Virtual console problem after switching runlevels

After switching into runlevel 5, the cursor on all virtual consoles (1-5) is stuck at the top left of the screen, and screen scrolling is disabled.
If I boot with runlevel 3, everything works fine, until I manually change into runlevel 5.
I'm not sure if this is related to the latest Xorg upgrade, but things used to work well until not long ago.

Sounds familiar. If you have similar hardware... is http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=61517 of any help?

  • Management console problem after installing recommended patch cluster

    Hello everyone.
I just got a new SUN 440 server, it didn't come with the solaris os installed and so I installed solaris 9 12/03 to it. The installation went fine and I could start the management console with no problems at all. Then I went to sunsolve.sun.com to download the latest recommended patch clusters for solaris 9 (this was yesterday Sept.-06-2006), I downloaded the file, checked it with md5sum, unzipped it, went to single user mode and ran the install_patch script. After the patch cluster finished installing I rebooted the server for the patches to take effect, I logged in, tried to run console management 2.1 and it starts OK but I cannot use any services it offers because it says (in the console events):
"Server Not Running: no solaris management console server was available on the specified server. Please ensure there is a Solaris Management Console server available on the specified host and that it is running"
When I click on "See Exception" I get (for a particular service that is... in this case com.sun.admin.fsmgr.client.VFsMgr - for managing file systems):
    java.rmi.RemoteException: Server RMI is null:
    at sun.com.management.viperimpl.client.ViperClient.lookupServer(ViperClient.java:376)and so on...
I already checked that the service is running on port 898 and it seems that there is no other app. using that same port. I also restarted the service using /etc/init.d.init stop/status/start but I get the same results.
I don't know solaris very much and don't know what else to do, please help.
    Thanks in advance.

Well, I guess what you see isn't what you get.
Guess I'm used to the fact USENET just left things formatted the way they were :-O

  • BizTalk Administration Console problem after installing IBM iSeries Access

    Hi,
We have a Biztalk Server 2010 environment on Windows Server 2008 R2 with SQL server on separate machine.
After installing IBM iSeries Access we get errors in Biztalk Administration Console, especially the Host Instance and Adapter information cannot be loaded.
Except for the errors in Adminsitration Console, the Biztalk installation seems to be working fine, so the integration processes doesn't seem to be affected.
    We get the following error:
BizTalk Server cannot access SQL server.  This could be due to one of the following reasons:
    1. Access permissions have been denied to the current user.  Either log on as a user that has been granted permissions to SQL and try again, or grant the current user permission to access SQL Server.
    2. The SQL Server does not exist or an invalid database name has been specified.  Check the name entered for the SQL Server and database to make sure they are correct as provided during SQL Server installation.
    3. The SQL Server exists, but is not currently running.  Use the Windows Service Control Manager or SQL Enterprise Manager to start SQL Server, and try again.
    4. A SQL database file with the same name as the specified database already exists in the Microsoft SQL Server data folder.
Internal error from OLEDB provider: "The type initializer for 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection' threw an exception." (WinMgmt)
I tried to uninstall the IBM iSeries Access, but the problem remains.

Hi and thanks for your help!
    The machine.config did it :)
According to this link there is a known issue with the IBM iSeries Access installation which removes the proper permissions from the machine.config and therefore Biztalk Administration Console stops working correctly.

  • Differnt problems after switching to Apple ID

After being forced to switch my AOL account to an Apple account, I lost the remaining on my gift card. Now, when I enter the code, iTunes tells me that card has already been redeemed. But I had over $10 left on it!!
And when I go into my account details, it lists the last song I purchased was back in March 2008, when I had purchased some last week under the new Apple ID.
I'm waiting for iTunes support to write me back. If anyone has any suggestions in the meantime, I'm listening.

I also had an Apple ID prior to this switch but have forgotten the user and password. It seems like when I created a new ID from AOL screen name, it recognized my email (because I had to use a valid email address to create this new Apple ID)and merged the AOL name with my current account. But it lost all of the AOL purchasing and gift card data.
When I signed in to post these topics, I entered my new Apple ID but found my old user name and all my old Apple discussions questions still intact.

  • Sync problems after switch from Windows to Mac; cannot read/write error msg

I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue.
I recently switched from a PC to a Mac. To move my iTunes files (50GB) I simply dragged and dropped them from my external HD to my new computer. I know that Apple does not recommend this process, but when I needed to move my library between drivers earlier this year, it was the only way I could do it without getting an error message that killed the process.
Moving the files seemed to be a success. Everything appeared in iTunes, I was able to play the music, etc.
I then tried synching my iPod (Classic 160 GB – I think 5th gen, it’s about 3 years old) on the new computer. I got some message that said you can only have one iPod per account and that I would have to wipe the iPod before syncing. I let it do that.
    Here's where problems began:
With a few gigs to go in the sync I got a message that says something to the effect that iTunes cannot read or write to the iPod. Even though must of the library had been transferred to the iPod, before disconnecting the iPod iTunes wiped all but a few hundred megs worth of music from it. I've tried restoring the iPod a few times but that has had no effect. The first time I tried to sync the iPod it was formatted for Windows. I have reformatted it for Mac.
Also noteworthy is that the first 3/4ths of my library copies very quickly -- 1GB a minute -- but then it eventually slows down to where 100 MB takes 10 minutes. It copies the files in a different order every time, so it doesn't look like it's getting hung up on the same files every time.
In case I had a corrupted file, I deleted all the files added to the library since my last successful sync.
    Suggestions?
Should I just go to the nearest Apple store and beg for mercy?

    Hi!
same problem here.I can use around 30G of my iPod Classic 160G.If i try to upload more than that it will take very long time and finally freezes.
Have no idea what to do..

  • [Solved] Several problems after switch to systemd

After many issues with today's update (like broken locale, broken suspend2ram, broken shutdown/restart, broken autologin, broken CPU clocking, broken fan control and broken wicd) I'm stuck with three of them, the most important being wicd.
Autologin is working now and after login I have to enter a password for wicd (which was not the case before the update). After entering the password I get the dbus connection error: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/wi … or_message If I kill wicd (which is runnig directly after boot, but not running properly), starting and stopping and starting again with systemctl works fine. But the autostart mostly fails for some reason (in rare cases it works though). I'm quite new to systemd and don't even know hot to open the new journal in a proper editor to search for errors efficiently.
The second thing is that the locale is being reset to C or POSIX I suppose, at least it's not German as it should be and also is set in /etc/locale.conf.
The third thing is that the Thinkpad fan control fails to start, too. I created a .conf file to load the thinkpad_acpi module which seems to work. If I start /usr/sbin/tpfand manually, the fan control works. But here also the autostart fails.
Sorry for the confused description containing about nothing on error or debug information, but I don't really know where to start digging and get useful information about systemd.
    Thanks for any hint,
    PhotonX

  • FCP problems after switching from my G5 to a MacPro

I used the Migration Assistant to switch from my old computer to my new one and am now experiencing two annoying things with my FCP project:
    1. When I try to Render I get a "File Access Denied" message.
    2. When I make changes on my timeline I get a "Preparing video for display" message and the computer takes several seconds to make the changes. This didn't happen on my older G5
    Thanks.

Migration Assistant doesn't work for professional applications. You will have to uninstall FCS and reinstall. Use this to uninstall.

  • Problem after switch to IMac

I just switched from a G5 to a new Intel iMac. When I access Time Machine I can see the bars on the right hand side, but they have no dates associated with them, and I am unable to restore anything. Is this a function of switching machine, and is there a way to access the old information?
    Thanks

    G5 is PPC and APS
    Intel is Intel and GUID
I don't think you can transfer TM from one type of machine to the other.

  • Itunes Problems After Switching PCs

Bought a new PC. Backed up song library from Itunes onto external drive (different folder name if that's important). Copied folder from ext drive onto C: of new PC. Songs appear to be in Itunes however , for most songs, when I click I get the message:
The song xxx could not be found because the original file could not be found.
I answer "yes" to "would you like to search for it." I can find the song and it pulls it into Itunes where I can click on it and it plays.
Next time I sync, same thing happens.
I'm sure it has something to do with the transfer. I'm just not smart enough to know what's going on.
If the file path that is in preferences is where I copied the songs to what else has to happen?

No, I was talking about the drive letter for the external drive.
I guess I don't understand what order you did things in.
I thought you had an old PC, and moved your iTunes library to the external hard drive using thes steps:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305451
Then you plugged your ex HD into the new PC and it had a different drive letter.

    Hi BOSSKILLER
    Thanks for your quick response.

Well, leave the 80GB only and install XP over it.
Then connect other two HDD's and enable RAID for them.
Unfortunately this didn't help. As soon as I installed the Windows nVidia RAID SW it prompted med that it had registered  the 80 GB disk as a new disk that wasn't a member of any RAID. This happened everytime Windows XP was started.
The trick was to add the 80 GB disk as a Spanned disk using the nVidia RAID BIOS setup utility. Install Windows XP (again) and the Windows nVidia RAID SW and setup RAID 1 on the other two sata disk.
I don't think this is a great setup but it works. I hope that MSI will fix this issue in a later BIOS upgrade. It would be nice if the enabled/disabled for sata RAID setting actually worked.

  • Problem after switching video cards

Using Arch on a x86_64, i had everything set up and working with GNOME and Compiz-Fusion, the cube, wobble windows, a custom theme with emerald, etc. Then i did a little hardware upgrade (added a gig of ram, took out my ati radeon x800 gt and replaced it with a nvidia GeForce 9800 GT 512MB card. I uninstalled the radeon drivers, w/e i installed from the ATI wiki page, then followed the nvidia wiki page.
When i startx, the desktop loads just fine, but when i open a window (ie Trash, Firefox) there is no bar across the top (to minimize, maximize, move window, close).
I disabled fusion-icon from running on startup, brought back my xserver, opened a XTerminal (which has that default blue bar on the top) and ran fusion-icon. Error messages were:
compiz (cube) - Warn: Failed to load slidE: freedesktop
compiz (cube) - Warn: Failed to load slidE: freedesktop
compiz (cube) - Warn: No GLXFBConfig for depth32
compiz (cube) - Warn: No GLXFBConfig for depth32

compiz (cube) - Warn: No GLXFBConfig for depth32
compiz (cube) - Warn: No GLXFBConfig for depth32
and of course, no more bars on my windows. Anybody run into this/know how to fix it?
One more thing, heres my xorg.conf
    http://rafb.net/p/4IvrpH98.html

i used 1280x1024 for my windows instance on that machine. I think thats my max res as well, i use some Westinghouse L1928NV 19", yeah and thats the max res.
Why would that effect my having no bars on my window? It worked with the old card, this card is newer, supports a higher res than my old one, that shouldbe be the issue.

  • Display lost when switching virtual consoles (xorg 1.12.1-1)

    Hi all,
About a week ago I noticed that I will sometimes be left with a black screen when I switch between virtual consoles using Ctrl+Alt+F8, etc. The system is still running, and can be communicated with over the network, but, short of rebooting via ssh or killing X, there seems to be nothing I can do to get the screen working again. It seems especially common when switching between F7 and F8 (both graphical) but sometimes occurs when switching from a graphical to a text based console (F1-F6).
I have downgraded from recent versions of xorg-server, xorg-server-common and the nvidia drivers to see if the problem would go away, but without success.
    Thanks for your thoughts!

Well, many 20-nvidia-conf files later, the problem persists.
Not only that, but the number of jumps between virtual consoles before failure seems to be perfectly consistent. I login as one user (a GUI session on tty7), then switch user to open a new GUI session on tty8. Now, (using Ctrl+Alt+F7 or F8, as appropriate), I switch back to the first user (enter a password because opening the new session locks the first one), switch back to the second user, back to the first, and then try switch back to the second ... and all is lost. The fifth switch fails: every ... single ... time.
I'd appreciate it if someone else using an Nvidia card and the proprietary drivers would try this procedure and see if they too face the black screen after the fifth switch. If you do, it's not something I've misconfigured on my own, but an issue with a package (probably nvidia's) that I suppose I'll just have to wait for a fix for.
    Thanks!

  • [Solved] switching virtual consoles without exiting X

hi! i remember that in ubuntu, if i press ctrl+alt+F1 to F6 o can switch virtual consoles and if i return for example to VC/1 my session stays the same, but in arch if i do that when i return to VC/1 from another, i found that my x where killed, i run fluxbox with nothing more, maybe that is the problem but dont know how to that, for example without gnome or kde

  • Slim, a problem with virtual consoles and a question about reboot

hi, just installed slim but now when I switch to the virtual consoles my session on X starts firing keyboard events on the consoles I have there, how can I fix that?
I'm using xmonad, my terminal is sakura and I'm starting slim from /etc/inittab and xmonad from ~/.xinitrc
also, it seems slim uses special usernames to halt and reboot however those ask me for the root password, is there a way to avoid that?
    thanks all.

this http://developer.berlios.de/bugs/?func= … up_id=2663 might be related.  out of curiosity, why are you starting slim from /etc/inittab and not as a daemon in /etc/rc.conf?
Samus_ wrote:also, it seems slim uses special usernames to halt and reboot however those ask me for the root password, is there a way to avoid that?
the flippant answer is, "yes, fix slim."  but so as not to be a jerk, 'man slim' turns up this:
The 'halt' and 'reboot' commands need the root password, this may change in future releases.
so i was about to say, "no."  then i decided to hit google with 'slim "special usernames" password'.   unfortunately, your post here is the fourth result, so no love there.
    *but* there's this:
    http://developer.berlios.de/bugs/?func= … up_id=2663
    and this:
    http://developer.berlios.de/patch/?func … up_id=2663
    and the abs.
so if you really want it, read the wiki page on the abs, add the patch to the pkgbuild, makepkg, and pacman -U.  if you don't want pacman to replace your patched version when there's an update, add slim to the IgnorePkg line in /etc/pacman.conf.  you'll have to re-makepkg and re-pacman -U whenever there's an update, but it ain't that hard.
if it works, i might like a copy of yr pkgbuild.  hth!
