Virtual box failover setup possible or no

Dear All,
i have three VDI servers and 4th Virtualbox server where 2500 storage is directly connected. it is connected using fibre channel.
i have created zfs pool on this server after mounting LUN on it. and it is working fine now.
but there is currently only one server. i want to use one idle server in VDI setup and make another virtual box server to make failover possible. i will make this new server as virtual box server and connect it to same 2500 storage. ( there is no additional storage)
now how virtualbox failover is possible?
since on current virtualbox server, there is LUN mounted and configured as zfs pool. if i mount the same LUN in second server. and if one server is down, will it take another virtual box server where same LUN is mounted.
or i have to create two LUNs in storage and mount one LUN in one server and another on second virtualbox server and do manual replication?
then there will be manual replication everytime or script to execute for replication.
Kindlly guide.
thank you,
parker

I think you are combining two possible failover scenarios into one by having the VB host and the storage host as the same physical entity. Having the storage host mount a Fibre Channel LUN doesn't really matter because VB uses iscsi to mount the desktop volume so VDI would not be mounting FC luns. If you have two VB hosts and one fails, the remaining host will have the iscsi volumes mounted and the VMs would be restarted on that hosts, assuming the storage host is independent of the VB hosts.
In your scenario if a VB host failed, the storage on that host would as well, so the desktop volumes would be inaccessible. If you needed failover with another VB host you would need another volume mounted and configured as a seconded storage host. Then, if using cloning, the desktop would be spread across the two storage hosts. If you lost a VB host you would only lose half your storage (subsequently half your desktops), if there was enough space, the rest could be recloned.

  • Simple how-to guide to adding windows 7 64-bit to mavericks as a virtual machine (Virtual Box)

Simple how-to guide to adding windows 7 64-bit to mavericks as a virtual machine (Virtual Box)
Why use a Virtual Machine: Sometimes you need to run a windows only program.  A VM lets you do that without rebooting your machine.
How is it different from Mac Boot Camp: Boot camp allows you to run windows but you must reboot your machine. It is faster and smoother than a VM (and with fullscreen details below), but you have to reboot for each use.
Is it possible to have a VM and Boot Camp: Yes, and I do this because sometimes I want to use a VM quickly without shutting down, sometimes I want the advantages of Boot Camp

    Install Win 7 OS:
    Open Virtual Box
Choose “New” (Note: Once you click new it will require you to complete the process of creation, no option for quit.  If you make a mistake or are not ready, just finish it and then remove it and delete all files)
Name: “Windows 7 Virtual” or as you choose
    Type: Microsoft Windows
    Version: Windows 7 64-bit
Memory: I suggest 1GB if you have 4GB available, 512 MB may run slowly.  2GB+ of 4GB may slowdown your MAC OS running while the VM is running.
“Create a Virtual Drive Now” option

Locate your new VM and click Start (again you will not be able to quit once you start, if you make a mistake continue until the red quit icon appears then remove the VM)
It will ask you to select the files for the OS.  Select the ISO file, for example: /Users/Christoper/Downloads/X17-58997.iso.download/X17-58997.iso
Proceed to setup Win with your preferences
Type product key from your OS purchase or an existing one that you are moving from another machine
Note: Screen resolution may be very limited on the virtual machine.  I use resolution 800 X 600 so that all of the desktop is visible.
I suggest using a windows gadget to view the CPU and Memory usage > On desktop mac-right-click i.e. separate fingers and click both > Gadgets > CPU Meter
Enjoy having Windows on your Mac!

I have found a solution to the screen being smaller in the windows 7 virtual machine.  First right-click in the desktop region and select screen resolution.  It is probably set to 800 X 600 by default which is much less than the screensize you are using.  To determine your native screensize, go to your mac and finder > applications > utilities > hardware > graphics displays.  Mine is 1440 X 900 for macbook air.  Then go back into the virtual machine and sceen resolution settings.  Choose a screen resolution which is slightly less in all dimensions so that there is no clipping and you do not have to scroll when viewing.  For me this was 1152 X 864.  Then exit saving changes and with the VM in view press command - F (or at the menu bar View > Switch to full screen), which puts you in full screen mode.  Now you should have a screen with minimal gray empty space filling the majority of your screen

  • VDI 3.0 with Patch2 - Virtual Box 2.0.10 - Host Networking

    Hi Guys,
I have got following setup at a customer site:
    Solaris 10 U7 : Sun VDI 3 Server
    NIC0 - 192.168.100.xx network - sun vdi3.0 All-in-one configuration is installed here
NIC1 - 192.168.34.xx network - windows xp template is bound to this NIC (bridged)
NIC2 - 10.10.11.xx network - windows 7 template is bound to this NIC (bridged)
When I boot those template on VBox manually - I do get correct ip from correct NIC.
I have checked the .xml config files for xp and template which does point to NIC1 & NIC2 respectively.
However, when I upload them to VDI and start cloning..the clones come out on 192.168.100.xx network.
Logically - they should have come out on the same network as their respective templates - which is not happening.
I know this feature is there with VDI 3.1 EA - however, this is a production system so cannot really use it !!
Is it even possible with VDI 3.0 to have different pools on different network? Virtual Box 2.0.10 limitation?
    Regards,
    Hardik

    Hi Hardik,
Wai is correct, VDI 3.0 allows you to specify a single NIC for each VirtualBox host in a Desktop Provider, navigate to:
Desktop Providers -> YourVBoxDesktopProvider -> Host -> Host Details (Click VirtualBox host hyperlink)
This page provides a drop-down with each plumbed NIC on this particular host. By default the first NIC is selected. Navigate to each VirtualBox host in your Desktop Provider and ensure you have selected the correct NIC and click [Save].
Now enable Host Networking in your Pool -> Settings.
All desktops registered/started from this point forward will use the specified NICs. Any Desktops already registered/running on a VirtualBox host will need to be either Shutdown or Powered-Off via the VDI UI and restarted.
Can you confirm that you have followed these steps? I have a similar setup working with various NICs for Host Networking.
If these steps still don't work, what does 'ifconfig -a' executed on your VirtulaBox host show? When you launch the VirtualBox UI and navigate to the networking section of a virtual machines settings, what Host Interfaces are listed there?

  • Vdi 3.1 automatic desktop logon with virtual box desktop provider

    hi
is it possible to enable autologon to a desktop if the desktop provider is virtual box with virtualbox rdp as desktop protocol?
i only see the press ctrl alt delete window
    thank you
    br
    Andre

    Hi
vdi communicates directly with the virtual machine if rdp is usedwith VRDP the RDP client on the vdi/sunray server connects to the Console of the VirtualBox machine
with MS RDP the RDP client on the vdi/sunray server connects to the terminal services of the XP machine.
the virtual desktop which i have imported into vdi was configured with nat This doesn't matter. You are able to configure the network setting at the settings tab of the Pool. (host networking and windows RDP)
if i change the network from nat to hostbased network i'm not able to reach a network from this virtual machineIf you set it to hostbased network do you get proper TCP/IP settings in the XP machine?
must i change the vbox host network config to use hostbased network instead of nat?If you mean change the template; you don't because this could be set with settings on the pool tab.
if you mean change something on the Box hosting the VirtualBox vm's; you don't need to configure anything special to allow it to use hostbased network.
You're VM's running on this box should receive proper TCP/IP settings though.
To debug this create a smartcard to logon to Solaris, with the Sunray management interface :1660 and try to RDP to one of the VM's to see if terminal services are running and firewall settings allow you to connect to the VM from Solaris. You could try this from any other host/laptop/fatclient if you network setup allows you to connect RDP ot the VM's ips.

  • Sun ZFS Virtual Box Appliance - Performance question

Hope this is the right place to ask this question - apologies if it is not.
We are testing out the Sun ZFS storage using the handy Virtual Box Virtual Appliance.
Now I know this is a VM appliance and as such, we're not going to see anything like real life performance on this thing - but I was wondering if there were any tips someone might share with regards to getting the best performance possible?
We are using the VB appliance to test a lab based OVM setup - and up to now, performance is too dire to even install a simple VM Guest or upload an ISO to a repository.
The host specification is 24GB RAM and 8 cores - all of which we have presented to the ZFS appliance - however doesn't seem to make any difference .
Is performance of the VB appliance throttled?
We have got OK performance out of the HP P4000 VSA (again not great - but OK for lab testing).
    Cheers,
    Jeff

    Jeff,
You are correct - the simulator is for testing a subset of functionality only. I am unaware if the VM will use more than one processor, but the RAM will help. One item I can also comment on based on experience is that iSCSI offers the best performance for demos. I use iSCSI as opposed to cifs / nfs / ftp etc. Looking at DTrace, I get much better performance - but I am running a system with only 2 disks, so even that might top out on your server. Perhaps a remote demo with the Oracle Solution Center?

  • Help needed in ASA 5540 Cluster/Failover setup

    Hello expert,
Currently we have two asa in our Datacenter setup as a Active/Standby failover setup and tested ie failover is working,(if one FW goes down), but what if a the uplink switches/links or backend switches go down, how does the active fw knows to failover ?
    Current setup
              |                                        |
        ___|___                              __|___
    ---| SW 1 |------------------------ | Sw2   |
              |                                        |
        ___|___                              __|___
    ---| FW 1 |------------------------ | FW-2 |
              |                                        |
        ___|___                              __|___
    ---| SW 1 |------------------------ | Sw2   |
In the above figure, FW1 is active and I have powerd off the uplink  SW1, but the FW2 did not take over, and the same for backend switches, So how do I configure my FW's so that any of the uplink or back end switches go down, the Active should give its role to standby to forward the traffice from a different switch ie sw2 in case sw1 goes down.
Or Is there any mechanisim where I can monitor the interfaces ie uplinks or back end links etc ?
    Your help is appreciated.
    Regards

It seems that you have LAN link directly connected between the boxes, so the unit will determine that Primary/Active has interfaces that are inactive and failover. You should read:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/vpndevc/ps2030/products_configuration_example09186a00807dac5f.shtml
This link gives you the failover triggers and failover actions.

  • Need help installing Virtual box Windows VM's

I am installing virtual box on wife's mac.   I got the instructions here: http://osxdaily.com/2011/09/04/internet-explorer-for-mac-ie7-ie8-ie-9-free/
I did it previously and it all worked well. Recently the windows session license expired so I reinstalled that portion and it worked for about a week.  Then the Virtual box program just stopped working.   So I uninstalled the virtual box and am attempting to reinstall all components.
First step is install Virtual box from here:  https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads   This went ok andvirtual box runs but there are no VM's.
There is then a script to install the windows VM's.  It is failing.
Script is accessed by copyinf this command into terminal:
    curl -s https://raw.github.com/xdissent/ievms/master/ievms.sh | bash
This is the error I get.   It seems there is a file that already exists but I'm stumped as to what to do.

Here is how I install mine, for numbers I will assume you have a 100GB HDD and 2GB of RAM:
Boot from Win7 DVD and create two partitions, then install Windows7 on one of them. During the install Windows will create a 3rd partition to boot from. You will now have:
    sda1 - 100MB - Windows Boot - boot flag
    sda2 - 50GB - Windows 7 - no flags
    sda3 - 50GB - Unpartitioned Space - no flags
Next boot into Arch and choose to manually partition the drives using cfdisk, using the unfinished space create 3 logical partitions of the sizes 100MB, 2GB, and 50GB. Mark the 100MB one you just created with a boot flag and unmark the 100MB one Windows created.
    Now you should have:
    sda1 - 100MB - Windows Boot - no flags
    sda2 - 50GB - Windows 7 - no flags
    sda3 - 50GB - Unpartitioned Space - no flags
    sda5 - 100MB - Linux Boot - boot flag
    sda6 - 2GB - Linux Swap - no flags
    sda7 - 50GB - Arch - no flags
Click OK/Confirm/Write and then continue to the next step - File Systems and Mountpoints.
Here you need to set the FS for sda5,6,7 and make sure not to touch sda1,2. Choose ext2 for sda5, swap for sda6, and ext3 for sda7. You will also be asked for mountpoints. Pick "/boot" for sda5 and "/" for sda7. Click OK/Confirm/Write and then continue to install Arch like normal, when you get to installing the bootloader make sure to install it on /dev/sda and uncomment the Windows part of the grub/menu.lst file.
Reboot the system and you are done

  • Screen Resolution in Virtual Box

    Okay, my next obstacle.
I installed guest additions as the wiki instructed:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vi … _Additions
and have xorg installed, but with the minimum xorg-server package.
I read another forum post from awhile ago about hardcoding resolution in a GRUB config file, but I don't have the config file they spoke of, and I can't seem to find the post anymore.
Screen resizing doesn't appear to work. In changing the size of the virtual box window, the screen resolution remains the same. I'm not exactly sure shared-clipboard is working either, though I don't have a definitive test for that.
Syncing the host time and guest time seems to have worked though.
How do I go about enabling screen-resizing? I would prefer if it auto-resized based on the virtualbox window size, instead of hardcoding a bigger resolution. If that's possible.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the minimum xorg-server package - just X with no desktop environment or window manager?  If so, I think that might be the issue.  As an experiment, you could clone your installation in Virtualbox, and install Xfce on the clone.  If you can resize the window with Xfce running, then you know you have everything configured properly.
For hard-coding a resolution at boot time, you can put "vga=792" in your grub config file.  I use syslinux, so I can't tell you for sure about grub.  But in syslinux, mine looks like this:
    APPEND root=/dev/sda1 ro vga=792
You can google the keywords "vga resolution codes" to find codes for other settings, but 792 will give you 1024x768 with 24 bits.
Sorry I'm not much of an expert, but hopefully that will give you some avenues to pursue.

in fact I have installed 10g on a XP PC just last week..not sure where what I am missing
i am using "Briged Adapter" Network
If anybody has experienced same issue, kindly let me know....

  • Network Limited Conectivity & Virtual-Box

Just bought a new Dell Inspiron 3137 laptop, with 64-bit Windows 8.0 installed (not 8.1). I have four legacy 16-bit programs (Bible study, Sermon editor/reference, 2 games) that I need to use as cannot find more recent versions on the market.  So initially
tried to use MS Virtual-PC but it would not install, so then installed Virtual-Box followed by Win-Xp. The W8 OS now (after serious setup efforts) connects ok under Wi-Fi and Ethernet to the internet and to computers on my home network.  But Virtual-Box
and Xp fails! looking at my "Networks" W8 pop-up window I see an entry of "Unidentified Network" and that it has limited connectivity. Xp indicates "connected" but received packet count is 0.
Think this is a result of my attempts & connections under Virtual-Box.  I go to Network and Sharing Center and find first 2 category are enabled but  "All Networks" entry is disabled/off and I cannot find any way to enable! I go to
"Network Connections page and I see 6 entries (Bluetooth, Netgear router, broadband, Virtual-Box, etc). I run the troubleshooter on the Virtual-Box link and am informed that it cannot fix & no useful help provided to me by system!  No progress
w/ comparability mode on legacy programs.
I have initially informed Dell Technical support then most recently Oracle of this problem >>> both say it is not their product malfunctioning and that errors are in configuration of Windows-8 >> but no help.
This is serious irritation as have already wasted about 40 hours chasing/messing with this problem  >>>> NEED HELP AND SUGGESTIONS - PLEASE!
    Thanks .....

Thanks Kevin for the reply, but no progress here.  I am completely new to Windows 8.0 and slightly new to any networking, so keep that in mind should you decide to reply again,  A.K.A., I might need a bit of step-by-step assistance .....
The symptoms here : My new Dell computer finally now connects by wi-fi to home network, has always connected to internet. I am using Virtual-Box v4.12.18 w/ Xp Pro, SP-3. Under Xp in Network I note that it shows "Connected" but received packet
count is 0, sent packet count is hundreds. Looking within W8 at advanced settings, I see 3 network types, 1) Private = enabled, 2) Guest = enabled, 3) All = NOT enabled (and I can find no click, link or setting that
will enable). Have tried with Network Discovery on & off, and with File Sharing on & off, and with 56-bit & 128-bit encryption selected alternatively. So run the Troubleshooter = first pass informed
it could not fix problem : later, troubleshooter stated it fix some problem(s) with incoming connections = at that point I looked and found that under W8 both sent & received packet count was into low thousand but Xp still showed 0 receive.
When I look at Networks under W8 I see "Netgear52" W/ no errors, then see either "Unidentified Network (limited connectivity) OR randomly  see "VirtualBox (Limited Connectivity) and so think Netgear52 is what I should be using.
Again under W8 networking pages, I try "Setup Network - Chose Wireless Router" am asked for SSID (whatever?) but showing nothing after 10-minutes. Have made all efforts both with & without Firewall on Xp & I think on W8 also, no changes
to Security Essentials  Xp is in NAT mode and have not yet tried "Bridged."
    "ipconfig?"
Base system here are : Dell 3137 Inspiron laptop, Win 8.0 + Win-Xp Pro. Motorola Surfboard cable modem. Netgear52 router. Various home networked Eithernet connected computers. Various Tablet & eBook readers connected Wi-Fi. No other component is
reporting any errors and all work Ok.  Xp is Ok except zero connectivity to Internet and home network.  Need to get Xp connected so can access data for legacy programs off home & church networks.
So your help seriously appreciated!    Bill

  • Linux password in virtual box

I have gotten linux running in a virtual box.
However, it wants as user name/password. I don't know what it is or how to set it up.
I did not see any opportunity to set up an account when I was installing it.
I tried various reasonable guess (like my oracle acct), but no luck
So how do I set this up? Is there some place in 'virtual box' to set up accounts. I'm running on my home machine, so no big need for security ...
    -Traruh
PS. Is there a better forum for this question?

The Linux installation typically asks to set a password for the root account during the installation. It also asks to create a non privileged user in the final post installation after the first reboot, provided yo have installed the graphical user interface. It is not possible to tell based on your information what you installed or what you are prompted for. If you are prompted to logon, you can use the username "root" and use the password you set during the installation.
The root account is a built-in account on all Linux/Unix systems with all privileges. If you have not used Linux before I suggest to search for beginners information and tutorials in Google; there are plenty.
Virtualbox does not manage any computer accounts. Your Windows login usually has nothing to do with your VM guest OS. If you forgot the root password of your Linux guest OS, you can reset it booting into "single" user mode.

  • ERROR installing MAC OSX onto my W510 Mint 9 Virtual Box.....

    Hi all,
Im running Linux Mint 9 & trying to install osx 10.6.3 via latest virtual box. (for viewing purposes only!!)  Ive tried it with Empire EFI, iBoot and Legacy boot cd.
All settings in VB are as tutorials that are out there on the web so im pretty sure my settings are ok. Once one of the above bootable discs loads it asks me to replace the disc with the msc os dvd (retail) and then press F5
So i wait for the osx disc to mount, wait for about 1-2 minutes (as advised),  press F5 and the disc starts spinning for about a second then stops.  The following error then comes up on the Virtual screen window:
    Block 0x18a96a sectors 0
this continues to scroll down the page then nothing. Im pretty much useless at pc's and i only use them for wmy work (CAD) Ive been getting help from a guy who is trying to step by step me through the installation process, he has installed it but running Ubuntu.
Here is the link to our blog he has created on his web page. (which i have to say a big thanks you to him for)
    Moderator edit; Link removed
So can anyone suggest why the disc is not loading from the DVD drive? possibly a simple setting on my w510?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
