Virtual box vs Oracle Vm

Hi,
I want to know the pros and cons for tehse 2 products whicg Oracle owns
If i have to use Virtual box as it has features like snapshots - using physical serial port of the server on the VM guest and using USB's , what are the pre - requisites to use it
Is this as stable as Oracle VM and a freeware?
Can i install server OS as guests with Virtual box.
Like Oracle VM has - VM server which has OEL as base and is managed by Oracm VM manager - how is the setup for Virtual box.
Thanks.......

Virtualbox is an application, similar in configuration and setup like VMware, VirtualPC and other VM applications that need a host Operating system. Oracle VM server has it's on OS and usually gets installed on a bare metal computer.

It seems for the purpose of testing you might be able to install it as a guest OS in VMware Fusion and maybe Virtualbox:
http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=31357
From what I understand, Virtualbox is not a certified platform for Oracle Enterprise Linux and running Oracle database. However, Oracle VM and VMware ESX are certified platforms for OEL when installed directly on the computer hardware.

  • Can't install oracle 10g on windows XP(Virtual Box)

    Hi all,
I have installed windows XP in Virtual Box, trying to install Oracle 10g in it. It won't start the installation..no clue about it.  I installed winrar(as the 10g setup was in rar format, had to extract it).
without any issues winrar got installed, where as Oracle 10g simply wont get installed...no error message is thrown..
in fact I have installed 10g on a XP PC just last week..not sure where what I am missing
i am using "Briged Adapter" Network
If anybody has experienced same issue, kindly let me know....

    Hi Srini,
Thanks for helping me with the link to be frank I had looked into it long back...
yes the software worked just yesterday, I had installed on XP(different machine).
I added my PC to domain, logged in as Administrator & double clicked, same....no response.
At last I used "command prompt" and it worked!!   not sure how or why...but worked.
Now my database is created successfully
Yes would like to know why this happened....and how things worked via command prompt & not by double click....would greatly appreciate if anybody helps me on this.

  • Installing oracle db 10.2.0.1 on REHL 5.6 using virtual box

I can't solve this erratic behavior:
Scenario: Phisical machine Windows 7 32b, virtual box v 3.2.12
Virtual machine Oracle Linux 5.6 64b installed without problems (I have installed several machines with p.e. SuSE 10 64b,
SuSE 11 64b and installed Oracle 10g without problems, Linux Oracle 5.6 with Oracle DB 11 ok)
Trying to install Oracle 10.2.0.1 (need to be this version) every time I exec runInstaller, it begins, but simply freezes the
machine. Each time it freezes at different points: sometimes at the first screen, other times I can reach the last screen with
    the install button.
¿can someone give any ideas ?
    Thanks

    First attempt
The oui freezed the virtual machine, in the screen where i was setting the users passwords
Checking the oraInventory/logs folder, ther are 3 files:

  • Installing Oracle Linux 5.8 on Virtual Box

I'm trying to install Oracle Linux 5.8 on Virtual Box. I have downloaded V31120-01 and burned to the DVD, I think successfully.
However, when I start the Virtual machine, I get the Opening screen, "Oracle Linux" the little picture of the penguin guy, etc, so I think my DVD is good.
The screen says, "To install or upgrade in graphical mode, press the <enter> key." So I do.
Several lines of text flow across the screen, but then the process seems to stop with no prompt on what to do next or any indication that an error has occurred, it just stops.
The last lines I can see are:
    ACPI: bus type pci registered
    PCI: Using configuration type 1
    ACPI: Interpreter enabled
ACPI: Using PIC for interrupt routing
    ACPI: No dock devices found

I'm not sure if it's waiting for some input from me, or if there is a problem, but nothing happens beyond this point until I power down the virtual machine.

There is no need to burn a DVD because Virtualbox can directly mount and boot from the .iso image you downloaded. It is usually a good idea to check the md5 checksum of your download with the number provided by the download page to verify your download is not corrupted. There are no problems installing any version of Oracle Linux under Virtualbox provided you have the right hardware. I suggest to check the Virtualbox documentation.

  • Importing Oracle Virtual Box VM into OVS 2.2

    Hi All,
1] We bought a New Dell PowerEdge Server. we installed the OVS 2.2 onto the same.
2] Now I have couple of VM that are riunning inside VirtualBox S/w. I created these m/c for POC's.
3] I want to move these machines to OVS 2.2 server so that it will be run by OVS and managed by OVM.
There is no clear documentation regarding the same. There is no vm.cfg file for the Virtual Box.
For a Std VirtualBox machine; we have .ovf and couple of .vmdk files. I have multiple .vmdk file for my single VM.
Can you point me to docs/procedure on how to migrate these machines from VirtualBox env(which is 2008 server running virtualBox Client) to OVS server 2.2??
    Regards
    Sushil

I executed the V2V process for converting the VMWare Images to OVM but mine are Oracle VirtualBox Images
To import VMware VMDK images using Oracle VM Manager, follow the same process you would to import any other virtual machine image resource, generally
from an external source (HTTP or FTP location), using the Import wizard. Or you can copy the VMDK image files manually into /OVS/running_pool directory.
Oracle VM will automatically detect that the image is in the VMDK format and convert the image file to an Oracle VM format and deploy it to the specified
    Server Pool.
The OVS is detecting the directory containing the files for my VM. After importing the manager UI is failing with "OVM-5004 Invalid virtual machine config file." error

I have installed Oracle Virtual box on windows server 2008 r2 hosted on 1und1.de.
Till installtion and setting up untun on virtualbox it was fine, but once i changed the adapater to bridged mode. I immediatly lost connectivity with my server and now cant access.
It is now 2 days i cant access my server and neither ping it, also the website hosted on it is also down.
The 1und1 has following 2 options
    1) using putty i can connect to server command prompt using administrator but cant run any gui application
    2) Server Rescue mode: where i get special environment to start, stop services, access registry and command prompt.
Till now i have tried lot of setting to enable network connectivity but not able to success
This is the result of Ipconfig /all

    Hi,
According to the result of "ipconfig /all", the physical adapter dosen't appear.
Please check if the physical network adapter works properly. We can verify this in Device Manager.
To open Device Manager by using the Windows interface
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    Click Hardware and Sound.
    Click Device Manager.
If the network adapter is working properly, please make sure that the Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) has been checked in the properties of the physical network adapter.
If issue persists, please try to uninstall the Oracle Virtual box.
    Best Regards.

  • Can the IPad run Oracle's Virtual Box?

There is a programme from my old Windows set up that I can't get for my iMac, so I run Oracle's Virtual Box that allows for a Windows environment to run on my Mac. So, I'm interested in whether an iPad can do the same thing. Can anyone help, please?

You cannot run the virtual machine directly on the iPad but you should be able to connect to the desktop of a virtual machine using one of the remote desktop connection apps.

    Hi,
Before discussing the network configuration of Oracle Linux 7 (By the way; it seams correct), lets talk about the VirtualBox network configuration, So the Network adapter of your VM can be attached to {NAT, Bridged Adapter, Internal Network, Host-only Adapter, ...}, what is the Adapter attached to your NIC?
Make sure the Network Adapter is the same as the your other VM (OL 5.8).
    Best regards

  • Run solaris 11 on 32 bit oracle VM virtual Box  (windows)

    Hi All,
Is there any way to run Solaris 11 (64bit only), on a 32 bit windows machine using oracle VM virtual Box ?
    Thanks

Excerpt VirtualBox "Hardware vs. software virtualization",
    https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch10.html#hwvirt
"VirtualBox's 64-bit guest support (added with version 2.0) and multiprocessing (SMP, added with version 3.0) both require hardware virtualization to be enabled. (This is not much of a limitation since the vast majority of today's 64-bit and multicore CPUs ship with hardware virtualization anyway; the exceptions to this rule are e.g. older Intel Celeron and AMD Opteron CPUs.)
You cannot nest HV on HV.
You can nest PV on PV,
"Oracle VM VirtualBox virtual appliance images for Oracle VM 3.1.1 server and Manager",

  • Oracle VM Manager 3.1.1 in virtual box ?

The ISO for Oracle VM Manager does not boot when using virtual box ?

Yes you have to install a Linux 5 or 6 first then install the ISO. But be warned, f you do not have at least 4GB of memory allocated to the VirtualBox instance you will not be able to install OVM software. My Win7 32 bit machine could not host OVM for this reason. I run my OVM on a dedicated cheap Intel ION server, 4GB's is just enough, as you have Weblogic and Oracle db Express running on the Manager tier.
