Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
  1. See Lion/Mountain Lion's Storage Display.
  2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
  3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
  4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
  5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
  6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.
Virtual Memory requires the use of space on the HDD, so if you have no space then VM doesn't work and get the same error messages. VM supports RAM, not the hard drive.

  • Bad RAM memory (memory leak) on Macbook Air

I have a recent issue with my Macbook Air (2GB, 120 GB, bought two years ago, used as main laptop, upgraded to Mountain Lion 6 months ago):
Even though I run the same applications as before (Safari, Office for Mac, Calendar, iTunes, so nothing too heavy like Photoshop, Final Cut, or Autocad), I started receiving a warning message saying that there isn't enough memory to perform the applications.
I have 2GB RAM - which has always been enough for what I do. Also, my HD has 20GB of free space (from 120 GB), which also seems to be fine. It has performed well under much worse HD conditions.
I have noticed that things get even worse, when I open Office for Mac or Utilities - System Monitoring, Disk Utility (!!!)
I read that many people have faced a similar problem, and I have already tried everything that was suggested in their discussions:
    - purge
    - deleting calendar agent (someone said it could be caused by exchange calendars etc)
    - Alt (Options)+R / Command+P while rebooting
    - deinstalling Skype and Dropbox
I have just installed Memory Booster and Memory Clean from the Appstore - they automatically clean up the Inactive RAM when my free memory gets too low. This seems to have sorted things for now, but both applications have to do cleaning every 3-5 min.
Right now, with only Safari running (in addition to Memory Booster), my stats are ridiculous:
    - Free: 11MB
    - Inactive: 739 MB
    - Active: 744 MB
    - Wired: 298 MB
Virtual memory is steadily above 1GB...
I would really appreciate some help/advice. There is no apple service center in my city...
    Thank you in advance!

What is the exact text of the message you are receiving?
My guess would be that your problems are twofold. First, 2 GB of RAM is bare minimum for Mountain Lion. If you were running Snow Leopard before, you will be able to do less on the same amount of RAM with Lion or Mountain Lion. If you are running all those apps you mention at the same time, you need more than 2 GB of RAM.
In addition, if your hard drive is running out of free space, you may be having an issue because of that as well. Your machine needs free hard drive space to store things like virtual memory swap files. How much space is free on your hard drive?

  • Can I run rhino and grasshopper on a virtual windows on my macbook air?

Can I run rhino and grasshopper on a virtual windows on my macbook air? I keep getting a not enough memory message.

The USB stick from your MBA cannot be used on any other Mac. You will need to purchase a retail copy of Snow Leopard for your other computer.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard you can still purchase a copy from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.] Ask for a Sales Representative.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.

  • I am unable to install Virtual Machines on my Mid-2013 MacBook Air

    Dear Apple Support Community,
I have recently moved away from a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro to a new Mid-2013 MacBook Air. As much as it pains me, I have a need to install a virtual machine running Windows 7 in order to utilize an application called vSphere. The vSphere web interface is too unreliable to use via any web browser, so running a Windows VM is the only way forward.
However, when using VMWare Fusion 5 (I know 6 is available, but I do not have a license for it) or VirtualBox (very latest version) I receive an error which states that my CPU is not 64-bit compatible. I was under the impression that since Snow Leopard (10.6) was release that Mac OS was fully 64-bit. My MacBook Air is currently running Mavericks (10.9.1). It has a 1.3GHz Intel Core i5 CPU.
I read that Apple restricts access to the EFI firmware settings, as I originally thought it was a case of enabling Virtualization capabilities on the processor. To further add to the dilemma my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro has no issues running VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox, so I am at a loss as to why I am unable use these virtualization platforms on my new Mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I remember reading somewhere that the new macbook air's from 2013 have a 64 bit core i5 4250u processors.
    Also intel mentions it here:

  • Memory on my macbook air keeps disappearing.  I have 120 gigs and I am down to 150mb without adding any files.

Memory on my macbook air keeps disappearing.  I have 120 gigs and I am down to 150mb without adding any files.

Thanks...I have tried the various options and the only item of interest is that my only account on this computer says it has 102 gig of memory used up.  However, when I open and look at the individual files, they add up to less than 15 gigs.

  • Can I use a memory stick to back up my MacBook Air and what size do I need?

    i Have a MacBook air , processor 1.3 Ghz Intel core i5, 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory. Operating on OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.1.
it will not open up Safari, it crashed out of Safari with an error message and will not ooen it up now however many times I try.  I was reading Daily Mail on line at the time.  I can get onto the Internet by using Chrome but it feels as if Chrome is in charge of me rather than the other way round.  when I type in an address it just takes me where it wants to go rather than the website I want to to.  I now want to back up my data but left my drive in UK (I am in USA at the moment.) so wondered if I can back all my data (very important data) on to a memory stick so I can wipe my computer and start again.  I have an appointment with a techie at the Apple shop on Saturday but need to back up my data before the appointment, so not sure what to do.
ALso my IPad is very unstable after using the Daily Mail site, it has always seemed to be fine before but this weekend seems to have created problems for both my MacBook Air and IPad Mini...

You'd probably be better served to use a conventional external USB:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/
Easier to use, harder to lose and more dependable.

"generally speaking, a HDD (or SSD) is always going to be more reliable than a flash drive. USB flash drives are made to TRANSFER files, not to store them. Still, you get what you pay for, and I have had a few flash drives that have lasted a very long time"

  • Please explain me, how to remove an usb stick or memory chip? With experiences only in pc:s, I do not find on my first apple e.g. MacBook Air a solution. Until now I have succeeded to destroy one chip full of photos and - there's no life more in the port.

Please explain me, how to remove an usb stick or memory chip? With experiences only in pc:s, I do not find on my first apple e.g. MacBook Air a solution. Until now I have succeeded to destroy one chip full of photos and - there's no life more in the port...
Someone told me just to remove the chip in clicking it to the trash can and voilá - it would be done. But as I did so, on the screen appeared a text which let me know, that that way had been the wrong one...
I should have clicked Finder plus something.... which I do not now remember but which was then not found behind the Finder.
So please would someone be so kind and tell me, where I can find explanations for the most simple functions. The manual I got does not include a clue.
    Thank you!

First make sure that no application is using or has open any files on the disk. Then:
Click and drag the disk icon on the desktop to the trash. Wait for the system to recognize the action, and the icon should disappear from the desktop. It is then safe to remove the device.
Alternatively, you can secondary click on the disk icon, and then primary click "Eject (name of disk)". Wait for the icon to disappear off the desktop, and then it is safe to remove the drive.
Here is a detailed help document on the subject.

  • How do i install more memory in my macbook air? it only has 4GB

How can i install more memory in my macbook air? it has 4GB only and it keeps telling me my start up disk is full.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
In the case of the MacBook Pro with Retina display and the MacBook Air, memory is soldered into the logic board, so you can't add more memory after buying the MacBook.
However, memory isn't your problem. One thing is the memory and another thing is the hard drive, and you are running out of space in the hard drive, not in memory.
To fix this, just delete files that you don't need, or move them to an external drive, in order to make free space on your MacBook

  • Why does my Macbook Air only have 64MB of dedicated video memory

Hello, I created a windows partition on my Macbook Air and after going into my Display settings I see that it only has 64MB of dedicated video memory out of 1696MB. Please tell me how I can fix this problem as I should have much more Dedicated memory from my Macbook air.
Additional INFO: MacBook Air Early 2014 edition, and has Intel 5000.

Hey thanks a lot for the quick reply Loner, however, I'm not really sure what you mean (sorry I'm a bit slow when it comes to computers). I checked out your link, and when I do the same steps as in the link by going into screen resolution> advanced> adapter: it shows Total Available Graphics Memory- 1696MB, and Dedicated Video Memory 64MB, but it only uses 64MB, it doesn't use more when it needs to.
I tried playing GTA 4 on my laptop via bootcamp, and in-game it tells me my laptop is only using 64MB of video memory and the game requires at least 260 or so, and my laptop won't use more (at least I'm pretty sure it is not using more or the game wouldn't give me that mssg).
Again, thanks for your response, and looking forward to what you have to say, or any other that want to chime in Thanks a lot as always.

  • How can I zero out the memory on my macbook air?

I have an 11 inch mid 2011 macbook air and cannot figure out how to erase the memory so that none of the data is recoverable. I booted from the recovery HD but when I went to the erase section of the menu, the security options button and the zero out empty space option were both greyed out. How can I clean off my Mac?

You can't, and don't need to, zero an SSD in Disk Utility. Once you've erased it the data is unrecoverable.

  • Hi. I am going to be buying a macbook air 2012 soon with 4 GB of RAM and wondering how much memory space does norton AV take up and does it drastically slow down the mac. Thanks a lot :)

    Hi
I am going to be buying a macbook air 2012 model with 4 GB ram soon. I was wondering how much space (memory) does Norton AV take up and does it drastically slow down the computer. Also, I am going off to uni so will predominantly be using the laptop for surfing and MS office.
    Thanks a lot

Sorry to disagree mende1.  In this age of email attachments and social networks, it is actually a good idea to have a good antivirus on your system. {I realize that this is a religious argument and I will say no more}.  With that said, the general concensus is that Norton AV is terrible. It is intrusive and uses up a lot of cycles.
There are a lot of better AV clients out there.  I use ClamXav which is free and uses the clamav antivirus that is open source.
