Virgin Super Hub and BT HomeHub as a wireless repe...

Hello there!
I've just change my internet provider to Virgin and got a new, shiny Super Hub (some Netgear inside). The hub is upstairs, however I also need at least one RJ-45 port downstairs. I've got a BT HomeHub 1.0 as well as HomeHub 2.0 (BT leftovers).
Any chance to connect Virgin hub to any of the BT hubs wirelessly so I can have RJ-45 ports available downstairs?
Thanks
Kris

I have a Virgin Media Super hub and would like to know what firewall settings to put it on, low, medium or high or whether it makes any difference? I am trying to make my network and Mac as secure as possible and need help, i've always had PCs.

The Mac operating system has very good firewall built-in to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> File Sharing.
That said, if your hub has 802.11g or higher WiFi, be sure to use WPA2 security, and see if there are settings to prevent ping attacks.
If your hub is only ethernet, find out what settings to ues to prevent ping attacks.
802.11b WiFi is fairly insecure, and you are better to use ethernet instead, if that's all it provides.

  • Connecting to Virgin Super Hub

I have just changed my broadband provider to Virgin and the new Super Hub 2ac.
I cannot connect my time capsule as evert time I do the Super Hub blocks and I have to re-start it again. Virgin tell me they don't know why. I think it is because of the settings on the Super hub. Does anyone know how to do this so it won't block?

Bridge the TC.. plug it in by ethernet.. there are several posts about virgin super hub if you use the search.
They appear pretty regularly in these discussions.

  • Will Time capsule work easily with a Virgin Super Hub ??

I'm a bit of a moron when it comes to anything to do with Computers. Have had my I Mac since February and Love it , so easy to use. Im looking at Back up Storage now and whilst visiting an Apple store they recommeneded the Time Capsule as not only will it give me the storage but it also strengthen the Wireless cover in my home. I use Virgin Broadband and have a Virgin Super Hub. I have read it is easy to connect, but bringing you back to my opening line I am really bad at understanding what will need to be done. Any help in talking to a simpletone in easy to understand language will be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure what the virgin super hub is.. but assuming it is a router with ethernet ports.. and you have one spare ethernet.. then yes, a TC is a great device for you..
I am not sure if you are asking for buying info or setup info because you have bought one.. but the setup is simple if you load the 5.6 airport utility.. I cannot tell you how to do it from the internal version 6 in Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Download and install.. this is simply a more tool version of the utility.. whereas the Lion one is more a toy version.
Go to the manual setup, then internet tab.. down the bottom you will see connection sharing.. the option to choose is off, bridge mode.. update the TC..
Then you can plug it into the virgin router and it will simply work in the network as a network drive.
Wireless can be tricky but for now leave on auto.
If you actually have issues.. think of the network as the washing machine.. get the technician in to fix it.. just like you do the washing machine.. I find it hard to understand why people expect to be able to do everything themselves.

  • Will airport extreme provide better service than the virgin super hub alone

I'm about to switch from BT to virgin with a 152mb connection. Will adding an airpot extreme give me better service. Also as I'm not technical I'm assuming the extreme can handle those speeds.
    Thanks in advance

    Two things to consider:
The AirPort Extreme, unlike the BT or Virgin super hub, does NOT have a built in Internet modem. You would still need to use either of those hubs with the Extreme.
Regardless of which router/gateway device you use, they will NOT improve the download/upload bandwidth of your Internet connection.
Based on the information that you provided, unless you specifically need to extend the wireless range of the new Virgin gateway, you don't actually need to use an AirPort Extreme.

  • Virgin media super hub and apple time capsule

Hi - I'm just about to take delivery of a virgin media super hub ( as Virgin are currently increasing our Speed) - but currently have a Time Capsule, how would this work with the new Hub? I still want to use the TC but as the new hub is both Router and Modem? Can anyone give me some "laymens" guidance please?
    Many thanks

I am still following the thread! I am very interested to read your findings, since I am running an old-style non-wifi 20mb ntlworld cable modem and a newly acquired TC and I have been wondering if the TC was up to the job of distributing the data flow on a 100 mbps line (which I thinking of upgrading to).
In theory the TC is well up to the speed required.. wan to lan throughput of the latest gen or previous one should be same as the 5th generation AEBS which is tested around 430mbps..
    See http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews/31564-apple-airport-ext reme-gen-5-reviewed
They use the same processor and basic functions. 1.2ghz processor should be well up to the speed.
In reality lots of people are reporting problems.. there is some issue that needs fixing with firmware or OS upgrade. It doesn't hit everyone, but the TC has enough reports of issues to be wary.
I know that in practice the Virgin service can only serve data as quickly as the websites/game sites you are connected to, but I wonder if the TC will be a 'throttle' on the Virgin network. If so, maybe it's best to operate 2 separate home networks, on different channels: (1) Virgin router and (2) TC. What do you think is the best way to handle this issue?
On my home wifi network, we currently use 2 macbook pros, 1 macbook that can only use 802.11g at best, 3 ipads and 2 PS3s. The PS3s are the most connection speed-sensitive (gaming) but any of the others might be used for streaming video at any time.
You can setup two networks.. just bridge the TC.. and set its wireless to a fixed channel different from the virgin router. There is no problem with doing that, and you are not double NATting doing it. Try to avoid double NAT as that would really give you two networks and the one will be hidden from the other.

  • Wifi speed - virgin super hub

    Hi
This question has probably been mentioned before but I can't the find the answer.
I have recently upgraded my Virgin Media broadband speed to 152mbs and have the VM Super Hub.  I originally had the 50mbs and had no issues when doing a speed check as I received 40-50mbs regularly.  But since the upgrade in speed I'm still only receiving 40-50mbs on my ios devices (iPhone 5s, iPhone 4s and iPad 2) though on my PC I'm receiving a whopping 150-160mbs.  Does anybody else have this issue or has anybody solved this issue before?
    Thanks

Hi, sorry not much help, but I am also on Virgin (20mb so maybe not Superhub) and I have an IPad 1 (plus 2 IPhones) and just installed an IPad 3 with no issues (except synching photo's). I called mine different names in ITunes and I installed it as a new IPad, I did not do a restore from a back up if that helps ?

  • How can i get both iPad 1 and 3 to work on same wifi connection? virgin super hub won't seem to allow it.. please help! :(

is it something to do with IP addresses? or is there a problem with the ipad 3?....

  • Why can't my Photosmart C8180 see my virgin super hub, when it sees other distant routers?

I am running Mac OSX 10.7.2. I have a Virgin superhub. My Photosmart C8180 will not detect the hub using the Wireless wizard, but sees other networks in the area. I have tried setting a fixed IP address within the range the router permits. Still nothing.
The drivers etc have been updated for Lion ffollowing the instructions on the HP site but still no luck. Can anybody help?

  • Virgin super hub 2 router - IP address issues for 3055A printer

Help - please! I have spent hours trying to get my printer to work; Virgin upgraded my router and since then my printer works randomly at best. I have seen other posts on this an tried various fixes but none seem to work. I believe it is to do with not being able to assign a static IP address?
I have two settings 2G and 5G, after speaking to Virgin they set up a range of IP adrresses that should work with my 2G setting; but does not, they said if it did not work I would need to go back to them to 'see what they could do' but tought I would post here first in case there is a fix I am unawre of; not sure if i can go through the pain of speaking to all and sundry at Virgin again!!
    Thanks

    Hello Avonveiw,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would like to offer a way of getting the Deskjet 3055A setup onto your network. This printer will only connect to the 2.4 Ghz portion offered on your router.
Since this printer does not have a traditional Wireless Setup Wizard, we will have to use a wireless computer to connect the printer to the network.
    On the printer;
Restore Network Defaults; Wrench button> Wireless> Restore Defaults.
Ensure Wireless light is blinking blue, if not, go back to Wireless and enable wireless.
On the computer, connect to the network that should look like this: HP-Setup-50-Deskjet 3055A J611.
Open a web browser, type 192.168.223.1 in the address bar, then press enter.
Click Network> Wireless (802.11)> Wireless Setup Wizard.
Once connected to the 2.4 Ghz network, connect the computer back to your network and try printing.
Let me know if this helps.

  • Running Airport Time Capsule with a Virgin Media Super Hub

    Hi,
My Airport Extreme has a weak signal so I am trying to run the Virgin Media Super Hub as a modem. I can do this but then cannot get a signal from the Airport Extreme and am unsure what the best settings are to run this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would recommend you stick to using the superhub in full router mode.. the reason for this is xbox uses upnp which is not supplied by TC. Unless you want to manually port forward every port required then it is best to use TC bridged.
.I also put the tc into bridge mode but still it will not work.
Ok, you need to troubleshoot this some more and telling us.. it doesn't work is unhelpful.
So first of all put the superhub back into full router mode. Turn off and disconnect the TC completely.
Get everything running. Or as much as possible.
What doesn't work? (Other than TM backups of course).
Are you mainly using wireless? Does that work ok on all the computers and xbox?
Please list as much detail as possible of any issues with the TC completely disconnected.
Now plug the TC into a single computer by ethernet.. no other connection to the computer or the TC, so turn off wireless in the computer. Run the airport utility and manual setup. Go to the internet tab, and change connection sharing to off, bridged mode. Go to the wireless page, and turn off wireless.
Update the settings of the TC, then unplug it, and plug it into the superhub with ethernet. (on the computer that you used change back to previous settings).
A reboot of everything is now a worthwhile thing to do.. so turn off everything.. restart modem.. TC.. computers with a 2min gap between them.
On a computer open the airport utility and see if it can find the TC. Setup TM to use the TC.
Explain in as much detail as possible if this fails.

Your download or install of the update may have been corrupt. Visit the Mac App Store and re-download the update or visit http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1726 and download the 10.9.2 update combo and re-install.

  • Airport Express and BT Homehub - how can I get it to work?

    Hello, can someone help??
I have an Airport Express and a MacBook. My only use for my Airport Express is purely to play ITunes music through my stereo via my MacBook wirelessly. Therefore I only require my Airport Express to join my current network.
I recently changed my phone and broadband network provider from Talk Talk back to BT. My Airport Express worked fine when I was with Talk Talk, I was using a Belkin wireless router for my network connection which worked without any problems. When I got my Airport Express, it was easy to set up - it joined my Talk Talk network without a hitch.
When my connection transferred to BT last week, I tried to connect up my Airport Express to my new BT Homehub. However when I went into Airport Utility my AX wasn't there. So, I read the guide on the Apple Support site and reset it to factory settings. This then seemed to make it 'appear' in Airport Utility, so I went through the process of setting it up as I did when I first bought it. When I got through to the final stage when it is 'Updated successfully and is now re-starting', the AX icon seems to disappear from the left hand side of the box and eventually I get an error message stating 'Airport Utility was unable to find your Apple wireless device after reinstating: The settings for this apple device have been successfully updated but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the apple wireless device. You may need to select your network from the airport menu and try again' (Incidentally, this last piece of advice doesn't work)... So, I am not sure what to do. I have tried changing the format of the WEP code I need to enter by adding " in front of the code as well as $ as is the suggestion on the Apple Support site...
Is my AX faulty? Is my BT Homehub (The 'next generation of router' as BT call it) preventing my AX from joining my network?? If anyone can help I would appreciate it, I am not very clued up on these things.... :o)
    Thanks

I have now managed to get AX working on my BT home hub. I took my second non-working unit back to Apple in Solihull and got them to test it in store. They agreed it wasn't working. They then tested another unit in store and that did work so I brought that home. It would be worth you doing the same as I got a 10% discount off my next purchase of anything at Apple for my troubles.
I set my homehub security to None (from WEP - in homehub manager/advanced/wireless/security), plugged in my AX to homehub using an ethernet cable, then ran Airport utility and after a couple of runs it finally picked it up. I was able to set the configurations I wanted and 24 hours later it is still working. I set my homehub security settings back to WEP as soon as the AX was configured.
I also installed airport utility on my son's windows laptop and that is now able to print wirelessly as well. So, finally a result.
I would suggest you take your unit back to where you bought it from and get them to test it. If they offer you another one ask for a Mac genius
to test it in store for you first. Also ask them to run through the installation procedure with you. Don't forget to ask for something for your troubles:)
    Hope that helps,
