Virtual memory hundreds of megs
What does it mean that all my things are using hundreds of megabytes of virtual memory. This is in my 2004 iBook G4, 768 megs ram, Leopard 10.5.8.
Here's a screenshot of the activity monitor:
http://www.jpgbox.com/jpg/8367_800x600.jpg
Dave:
If you have the iBook G4 12-inch (Mid 2005) it comes with 512 MB of logic board RAM and you can install up to 1 module up to 1 GB in the user serviceable slot. If you have an earlier iBook G4 the max is a total of 1.25 GB.
Am I correct in assuming that with these numbers (Pages out higher than Pages in), the only fix is to increase my memory from 1GB to say 1.5GB?
The stats you have given indicate that you do not have sufficient RAM for the processes you are running. I would look at each of the processes running and see what is eating up your RAM capacity. You may have to choose not to run several memory intensive processes at the same time. And the answer to you quesion about RAM is yes. That additional 512 MB will make a difference.
In addition to RAM, performance can also be affected by your HDD. If you have the original drive that came with the computer, you may be due for a new HDD. As drives age they become sluggish and slower, before failing altogether. The average life of an laptop internal HDD is 3 to 5 years. With age and the internal heat of the drive the thin coating of lubricant on the platters thicken and become gummy, and spin out to the edges of the platters, cause the heads to stick and and slows up the drive. In addition, over time most of us tend to accumulate more and more stuff on our drives and as the available capacity becomes less and less performance decreases as well, and may even lead to drive failure. A newer, larger capacity HDD will improve the performance of your computer as the larger capacity will give you greater areal density allowing the computer to read more data on each rotation of the platters. If you have the original HDD, I would suggest that you consider installing a newer and larger capacity drive.
I have three processes working called DashboardClient. Am I supposed to have three of these processes running, or is this strange?
Each of the Dashboard clients represents a widget. I am not sure how memory they consume, but it should not be a lot. I use a widget called Stop Dashboard to quit Dashboard when I don't need it. f12 will get it going again when needed.

What's up with my Virtual Memory?
I've got a MacBook Pro 15" 2Ghz Core i7 running the 10.8.4 with all updates and 16gb of ram. I notice a couple of odd things over the course of a multiday session:
- Over a few days of usage launching and quiting most apps but with Mail, Terminal, LaunchBar and Safari running constantly, memory and virtual memory usage grow to the point where I have only a few dozen Mb of ram left and over 12 Gb of Virtual Memory consumed.
- Odder still is never, ever, in any session regardless how long, do my virtual memory statistics show more than 14 hits, not 14%, 14 all during boot time, despite hundreds of thousand of page-ins and lookups, and millions (22 million + this session) page faults.
I've noticed that Safari is the main culprit with memory consumption as it only frees up the bulk of any used if quit and relaunched. Even closing all tabs and windows has little to no affect on memory or virtual memory usage, but I have no idea why lookups once the machine is booted never, ever result in a hit despite a constantly growing number and size of swapfiles. Its almost as if Lion is encrypting the swaps but then doesn't have access to read them though I don't know how that might come about.
Anyone care to offer suggestions as to cause or debugging/troubleshooting tips?
Other notes:
This has been happening at least since 10.7.x.
Aside from apps listed above, other frequent apps are, Adobe Photoshop 5.5.x, Lightroom 5, LaunchBar, and ocassional MS Office 2011 with all updates.
Thanks,

Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently. It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster. What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent. It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs. -
Insufficient Virtual Memory to open Photoshop 6.0. What to do?
Hello,
I use PhotoShop 6.0.
Suddenly I can't open the program. Instead I get a message to the effect that the Volume that Windows is using for virtual memory isn't sufficiently large. Every other program works fine. No viruses or other problems. I have hundreds of spare gigabytes of memory. I've tried reinstalling the program. I can open ImageReady. Got me stumped.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
--Davefirst try resetting the preferences per the instructions in the faq.
that'll reset the scratch drive too. make sure you really do have enough free space. (several hundred gig ought to cut it! :) ) -
Why does my mac use virtual memory when I still have free physical memory?
I have a 2011 i7 quad core mac, I was hoping it would scream. Most of the time it does. However when trying to edit within FCPX I get a very disappointing experience with many pauses and pin wheels if I don't close every single other program.
I have 8GB of physical memory and when i'm experiencing these problems I see that i still have 1-2 gb of physical memory free or inactive. At the same time FCPX is only using 2gb of memory. I just happened to keep an eye on the VM page in/outs and noticed them going up.
Right now i'm doing some browsing and emailing, that's about it.. its sat with over 4gb of memory free or inactive and yet still the page in/outs is still going up occasionally. It's currently at over 2 million page ins, and over 1 million page outs.
So with so much physical memory free why is this happening!? At the moment the mac feels nice and responsive, but if i start trying to use FCPX i'll start to experience these slowdowns, stalls... whenever i see these i see my main hdd is being accessed whilst the pinwheel is displayed.. I mean i get it, its VM, the hdd is too full, a bit fragmented perhaps, its stalling... but i've got gigs of memory sitting free or inactive... why wont the OS use it!!!
Would my experience improve if i took the plunge and got 16gb of memory instead of 8gb!?
Thanks for your help!Because without virtual memory, managing computer RAM is a royal pain in the ...
Virtual memory cost you nothing, and gains you huge benefits, even if you do not notice it
What cost you is when you need more real RAM than is available, and things are thown out of RAM, either back to the original file it came from (Read Only information), or pushed out to the swapfiles (/var/vm/*). Then the system has to wait for slower disk access. But even this is better than not being able to run the apps until you quit something else.
(speaking as someone that starting his professional life working with 1" punch paper tape, 80 columns cards, 7-track and 9-track mag tapes, 1MB disks (you heard me right 1 Megabyte), etc..., and trust me when I tell you that virtual memory is a god send to software development).
There are a lot of problems running a modern operating system with out virtual memory. For example all the shared libraries and frameworks that provide services to an application would all need to be compiled into the application, which means every application gets bigger and instead of having a single copy of the shared library or framework, you would have dozens of copies wasting your RAM.
Without virtual memory, you would be required to find a contiguous chunk of RAM to run your application. Think of this like going out to dinner by yourself, you can find any available table, but if you go to dinner with your extended family, you need a table for 10 to 15, and if you are going to dinner with your high school graduation class, you will need hundreds of seats all next to each other and a very large table. In the later situations you have to wait until the resturante has enough contiguous space, which means you have to wait until other diners finish. There may be lots of empty tables, but they are not together, and your group wants/needs to sit together. Virtual memory allows gathering any 4K chunk of RAM, building a virtual memory map for all those random 4K chunks, and make it look like one big contiguous chunk of RAM, so you can run your application right away, no waiting.
Going back to shared libraries and frameworks. This code will need to have addresses resolved so they branch to the correct locations during execution, and it will need to have addresses resolved on where its program variables are located in RAM. Using virtual memory, you can local a shared object into RAM, then place it in everyone's virtual memory map at the exact same RAM address. This means everyone can use the exact same code, and since everyone is using it at the same RAM address, it makes life so much easier for the operating system (translation, less work, less wasted CPU time, faster execution).
When a program wants to grow, for example a web browser loading a web page (and its images) into RAM, it needs to allocate additional RAM. In the contiguous RAM model, you need to get control of the RAM that imediately following your program, but if that RAM is being used by someone else, you have to wait until that program goes away.
Virtual memory provides protection from another program looking at and modifying your program's RAM. Malware would just love for virtual memory to go away.
You want virtual memory. What you do not want is excessive paging activity.
If you are concerned, then you can launch Applicaitons -> Utilities -> Terminal. Once you have a terminal command prompt, enter the following command:
sar -g 60 100
which will tell you the number of 4k pages written to /var/vm/pagefile ever minute for 100 minutes (modify the numbers to suit your tastes). You can then go about your normal usage, and come back later to see how much you have been using the pagefiles. If you have mostly zeros, and an occasional small burst, this is noise, and not worth worrying about. If you have sustained pageout activity, with higher numbers, then you should either consider running less things all at the same time, or looking for an application that is being greedy with its memory use (or has a memory leak), OR get more RAM for your Mac if you need to do all those things at once.
But do not complain about virtual memory. Life would be much worse without it. Then again if you have a better idea, write a research paper, and get operating system vendors (as well as hardware vendors) to implement your ideas. I am serious, as I've seen many accepted computing ideas be overturned by good new ideas. -
As mentioned in my question above, it happens usually during playing games. I wondered if there were someway to clean out the virtual memory, as opposed to it "increasing" continually and overloading my memory in general. You are speaking with a computer novice for the most part, so I am unfamiliar with a lot. I do do updates and general maintenance on the computer, but is that enough for this issue?

Physical memory is the memory that is installed on your computer as real memory. To be able to run programs that require more memory and more programs at the same time (via time sharing and task switching) it is also possible to move (swap) currently not needed code and data to disk to make room for other programs and data. The total memory available for programs is the Virtual Memory.
You can check the Virtual Memory settings here: Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Settings (Advanced tab)<br />
Windows can manage more memory then is physical available and that memory is stored in a page file on your hard drive.
If the size of that file is not large enough and all available memory is in use then you get the Virtual Memory is low warning.
Make sure that you have at least 1 GB or the recommended setting for the Virtual Memory.
If you have less than 1 GB physical memory installed on your computer then if possible add more memory.

High Virtual memory usage when using Pages 2.0.2
Hey there,
I was just wondering whether there had been any other reports of unusually high memory usage when using Pages 2.0.2, specifically Virtual memory. I am running iWork 06 on the Mac listed below and Pages has been running really slowly recently. I checked the Activity Monitor and Pages is using hardly any Physical memory but loads of Virtual memory (so much so that the Page outs are almost as high as the Page ins (roughly 51500 page ins / 51000 page outs).
Any known problems, solutions or comments for this problem? Thanks in advanceI don't know if this is specifically what you're seeing, but all Cocoa applications, such as Pages, have an effectively infinite Undo. If you have any document that you've been working on for a long time without closing, that could be responsible for a large amount of memory usage.
While it's good practice to save on a regular basis, if you're making large amounts of changes it's also a good idea to close and reopen your document every once in awhile, simply to clear the undo. I've heard of some people seeing sluggish behavior after working on a document for several days, which cleared up when the document was closed and reopened.

"Unable to open a virtual memory file" and "Unable to initialize Photoshop" errors
Hi
I installed Photoshop CS6 64-bit on Windows 7 SP1 64-bit.

Unable to initialize Photoshop because the file is locked. You do not have permission or the file is being used by another program. ...
How come?
Thanks
ByeIn other words, I have installed Photoshop CS6 64-bit (using the default directory) on Windows 7 SP1 64-bit.
My computer has 4 GB of RAM and a virtual memory file of 6644 MB.
When it starts, the two above messages are displayed also with an account of Administrator type?
How come?
Thanks

After upgrading to Lion, the Finder will increase the virtual memory while using external HD
after upgrading to Lion, the Finder will increase the "virtual memory size" while using external HD. I check it using Activity Monitor and found that "Finder" wll increase the "Virtual Memory Size" and "Private Memory Size". and then after a while. the system told me my HD is full and hanging there.
My External HD is 1TB. and I have installed new version Paragon NTFS for Mac V.9.01. I am not sure it is related or not.
but I attached my external HD. the "Finder" will start to increase the "Virtual Memory Size".
please help out this case and solve this issue.
thank you !!!The one has nothing to do with the other. Virtual memory size and Private memory size are used by developers to analyze their software. it has nothing to do with anything related to the user.

High virtual memory after sleep with Mavericks
Here is a screenshot of activity monitor below, right after lifting the lid on my MacBook Air 2013 running Mavericks 10.9.2 (upgraded from Mountain Lion).
It's in french but you can see that the virtual memory is running higher than I would expect (IMO). There is no slowdown of the OS, no beach balls, no memory pressure, ever.
This does NOT happen on my Macbook Pro 2012 (standard 13", no SSD) in identical conditions under the same OS version.
Here what i do in more detail. I run several apps at once:
- MS Word (3 ou 4 docs)
- Pages (1 or 2 docs)
- Preview (1 or 2 medium or large PDFs)
- Mail
- iTunes
- Safari (no more than 5 or 6 tabs at once)
- Messages
- A spell checker (Antidote. Yes, a french one)
- Zotero
- Activity monitor
RAM used is never above 6 Gb, and some it is usually cache anyway.
At the end of the day I close the lid to put the MBAir to sleep. The next day I see this high (or is it really that high??) virtual memory usage, with swap used anywhere from 300 to 900 Mb.
Computer runs smoothly, no hang ups, everything is seamless!
Is this normal operating behavior for a Macbook Air??
I know Mavericks introduced new RAM management, but should I just stop looking at Activity Monitor like I have OCD (I dont. I think.) or should I call Apple? Or do a clean install?
Suggestions welcome! If I'm missing info please advise. If a thread already exists about this I didn't find it...You are not alone in being baffled and worried about the memory readings in the Activity Monitor. There are many postings on this. Mavericks uses memory quite differently than previous OS X versions and so the numeric memory usage readings no longer mean what they used to. The best indicator now is the Memory Pressure graph, which on yours is low and green (good).
Computer runs smoothly, no hang ups, everything is seamless!
Yep. Mavericks runs great. There is nothing you need to change or be worried about, espeically with 8 GB of RAM.
should I just stop looking at Activity Monitor like I have OCD
Yes, unless you want to watch the green Memory Pressure graph but that would be booring. -
How to change Virtual Memory in Windows 7 with SSD and 16GB RAM
I have SSD Samsung 850Pro with OS Windows 7 and have installed physical RAM 16GB.
In Adobe Help/Optimize performance/Photoshop written :
" To change Virtual Memory in Windows 7 and Vista, quit all applications and then do the following:
Choose Start > Control Panel, and double-click System.
Choose Advanced System Settings in the Tasks list.
Select the Advanced tab and click Settings in the Performance section.
Select the Advanced tab and click Change.
Deselect Automatically Manage Paging File Size For All Drives.
Click each hard disk letter to show the available space on that drive. Select a hard drive that has three times the amount of your computer’s installed RAM and doesn’t contain a scratch disk.
Select Custom Size, and type the amount of your physical RAM plus 300 MB in the Initial Size box. Type three times the amount of your computer’s installed RAM into the Maximum Size box.
Click Set, and then click OK. Continue to click OK to exit all dialog boxes.
Restart the computer: If you have applications open, select Restart Later, close your applications, then restart Windows. Otherwise, click Restart Now. "
Select Custom Size, and type the amount of your physical RAM plus 300 MB in the Initial Size box. Type three times the amount of your computer’s installed RAM into the Maximum Size box.
I have 16GB RAM
in the Initial Size box : 16384+300=16684MB
in the Maximum Size box:16684x3=50052MB
but in the description of SSD written :
" In order to address any potential lack of memory capacity, the Windows operating system automatically generates a block of virtual memory (pagefile.sys) on the C: drive. For example, a Windows® 7 64-bit system with 4 GB of physical memory would generate 4 GB of virtual memory at boot time.
In the past, before PC Memory (DRAM Modules) were available in high volume, PCs needed to utilize some HDD space to address any memory shortcomings. Today, with PCs featuring 4 GB of memory or more, it is possible to reduce or even eliminate the use of virtual memory. Additionally, using expanded physical memory, rather than creating virtual memory on the SSD, has performance and reliability advantages for the entire system. Some applications may require the use of virtual memory. In this case, please consider your specific application requirements before disabling this feature!!! ”..."SET virtual memory in the Initial Size Box :200MB and in the Maximum Size box: 2048MB"
what is the right choice ???
Please HelpWindows set to default virtual memory : 16348 MB =16GB !
But SSD program Samsung Magician wants virtual memory between in the Initial Size Box :200MB and in the Maximum Size box: 2048MB or 4096MB. If more than 8GB suggests that SSD will work slowly.
Perhaps the description in Adobe execution Help / Optimize / Photoshop is not correct or ? -
What the heck is going on with my Virtual Memory??!!
I'm not really sure why but when I check activity monitor and see my VM it says i'm using anywhere from 230-270 gigs of virtual memory. This is literally fresh out of restart when it says this much and never changes. I go through and check every process I see runing and create a quick estimate of the virtual memory being used, and it's definitely not over 10 gigs if even 5; honestly I think it's listing between 1-2.
What the heck could be causing this? Verified HD and came up clean. Should I be concerned? I'm not gonna lie this macbook isn't running the best it used to be. Watching videos, whether mp4, mkv, youtube, is pretty laggy. I'm aways sure to close all other processes to to try and maximize video performance, not that it helps much. I'm considering a fresh install and recovery via timemachine.I excluded the list of fonts from step 4 as I'm a graphic design major and have well over a thousand...and I didn't want you to burn up your scroll wheel or rub the tips of your fingers off with the amount of scrolling you'd have to do had I included them .

Error message that no virtual memory pops up & crashes when application is run for more than 1 hour
My application uses VISA serial operations. It has arrays to store data collected from various devices. I reinitialise the arrays each time the index reaches 50.
Data acquisitions is carried out in separate threads by invoking the runVI method.
When i run the application on Win XP continuaously for more than 1 hour it gives an error message that no more virtual memory to complete the task and the system hangs up.
I open the serial port only once and close it when the application is terminated. But serial read/write operations are done continuaously
Is the error caused due to memory leakage? How can i solve the problem. It's very urgent and i shall be thankful if i ge
t the help.Yes, it sounds like a memory leakage (either that or you're trying to run an advanced app on an old computer w/ little memory and a small hard drive).
Things to try:
1. Ensure it's only labview, and not say labview and another application interacting. This isn't a likely case, but you never know what people have on their boxes and I've seen some weird things with virus scanners. Hit Ctrl-Shift-Esc to get the task manager. Go to processes and watch the memory consumption (click Memory twice to sort in descending order) of the various processes. If labview keeps rising, you've got a leak.
2. If only a reasonable amount of memory is being used, double check your page file settings (read virtual memory).
From the Control Panel
Select System
Select
Advanced Tab
Under Performance, select the Settings button
Select Advanced Tab
Under Virtual Memory, let windows dynamically adjust the page file (and any XP speed tweakers out there can now chime in about how wrong this is. This essentially allows windows to keep upping the virtual memory as needed by various processes.
3. Find the leak. In LV Tools->Advanced->Profile VIs. Turn on memory stats. Start the profiler. Start your vi. If the vi crashes labview totally, you'll have to keep hitting snapshot to find the leaky vi (the one that's memory keeps growing).
4. Upload the vi to the forum so we can give it a looksee.

I encountered this problem on our SQL2012 and I have tried different scenarios (see below) to no avail. I have decided to give up and check if someone here has encountered this and resolved it.
One thing I know, it's not a memory issue. Both servers we're using has lots of memory to spare and we monitor the memory as the replication goes through it's steps.
I hope someone can help me on this. Thanks!
The Error:
The merge process could not allocate memory for an operation; your system may be running low on virtual memory. Restart the Merge Agent.
Our Scenario
We're using SQL Server 2012 SP1. All subscriptions are pull based.
We're using direct Merge Replication (not FTP or web sync)
We already have 10 active replications with larger databases. Only 1 has this issue.
Database size is less than 5 GB
Rebuilding the publisher is not an option.
What have I tried?
There is no memory problem --- we have lots to spare
I have tried re-initialization of the database. Same problem.
I tried deleting the database and reinitializing it. Same problem
New snapshot. Same problem.
I tried changing the subscriber server but still same issue.
MCP, MCSD, MCDBA (ANXA)Here is the result for the sp_configure on our subscriber. We're doing a pull on the server with the issue.
name
minimum
maximum
config_value
run_value
max server memory (MB)
128
2147483647
2147483647
2147483647
In addition, I made a comparison between the working servers and the one with the issue -- there seems to be a difference in the service pack. Publisher has none but the subscriber is operating on SP1. But still strange as only 1 database is affected.

1. I was editing an article, and the screen went grey every time i typed in one character. It encouraged me to start again, but the same thing kept happening, until it finally said the virtual memory was filled, and I had to go to "help" to fix the problem. So here I am Help!!! Sahra
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

You can check the memory usage by Firefox on the about:memory page.
You can open <b>about:</b> pages via the location/address bar like you open a web page. -
More hard-drives = faster Virtual Memory ? or not...
2 internal HD's... only one is being used for Virtual Memory. If both were being used, it could double VM disk access - simultaneously uploading.
I know that buying Crazy Expensive Mac Pro RAM would sort the problem out, but i ain't going to do that any time too soon. Besides i might get a new hard-drive... and 3 drives should be able to do VM noticably faster.
does anybody know if i can set the second drive as a VM scratch disk also ?
- or what part of mac os x controls these Virtual Memory and disks and if that can be tweaked
- or are there any good little apps for controlling VM?
Thanks peeps.
nicholas.Thanks.
I'm not going to do that, though it is certainly of interest. I had a thread on another board which went from "use a raid single" to "you cheepscate buy ram" too quickly for my liking.
Of interest from that was :
1) Not having ram is bad when it hits disk VM - that's the slow bit.
1.1) so if you buy a little, that will raise the ceiling and you'll hit VM less often. Every titchy bit helps.
2) if you never go beyond your ram - more ram is wasted.
3) with some EXPERT tweaking performance can be gained from controlling where VM pages to - but really either buy ram or use less apps.
4) the reason i brought it up was flight sim mode on google earth (apple alt a). Which is a waste of time anyway ! But that sometimes freezes and writes to disk for 5-10 seconds. My professional apps, are almost always in ram, so i think i'll forget it. Or buy ram.
5) if you want to know if you need ram - look at activity monitor - but combine "free AND inactive" to see how much/little is spare. Also read the "vm page ins".. if there are lots (7,000 in 10 minutes) you're into slow VM land.
really... it's only apparent because the mac pro is lightning fast most of the time, and WHEN you're waiting on the HD - even though it's still running really fast - it is more apparent.
Thanks everyone. Happy Mac'in.
