Virtual ip addresses for RDS sessions

I have a Win2k8 R2 Rds server with virtual IP enabled per session.
I created a new dhcp scope for it
But the problem I'm faced with is as follows
when I run an ipconfig on the first session I get 192.168.10.6
And then when I do the same for terminal two (T2) I get 192.168.10.6
192.168.10.7
Ipconfig for terminal session 3 192.168.10.6
192.168.10.7
192.168.10.8
Ipconfig for terminal session 4 192.168.10.6
192.168.10.7
192.168.10.8
192.168.10.9
Ipconfig for terminal session 5 192.168.10.6
192.168.10.7
192.168.10.8
192.168.10.9
192.168.10.10
I thought I was only meant to get two ip addresses? the RDS server's physical address and the virtual ip address.
I've tried setting static ip adddresses and via a registry fix which allows you to specify a start and end of the allocated ip range including a subnetmask.
I've tried the same via a local gpo on the RDS server without avail.
Looking forward to hearing back from everyone. Thanks!!

Thanks for your response.
I can now see the different ip addresses assigned per session id. Is there a way I can get the thin client to display the ip address as per what I'm seeing in Application
and Services Logs/Microsoft/Windows/TerminalServices-TSAppSrv-TSVIP\Admin?
We have a plugin which looks for an rds session id's unique ip address. but due to the multiple ip addresses displaying. The plugin wont work.
is there a way I can get the ipconfig to show only the newly assigned ip address.
Thank you for your response, much appreciated.

  • How can I assign virtual IP address for Pluggable Database on Exadata?

    Hi Guru,
My customer wants the architecture as below. and they want to assign IP address for each pdbs.
Do you have any idea for this? Can I know the step for assigning IP?

    Hi,
thank you for this interesting idea!
Let me ask you to read this document as I refer to some of the concepts described there: Oracle Single Client Access Name (SCAN)
Please let me go into details about assigning IPs to DBs:
In a cluster configuration, IPs (often called VIPs) belong to a "network"
vips can be bound to a host (they will failover in cases of node failure, but will not server an listener) or "float" on all available hosts (SCAN vips)
A VIP can be used by (one or more) listener [let's assume "exactly one listener" to reduce complexity]
with a SERVICE a service_name registers a database to listeners of a network where preferred or available INSTANCES can be defined
Based on these details you can
create one subnet for "Oracle" and another for "Shin" - your given IP definition will not work, i Hope that's not a problem
define SCAN IPs & Listener in each subnet
define VIPs per node/subnet & listeners for each VIP
create a SERVICE "Oracle" for network1 with required instance of Svr #1
create a SERVICE "Shin" for network2 with required instance of Svr #2
This will be quite close to what your customer requests.
but I agree with Salman, before you start that road, please ask for your customers goal.

  • RSAT in Server 2012R2 for RDS Session management

Trying to setup a 2012R2 server, to be able to remotely manage a number of Remote Destop Services servers, particularly to manage the individual sessions of RD users. Apparently this should be able to be done with the Server management tools within 2012R2,
but I cannot find this option anywhere.
Apparently the RSAT are supposed to be already installed, and available through add/remove features, but it does not appear anywhere I can find.
Can someone point me in the correct direction?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Remote Server Administration Tools includes Windows PowerShell cmdlet modules that can be used to manage roles and features that are running on remote servers. Although Windows PowerShell remote management is enabled by default on Windows Server 2012 R2 and
Windows Server 2012, it is not enabled by default on Windows 8.1 or Windows 8. To run cmdlets that are part of Remote Server Administration Tools against a remote server, run Enable-PSRemoting in a Windows PowerShell session that has been opened with elevated
user rights (that is, Run as Administrator) on your Windows client computer after installing Remote Server Administration Tools.
Please check below article might help in your case.

  • Virtual IP Addresses

    Hi Everyone !
My weblogic server listens on a virtual IP address. When the HttpProxyServlet proxies to another weblogic server, it doesn't make the outgoing proxy using the virtual IP address. It uses the the actual IP address assigned to the unix box and not the virtual IP address my weblogic server listens to. This has been confirmed from the firewall logs.
This is important because the firewall requires source IP and destination IP in its rules.
Is there a way to force weblogic server to use the virtual IP address for outgoing calls/requests.
    Thanks,

  • Windows 2012 RDS - Session Host servers High Availability

    Hello Windows/Terminal server Champs,
I am new middle of implementing RDS environment for one of my customer, Hope you could help me out.
My customer has asked for HA for RDS session host where applications are published, and i have prepared below plan for server point of view.
     2 Session Host server, 1 webaccess, 1 License/connection
    Broker & 1 Gateway (DMZ).
In first Phase, we are planning to target internal user
who connect to Session host HA where these 2 servers will have application installed and internal user will use RDP to access these application.
In second Phase we will be dealing with external Party who connect from external network where we are planning to integrate with NetIQ => gateway
    => Webaccess/Session host
I have successfully installed and configured 2 Session
Host, 1 license/Broker. 1 webAccess & 1 Gateway. But my main concern to have session Host High Available as it is hosting the application and most of the internal user going to use it. to configure it i am following http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753891.aspx
However most of the Architecture is change in RDS 2012. can you please help me out to setup the Session Host HA.
Note: we can have only 1 Connection broker /Licensing server , 1 webacess server & 1 Gateway server, we cannot increase more server due to cost
    factor.
     thanks in advance.

Yes, absolutely no problem in just using one connection broker in your environment as long as your customer understands the SPOF.
the session hosts however aren't really what you would class HA - but to set them up so youhave reduancy you would use either Windows NLB, an external NLB device or windows dns round robin. My preferred option when using the connection broker is DNS round
robin - where you give each server in the farm the same farm name dns entry - the connection broker then decides which server to allocate the session too.
You must ensure your session host servers are identical in terms of software though - same software installed in the same paths on all the session host servers.
if you use the 2012 deployment wizard through server manager roles the majority of the config is done for you.

    Hi All,
I have environment that running 2 Exchange 2010 server with CASHT and join windows network load balancing as a node.
    My question is,
If NLB service is restart, is it virtual MAC Address for NLB will change to new virtual MAC Address?
    Thanks for response,
    Best Regards,
    Henry Stefanus

    Hi Henry Stefanus,
The NLB work mechanism will not change whether what higher application we used and I am not very familiar with Exchange NLB architecture, may the following KB and article
    may help you.
When you use the unicast method, all cluster hosts share an identical unicast MAC address. Network Load Balancing overwrites the original MAC address of the cluster adapter
with the unicast MAC address that is assigned to all the cluster hosts.
When you use the multicast method, each cluster host retains the original MAC address of the adapter. In addition to the original MAC address of the adapter, the adapter is
assigned a multicast MAC address, which is shared by all cluster hosts. The incoming client requests are sent to all cluster hosts by using the multicast MAC address.

  • Virtual Host Addressing in Oracle9iAS

    Hi,
We have Oracle9iAS 9.0.2.3 installed on Windows-2000 (SP-4) OS. Both the Instances of Oracle9iAS i.e INFRA & Mid-Tier is installed on the same machine. Our applications developed in Forms/Reports9i is deployed successfully on Mid-Tier and working OK over web with URL:: http://<Host IP>:7779/<app_name>/myprog.html
[HTTP server running on Port 7779, <app_name> is application delployed in our OC4J Instance & myprog.html is first page which opens by above URL is kept in its relevant directory of deployed application]
Now, i want to create a Virtual Host Address for my application that is running by HTTP Server in Mid-Tier Instance so that above URL could be avoided and intutive name can be given for the URL. I do not wish to give IP, Port etc. in URL for opening my applicaiton deployed on Mid-Tier. I wish to open like IGFL.XEXP.COM (The relevant DNS entry is already placed in Main Domain Controller machine, which will redirect to this HOST).
I checked the documents on Metalink and followed the DocID: Note: 231351.1. I followed the steps of configuraiton without webcache setup, but this is not working properly and i am unable to trace it...Why so.?? Here, i am specifying my customized document root directory instead of AS default directory.
Can anyone give me steps how to do it or help me identifying what i am missing. People claim that it works, but i do not hv any idea and doing it for the first time. You help is needed....Expecting your response.
    Regards,
    Kamesh Rastogi
    Indo Gulf - Jagdishpur

Sounds like you just want the URL to not have the port listed? If so, just change the listen port in the httpd.conf file or change it in Web Cache (if you are using Web Cache).
Plus, you need to register a DNS entry in your DNS server to map the IP address to a name. You don't need to do anything in 9iAS for this part.

  • Configuring Virtual MAC Addresses on ASA

    Hello,
I configure the virtual MAC address for a interface on ASA 5520, will enter the following command on the active unit:
failover mac address Inside 0012.3456.789a 0023.4567.89ab
The active MAC address is of the same as the Inside's burned-in MAC address of the active unit.
Similarly, the standby MAC address is of the same as the Inside's burned-in MAC address of the standby unit.
Do I get the effect of failover mac address command?
Thank you for your cooperation in advance.

    Hi Bro
That’s fine really. There’s nothing wrong if you’ve configured the active MAC address the same as the Inside's burned-in MAC address of the active unit.
In an Active/Standby failover, the MAC addresses for the primary unit are always associated with the active IP addresses. If the secondary unit boots first and becomes active, it uses the burned-in MAC address for its interfaces. When the primary unit comes online, the secondary unit obtains the MAC addresses from the primary unit. The change can disrupt network traffic.
You can configure virtual MAC addresses for each interface to ensure that the secondary unit uses the correct MAC addresses when it is the active unit, even if it comes online before the primary unit. If you do not specify virtual MAC addresses the failover pair uses the burned-in NIC addresses as the MAC addresses.

  • Programs that require a network connection won't work because there is no virtual IP address available for this session.

Programs that require a network connection won't work because there is no virtual IP address available for this session.  Per application IP virtualization is enabled.
There are in fact available IP address's within the dhcp scope.  Before I dig to deep into root cause.. Could the problem be RDS CAL licensing running out, or isn't that not a symptom of my error message?

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
As per my research, there is no any issue related to RDS CAL licensing. Prior to the issue which you are facing, there are some basic setting which need to configure.
Application Compatibility – Turn on Remote Desktop IP virtualization
Some applications require a unique IP address, which is by default logically not the case if the application is running on RD Session Host. To solve this issue, Remote Desktop IP Virtualization is introduced. With this setting you enable the IP virtualization
feature. When enabling this setting you need to specify if the virtual IP is provided per session or per program. When using per program you need to define the executable to which an IP address should be configured. Desktop IP virtualization also needs the
    configuration of the next setting.
Application Compatibility – Select the network adapter to be used for Remote Desktop IP Virtualization
When you need to use Remote Desktop IP virtualization configuring this setting is mandatory. You need to specify the IP address of the Network Interface Card which should be used for this feature. Besides the IP address you need also to specify the network
mask using the slash notation, for example 192.168.77.201/24.
Application Compatibility – Do not use Remote Desktop Session Host server IP address when virtual IP address is not available

  • How do I verify an RDS session is getting a virtual IP?

I followed the MS walkthru here
    (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee308290(WS.10).aspx)
to set up a lab to test RDS virtual IP's.
I have a DC, Web Access Server (don't think I need this), Connection Broker, DHCP Server, 2 RDS Servers, 5 WinXP Clients, 5 Win7 Clients.
    DC=10.0.0.1, RDS1=10.0.0.2, RDS2=10.0.0.3, Connection Broker=10.0.0.5, Web Access=10.0.0.6, DHCP=10.0.0.10 (DHCP pool=10.0.0.100-10.0.0.200), Clients=10.0.0.20-29
I have IP Virtualization turned on through group policy per session.
I have my 2 RDS servers joined to a farm called labfarm through group policy.
I have DNS Round Robin set up via DNS on the DC.
When I connect my clients to the RDS Servers, I run ipconfig on the clients, and they all only show the static IP of the RDS Server.  I was under the impression that with IP virtualization
turned on, each client would show 2 IP's.....1 for the host, and one would be the virtual IP.
Also, when I look in the DHCP server, I do not see any leases.
I am correct in the above statement?  If not, how do I verify that my clients are all getting virtual IP's?

I couldn't wait....I just removed vmware tools and reinstalled without the driver mentioned in that article and it works great now. Thanks alot.
I have another question though.  When I connect Client1 to RDS1 and run ipconfig, I see the static IP of the RDS server, and 1 extra IP....which I expected.  Leaving Client1 connected, I connect Client2 to the same RDS1 server and run ipconfig.
I then see the static IP and 2 ip addresses.  leaving both Client 1 & 2 connected, I connect Client3 to the same RDS1 server and run ipconfig.  I still only see the same 2 ip address.  I connected up to 5 clients to the same RDS server,
and all I see are the same 2 virtual ip's on every session.
I thought each session was to be assigned it's own IP address.  Why are there only 2 being handed out? and why am I seeing multiple IP addresses per session?  I was expecting to see on each session, the RDS server IP, and 1 other unique IP address....not
multiple addresses, and surely not only 2 address.
The pool I have set up in dhcp is from .100 to .200, so there are plenty of addresses to go around. Is there a setting somewhere to limit the number of virtual IP's? Is there a way to make it unlimited? If I use this in production, I'll need up to 50 sessions
per host to have their own IP....is this possible?

  • RDS Session Broker

    Hi,
actually I have an issue in an Broker scenario on Windows 2008 R2.
    Scenario: Windows 2008 R2 RDS
2 Session Hosts for RemoteApps and Desktop (No VD)
NLB configured for the a farm on 10.1.1.100 on both Session Hosts
    Farmname = RDSFarm.xxxx.xxx
No WebAccess (IIS is installed on the Session Broker Server)
DNS Entry in place = 10.1.1.100 (nslookup works)
I moved the Session Broker from an an Domain Controller to an Member Server based on Windows 2008 R2.
I also renewed the farm certificate RDSFarm.xxx.xxx and configure it on all RDS Hosts to use this certificate.
    Now the problem:
I cannot connect to my RDSFarm.xxx.xxx: Error (using Windows 7):
"The connection cannot be completed because the remote computer that was reached is not the one you specified. This could be caused by an outdated entry in the DNS cache. Try using the IP address of the computer instead of the name."
What I've checked (and double checked):
    - RDS Session Hosts are in the local Group of the new Session Broker Host -> check
    - Farm certificate in all required Settings on Broker and Session Hosts
    - DNS Entries (Also tried with round robin and without)
    - Farm Membership
    - FlushDNS
    - Trying to use IP -  then there is a certificate warning that the computername 10.1.1.100 does not match the certificate named RDSFarm.xxx.xxx (Tis is what I expected) -  and i got a connection.
I get no more error messages except that my RDP Client cannot connect. How can I find more connection information or how to troubleshoot this ? Do I miss something during the migration from a DC to a member server ? Can anyone gave me a hint ? :-)
    Greetings
    Tobias

  • I have 2 websites and 1 IP address for my server, how do I set the DNS up?

I am having trouble following the boards and the Server Admin instructions to make sure I can activate a website.
IP address for the Snow Leopard Server on a mac mini
Server Settings for Web has the 2 domain names listed pointing to the same IP address and same port 80.
How do I point the DNS correctly to the domain I want to respond?  www.ziggythewinegal.com
If you put the IP address in a browser, it returns the default domain which is just the apache/osx server page. 64.142.85.71
If you put the first domain name in a browswer, it does the same. www.JoelQuigley.com
How do I setup the DNS to www.ziggythewinegal.com which is in the folder WebServer>ziggy>index.php ?

64.142.85.71 has an existing public DNS translation, so you'll be adding DNS CNAME (alias) records for the each of the additional hosts into your public DNS at WorldNIC DNS servers.
Your local host either isn't running DNS, or it's running local DNS.  If it's running local DNS, then hopefully it's not running with the same domain name as your public DNS services; that you have an external DNS zone and an internal DNS zone, with an external DNS domain and an internal domain name.  If you are running DNS locally and are using the same domain name for internal and external DNS servers, then you'll also need to add the translation for the new web sites into your local DNS server configuration.
Once the translation is added, add - as John Lockwood indicates - Sites into your web server.
The numbers of folders can vary.  Different sites may or may not be in the same folder, depending on what you're doing. Multiple ttraditional static HTML web sites are probably stored in separate folders.  A single site with several names can be in the same folder.  A web content management system (CMS) can be stored in one folder.
If you have a firewall here (and you should), then you may need some additional steps.  Particularly if you're running NAT, and don't already have rules and port-forwarding enabled on the server.  Given it appears you're using mail with this server, there are likely some rules in place, though you'll need to confirm that port 80 TCP and possibly port 443 TCP are (also) being forwarded for your web services.
Here is a write-up on adding what Apple calls Sites and what Apache calls virtual hosts.

  • How do I open ports on my airport extreme and assign a fixed IP Address for a device connected to my network?

I recently had a security system installed in my house.  One of the features is an EPAD which enables me to have a virtual keypad on my iphone, and computer to operate the alarm system.  The technician was not familiar with Mac's and Airports.  How do I open port 80 to 80 in my airport and assign a fixed IP address for the EPAD?  Apparently this is what is needed to make this work.

There are three ranges of "strictly local" IP addresses reserved for local Network use:
    192.168.xxx.yyy
    172.16.xxx.yyy
    10.xxx.yyy.zzz
What your Router does for you is to act as your agent on the Internet.Your requests are packaged up and forwarded on your behalf, and only when a response is expected is the response returned to your local IP address.
Directing Network Traffic to a Specific Computer on Your
    Network (Port Mapping)
AirPort Extreme uses Network Address Translation (NAT) to share a single IP address with the computers that join the AirPort Extreme network. To provide Internet access to several computers with one IP address, NAT assigns private IP addresses to each computer on the AirPort Extreme network, and then matches these addresses with port numbers. The wireless device creates a port-to-private IP address table entry when a computer on your AirPort (private) network sends a request for information to the Internet.
If you’re using a web, AppleShare, or FTP server on your AirPort Extreme network, other computers initiate communication with your server. Because the Apple wireless device has no table entries for these requests, it has no way of directing the information to the appropriate computer on your AirPort network.
To ensure that requests are properly routed to your web, AppleShare, or FTP server, you need to establish a permanent IP address for your server and provide inbound port mapping information to your Apple wireless device.
To set up inbound port mapping:
    1) Open AirPort Utility, select your wireless device, and then choose Base Station > Manual Setup, or double-click the device icon to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the password if necessary.
    2) Click the Advanced button, and then click Port Mapping.
    3) Click the Add button and choose a service, such as Personal File Sharing, from the Service pop-up menu.

  • ARP table not populating mac address for previously reachable IP address

Router has been online and working fine with one BGP neighbor for almost 2 years and no downtime.  2 weeks ago, added a 2nd BGP peer.  Everything worked fine for 2 weeks, then all of a sudden yesterday the 2nd BGP peer is disconnected and does not come back.  ISP checks and sees everything looks fine on their end.  We cannot even ping each other now.
Upon investigation, the ARP table is not even populating the MAC address for the BGP peer IP anymore (same local subnet).  Stays "incomplete" in the table no matter what we do, including clearing arp table, changing IP address, etc.
Plug a laptop directly into the 2nd BGP peer FE port and replicate the IP addressing.  Laptop cannot ping Router, but Router CAN ping laptop.  Check ARP table, but STILL no mac address assigned and now not even the ARP table showing "incomplete".
Thinking it could be the FE interface, switch to the 2nd FE interface and perform same laptop test, this time with arbitrary IP addressing.  Now cannot ping each other, no MAC in ARP table.
End up rebooting the router and lo-and-behold, everything is working normally again.  2nd BGP peer peers up instantly.
I should also mention that the 1st BGP peer worked flawlessly throughout, taking all the Internet load and having no issues throughout.
Also, the FE ports for the 2nd BGP peer are on an HWIC FE card plugged into the router.  The 1st BGP peer is plugged into the built-in GE interface.  2901 running: c2900-universalk9-mz.SPA.151-4.M4.bin
Lastly, no router resource issues, no error messages, no logs.  Just the BGP peer disconnecting.
I have never, in 20 years working with Cisco routers seen something like this before.  This is the most fundamental aspect of IP and Ethernet that was not working.
