Virtual Box and my CD-ROM

Good evening
I am not sure if this is the right place to query this...
I have just installed Virtual Box on my machine, this is like a VM ware for me to run Windows... (sorry but its needed for my University software, a pain I know) although I am very new to Macs I need to know how I can locate/navigate to the CR-ROM drive via Finder.
I understand this may be called ATA as I have seen this in a few places but I would just like some guidance on this one.
Thank you all in advance...

GazzaT,
Like said before you have to have a disc in the computer to really see the disc drive. And in that case you will just see the disc. However if you want to access this disc from Virtual Box you will have to put the disc into your computer and then (Mount) it in Virtual Box. To do so I believe while in Your Virtual Machine Goto (Devices)/(Mount CD/DVD-Rom)/(Host Drive.....(name of host drive)) after which it will appear in My Computer like normal. After you are done using it in Windows you will have to Eject it From windows and then I believe it will remount in Mac. Do note you cant use your CD drive at the same time on Mac and Windows.
Hope this helps.

  • Uninstalling Sun Virtual Box and Windows 7 from Macbook Pro?

    Hi everyone!
Can anyone tell me how to properly UN-install Sun's Virtual Box and Windows 7 Beta from my Macbook Pro so I can reinstall Windows 7 Beta thru Boot Camp?
I recently installed Sun's Virtual Box and Windows 7 Beta on my Macbook Pro. It works fine, but there are some things about Virtual Box I am not happy with. I'm told that uninstalling both Windows 7 and Virtual Box and reinstalling Windows 7 through Boot Camp will be better for what I want and Windows 7 will run much better that way.

    goducks14 wrote:
Thank you - I really appreciate your response. I did delete the .dmg so I guess I will have to re-download it from Sun and then uninstall it as you suggested.
Maybe you can answer another quick question? I am hearing both YES and NO in regards to being able to install the Windows 7 Beta using Boot Camp. Any problems that you might be aware of?
If you visit our BootCamp forum you will find many users running Win7http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1244
While Win7 is not supported, for many users, that's not important.
When I installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit on this MBP, it was not supported and I installed it under Tiger and a beta of BootCamp! It still works. Experimenting is fun and a great learning experience.
Just be sure you have a viable backup - SuperDuper!, CCC or TM before installing BootCamp and Win7 and you always have a path for a recovery should anything go wrong.
    Enjoy!

    Hi ,
I have installed Oracle Virtual box on windows server 2008 r2 hosted on 1und1.de.
Till installtion and setting up untun on virtualbox it was fine, but once i changed the adapater to bridged mode. I immediatly lost connectivity with my server and now cant access.
It is now 2 days i cant access my server and neither ping it, also the website hosted on it is also down.
The 1und1 has following 2 options
    1) using putty i can connect to server command prompt using administrator but cant run any gui application
    2) Server Rescue mode: where i get special environment to start, stop services, access registry and command prompt.
Till now i have tried lot of setting to enable network connectivity but not able to success

    Hi,
According to the result of "ipconfig /all", the physical adapter dosen't appear.
Please check if the physical network adapter works properly. We can verify this in Device Manager.
To open Device Manager by using the Windows interface
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    Click Hardware and Sound.
    Click Device Manager.
If the network adapter is working properly, please make sure that the Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) has been checked in the properties of the physical network adapter.
If issue persists, please try to uninstall the Oracle Virtual box.
    Best Regards.

  • Oracle virtual box and OEL 64 bit installation

    Hi,
    Wonder if anyone can help.
I have a centos5 x86-64bit installation and have downloaded virtualbox and have started to install OEL 64bit.
All appear well until I get a message saying that
    yelp-2.16.0-13.el5.x86_64 cannot be opened.
I can either retry (the result is the same message) or I can reboot which seems to defeat the object of the exercise.
does anyone have any experience on how to resolve this issue?
    regards
    Alan

    Hi Alan,
to be honest, I always took the "DVD iso" to install... not the CD images. I never tried the CD images...
Furthermore yelp-2.0.16-13 is OEL 5.0... which is pretty old, I would suggest you at least taking the CDs of OEL 5.4....
I could imagine that the VM support was not that good in OEL 5.0...
    Regards
    Sebastian

  • [Solved] Virtual Box and wicd issue ?

    Hey guys,
I have been using arch for like about a year now.  I have slowing converting my family members across by install on their machines.  But I have experience a new problem the other day.  My brother has two computers a laptop that I have put arch & kdemod 4 in January.  His also has a desktop with a windows which has just craped itself, so I said time to arch it !.
He needs xp for some programs (that don't like wine) so i have install virtualbox on his laptop no problems.  But after successfully installing arch & kdemod 4 on the desktop I have tried 3 times to install virtualbox.  The Problem I have is after installing the binaries as per wiki wicd stops working completly.
wicd cannot get ip address, when I trying connect via wireless error message is "bad password"
So something is going wrong with the bridging.

Mac Tzu: No, you don't need to bridge networks in rc.conf/conf.d anymore. You just need to chose the setting in VirtualBox.

  • Need help installing Virtual box Windows VM's

I am installing virtual box on wife's mac.   I got the instructions here: http://osxdaily.com/2011/09/04/internet-explorer-for-mac-ie7-ie8-ie-9-free/
I did it previously and it all worked well. Recently the windows session license expired so I reinstalled that portion and it worked for about a week.  Then the Virtual box program just stopped working.   So I uninstalled the virtual box and am attempting to reinstall all components.
First step is install Virtual box from here:  https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads   This went ok andvirtual box runs but there are no VM's.
There is then a script to install the windows VM's.  It is failing.
Script is accessed by copyinf this command into terminal:
    curl -s https://raw.github.com/xdissent/ievms/master/ievms.sh | bash
This is the error I get.   It seems there is a file that already exists but I'm stumped as to what to do.

Here is how I install mine, for numbers I will assume you have a 100GB HDD and 2GB of RAM:
Boot from Win7 DVD and create two partitions, then install Windows7 on one of them. During the install Windows will create a 3rd partition to boot from. You will now have:
    sda1 - 100MB - Windows Boot - boot flag
    sda2 - 50GB - Windows 7 - no flags
    sda3 - 50GB - Unpartitioned Space - no flags
Next boot into Arch and choose to manually partition the drives using cfdisk, using the unfinished space create 3 logical partitions of the sizes 100MB, 2GB, and 50GB. Mark the 100MB one you just created with a boot flag and unmark the 100MB one Windows created.
    Now you should have:
    sda1 - 100MB - Windows Boot - no flags
    sda2 - 50GB - Windows 7 - no flags
    sda3 - 50GB - Unpartitioned Space - no flags
    sda5 - 100MB - Linux Boot - boot flag
    sda6 - 2GB - Linux Swap - no flags
    sda7 - 50GB - Arch - no flags
Click OK/Confirm/Write and then continue to the next step - File Systems and Mountpoints.
Here you need to set the FS for sda5,6,7 and make sure not to touch sda1,2. Choose ext2 for sda5, swap for sda6, and ext3 for sda7. You will also be asked for mountpoints. Pick "/boot" for sda5 and "/" for sda7. Click OK/Confirm/Write and then continue to install Arch like normal, when you get to installing the bootloader make sure to install it on /dev/sda and uncomment the Windows part of the grub/menu.lst file.
Reboot the system and you are done

  • [SOLVED] Guest Arch in Virtual Box Internet Problems

I have installed Arch a few times already in virtual machines on Virtual Box and each time it is unable to configure the internet connection properly.  Having gone through the beginner wiki-pages on starting with Arch, I have tried "ping -c 3 www.google.com" and get "ping: unknown host www.google.com".  However, IP addresses usually work with 0% packet loss.
I then followed the "hwdetect" instruction and that yielded "-bash: hwdetect: command not found".  The command "modprobe pcnet32" does not yield an error and returns nothing.
I have also tried other methods

    Hi,
    Pretty much the same here
That is strange but adding "nameserver 192.168.0.1" to /etc/resolv.conf enables me to access the internet. 192.168.0.1 is of course the IP of the host computer's vitual card but what is strange is: I need to use dhcpcd from guest to be given an IP that isn't even in the same range as 192.168.0.1 (for instance 10.0.2.15)!!
So to basically, host PC has that virtual ethernet card with static IP 192.168.0.1 and internet connection shared (don't know if this is compulsory though) and guest uses dhcp, is given 10.0.2.15 (don't ask me where it gets it from because I disabled it on VirtualBox). Then I just have to add "nameserver 192.168.0.1" to resolv.conf and I'm good... till dhcpcd rewrites the resolv.conf. How could we set dhcp to use a particular DNS?
As you can see, I am not a DNS expert. Using static IPs for both would be great but it doesn't work
    Does it help?
The 10.x.x.x.x address range is assigned because you are most probably using NAT networking on the Virtual Box configuration.
    Try with 'Bridged'.
If all goes well you shouldn't need to fiddle with /etc/resolv.conf.
Still, if you still need to change /etc/resolv.conf, put your changes in a file called /etc/resolv.conf.head which will survive
the changes that sometimes DHCP does on /etc/resolv.conf.

  • Network Limited Conectivity & Virtual-Box

Just bought a new Dell Inspiron 3137 laptop, with 64-bit Windows 8.0 installed (not 8.1). I have four legacy 16-bit programs (Bible study, Sermon editor/reference, 2 games) that I need to use as cannot find more recent versions on the market.  So initially
tried to use MS Virtual-PC but it would not install, so then installed Virtual-Box followed by Win-Xp. The W8 OS now (after serious setup efforts) connects ok under Wi-Fi and Ethernet to the internet and to computers on my home network.  But Virtual-Box
and Xp fails! looking at my "Networks" W8 pop-up window I see an entry of "Unidentified Network" and that it has limited connectivity. Xp indicates "connected" but received packet count is 0.
Think this is a result of my attempts & connections under Virtual-Box.  I go to Network and Sharing Center and find first 2 category are enabled but  "All Networks" entry is disabled/off and I cannot find any way to enable! I go to
"Network Connections page and I see 6 entries (Bluetooth, Netgear router, broadband, Virtual-Box, etc). I run the troubleshooter on the Virtual-Box link and am informed that it cannot fix & no useful help provided to me by system!  No progress
w/ comparability mode on legacy programs.
I have initially informed Dell Technical support then most recently Oracle of this problem >>> both say it is not their product malfunctioning and that errors are in configuration of Windows-8 >> but no help.
This is serious irritation as have already wasted about 40 hours chasing/messing with this problem  >>>> NEED HELP AND SUGGESTIONS - PLEASE!
    Thanks .....

Thanks Kevin for the reply, but no progress here.  I am completely new to Windows 8.0 and slightly new to any networking, so keep that in mind should you decide to reply again,  A.K.A., I might need a bit of step-by-step assistance .....
The symptoms here : My new Dell computer finally now connects by wi-fi to home network, has always connected to internet. I am using Virtual-Box v4.12.18 w/ Xp Pro, SP-3. Under Xp in Network I note that it shows "Connected" but received packet
count is 0, sent packet count is hundreds. Looking within W8 at advanced settings, I see 3 network types, 1) Private = enabled, 2) Guest = enabled, 3) All = NOT enabled (and I can find no click, link or setting that
will enable). Have tried with Network Discovery on & off, and with File Sharing on & off, and with 56-bit & 128-bit encryption selected alternatively. So run the Troubleshooter = first pass informed
it could not fix problem : later, troubleshooter stated it fix some problem(s) with incoming connections = at that point I looked and found that under W8 both sent & received packet count was into low thousand but Xp still showed 0 receive.
When I look at Networks under W8 I see "Netgear52" W/ no errors, then see either "Unidentified Network (limited connectivity) OR randomly  see "VirtualBox (Limited Connectivity) and so think Netgear52 is what I should be using.
Again under W8 networking pages, I try "Setup Network - Chose Wireless Router" am asked for SSID (whatever?) but showing nothing after 10-minutes. Have made all efforts both with & without Firewall on Xp & I think on W8 also, no changes
to Security Essentials  Xp is in NAT mode and have not yet tried "Bridged."
    "ipconfig?"
Base system here are : Dell 3137 Inspiron laptop, Win 8.0 + Win-Xp Pro. Motorola Surfboard cable modem. Netgear52 router. Various home networked Eithernet connected computers. Various Tablet & eBook readers connected Wi-Fi. No other component is
reporting any errors and all work Ok.  Xp is Ok except zero connectivity to Internet and home network.  Need to get Xp connected so can access data for legacy programs off home & church networks.
So your help seriously appreciated!    Bill

  • Arch in virtual box gives me i686 instead of x86_64-failed retrieving

    Hello,
I tried arch in virtual box and when I do uname -a it gives me i686 instead of x86_64.
So, trying to insert to repositories the multilib , it doesn't work (it gives me failed retrieving multilib).
    What can I do ?
    Thanks!
(I download the dual ISO file,is that right?)

You chose i686 when booting the install disk in the VM. If you want x86_64, start over and install that. Or just go with i686, you're probably fine.
When I boot ity only had i686 as option.
If your machine supports a 64 bit VM, did you configure it as such?
I don't know anything about that.
So, in hard drive I will not have this problem.
Edit:   BTW, welcome to Arch Linux
    Thanks!

The Host Key should be displayed in the lower right-hand corner of the VirtualBox machine's window. A pop-up message will also appear when you first start up the virtual machine, explaining that you will need the host key to escape out.

  • Windows 8 will not boot - After install virtual box (virtualization)

I installed virtual box and now I am unable to start window 8.
I read online that there is a known issue with virtualization on windows 8. They suggested trying to toggle virtualization on/off in the bios which has not solved my problem. Does anyone know of anything else I can do to get my install back? I really do
not want to have to re-install windows.  I have only had windows 8 installed for three weeks!

I tried upgrading from VirtualBox 4.3.12 to 4.3.20 and ended up with an unbootable machine (Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit). It would come up to the desktop but nothing would work - there were no icons on the desktop, the tray applications didn't seem to be loading,
the transparent task bar was shown as a block of solid colour. Pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL brought up the menu where I could choose Task Manager, but the Task Manager itself would not show up, just a dialog warning me that a process was not responding and asking
if I wanted to end the task (I forget the exact wording). Clicking "End task" that dialog removed the dialog only for it to appear again a minute later. It was not possible to do anything with the machine or to open the Task Manager.
I have updated through a number of versions of VirtualBox without issue. 4.3.20 seems to be a bad update. Unless some other recent update has changed something in Windows so that the VirtualBox update now conflicts.
I forced the system to turn off then used System Restore to reset it to an earlier time. System Restore told me it had failed with an error, but then when I rebooted the machine a dialog came up at the desktop saying that System Restore had succeeded. It
works again now but I am stuck with the older version of VirtualBox.

  • Virtual Box Error

I have been trying to import solaris 11 on VM virtual box and this i have successfully completed. But while trying to open the solaris OS, i got the error message that "VT-x/AMD-V hardware accelerator is not avilable on your system. Your 64-bit guest will fail to detect a 64-bit CPU and will not be able to boot". Can someone please tell me what this error is actually saying and how to overcome it.
    Thanks.

What host os and CPU are you using? The message states that you need virtualization hardware support in the CPU (Intel VT-x or AMD-V) in order to run that 64 bit guets OS. Reasons for this error (that I could think of) could be:
    - you have a very old cpu
    - you have disabled virtualization in your bios
    - you are running a 32-bit host os

  • Sun Virtual Box & Toshiba Satellite L10 - product recovery settings problem

    Hi-
I had a problem a while back with my Satellite L10 and was unable to get full recovery settings after installing Sun Virtual Box and ignoring Microsoft warnings.
I suspect this has now cloned my disk. Something is very very wrong. I am using Win 7 beta in the interim but would like my XP back.
My notes to Sun Microsystems are here:
Has anyone had the same experience or what does Toshiba recommend?
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hi -
Thanks very much for the advice.
It's really strange as the system runs through Win 98 options on booting the product recovery dvd but then gets you to a full & perfect toshiba L10 XP.
I reinstalled XP and went through the process you mentioned above (F8 etc) after installing - at least my safe boot mode options etc. are there.
My guess is that either the disk itself picked up on the cloning or something outside the HDD has been cloned or produced an 'image' of the previous HDD.
If I want to get a new product recovery dvd (as a next step in my investigation) can I download from the net or do I have to order from Toshiba (is this a good course of action?...).
My system can only burn cd's, but I could get someone else to burn a dvd for me if this is possible.
    Thanks....

  • Parallels 7 vs virtual Box?

Before I get into any heavy lifting, I want to know if anyone is running heavy applications on either parallels 7 or virtual Box. I have some apps that will not run on lion and I really don't want to partition my drive if possible. I have pro tools 8 and Reason 3.0 which will not run on Lion. I wanted to know if anyone had any expereince with "heavy duty" software on virtual machines. Has anyone tried using Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro?
Other than the obvious - virtual Box is free. Is it stable?
    Cheers.

Hey Kappy,  I had Parallels a few years back and hated it.  My job sent me to VMWare training and have been using the Mac Fusion for years.  I run Windows 7, Windows XP, Red Hat all on the VMWare.
I use virtual box and Red Hat for my Unix Class. My students just have Windows, so works great for those folks.
I guest my question is, ya (Georgia Speak) think that Parallels is a better product now?
Anyway, Thanks in advance for your thoughts....

    Hi,
if you don't have any idea google is you best friend.
Ask the question you posted here to google, and you will find a lot of good sites with information on this.
However, there is also a good guide, to setup a RAC in Virtualbox, which might answer most of your questions:
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/OracleDB11gR2RACInstallationOnOEL5UsingVirtualBox.php
(Even if you don't intend to install a RAC the steps, till you install the Oracle Software, are the same...).
BTW: Found this via. google ;)
    Regards
    Sebastian
