Virtual Copies not written to files?

I have lightroom on both my office mac and my laptop. They both have their own catalogues but share the photo's other network.
They both have "Automatically write changes to XMP" set. And I right click on the folder and synchronize when changing between comps.
I seem to have run into a problem though. I used the create virtual copy function on the laptop to do some black and white version of some photo's. But coming back to my office comp, I've synchronized the folder but the virtual copies don't appear to have made the leap.
Is this to be expected, a bug or a lack of foresight?

Virtual Copies, Stacks and Collections are not exported to XMP.
To share such you need to export a Catologue and import on the other machine. Since they share the actual images you can just export the folders or collecions you are working with that have change without the "negatives" and previews.
THis will then share everything you have down nti just the normal stuff that gets exported to XMP.

  • Virtual copies not visible

Oh God, can some one PLEASE help me???I can't contact Adobe by phone,m too late and it says everyone else busy, try later...right.
I DID review as much as I could possibly read, and NOTHING is of help.
    1. Made virtual copies, count goes up, can't see them in grid in library, develop, or in loupe.  Thought they were stacked, but when I went to Photo>stacking> the rest is all grayed out...can't do anything.  "set as master copy" also grayed out,.  Read somewhere "preferences for lightroom might be corrupt"????   I tried to do the thing in the library to correct the preferences,:(on moubntain lion 10.8.3), but in the user file there is no library...so I then looked up how to find the hidden library, but I can't  find the stuff to do THAT!!!  And, there IS a library on my hard drive, but when I open THAT up, there isn't anything about preferences.
I JUST bought this 2 mos ago--how can it have corrupt preferences when I only just started using it???--used it once, then discovered diddn't have right processor in old computer...bought a new computer...took several weeks to get (bought increased ram)...now I am just using for first time today.  Started importing, but they are all coming up missing photoi (when I had lightroomn installed on old computer, I deleted uit and pics), then reinstalled and it was migrated over to this new computer.  I looked up how to massive transfer missing photos and there is NO folder with a question mark, so I have to do hundreds and hundreds manually--can I tell you I am really hating LR4.4????? Right now I am hating photography and LR and I am beyond upset.  I got back from vacation a month ago, and STILL haven't been able to process my pics!!!
    Disgruntled King Tut's Mom---p.s.PLEEZ help be4 I have a nervous breakdown !!!

thanks...very strange.  so first, I found a thread that said could have corrupt preferences...the short of it:  caslled Apple support--he showed me how topull out the hidden "library (it wasn't that easy as it was written on a webpage here).  I found LR preferences and they were corrupt--there was almost nothing in them.  Followed instructions on webpage here, and redid them and it looked QUITE different!
Thwn by accident I discovered that if I click on ALL photographs, the virtual copies were there, but not in the 2013 folder specifically.  don't understand that.  I later closed out and restarted, and now they are everywhere they are supposed to be, so I think it was the corrupt prefderences.  Also, now the mouse is working on the actual photo again......VERY odd.
However, I am afraid to download anymore pictures because of what has been happening...the question mark, then another box telling me the metadata has been changed by both LR and another application, and do I want LR to import settings from disk or overwrite disk setrtings with those from the catalog?  I have no idea what this means...what does it mean, disk?. or from catalog?  Does it mean there were these pics still somewhere else on my computer and LR is confused?  I sure am.  The drink sounds very good......
    CAN ANYONE HELP??

  • Virtual Copies Not Showing Up

So, going along and doing some editing by creating virtual copies and now new copies I make aren't showing up. It stopped doing that and now it's doing it again. I've accidentally made six virtual copies, then it stacked them together but wouldn't unstack when I right clicked. With this photo, I've created a virtual copy but in the grid it doesn't show up at all:
But other virtual copies from the other day do:
I have no idea why this happened. How do I get all my photos, including ALL virtual copies to show up in the grid? Unstacking is not an option:
    I'm so confused. Thanks.

    Nope, didn't undo afterwards.
    @ dj_paige
    >Are you in a collection when you create the virtual copy?
I was. I've done it before and no problem at all, my copies always show up. I feel really silly because I've just gone to All Photos and there are all my virtual copies. Do you know why they wouldn't show in the collection? And when I pop back and forth in collections/all photos, I lose my place. Is there a way to come back to the same place?
    Thank you very much.

  • Virtual Copies Not Working for Me

    Hello,
I've installed Lightroom 1.0 and so far love it. But, I do have one issue. I cannot seem to create Virtual Copies.
I select a photo in the Library grid, right-click it (I'm running Windows XP) and select "Create Virtual Copy."
The grid's view remains the same (no new 'copy' of the picture with the little earmark appears) and on the Film Strip, I see a new gray box at the end of the strip, but no picture is in the gray box. If I click the gray box, nothing happens.
If I try to create another virtual copy (of same photo or a different photo) the same behavior happens again (no change to the grid, and yet another gray empty placeholder where a new photo should appear).
Am I creating virtual copies incorrectly? Is anyone else having this issue? I see nothing in knowledge base or Support DB about this.
    Thanks,
    Rodney

    Hi!
Hmm, I played around a bit; this bug seems to have something to do with the Collection depth or wheter they were created with beta 4.1 or anything?!
    My steps:
    - I built a collection "Jockulator" in beta 4.1, created around 10 child collections with depth three.
    - With LR 1.0 I created "Jockulator / Zoo / H". When adding photos to this Collection, I do not see the virtual copies, like said above.
    - When I click "Jockulator / Zoo", same problem
    - When I click "Jockulator" (with 102 photos), I DO SEE the virtual copies!!
    - I have created then another collection with the same child depth, I have added photos and virtual copies to all dephts, aaaaand: it works.... in tears of joy or so I tried more ;-)
    - Some of the names of the "Jockulator" child collections had chars like " " and ":" in it which I remember to be difficult to handle sometimes. I tried renaming them, but the bug stays present.
    - Then I made a new child "Jockulator / 1-Zoo" (which is the first child alphabetically) and a child "H-85mm", and there....... it works!!!!
So I don't know what the real bug is, but at least I know that it is not a immanent bug on my system, but that I can workaround it ... somehow...

  • Virtual Copies, Stacking & Sort by File Name

    The scenario is as follows...
I create a Virtual Copy of an image (Original & VC automatically stacked)
The file is sorted based on the File Name of the Original file.
I now move the Virtual Copy to the top of the stack.
The file has been moved to the very beginning of the sort list!!!???
Sort by File Name no longer works as expected even though the VC and the Original have the same file name.
This behaviour is the same whether the stack is collapsed or expanded.
File returns to correctly ordered sort position when Original is moved back to the top of the stack.
Does anybody have an explanation for this?

  • Virtual copies and DNG files

I may have completely misunderstood something, but I thought the metadata in a DNG file was contained within the file. The virtual copy function in LR1 is very interesting for making different versions of the same image, but if the image metadata for the virtual copies is in XMP files, does this preclude the use of this function with DNG files?
    Martin

Thanks. So the XMP metadata block in a DNG file will just contain any non-destrictive edits made on the original file. The information about any edits in virtual copies are then in accompanying files (XML?). Or is this information only contained within the Lightroom database?
I am just trying to understand how the information is stored and if it is accessible to other applications.

  • Virtual copies exported in Win7 appear to lose edits

When I export virtual copies IN LR5, all seems well.  The Library Grid view shows the new copies of the original image with the various changes I have made in Develop.  This is also true for the brief folder view that LR5 pops up at the end of the export.  But, when I later view the same folder with the Win7 Computer utility, or any other editor, these files all appear the same as the original!  No changes evident.  So it appears that I have missed some step in the export process to "fix" the changes in the virtual copies to the new files?
    Kelly Cook

I know they should be different after export.  I expected them to be different.  Could the original file type be an issue?  My original was a JPG, not RAW.  The Library mode let me create virtual copies, the same a using a RAW file.  And, Develop let me make all the usual adjustments to the virtural copies, same as if they had been RAW.  Export did not put up any warning flags either, appeared to function normally, even though I was exporting JPG virtual copy to JPG.  I did use unique filenames (appended the Copy text) for each of the exports, so there should not be any confusion there.  Is some extra step needed to export a JPG virtual copy to JPG?  Or is this an undocumented issue?

  • Virtual copies naming issue

When I created a virtual copy of an image in LR3, and then I renamed the images, the virtual copies would have the new name with a hyphen.
i.e if there were two virtual copies associate with the file, the renamed sequence would be as follows jcp0001, jcp0001-1(vc), jcp0001-2(vc), jcp0004
This had the advantage of keeping my file numbers in sync when I uploaded them to my online lab (Pictage) and the client gave me a file name.
In LR4 renaming sequencing doesn't take into account the virtual copies in terms of the chronological # and compensating for the vcs. So the same sequence would be jcp0001, jcp0001-copy(vc), jcp0001-copy2(vc), jcp0002
This has the affect of misaligning my files with those of the online host. I have searched for how to adjust this, but cannot find a solution.
    Anyone know of one?
    Many thanks in advance!
    Justine

The copy names are included in the exported filenames, but the way they are named by LR has changed from LR3 to LR4. The numbered sequence no longer "counts" the virtual copies as taking up a chronological number space. I know it's really confusing to explain!
But think of it this way, LR now counts the first master file as 0001, and the next master file as 0002, but there are 2 virtual copies of 0001. So when I export them, master file 0002 is really the 4th file in the list, and then I have a discrepancy between my hard drive files and the ones online the client is seeing (they see it as image 0004, when it's really file 0002). Does that make the problem clearer?
    Thanks,
    Justine

  • Virtual copies are not synchronized in a second Lightroom catalogue although metadata are written in XMP and synchronization with metadata was selected

    Dear community,
I operate one Mac with Lightroom 5.7 that is configured to store all metadata in xmp files. The Lightroom catalogue is stored locally on the Mac and only contains references to the images and their xmp files that are stored on a network device. There is another Mac with the same configuration having a separate local Lightroom catalogue and access to the same images on the network device.
At a starting point, both Lightroom catalogues are identical - they refer to the same images on the network device and contain the same metadata.
When I update image properties on the first Mac, these changes are reflected in the xmp file. After using the option "synchronize" with activated "metadata synchronization" on the second Mac, the modified image properties are visible on the second Mac. This is fine.
However, when I create a virtual copy on the first Mac, I realize that the corresponding xmp file gets updated. However, even after synchronization, the virtual copy is not visible on the second Mac. I may modify image properties of the original image and get these modifications replicated to the second Mac, but the virtual copies remain on the first Mac.
What needs to be done that also virtual copies get synchronized?
Thank you very mich for your support.
    Best regards,
    Peter

I do not doubt that File Export / File Import will work to transfer the virtual copies.
My question was related to the fact whether the imported folder should not previously exist on the second Mac.
    Consider the following situation:
    time = 0:
first Mac: folder A is in a first status
second Mac: folder A is in a first status
    time = 1:
first Mac: folder A is in a second status, export folder A in second status
second Mac: folder A is in a first status, import folder A in second status
My question is: What happens with these two folder A on the second Mac? Does folder A in the Lightroom catalogue of the second Mac gets overwritten? Do I receive an error message because folder A is already present in the Lightroom catalogue?
I understand your answer that everything will be fine on the second Mac if there is no folder A at all at the second Mac while I import the new folder A. Under this assumption, I can import folder A and it will show the second status. Clearly.
My question is only related to the fact that there is already a folder A on the second Mac, with the same images, but with different metadata and/or virtual copies.

  • Can not find virtual copies in Windows folder.

I can not remember to have encountered this before, so here I go: I just created a virtual copy of some photos from my summer holiday, and all works well. But when I needed to access these photos going the Windows' way (Windows/My Pictures that is), the virtual copies do not appear in my YYYYMM folder. Going back to LR though, they will appear there with a /Copy 1 extension. RIghtclicking the VC, then "Show in Explorer" will highlight the original in the folder, the VC still not being there. Part of the frustration is that I can not remember this happening before (or maybe it has), so I'm wondering if I by accident have changed any settings.
    Running LR 4.1 on Windows 7 64-bit.
    Thanks in advance.

My only point, was an observation that there is very little actual practical difference between a virtual copy and a "master" ANYWAY.
So you have 1 master (an actual raw) and 10 VC’s. What happens to the VC’s if the master gets corrupted?
If your master has say Adobe Standard as the DNG Profile but the VC has a custom DNG profile, what happens to the VC if that profie goes missing or gets corrupted? Try it.
If by "master", you mean the Raw file on disk, then if that is corrupted (something I have never yet experienced IIRC; although I still backup against this possibility) then certainly, all images derived from that will suffer. However adding VCs does not increase the absolute risk of that. The way I was using "master", was to refer to the one LR metadata set which, unlike a VC metadata set, currently asserts a functional link to the source file. If that LR metadata set were to get corrupted, (something I have never yet experienced either IIRC, although I still backup against that possibility too) then I might be glad of a VC which I could immediately promote to that role and status instead.
Certainly bad things may happen to a VC if a required external file is lost or changed - but these are exactly the same bad things, as if the exact same events had happened for the "master" version alongside. I do take the point that there is protection in redundancy - no question - and also that instantly written-out metadata is a useful separate backup of one's work (as I mentioned, I'd be glad if VCs could get the same thing too somehow, someday).
One-to-many dependency on a single source file can make some good things happen too, though, which may be judged worth any potential added risks. Say deliberate changes are newly made to a Photoshop edit on which several LR image versions are based. These updates will ripple through all virtual versions automatically; whereas if these versions had instead been fully independent, the same changes would need to be made repeatedly to get the same result; assuming one wants all these versions to reflect the changes; which is (should be; needs to be) the realistic expectation, when one has opted to use a cluster of VCs in the first place.

  • How to make copies/duplicates of photos in LR4 - NOT Virtual Copies

Can someone tell me if there is a SIMPLE way to make a copy or duplicate of a photo in LR4. In otherwords, you have a photo image in one folder and you want to make a copy and move it to another folder or subfolder and that copy is identical in EVERY aspect to the original photo and can be edited, manipulated, etc. without affecting the original. I can find nothing on this subject - all I keep getting is this VIRTUAL COPY which is NOT like the original and cannot be moved without the original (Master) going along with it. What's the problem? Every image program I know of can do this. BTW this in on a Mac Lion (10.8.4). Thank you, Brad

Or same (or different) location, and do rename.
I do this regularly, but only for testing purposes. Note: Some people don't want to use virtual copies, because they are handled as "2nd class citizens" by Lightroom (e.g. not saved in xmp, and must tag along with master base copy...).
That said, I agree that care should be taken when having multiple (real) copies of same file, especially if they have the same filename (which I don't recommend, unless you really know what you are doing, and why...).

  • Virtual Copies come first in exported files?

Is there a good reason why virtual copies, which come after the original file in the Library, are named in a way that causes them to come before in the exported set of jpegs?  IE - ogfile.jpg and ogfile-2.jpg.  When sorted by filename, the virtual copy is first!  This totally counterintuitive.  The original files should get a -1 suffix or the virtual copy should be named sequentially.  Or am I missing something?

I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this!
I suppose I should add that I generally have a manually ordered final set of files - edited, complete with virtual copies, ordered, and, as a last step, batch renamed in the Library (Custom_Name + #Sequence), to take on the new order.  In this case, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the exported set to be identical to the Library arrangement.  After all, I do take care in putting everything in a consistent, coherent order, so my clients can make sense of their (gigantic) image sets.
So my options to acheive this are as follows 1) add a -1 to everything (huge sets with hundreds if not 1,000+ images)  2) manually add a -1 to the original file, requiring changing (and changing back!) the custom rename settings, or renaming from Bridge and syncronizing 3) manually rearrange the exported jpegs, batch rename (again!).
Or, alternatively, Lr could 1) rename the files in such a way during the batch rename in the Library, that will hold their order after export (ie treat the VC as a unique file, at least for renaming purposes) 2) add the -x suffixes so the files hold their order after export.
Lr could do this intelligently, seamlessly, and without user intervention.  And it should!
Thanks again for not ignoring me!

  • Virtual Copies did not import with images

I imported a large group of images from last October and 14 of them had virtual copies created from them, mainly the final copies of images I was using. When imported into a new catalog I created in Lightroom 4 beta, only the raw files came over, not the virtual copies. I do notice that they have all been updated to the 2012 process and I did not tell it to do that. Could this be the problem and do I need to remove and reimport them? This could be a big problem for me as I really like to use Virtual Copies. Thanks for your help.

Virtual copies are kept only in the Catalogue. They won't be in the xmp data of the master files. They will, however be in the converted catalogue that you'll get when you start using the release version of LR4.
The other problem (all 2012 process version) seems like it was probably caused by your not writing out the metadata into your master files while they were part of your LR3 catalogue. You might need to do that in LR3 and re-import in LR4.
Note: it's a bad idea to use the same master files in each catalogue. Make copies and import those in LR4. Much safer.

  • Firefox when saving a "complete html" file is downloading a folder and "2" copies of the html file not one. One of these has the same name but "0" kb content

Hi. The only save options for a full html type file on Firefox is as "web page, complete" and as I say when saving with Firefox the program is saving the usual yellow folder with links and artwork files etc, but is saving 2 copies of the HTML file where on of these files is empty, won't open and gets locked to the destination it was saved to. This empty file can't be moved, and can't be deleted. When this is attempted it gives message "cannot delete (or "move" if this is the case) : Cannot read from the source file or disc."
To overcome this I now use Internet Explorer, dut prefer not to. I have also deleted Firefox from my system and re-installed it, but this did not help. How can I stop this doubling of saved files? and how can I delete the ones that are now fixed to my desktop? can you lease help?

The programme written in 6.1 was designed to write data into file but i have installed labview 7.0 now and the same programme is not writing to file.

    Hi,
    Here is the detailed information.
I am running this Labview VI for collecting data through a network analyser and controlling motion of motors through DAQ card. I have already run the cd of drivers given with Labview 7.0
The exact subvi used for writing file is the hp8720 collect data. This thing has been installed in the Laptop with version 6.1 of Labview. What I have done is that I have taken the same programme and changed its algorithm in Labview 7.0 on a different comp and copied the file back. Then I installed labview 7.0 on the Laptop and tried running the new programme. But everything is working except the writing to file. Error handling has been put up and the message I get is Error reading/writing from/to file. Check file name.
