Virtual Box Installation

My Laptop has Windows 8 Single Language edition as was preinstall when I bought it. I need Linux too on this PC but found that Oracle's VirtualBox does not install. Says that the os does not recognize the file type. Can anyone solve this problem i face. Also is it possible to dual boot Windows 8 with Ubuntu 12.04

I think progress is being made
I get this error now
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
Stopping VirtualBox kernel module [  OK  ]
Recompiling VirtualBox kernel module [FAILED]
(Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong)
[root@user ~]# more /var/log/vbox-install.log
make KBUILD_VERBOSE=1 -C /boot SUBDIRS=/tmp/vbox.0 SRCROOT=/tmp/vbox.0 modules
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `modules'. Stop.
make: *** [vboxdrv] Error 2
I still have no idea what this means. Is anyone able to throw some light on this issue

    Hi there
To be able to use Arch on a Virtual Machine you'll have to remove the VM's Guest Additions and install the Guest Additions from the Arch's repository instead.
    # pacman -S virtualbox-archlinux-additions virtualbox-archlinux-modules
Then add the proper modules to your MODULE array in /etc/rc.conf
    MODULES=(vboxvideo vboxsf vboxguest)
Best of Luck. Enjoy your virtualized Arch

  • [SOLVED] Virtual Box Installation - vboxdrv setup

Hello,  second day on Arch here and learning as much as I can but can't seem to get VirtualBox up and running.
I am following the guide found here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VirtualBox
    So far I have run
    pacman -S virtualbox-ose
gpasswd -a USERNAME vboxusers #Putting my username in of course
    /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv setup
That last line there is where I run into problems.  I get the error message
    [USERNAME@HOST ~]$ sudo /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv setup
:: Unloading VirtualBox kernel modules [DONE]
:: Recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules [BUSY]
Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong

Any suggestions on where to go from here? I have tried continuing with the other commands listed in the wiki but they do not work without this step.  I have also restarted to make sure the gpasswd had finished and verified that my username was part of the vboxusers group.
    Thank in advance!

  • Installation as guest OS on Virtual Box

    Hi,
I have downloaded Oracle Enterprise Linux and am trying to use the same as guest OS in Virtual Box on Windows Vista. While I managed to complete the installation successfully, I am not able to use it. When I power on the virtual machine and enter my username and password, it only displays a blank screen and nothing happens.
Can you help me out with this please ?

As advised previously, run system-config-display. Another way to modify the screen resolution is to modify it directly in the X settings. But please try system-config-display.Thanks for your reply. I tried modifying the display resolutions from "System->Preference->Screen Resolution", but the only options available there are "800x600" and "640x320". Incidently, when checked in "System->Administration->Display" window, the video card is shown as "Unknow Video Card". Selecting any of the video cards from "Configure..." button does not help either.
I am not used to Linux and hence am trying to do things using GUI interface. Please let me know if I have to use text mode to do something that can not be achieved in GUI mode.

  • Does the installation of virtual box harms the MacBook

I am an IT student and I am about to download Ubuntu in my Mac. According to the research I have done I found that a virtual box should be downloaded to run Ubuntu (Please correct me if I am wrong). Does this make my mac run slow? Are there any other ways to use Ubuntu in my mac. Please help me cause I am having a rush time.

It shouldn't harm the MBPr, but you should make a complete backup before proceeding.

Later my friend said this version of Linux does not support Oracle. Can any-you of you please let me know, what I need to download from http://www.centos.org/?

What does this have to do with java?
And why do you think you need linux to learn Oracle?

  • ISight Camera on Windows Xp as a virtual machine in Virtual Box

I'm using Virtual Box to run Windows Xp in my MacBook Pro. I have been trying to have a video conference through Messenger but iSight is not being recognized. I've gone through the process of installing the Guest Additions and there I've selected iSight. But when windows try to install the new detected hardware, does not find any driver for iSight. Has anyone been lucky to make iSight Camera work properly under this environment? I've gone to Virtual Box forum and I haven't found any positive answer.
    Message was edited by: RudyGomez

You’re absolutely right. I installed the Skype program in Mac OS X directly and not in any virtual machine. I forgot to say this. I’m using Virtual Box of Sun Microsystems as the virtualization software and not Parallels neither VMware Fusion neither BootCamp. I went to Virtual Box forums and there is not solution for the moment to make it work the iSight Camera because there is not a driver. Anyway I tried to get the driver from the installation disk that you told me but the Windows virtual machine does not catch the DVD by any means, I tried in different ways and not one worked. Besides I read that the drivers that comes with the installation DVD only works for Boot Camp. I’m not at all an expert on this.
In spite that now I can have a videoconference with my Windows’ friends and relatives, I’m still waiting for the proper solution to the iSight driver in Virtual Box.
Thanks a lot for your suggestion.

  • Install stuck: SBS 2011 Essentials on a Virtual Box

I’m trying to do a test install of SBS 2011 Essentials on a Virtual Box virtual machine running on a Win7 64-bit machine. I put the install partition on an external
    drive.
The install stops on a window that is titled Installing Windows. The screens says: “There was a problem during the installation. To restart the installation
click Restart. You can also view the installation error logs.”
When I open those installation error logs, I see no error. (It does have Info and Warning lines.)
I’m stuck there. If I could paste in the the contents of the error logs I would, but I can’t copy from the VM until there is an installed OS.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hello Rob,
There may still be a problem with two things.'
    1) Installing it on your external hard drive.  If it is a 'usb' drive, then it seems at times the software\drivers still causes some type of conflict depending on what type of system you have.
    2) Your network interface card is configured set.
Going off the assumption that you have the latest virtual box software, your problem may be point number '1'
Solution that works for some: Installed the virtual machine locally. (Remember, you can still set the disk dynamically to 160 whether you have the space locally or not)  Then transfered it to an external drive after everything  was installed and
    working.
Caveat: Shame to say, you may  not have local storage  large enough to hold the vm. This is why you probably bought the external drive in the first place.  Hope this helps. Just find a machine that will allow you to create the vm locally first
    if you can.

  • Screen Resolution in Virtual Box

    Okay, my next obstacle.
I installed guest additions as the wiki instructed:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vi … _Additions
and have xorg installed, but with the minimum xorg-server package.
I read another forum post from awhile ago about hardcoding resolution in a GRUB config file, but I don't have the config file they spoke of, and I can't seem to find the post anymore.
Screen resizing doesn't appear to work. In changing the size of the virtual box window, the screen resolution remains the same. I'm not exactly sure shared-clipboard is working either, though I don't have a definitive test for that.
Syncing the host time and guest time seems to have worked though.
How do I go about enabling screen-resizing? I would prefer if it auto-resized based on the virtualbox window size, instead of hardcoding a bigger resolution. If that's possible.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the minimum xorg-server package - just X with no desktop environment or window manager?  If so, I think that might be the issue.  As an experiment, you could clone your installation in Virtualbox, and install Xfce on the clone.  If you can resize the window with Xfce running, then you know you have everything configured properly.
For hard-coding a resolution at boot time, you can put "vga=792" in your grub config file.  I use syslinux, so I can't tell you for sure about grub.  But in syslinux, mine looks like this:
    APPEND root=/dev/sda1 ro vga=792
You can google the keywords "vga resolution codes" to find codes for other settings, but 792 will give you 1024x768 with 24 bits.
Sorry I'm not much of an expert, but hopefully that will give you some avenues to pursue.

  • OSX in virtual box

Is there a way to create a disk image of osx, preferably clean, to run in virtual box? I would like to use this disk image to run sketchy software before i run it on my real copy of osx therefore (hopefully) avoiding viruses and keeping my personal information safe.

Not sure about VirtualBox, but I've done this with VMware Fusion for both Lion and Mountain Lion (their license allows running them in a virtual machine).
I did my install using the downloaded Lion and Mountain Lion installer.

    Suggestions?

    Hi,
I have upgraded my VirtualBox Vm to 10049. I did not have any problems, it took a long time though. As others have said, check your video memory (I have 128MB) also your free HDD space, You should need at least 8GB free. I am running VirtualBox v 4.3.24.
    Hope this helps.
    Paul
