Virtual memory exhausted when compiling packages from AUR

Recently I've seen this error more and more often. When I tried compiling some packages from AUR, I ended up getting "virtual memory exhausted" error. The first time it happened with clementine-git, then android-studio. Can I do something about it?

I am also facing the same problem.  I am trying to install a package, and the installations aborts saying 'virtual memory exhausted'. The RAM is 2 GB and i have alloted 2 GB as swap.  Things i have tried so far
-install  using yaourt
-install using  makepkg.
-change  TMPDIR to HDD.
Even when i tried it without any window manager to start, limiting the RAM usage, the problem still persists. The only way is to allot an extra swap space, but that would mean that i will have to delete a partition, which is not a feasible solution. Is there anything else one could do. ?
if it helps,

  • Virtual memory exhaustion when idle

    Everytime I leave my laptop for a long period of time (couple of hours) and then come back I get the popup that windows ran out of memory.
    So I tried to look into event viewer and here is what I see ( http://goo.gl/TLpkV6 ) //Sorry I'm not allowed to post pictures for whatever reason
    The event details display those values:
    SystemCommitLimit 34 235 564 032
    SystemCommitCharge 34 088 890 368
    ProcessCommitCharge 4 058 849 280

    PhysicalMemoryUsage 4 248 018 944
    NonPagedPoolUsage 183 934 976
    Processes 129
    I have the default Pagefile size (maintained by system) and it looks like something is using it all even though the physical memory has still about 50% free space
    So I tried to attach a task to this event and I used PsList to dump all the processes when this event occurs. However I didn't find anything abnormal in the log.
    Here it is:

    When I did the SUM, I got these results:
    VM: 33,601,910
    WS: 4,038,504
    Priv: 4,041,576
    Priv Pk: 7,109,352
    So it looks like VM is really 33GB. So I tried to run the same dump again manually when I was using the computer, because I never get out of memory dialog when I actually use my laptop and I got total size of used VM of 39,035,346 KB
    However the task manager says only 7.6 GB of virtual memory is used and like I said I never get out of memory error when I actually use the laptop.
    Task manager screenshot here: http://goo.gl/20lyjA
    I've never had this problem until I upgraded my laptop to Windows 8.1 through Windows Store. Now I see the out of memory error every morning when I come back to my laptop.
    Any ideas how to solve those memory issues when my laptop is idle?
    UPDATE:
    I just found out that it only happens when I have a monitor plugged into the DisplayPort (even though the monitor is turned off). My laptop has Core i5 3210M with the latest graphics drivers installed (10.18.10.3496)

    Today I killed Chrome for the night but the result is the same
    Also Windows Defender didn't find anything.

  • Getting virtual memory error when fetching records from database

    HI,
    I am using Oracle as Database and the Oracle JDBC driver. I have simple code which is a select statement but the problem is the resultset dies while fetching the data i.e. 5,50,000. And it gives me the memory error as its storing all in the memory. One of the way which i have serched in the old threads is using the batch method fetching rows at a time but can you tell me how to implement in my code. I am pasting my code.
    The overall functionality of my code is that it's reterving data from database and generating an XML file that would be validated with a DTD.
    //My Code
    public class Invoicef3 implements ExtractF3 {
         final String queryString = "select * from hsbc_f3_statement
    order by bill_no, duplicate,
    invoice_address1,
    invoice_address2,
    invoice_address3,
    invoice_address4,
    invoice_address5,
    invoice_address6,
    main_section, order_1, page,
    section, product_category,
    sub_sect_1, order_2,
    sub_sect_2, child_product,
    sub_sect_3, account,
    line,entry_date, currency, tier";
         public ArrayList process() {
              Connection con = null;
              Statement stmt = null;
              ResultSet rset = null;
              ArrayList arr1 = null;
              try {
                   con =
    ConnectionManager.getConnection();
                   stmt = con.createStatement();
              rset = stmt.executeQuery(queryString);
                   arr1 = new ArrayList();
                   while (rset.next()) {
                        arr1.add(
                             new F3StatementExtract(
                                  rset.getString(1),
                                  rset.getInt(2),
                                  rset.getString(3),
                                  rset.getInt(4),
                                  rset.getInt(5),
                                  rset.getString(6),
                                  rset.getInt(7),
                                  rset.getString(8),
                                  rset.getInt(9),
                                  rset.getString(10),
                                  rset.getInt(11)));
                   rset.close();
                   stmt.close();
              } catch (SQLException e) {
                   e.printStackTrace();
              } finally {
                   ConnectionManager.close(rset);
                   ConnectionManager.close(stmt);
                   ConnectionManager.close(con);
              return arr1;
    }

    The problem is that you are fetching and processing all the rows for the query, which the VM cannot handle given the heap space available. The points you could think over are:
    * Allocate more heap memory (this would help only to a limited extent)
    * Try to process only a few records at a time instead of all of them (there is actually no need to process all the records at a time. Try processing records in lots of say 1000)
    * Avoid selecting all the columns [SELECT *] from the table, if all of them are not going to be used.
    There is a slight change i have done in the code is that i am using two quereies now one is fetching all the Bills and the secondquery is fetching all the data for the relevant BILL.
    //My Code
    public class Invoicef3 implements ExtractF3 {
         /*Query to get distinct bill numbers*/
         final String queryString1 =
              "select distinct(bill_no) from hsbc_print_bills";
         /*Query to get distinct bill numbers statement details*/
         final String queryString =
              "select * from hsbc_f3_statement where bill_no='";
         public ArrayList process() {
              Connection con = null;
              Statement stmt = null;
              ResultSet rset = null;
              ArrayList arr1 = null;
              ArrayList arr2 = null;
              try {
                   con = ConnectionManager.getConnection();
                   stmt = con.createStatement();
                   rset = stmt.executeQuery(queryString1);
                   arr1 = new ArrayList();
                   while (rset.next()) {
                        arr1.add(new F3BillExtract(rset.getString(1))); //generating the Bill_No's
                   System.out.print(arr1.size());
                   rset.close();
                   stmt.close();
                   for (int i = 0; i < arr1.size(); i++) {
                        stmt = con.createStatement();
                        rset =
                             stmt.executeQuery(
                                  queryString
                                       + (((F3BillExtract) arr1.get(i)).getBill_No())
                                       + "'");
                        arr2 = new ArrayList();

    That's strange... it wasn't installed.. although I had never,ever faced a problem while compiling packages via AUR.. maybe, I should be careful when uninstalling orphans.. thanks for the help..

  • Package from AUR failed to install after doing many steps, how to rm?

    How can I see what files have been left on my hard drive after a package failed to install. I can't pacman -Rsu the package because it didnt install, but now i got some other packages that i don't need then. and probably some other stuff while the package was being extracted..
    How can i prevent from leaving a messy trail?

    Yeah gen2ly, i was using yaourt to get a package from AUR.
    I was able to uninstall the extra packages that were uninstalled, but is it possible that when the PKGBUILD failed that it left some random files somewhere? That's what I trully want to know. The other dependancies i have already removed.
    Hey thanks for the info on unzip, Runiq! unzip works miracles!!!! I installed it, and now the front end "File Roller" AKA "Archive Manager" in Gnome can suddenly handle .zip files! It's awesome! no need for p7zip or xarchiver.
    Every newbie or windows transferee should know about it!
    But anyways, is it possible the failed PKGBUILD left files somewhere?

  • [SOLVED] Building VCS packages from AUR fails

    Hello,
    Whenever I try to build a git or svn package from AUR, build fails with the error in a clean chroot enviroment:
    ==> ERROR: Unknown download protocol: svn
    Aborting...
    When the build starts, makepkg actually downloads source files properly. Any clues?

    Trilby wrote:How many packages has this happened with?  Can you give an example of one that produces this error?  If the download proceeds when the build starts, it sounds like the PKGBUILD is outdated and is manually grabbing the source in the build function (in pacman<4.0 style).
    I was building https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/uefi-shell-svn: a popular and up-to-date PKGBUILD.
    Indeed I didn't merge the conf files of  clean chroot. There was a makepkg.conf.pacnew, the lacking part in my old makepkg.conf was:
    VCSCLIENTS=('bzr::bzr'
    'git::git'
    'hg::mercurial'
    'svn::subversion')
    and some small changes. Everything works fine now. Was my bad. Sorry for incovenience and thanks for your help.

    Somehow the ruby.h is missing there which obviously shouldnt be. Did anyone get managed to compile it?

    As a workaround, I just compile the bits I need:
    pushd parser &&
    make &&
    make install &&
    popd &&
    pushd libraries/libapparmor &&
    # From /usr/share/doc/apparmor/README
    ./autogen.sh &&
    ./configure --prefix=/usr --without-perl --with-python &&
    make &&
    make install &&
    popd &&
    # Utils
    pushd utils &&
    make &&
    d=$(installed_version perl) # This will not work in Arch - FIX IT
    make PERLDIR="/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/$d/Immunix" install &&
    popd &&
    pushd profiles &&
    make &&
    make install &&
    popd
    You'd have to tweak that PERLDIR line

    I did just notice that it's showing 4gb less RAM than there should be (12 instead of 16, I'll be checking into that about the same time I hit submit) but as far as I can tell the system shouldn't even be worried about swap 99.99% of the time. Any ideas?
    Edit: On reboot system show the full 16gb of RAM.

    Could it be a hardware problem with RAM? Is there a 4 GB RAM chip in the machine that may have failed?

    If not, you can try bauerbill which does (or at least should) recognize the "--needed" flag.
    That just tries to reinstall (and rebuild as we are talking about AUR) all the AUR packages that are installed. Even the ones that doesn't need any updates.

    Obviously it doesn't. You're welcome to try bauerbill, which should do what you want using the code above.

    Does anybody have any idea? I've googled the similer problems but still can't find a clue. I'll appreciate any help.

    Welcome to the forum!
    Please provide the 4 digit Oracle version (result of SELECT * FROM V$VERSION) for the source and target servers; 10g and 11g are not versions. You also mention sql developer so what is the exact version you are using?

    Please clarify what works and what doesn't work because your statements are both incorrect and misleading.
    You can't delete the "OF out_a.ALLOCATION_ID" of the for update clause or you would get a syntax error by leaving FOR UPDATE OF with nothing specified after it.
    Also you original statement said

    But when compile a package which is fine on oracle 10g

    But now you say that if you delete the "OF..." the problem doesn't happen and the code compiles on 10g.
    Does the original code compile on 10g or not? Does it compile on 11g or not? After the original code is migrated to 11g does it compile? That is, the code is there can you manually compile it?

  • Compiling Packages from Source

    I am having some issues using the "make" command when compiling any kind of source code. When doing so, I get the sort of error that one would would expect when trying to build without headers. However, this is not the case. I do have the kernel headers installed (matching the kernel version, of course) and still I am unable to build. Interestingly enough, I am able to make packages from the AUR from source using packer, so I assume that I am able to make packages. Or am I painfully deluded in my understanding?

    TheHebes wrote:@tavianator- I have looked, the RTL8188CE driver is not present is NOT in the AUR. (packer -Ss r 8188 comes up with nothing). Furthermore, @graysky, I do have have kernel26-headers installed. Both the kernel and headers are version 2.6.39 3-1. For the most part, by the looks of it, there is no packagebuild available, so managing this through pacman is not looking like an option. From what I gather, "make" is the only way this is going to compile.
    The driver you want is indeed in the AUR.  Look at the description:
    http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=46797
    The driver name and version number exactly match the errors from make you posted above:

  • Memory Error When Compiling Resulting in Program Termination

    When I compile my file, it prints the following message
    "There is not enough memory for this task. Quit one or more
    programs to increase available memory and then try again."
    I can rule out memory and incorrectly named files:
    * I have 1 GB memory with no other programs open after a
    clean reboot when I get this message. My virtual memory is adequate
    as well. I also have 20 GB free drive space on C drive and 15 GB
    free on the network drive.
    * I have no spaces in the file names; all spaces are replaced
    with underscores.
    Any idea of what can cause this or how to fix this?

    Looks like the classes that you are using were compiled with a different JDK version.
    Try using JDeveloper 10.1.3 - which has built in JDK 5.

  • Error when Compiling package header and body - how change pkb file associat

    Hi everyone,
    it has already been noticed elsewhere (in the thread "Compiling package header and body" of Jan 12, 2010) that the compilation of package scripts sometimes fails (apparently because of a sqldeveloper bug) when the script contains the terminating slash /.
    Is this bug still open?
    Next question: In the above mentioned thread it is recommended as workaround to change the corresponding file type association from pl/sql to sql. I would like to do that; I know the place in the preferences dialog, but most of the associations there seem to be hard coded and cannot be changed.
    I would appreciate any ideas!
    Thanks in advance,
    user8632123.

    For the workaround: you'd have to change the file's extension, not the association (to e.g. .sql).
    Have fun,
    K.
