Virtual directories on second exchange server

On my first Exchange install I changed all the virtual directory's to point to mail.domain.com.  I've added a second exchange server to another site and have round robin dns including the host name in the A record "mail".  Would I also
change the virtual directories on the second server to mail.domain.com?

Hi
You can create a DAG if the servers are on the same OS and same version.
You can then install your certificate that has the name mail.domain.com and change your urls to match the first server.
You need to update DNS with a A record if you using Round Robin so that mail.domain.com points to server A but also server B, so in short you will have 2 records with the same name but pointing to different servers.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

  • Installing second Exchange server 2010 with all roles (CAS, HT and MB) in the same domain?!

    Dear all,
first of all thanks for reading this topic :-)
In our enviroment, we have a Exchange 2010 server (Version: 14.01.0438.000), whitch is installed with all server roles (CAS, HT and MB) on one server(OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise). This exchange server sends all external mails to a smarthost (Redddox).
We are using Outlook Anywhere, Active Sync and OWA.
Now, we need to migrate this Exchange server to another one, because we think, that the server´s OS is corrupt and also, there are wrong licenses installed. The "new" server will have the same OS Version and Exchange Version (2010).
Currently I´m a little afraid, to install a new one - because I think when I will install the CAS and HT role, something will happen in my productive enviroment (Autodiscover, SMTP Connectors, Cerficates a.s.o.).
To install the mailbox role, I think this will not affect anything.
Can you help me a little bit in what to take care of? Do I need to preconfigure something, before I will install the second exchange? What about the version / service pack of Exchange to install? Must it be the same as installed on the first one?
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Jennie

    Hi Jennie,
Below are the steps if you are not planning to upgrade.
    1) Install new Exchange2010-SP3 Server all roles Please check
    this
    2) Install the certificate in the new server by requesting a duplicate from the 3rdparty CA. Or export from the existing Exchange 2010 and import to the new one. Please check
    this
    3) Set your autodoscover, OAB, ECP, OWA URLs same as the current Exchange. Below artciles will help you to do that.
For OAB, Autodiscover, EWS please check steps 5,6,7in this
For setting OWA and ECP URLs please check
    this.
    4) Move few mailboxes as a test and check. If no errors move the rest.
    5) Move your OAB generation server to the new server. Please check
    this
    6) Move you public folder contents to the new server you have. Please check
    this
    7) Configure your firerwall to receive emails on the new server and other services like EWS, OWA, ActiveSync.
    8)
Add the new server as the source server and in the current send connector and remove the old server from the send connector.
Shutdown the server for a couple of days and monitor. So you will know if you missed something.
Uninstall Exchange2010 from the add remove programs.
    Thanks, MAS

  • Second Exchange 2013 server in remote site

Just finished migrating from 2007 to 2013 and decommissioned 2007.  Exchange 2013 is running in site A with 350 mailboxes on it.  However, almost half of those users reside in site B so the plan is to introduce a second Exchange 2013 server to
this site and migrating mailboxes to it.  There already exists a DC & GC in both sites.
My question is, immediately after I introduce Exchange 2013 into site B with CAS & MBX role, client computers from that site will start to receive certificate errors.  Will updating the SCP on the new exchange server to point to the SCP on the exchange
server in site A be enough to mitigate that problem?  What other precautions will I need to take?  Has anybody been down this road?

    Hi
You can introduce the second exchange server in the remote site and also setup a DAG. If you are using the same name on your certificate like mail.domain.com then you can use the cert for your second server as well. You need to make sure you have autodiscover
    records setup correctly.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

  • More than one Exchange server on a domain @ different locations

Hello,  I'm looking for advice, best practices,  on setting up a backup exchange server.  I currently have one Exchange 2010 server that everyone connects to.  We have about 30 users spread out between 8 locations. We have a mix of bandwidth
capabilities. A couple of us have fiber, we have a couple of sites with t1's, and the rest have business class cable or dsl.  All the sites are connected by IPsec tunnels. We're all part of a single domain and some of the sites have a local domain controllers.
What I would like to do is add a second exchange server, at a different site, so that if something happens to the primary server like a fire, power loss, comet :) the other server could take it's place and users could get their email without noticing much
of a difference. Or maybe having them both up at the same time and assigning some users to one server and the balance to the other, and if one went down everyone would still be able to use the server that is working.  Any idea's?
If it matters I do have Exchange 2013 licenses. I haven't upgraded yet, but it on the to do list.

    Hi Profector,
    Great information from Ed.
DAG is a great method to configure a DR site for backup.
I find an article on "Database Availability Group Design Examples" for your reference:

  • Exchange server 2013 - Setting up DAG

    Hi Guys,
I have an Exchange 2013 server(a single dedicated box with all the roles(MailBox and  Client Access) configured in it. Now I want to enable data redundancy and Failover. So, I want to setup a DAG and my idea is given below.
I Want to setup a 2 node DAG. The first node is my current working box and the second node is another box at a different location. I would then Install Exchange on the 2nd node with mailbox role on it. As it is a 2 node DAG, I would require another box as
    a witness server.
Please let me know if there is any flaws with the above setup. Also, let me know if I require a different Exchange server license for the second installation.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Nash Burns

    Hi,
From the article blow, we know a license must be assigned for each instance of the server software that is being run. The second Exchange server need a license.
    Exchange Server 2013 licensing
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/microsoft-exchange-server-licensing-licensing-overview-FX103746915.aspx
And the type of license is based on the number of mailbox databases.
Standard: designed for the mailbox needs of small to midsize organizations. Also appropriate for non-mailbox roles in a larger Exchange deployment. This edition supports 1 to 5 mailbox databases.
Enterprise: designed for larger organizations that may require a greater number of mailbox databases. This edition supports 1 to 100 mailbox databases.

    Many thanks,

    Hi Andrey,
Exchange Web Service in Exchange server configuration is working for all users in your Exchange environment, not just for one specific user. If you want to double make sure the EWS service in client side, we can directly access the EWS URL in IE of your
Windows machine, and see whether a proper XML file is returned. If so, then we can safely ignore the web service test result.
As for automatic signature application, do you mean
Add a signature automatically to every message? Please try to remove the signature and reset it again to check whether the issue persists.

  • Exchange BPA Errors (Exchange server is a virtual machine but the additional tools are not installed and The 'Services' string type value located in 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ExchangeServer\v14\Setup\Services' registry key is missing)

    Hi,
I am running BPA on My Exchange 2010 VM (Server 2008 R2 VM on Hyper-V) and get the following errors:
The 'Services' string type value located in 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ExchangeServer\v14\Setup\Services' registry key is missing or inaccessible. The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service won't start. As a result, all services that depend
on this service won't be able to start
Exchange server [Exchange Server FQDN] is a virtual machine but the additional tools are not installed. This configuration is not supported. Install Virtual Machine Additions for this guest.
Problem is that, for the first, that Key exists and the service is actually running fine. And for the second my VM tools are already installed.
Hopefully someone out there has had the same issue and can assist.
    Pete

    Hi Pete,
For the first error message, please try the following steps:
Make sure the Information Store service is in Starting status,
Automatic startup type and works well, as a test we can try to
restart the Infroamtion Store service and verify the service works well.
    Start
Registry Editor, find the registry key “Services” under “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ExchangeServer\v14\Setup”, its value is “C:\Program
files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\v14”(default install location), please check your registry, make sure the key “Services” exist and value is the Exchange Server install location and the
    location is accessible;
    Start
Registry Editor, and locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Setup
    Use the
Permission option under the Security tab to check the permission setting on this key. Make sure
System is in the list with Full Control permissions if the service account is Local System. If you are not using Local System as the service account, check the existence of the corresponding account in the list and ensure that
it has Full Control permissions. Please refer to this article:
Title: Exchange Store Does Not Start: Errors 7024, 1026, 9542, and 5000
    Link:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/285116
    Start
ADSI Edit, and then browse to the following location:
    Domain.com/Configuration/Services/Microsoft Exchange/Org/Administrative Groups/AdminGroup/Servers/Server Name
    Right-click the
server name, and then click Properties.
    Click the
Security tab, make sure this own server’s server object have
full control permission on its own server.
If not or the object is missing, please modify the permission or click
Add, locate the computer account for the Exchange Server computer, add it to the Permissions list with full control.
Click OK, and then close ADSI Edit.
    Use
Active Directory Users and Computers to add the current affected
Exchange Server computer account to the Exchange Servers(previous version should be “Exchange Domain Servers”) group in the
Microsoft Exchange Security Groups( or Users) OU. Refer to this article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297295.
Restart the Exchange Server computer, then rerun the ExBPA.
For the second error message, Microsoft don’t recommend to install Exchange Server on virtual machine without additional tools, so the error message occurs. We can just ignore
this message, it will not affect the Exchange servers.

  • Exchange 2007 to 2013 virtual directories

  • Exchange Server Virtual Machine Move

    Hi team,
Here's my focus area. There's an Exchange Server 2010 (Hub/CAS/MBX) in a virtual instance(Hyper-V 2k8 R2). Everything is running smoothly, except the engineer who deployed it had taken a snapshot after 2 months of use which is dated in 2012. Since then no
back-up has been taken and is running without an issue.
Now, they want to move all the virtual machines into a NEW physical server. All the other VM's are to be Exported and Imported. However, with Exchange 2010, I want to know if the Export > Import theory will work.
    My concerns are;
Is the snapshot taken in 2012 going to be an issue when Exporting and Importing?
Since both Active Directory and Exchange are virtualized, will exporting these two make any issues?
What would be my best option if Export > Import is not going to work?
As the last place of resort, I'm thinking of adding a ADC, make it Primary. Then add a secondary Exchange Server, Move mailboxes, Calendar, connectors n then, demote the second one. But it's going to be a lengthy task.
    Thank You.
    Chris!

I wouldn't use snapshot for Exchange 2010 (and thus Active Directory) as those are point in time restore which will bring you back to the time when it was taking and will lose the data or all updates since then...
Besides snapshot is not supported in Exchange 2010 as mentioned here... http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj126252(v=exchg.141).aspx
Some hypervisors include features for taking snapshots of virtual machines. Virtual machine snapshots capture the state of a virtual machine while it's running. This feature enables you to take multiple snapshots of a virtual machine and then revert
the virtual machine to any of the previous states by applying a snapshot to the virtual machine. However, virtual machine snapshots aren't application aware, and using them can have unintended and unexpected consequences for a server application that maintains
state data, such as Exchange. As a result, making virtual machine snapshots of an Exchange guest virtual machine isn't supported.
Install Exchange on physical server and move mailbox, connector and all other services from Virtual to Physical and then uninstall Exchange from Virtual server properly. I know it is lengthy process but gives you peace of mind as no data or change lose...

  • Creation of a second Exchange 2013 server on a different site (with the roles of MBX and CAS) fails on prepare active directory and prepare schema.

    Hello everyone
I have a network infrastructure  consisting of 3 sites, site A, site B, and site C. i have 2 domain controllers on every site, and the AD roles are on the primary domain controller on site A. On site A I have an Exchange 2013sp1 CU6.
I want to create a second Exchange on Site B, with the roles of mailbox (the exchange on Site A will be first DAG member and the Exchange on Site B will be the second member of the DAG) and CAS.
First question: Is my  thought correct about installaing on the same server mailbox and CAS server?
Second question: how many DAG witnesses I need for the DAG? One per site, or one in general (for example located on site A)
Third question: When I am trying to perform “Setup.exe /PrepareSchema /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms”  I receive the error
“ Setup encountered a problem while validating the state of Active Directory:
The Active Directory schema version (15303) is higher than Setup's version (15292). Therefore, PrepareSchema can't be executed.  See the Exchange setup log for more information on this error. For more information, visit:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/library(EXCHG.150)/ms.exch.setupreadiness.AdInitErrorRule.aspx “
I tried  to run the PrepareSchema from  the ISO of Exchange 2013 SP1 and form the extracted content of Exchange 2013SP1 CU6 archive, but still receive the same error. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thank you for your answer,
    I have tried to run "Setup.exe /PrepareSchema /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms”  from
Exchange 2013 CU6 media, but I still receive  the error:

  • How to Properly Protect a Virtualized Exchange Server - Log File Discontinuity When Performing Child Partition Snapshot

I'm having problems backing up a Hyper-V virtualized Exchange 2007 server with DPM 2012. The guest has one VHD for the OS, and two pass-through volumes, one for logs and one for the databases. I have three protection groups:
System State - protects only the system state of the mail server, runs at 4AM every morning
Exchange Databases - protects the Exchange stores, 15 minute syncs with an express full at 6:30PM every day
VM - Protecting the server hosting the Exchange VM. Does an child partition snapshot backup of the Exchange server guest with an express full at 9:30PM every day
The problem I'm experiencing is that every time the VM express full completes I start receiving errors on the Exchange Database synchronizations stating that a log file discontinuity was detected. I did some poking around in the logs on the Exchange server
and sure enough, it looks like the child partition snapshot backup is causing Exchange to truncate the log files even though the logs and databases are on pass-through disks and aren't covered by the child partition snapshot.
What is the correct way to back up an entire virtualized Exchange server, system state, databases, OS drive and all?

I just created a new protection group. I added "Backup Using Child Partition Snapshot\MailServer", short-term protection using disk, and automatically create the replica over the network immediately. This new protection group contains only the child partition
snapshot backup. No Exchange backups of any kind.
The replica creation begins. Soon after, the following events show up in the Application log:

    =================================
The events continue on, basically snapshotting all of Exchange. From the DPM side, the total amount of data transferred tells me that even though Exhange is trunctating its logs, nothing is actually being sent to the DPM server. So this snapshot operation
seems to be superfluous. ~30 minutes later, when my regularly scheduled Exchange job runs, it fails because of a log file discontinuity.
So, in this case at least, a Hyper-V snapshot backup is definitely causing Exchange to truncate the log files. What can I look at to figure out why this is happening?

is there any workaround to solve this issue or do i need to re-install the physical server with 4096 sector size..

    Hi Jared,
I've got a question regarding your answer.
We have an existing Exchange 2010 DAG configuration with 3 mailbox servers in NL and 3 in the UK.
2 for normal databases at each site and 1 for Archive databases at each site.
The current Mailbox servers for the Archive databases are Hyper V 2008 R2 based VM's with a passthrough for storing the databases.
We now want add 1 new Mailbox server for storing archive databases at each site and add them to the DAG.
Can we use Windows 2012 Hyper-V hosts and create the new VM's with 4k sectorsize vhdx files for the new mailbox servers ?
    Regards
