfortunately, it didn't make a difference for me.  Both before and after taking that step, I was finding that the mail app functioned properly about 10% of the time, and the other 90% I was having the same problem as baymu -- when I selected multiple emails (whether to move, delete, flag, or whatever) the radio button adjacent to each of the selected emails would stay filled for only a couple of seconds.  During this time, the options at the bottom of the left column (Mark All, Move, and Delete) were active and showing in blue font.  After a couple of seconds, the radio buttons would no longer show the previosuly selected emails as selected, and the Move and Delete options at the bottom were inactive (i.e., in gray font).can suggest somethi
I haven't been able to identify any common characteristics for the 10% of the time it works properly or the 90% of the time it doesn't, so I'm now stumped.  Unless anyone else can mmake a suggestion, I'm stumped -- will just have to deal with actions on multiple emails on my iPhone, which I have not yet upgraded to iOS 7.
    Suggestions??

  • Folders in Mail.app

For the life of me I can't figure out how to make folders work the way I want in Mail.app.
The hierachy of folders is as follows when imported from my Exchange account:
    Inbox
         Exchange Email
              Sub-Folder
              Sub-Folder
              Sub-Folder
These are when I do the initial import from my Exchange account.  The issue is when I want to add a new folder, mail.app puts the folder all the way down on the left side, with no way of moving the folder back up under the hiearchy like the other folders.
    For instance
    Inbox
         Exchange Email
              Sub-Folder
              Sub-Folder
              Sub-Folder
    VIPS
    Flagged
    Drafts
    Sent
    Exchange Email
         Deleted Items
         Newsfeed
         RSS Feeds
New Created Sub-Folder <------------      Do Not Want It There!!!!!
Any ideas?  Did this make any sense?

I know. Everyone keeps saying that and says they can't believe I'm still using POP.
However: Does that not mean that all my mails would sit on the server, even the very old ones I've read? Usually I keep at least 5 years worth of emails (and even after that I archive them), resulting in a very large mail DB. Would my email provider not have a limit on storage of files? And once I delete some mails on the server, would they then not also disappear from my local client?
PLUS: Can I still read my old mails locally when I'm somewhere w/o internet access?
iMap seems a bit like having my post office keep all my personal mail and only send me copies of them. Seems a strange way to go to me. (for business it actually seems a bit dangerous--what about audit trails, etc. and the fact that it would be so easy to get access to all thge old mails on the server?)

  • Mail in continuous "Synchronizing with Server" (all mail, not just Mail.app)

Since upgrading to 10.9 Mavericks, Mail (Apple) continually syncrhonizes with the servers. I have a plethora of folders stored via iCloud (IMAP). When it gets to the end, there's a short lull but, if I do anything else, the process starts again. (Viewable via Mail's Activity Window (Cmd-Opt-Zero).)
It always synchronizes of course, but it used to be in the blink of an eye, and (seemingly) not each and every folder.
I thought it was a Mail only issue, but I downloaded Airmail from the Mac App Store to give it a whirl, and the problem is the same: it synchronizes with the server continuously. As with Mail, when it gets through with the last folder, there's a pause, and it starts up again.
When it was assumed to just be a Mail.app issue, it was one thing, but now it appears its a universal mail issue. I've done some research, and I know Gmail users are feeling the pain, but I don't have Gmail -- my only account is my mac/me/icloud one.
Some have suggested it's a bug with Mail, but wouldn't my issue with Airmail rule that out? Others have posted that the issue is with Spotlight and how it indexes mail messages for search. (FWIW, I've unchecked "Mail & Messages" in Spotlight but it doesn't seem to have helped the issue.)

I don't know if this is the exact same problem.  I sync my Gmail and my iCloud mail accounts on the Mail program.  Since upgrading to Mavericks, whenever my Mail program is being used, it is constantly notifying me about VIP mail in my mail box -- over and over again, the same mail items. It's annoying, and I assume this pointless activity is also affecting performance at the margins.  How do I shut this off but still get notified when I get NEW mail from VIPs?

  • Mail app missing "Archive" folder in sidebar for iCloud account.

This seems like it should be an easy fix but, it's not. I've been trying all day. Basically, the sidebar in the mail app now only provides Inbox, Sent, (VIP if set up) Junk and Trash. It used to also have three other folders. (Drafts, Archive and Flagged) Now, I am able to view Inbox, VIP's, Sent, Drafts and Flagged by the drop-down menu right above "MAILBOXES". But neither on the drop-down menu or the sidebar is the "Archive" folder located. If I want to archive a message I certainly can by clicking the "Archive" button in the top toolbar. But, the whole folder used to be in the sidebar where I can view "saved" messages just like I would on my iPhone.
I have found a way to put it back temporarily but if I quit the mail app, the folder goes missing again. These are the steps I have done to put it back in the sidebar.
Original image when app is opened: No "Archive" folder.
I click the gear on bottom left of app. And then I clicked "Get Account Info".
This new window opens up and give me options. And so I clicked "Archive" and then "Show Messages".
After doing that I noticed that the "Archive" folder is now back where I have always seen it. And, I can view all messages I've saved there whether it be from the mail app, my iPhone or iCloud on the web.
If I quit the application I have to start all over again to retrieve the folder. Although it's not a long process it can be annoying and for some reason it opens two full windows of the app.
I am only asking about this for iCloud e-mail not Gmail or Yahoo! etc.
Why is the folder not there anymore? How can it be placed permanently again?
I can import it but anytime I move a message to the imported "Archive" folder it's only saving desktops messages and not all that possess iCloud.
The simple question is how to keep that "Archive" folder in the sidebar, as it is pictured in the last picture, the way it used to be, all the time.
    -Randy

I had the same problem today with (Mavericks) Mail and was able to fix this easily:
In the search bar, look up some email which is in the archive. In the upper right corner of this email you find two links: "details" and "archive ..". klick on that "archive". it will place the archive folder back in the sidebar permanently.

  • Mail app badges

Hey,  I have noticed a weird bug on my iphone 4s iOS 7 lately. Badge count reappears on the Mail icon even though I'm turning that notifications off in Settings. I never had such a problem. I wonder whats wrong.. I tried to restart the iPhone but still no progress.
Do you know what's going on? Thank you!

Did you turn them off for VIP settings as well? Remember VIP overrides any setting you set for the main mail app. Go to the notification center settings, select mail, then select VIP, and go from there. :)

  • Mobile Me Mail in Mail.app no longer downloading correctly

Since the latest update from Apple to 10.5.6 I've been having a problem with Mail.app. I leave Mail open throughout the day while I work. The only email account it uses is my mobile me - which is also set up on my iPod Touch. Since the update, and without fail - messages are pushed to my iPod (I hear the new message sound as it is docked) but are not downloaded to Mail.app. I can also log in to the me.com website and see the new message when it arrives.
If I go in to Mail I can click 'get mail' but nothing downloads. I hear the 'no new messages' sound. In order to get my new mail message I have to exit Mail and reopen it - then it downloads.
This has made Mail.app totally useless. I have to keep it closed, wait for my iPod to notify me of new mail, then open Mail to read it. This is silly - anyone else experiencing this issue?

Thanks for the tip, but that's a no go. By default, Mobile Me accounts have this activated. I have tried it both active and inactive and it has had no effect either way.
Since it happens on all my Mac's I know it can't be a single system issue. And until someone else posted here that they had the same problem I thought perhaps it could be an issue with my actual Mobile Me account. Aside from this one posting, I have yet to encounter a single other person whom experiences this. Everyone just looks at me cross-eyed including Apple support.
It's deffinately an issue with Mail app though - works fine on my iPod Touch, iPhone and via my mail widget (that I just starting using since I cannot leave mail open).

  • Mail app crashing when making changes to accounts

I've recently upgraded my OS from 10.5 to 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
I use Mail app and have two accounts; 'work' and 'personal'. If I go the Mail Preferences and make the 'personal' account inactive Mail crashes and I get a warning message saying; 'Mail quit unexpectedly'. If I go to Mail Preferences and make the 'work' account inactive I can not close the Mail Preferences window.
I also installed Rosetta. I understand this only works when needed with legacy Power PC applications, so I presume this isn't causing the problem.
    Thanks for any help
    Mark

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I've only just had some time to look at this. I've reinstalled 10.6.3 from my CD and got the same problem. I've upgraded to 10.6.8. Same problem. I've created a 'test' user and logged into that and created my two email accounts. Same problem. I've closed all other open applications and same problem.
Mail works fine, but when I come to un-enable an account Mail either crashes or the Mail Preferences window won't shut down (the account is un-enabled but I can't close the stupid Preferences window).
I've got an Apple Tech support person phoning me at 12. I'll let you know how I get on.
    Thanks
