Virtual Copies - Unable to add to collections

Virtual copies will not appear in either quick collections or created collections when added although the library panel (for quick collection) or collections panel indicates an image has been added. Anyone notice the problem?

I'm having the same issues.
I select a photo in the Library's grid view, right-click it (I'm running Windows XP) and select "Create Virtual Copy."
The grid's view remains the same (no new 'copy' of the picture with the little earmark appears) and on the Film Strip, I see a new gray box at the end of the strip, but no picture is in the gray box. If I click the gray box, nothing happens.
If I try to create another virtual copy (of same photo or a different photo) the same behavior happens again (no change to the grid, and yet another gray empty placeholder where a new photo should appear).
Am I creating virtual copies incorrectly???

  • Find and export Virtual Copies: Easy to add and ( i would argue) Necessary

I haven't found an easy way to go back and easily select all virtual copies in a library in order to export them.
A virtual copy is easy to miss and sometimes its hard to remember where you made changes in a large collection.
There needs to be a search option for file types in LightRoom that can find the virtual copies and allow them to be collectively exported as real copies.
If not a search function, then please simply insert a "save all virtual copies" option in the export area. Perhaps it could have the option to export all to their respective original file's folder OR to a designated edits folder with some tag to refer to the original location.
I would very much appreciate an official adobe contact if at all possible :-/

You can filter out Virtual Copies using a button on the filter bar located in the bottom right corner of the Lr application window (just above the filmstrip). Click a folder (folder panel) to narrow the filter to a specific folder or subfolders or the top most folder to show all virtual copies. You'll also find the second button will show only Master photos.

  • Virtual copies and smart collections

    Previous answer not satisfactory.
Are virtual copies considered by LR to be the same image. Then why have them. They are different especially after I add more processing.
Therefore when i make a smart collection of aspect = square and rating is 3
all versions should show up. Not the way it seems to work   LR5.7 on Mac 10.9
Then I sort at top for 2014 and select to go into a regular collection Best squares of 2014.
As it works now it is useless because I have to rely on memory to know I made a different version based on a virtual copy.
I consider this a bug... Again read my other post today.
If all you can do in collection is just the easy filters what is the point. I can do it manually.
If this take rocket scientist to code an algorithm to figure out virtual copies are different than originals then get them on it ASAP.
This is what gets me. If you know they don't work put it right out front on the help page what IT DOESN"T DO. BE HONEST
YOU are getting paid for that. Why should a customer have to waste his time when feature is obviously deficient.

Disclaimer: I have no idea what you're talking about, nor did I read your other post today. That said, here are a couple of points which may be pertinent:
    * Virtual copies are 100% different photos (in the catalog database, in collections, etc..).
    * Internally, the main difference between a virtual copy and a real copy is that the virtual copy omits the associated file and records the associated (master) photo instead.
PS - I recommend understanding how it works before jumping to conclusions about how it doesn't..
Note: be aware that there are master-photo/virtual-copy attribute filters in the library module (which remain active in develop module..).

  • Deleting Virtual Copies From Library, Burning Collections & Part of Library

Hello! I am new to this software; I have LR 2.0
From the library, I selected/highlighted the photos that I wanted to put into a new collection, then clicked the plus symbol above "Collections." I was then asked if, when putting the selected photos into that collection, I wanted to make a virtual copy in the library. I wasn't exactly sure what this meant, so I checked the box. Now, obviously, I have duplicates of all of my selected photos in my library. My collections folder turned out just how I wanted. However, I would prefer not to have a cluttered library. Is there a way to delete the virtual copies without removing them from my collection?
Also, I plan on burning a disc for a client. I want to include the entire photoshoot (what's in the library) but I would also like to have a sub-folder on the CDROM of my selected favorites/best (which remain in the collection.) How can I do this? Do I export the collection folder separately?
    Thank you!

  • Published virtual copies show up in Grid View of Collection

I'm a bit frustrated at something that has only recently begun happening to me.  I am using Lightroom 3.  I'll have a collection that I will publish to flickr.  when I do, I later look at the collection and it'll not only show my photos, but also a virtual copy that is published to flickr.  I don't want that.  It's not necessary to see and I didn't have to see them before.  If I want to see what is published, I can go to the published collection and look.  On my local collection, I don't want to see virtual copies unless they were virtual copies that I purposely made for some reason.  I don't want Lighroom to be automatically creating a duplicate of every image that I publish to flickr.

The screenshot was very helpful.  The problem is with the Custom 05 custom metadata field.  Which plugin defined that?
It appears that smart collections don't properly search the custom metadata fields of virtual copies.    I filed a bug report in the official Adobe feedback forum: Lightroom: Smart collections don't correctly search custom metadata fields.
You could work around this by using a filter preset in the Library Filter bar.  Perhaps not as convenient, but it would get the job done.

  • Finding Virtual Copies in Smart Collections

Is there any way to find virtual copies in smart collections without using "copy name is not empty" ? Basically I am trying to use copy name as a version number for all images, include the base image which is the original. But this then makes it difficult to find the actual copies themselves. Any ideas?
    Thanks

I'll see whether a smart collection can work from a saved filter, which can identify the real VCs correctly.
Not sure what this means, but if you want "Is Virtual Copy" metadata available for (standard Lr native) smart collections, it is available via
    Metadata Extensions
The only caveat is that the metadata is not updated immediately, so you need to "manage" the metadata updating and/or your expectations.
Funny - I just ran into the need for this last night - I solved by making sure all virtual copy names were distinguishable from master copy names, still: because of Lightroom's text metadata processing shortcomings (e.g. space handling and "Big Mallard Ducks" bug), It really is best to have a yes/no rule.

  • Virtual Copies And Collections Issue

I created a few virtual copies for the purpose of having B&W versions of images. Then I added a new collection named B+W and added these virtual copies to the collection. The counter for the collection incremented correctly but when I selected the collection, none of the virtual copies appeared there even thought they were counted in the collection.
Any one else experience this or can corroborate that this is a bug?
    Jim

Similar problem, Jim. I asked about it twice in this self-inflicted thread:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc36332/0
Got no response. Which is one reason I mentioned in the "Split This Forum?" thread that I'd be grateful for a stepped-up Adobe presence in the U-to-U. Because for all their generosity of time and spirit, even the most helpful users sometimes don't know the answer, and having somebody like George or Jeff jump in a say, "It's a bug; we're working on it," would save precious time.

  • Virtual Copies search and export...

    Hi,
The underscores I'm using in my filenames seems to be messing up the sort order. So I want to replace the underscores with dashes. LR can't do this in its rename utility, afaik. If I do this externally, then I need to re-associate the images in LR's database with the files on the disk. I have about 5000, so don't want to do this on a file-by-file basis. However, if I remove all the images from the LR database and re-import everything, I'll lose the virtual copies, won't I? (I can export the metadata and keywords to sidecar files, so won't lose them.)
So here's my first question: Is there a way to export the data for a virtual file to an associated sidecar file that LR can later read back in? My other thought is to convert all the virtual copies to tiff files (eat a lot space that way). Either way, I need to find all my virtual copies. So my last question is: Is there a way to search for, or filter on, just virtual copies in LR?
    Thanks,
    Michael

re virtual copies, the answer is No is 1.0 but Adobe understand the problem and I'm hopeful you'll see a method before long. For now, you have to do something immediately after VC creation - add to a collection, mark the IPTC instructions, or add an appropriate keyword.
The sort order shouldn't be messed up by underscores. I assume they are in a consistent position in the filename - I use yymmdd_012345 quicl description.ext. Are you sure you are sorting by filename - see the toolbar (T) in Library.

  • Retaining Virtual Copies

Something Sean McCormack wrote about losing data, made me wonder why can't LR save virtual copies.
If LR could write a VC xmp file to go alongside the main XMP file or better if LR could write the VC data into the main XMP file, then the problem of losing VCs if one need to rebuild catalogues would be solved.
If one could also save collections data as a text file to reimport in case of catalogue failure/corruption/back up problems, that would be good too.
In fact a single export button for all prefences, setttings, presets, collections, keywords would be great.
[For all your products in fact as it's such a time consuming task to redo all one's personal settings and tweaks. PS lost them all the other day, for no reason that I can think of. Don't recall PS crashing or anything.]
Even if you carefully back up your LR catalogue, you are stuffed if what is backed up is also damaged. I have some corrupted images, also backed up to two other places, but all the back ups are also damaged too as the original files were damaged by 'disk error/bad cable connection'. I only discovered this a couple of years after the files were last accessed and needed to use them again. So even if one did back ups where you gradually replaced the data, you'd only find out too late. Ironically you are more likely to caught out by this if you back more often.

Have you tried extracting the page (Tools > Pages > Extract) and then inserting it (Tools > Pages > Insert from File)?
It would also be possible to do with a script that makes the page a template, spawns it as a new page, and then deletes the template. This could be made into a custom menu item or toolbar button if you need to do this sort of thing a lot.
Here's some code that will add a duplicate page of the one that's currently being viewed just after it:
    // Duplicate the current page
    createTemplate("t1", pageNum).spawn({nPage: pageNum + 1, bOverlay: false});
    removeTemplate("t1");
This code can be run from the interactive JavaScript console (Ctrl+J) by selecting all of the lines and hitting Ctrl+Enter, or Enter on the numeric keypad.

  • Virtual copies are invisible to me in LR 4.3

When I create virtual copies, the total number of instances of the image goes up but I don't see any of the virtual images. I unstack and it shows they're unstacked and "1 of 2" but I still can't see the other. I've turned off all filters and still nothing.
It was happening in 4.3rc and is still happening in 4.3. It is only present in certain catalogs.

    jasonjmp2 wrote:
I would have thought that when you are in the Libary in a collection and you make a virtual copy, LR would automatically add the copy to the collection that contains it's Master.
Yes, that is the expected procedure. The VC should be added to the collection automatically if it is created while working in the collection. And I never had a problem with this.
For all of you who have problems with VCs not showing where they are expected:
This could be due to a corrupt Preference File. This file can go "funny" and is then responsible for all kinds of strange behavior of Lr. The remedy is replacing the Preference File.

  • Virtual Copies - I'm not sure I understand what they do for me.

I'm trying to use collections and virtual copies. What good do they do, if I can't crop each virtual copy to a different size?
I'm using the original raw file to create the new collection and virtual copy. I assumed that the flexibility of this tool was to enable me to "finish" images in different ways.
I'd thought that I could crop abc.nef to both 5x7 and 8x10. Add them to their respective collection and then export that collection for the finish work in Photoshop. This doesn't seem to be the case.
Am I expecting something that isn't in the product?
    Thanks!
    Kittie

That is more or less what I did. One Raw, two VCs. Raw untouched, Each VC with a different crop and each with a different develop preset. All remained different on Export.
If a VC is made of a VC it will copy the settings of that VC. If you want to change the setting sof this VC (of a VC) you need to rest it first, so it is like the original raw.

  • How do i allocate more memory to my iphoto application? i am unable to add more photos to my library  i keep getting a pop up saying not enough memory in my application

how do i allocate more memory from my hd to my iphoto application? i have over 80 gb on my hard drive, but only 1.7 gb allocated to my iphoto application & i am unable to add more photos to my library.  i keep getting a popup that says not enough application memory.

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
These instructions are for OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks.") The procedure may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, remove the software. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the  leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • Are Virtual Copies saved in Backups? How do I insert a backup into an existing catalog?

Are Virtual Copies saved in Backups? How do I insert a backup into an existing catalog
I deleted a tif image file that I didn't intend to, which had several LR virtual copies created from it. The virtual copies had a lot of important history that document my print preparation edits. Are these virtual copies saved in the LR backups?
If so, how can I insert them into the catalog I am using? I have made a lot of edits in the two days since my last backup and don't want to lose that history either. Do you suggest I make a current backup before retrieving files from my last backup? I know I'm supposed to go to the backup location and open the last backup, but how do I blend that with the current work from the last 2 days?
Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks, Tom

    Rob,
That was exactly what I was after. However, I'm still having trouble getting the virtual copies imported. The master file was in my trash, I restored it to the original hard drive folder. Before I got your message I re- imported it to LR but of course LR came up with a new name since I was importing from and saving it to the same folder in LR. And of course no copies. This may have been a mistake, but before starting the procedure you described, I re-named the master file (it seemed that the import from backup would re-create it so I didn't want  a conflict).
Then I did what you said and used the 'Import From Another Catalog' feature. I found the virtual copies in the backup and checked them. But when the import completed, the it gave me file names  xxx/Copy1, xxx/Copy2 but there was no image or history or metadata. When I tried to find the folder containing the files, it said it couldn't be found. So I missed something in the settings. When I tried again, there was a warning saying the file(s) exists in the catalog and its settings differ. I went ahead anyway and the message I got was "No Photos in previous import"
Here's what the import from backup shows:
A box with catalog contents and all the folders and files within them, that you can check.
A New Photos section, which gives 2 file handling choices: a)add new photos to the catalog without moving them or b) don't import new photos
A Changed existing photos section with 2 replace options: a) nothing or b) Metadata and develop setting only. If you choose this you can check a box to preserve old settings as a virtual copy.
Not sure what to do. I changed the master file back to its original name, but that didn't make a difference. Suggestions? Thanks, Tom
