Virtual PC 7.0.3 in PowerMac G4 DA with OS X: how to make it boot from CD?

I'm facing an issue with Virtual PC in my PowerMac G4 Digital Audio, with Mac Os X 10.5.8.
I've just installed Virtual PC 7 and upgraded it to 7.0.3.
Everything seems to be running ok, except for one issue: it doesn't boot from CD. So, the Virtual PC doesn't have any OS yet! I'm not able to install it!
I've already entered the setup screen (pressing DEL during the boot) and there I can see the virtual HD and the virtual CD. Now I've selected CD-ROM (virtual CD) as the only bootable device to try to force the CD reading during the boot, but it doesn't work anyway.
At the Virtual PC screen lower border, I can see that the CD has been captured. When it boots, a small green button flashes the on the CD icon, and again when I press any key to make it seek for OS. But nothing happens else than that.
I've already executed all the instructions in Help, but nothing works. There must be something missing!
Has someone already faced such an issue?
Thank you very much.
Regards,
Ciro.

Try making an ISO image of your OS CD and pointing VPC at that instead - I had some problems with VPC under Leopard as it was never updated to be properly compatible, I eventually got Windows XP installed using an ISO image of it though.

  • Virtual PC 7.0.3 in PowerMac G4 DA with OS X: Access to USB.

Dear friends, I'm trying migrate definitely from my PC to Mac. Most applications I've already switched to Mac OS ones, but some of them exist only for Windows platform.
That's the case of some engineering applications such as MPLab IDE from Microchip. I've been able to install it completelly into my Virtual PC (on Mac) and now I'd like to make it connect with the hardware USB interface. Unfortunately I haven't got any success yet!
Do you know if there's any kind of port virtualization that is not supported by applications that drive ports directly?
Refference: I'm talking about the same Virtual PC of a past issue: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2628754&tstart=0.
    Thank you very much.

  • I currently run Windows 7 on my iMac using the Parallels software on a Virtual Machine. I now wish to use Windows through bootcamp. How do I remove windows from the Virtual Machine

I currently run Windows 7 on my Imac through a Virtual Machine format with the Parallels software. I now wish to remove Windows from the VM restore the Hard Drive to a single partition then install windows 7 using bootcamp. How do I go about it

The virtual machine isn't a partition on your hard drive, it's just a file. You can delete the vm by going into Paralells preferences or just drag t to the trash. Bootcamp will partition your hard drive for a Win 7 install.

  • My PowerMac G5 will not read my Leopard disc, dual layer dvd, how do I force boot from UBS DVD drive to install?? Or is there another way. It just keeps spitting out the disc!!

I have a power mac G5. Ir originally had Tiger on it. When I reinstalled for some odd reason the disc decided to install Panther, no clue why!! Either way I got a hold of a Leopard disc for this computer. It is apple certified and bought from Amazon and works for this computer.
Hoever, for some odd reason it keeps spitting it out. Discs under 4.7 GB is reads fine but the bigger discs it wont seem to read. What I need is to know how to get, or force, it to boot from an extrenal dvd drive. Or any other methods to get it to install.

I do not believe you can "Upgrade" directly from the "Panther" installed on your computer to "Leopard".  You have to have at least "Tiger" installed already Before you can install Leopard.  Thus your Mac is not recognizing the Leopard Install disk.

Clarisworks, you need Appleworks, which will only work with Mac OS X10.6.8 or earlier.  See this tip if you must go newer.  Mac Pros with newer hardware configuration than July 20, 2011 can't use Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier without this tip and then it would be Mac OS X Server.  I'm not sure if the new black Mac Pro supports that configuration or not.
iPhoto, there is an iPhoto for all versions of Mac OS X.
iTunes, there is an iTunes for all versions of Mac OS X.  Note with iTunes versions 11 and later, which are needed for syncing with iOS 7 or or later, you will lose coverflow, if you liked that feature.  Sadly you can't run an older version of iTunes from within Mac OS X 10.9 or later.
Sketchup: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/60107 shows the versions that will work with intermediate Mac OS X versions, and this shows the latest version: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/36208 be sure to click on the operating system you choose to use.
GIF - Viewing GIFs Apple's Preview can do that.  Editing them, I like http://www.lemkesoft.com/ Graphicconverter.
DMG is able to be opened by all versions of Mac OS X.  This are just "disk images" which store programs on a virtual disk that will open when double clicked.    Frequently you'll find the installer of the said program inside.  To find out if the program itself is compatible with 10.7 through 10.9, see http://www.roaringapps.com/

  • How can I get Configurator off my work PowerMac and have my ipad, ipod4 controlled by my macbook pro from home?

Hi, I put apple configurator on my work machine which has all my itunes, my entire Apple Macintosh History on it and used apple configurator thinking it would be a great way to sync all my devices. I get it now, that it doesn't do that for the private person but is really for an institution or employer. Be that as it may I threw away the app from my main computer and thought I would be done with it.
I just reinstalled apple configurator and thought I took all devices off it. My ipad disappeared from the itunes menu. I plugged my ipad back into my machine and Paulz Config reappeared. I need to get this off my work PowerMac and have my ipad, ipod4 controlled by my macbook pro from home. And does it matter if I use the same email address that's listed with my power mac at work to easily switch the dominant mac over to my home from work. Things can get dicey at work and I don't want my life tied to the work power mac anymore. Thanks, Paul I realize there are a ton of questions in this. I am gratefull if I can just get the apple config off everything.

To completely remove Apple Configurator from a Mac, you need to delete the application along with the following:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.configurator.
You may also want to delete the contents of ~/Library/Keychains and /var/db/lockdown to remove the Supervision Certificate, public and private keys and device pairing information. NOTE: There are other things in Keychains that you may or may not want to delete. Google "keychains" to learn more about what's in that folder.
    Good luck!

  • Can I boot from an external drive with a "Virtual CD"

I just purchased a Hitachi LifeStudio external hard drive for use as my Time Machine backup. When I plugged it in to my MacBook running 10.6.4, I realized that it had one of those "Virtual CDs" that contained the manufacturers crapware, similar to Western Digital's MyWare or whatever its called. It shows up in disk utility as an actual separate disk and not just another partition that can be wiped.
I reformatted the drive using GUID and and created 3 HFS+ Journaled partitions. One was going to be for the 10.6 installer, one for the 10.6 boot, and one for my time machine backup. I restored a 10.6 install dvd disk image I created using disk utility to the 10.6 installer partition (with erase destination checked) then option booted my mac and the partitions did not show up. The only thing I could see was my internal hard drive.
I have done this many times before and it has always worked so Im trying to figure out what Im doing wrong. The only thing I can think of is that the "Virtual CD" that Hitachi put on this external drive is stopping the Mac from seeing the bootable partitions I created. I even went into system preferences>startup disk and blessed the 10.6 install partition. That didn't work either, the computer just booted to my internal drive.
So my questions are. Is it because of this "Virtual CD" that I can't boot from my external drive? If so, is there a way around it? I already searched their web site and emailed their tech support asking for a firmware update to remove the virtual cd.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, it's a known issue. You've already referred to the issue with WD systems. WD has a long list of products that are either not compatible with Macs or won't boot a Mac.
There are practically no problems with bare drives, but once installed in an enclosure there is no guarantee that the package will function as a bootable device. This is especially the case if the manufacturer uses some sort of "virtual" scheme intended for using the device as a sort of one button backup device.
External drives don't have to specifically say anything about being Mac bootable or compatible. It's up to the consumer to verify compatibility and usability.

  • Can you replace a powermac g5 mbd with and Intel mbd?

Can you replace a powermac g5 mbd with and Intel mbd?

I think you would have to do a lot of work in addition to just replacing the motherboard. Like getting a new power supply for instance as the cables won't match what Apple specs for their designed and built hardware. I think the best you can hope for is to reuse the Aluminum tower case, and that's about it.

  • Powermac G5 - unable to boot from Cd

    Hi, all!
I oicked a Powermac G5 (2003) which had the hard disk removed. So I bought a 160 GB SATA hard drive and put it in. Then I bought the original MAC OS X v 10.2 install Cd's. So far it seemed that this was all I needed to make it run. Unfortunately I can not get it to boot from The CD. All I get is the gray screen with the folder-shape smiley face alternating with the question sign.  I tried holding down the C key, also the Cmd+Opt+Shift+Del key combination but, the result was the same. I could load the Open Firmware and I tried to boot the cd using command: Boot cd:, \\:tbxi. This was the response: load-size=258b2 adler32=878490d1
    Parsing <CHRP-BOOT>
    Bootinfo is not compatible
I also proceded the NVRAM and PRAM reset, but didn't help.
I will apreciate any help or advice. Thanks in advance.

  • PowerMac G4 (AGP) suddenly won't boot from its internal HDs

Hi, here's a description of a weird and sudden issue on my mac. Hope one of you out there has a cure.
The system: Powermac G4 (AGP) 450MHz, 512MB RAM, upgraded a couple of years ago with an 133 ATA controller card (Acard 6280M). The card controls my two internal HDs of 160GB, which are from two separate brands. Until 1 week ago I regularly booted from one HD with OS10.4.6 (let's call it hd_A), while used the other HD as a data backup space (hd_B).
    The problem:
-1 week ago I upgraded hd_A to OS10.4.7 using the incremental package. The system restarted once without problems, but from the second time, all attempts failed. The startup screen showed the flashing question mark: a boot system could not be found.
-I thus booted from the install DVD (10.4) and installed OS10.4.0 into hd_B. The system was then able to boot from hd_B only on the first attempt. From the second, again flashing question mark. Note that on that single successful boot, I verified that hd_A was readable and apparently intact, plus ran DiskUtil which reported no problems on either HDs.
-Running DU from the Install DVD reports no problem on either HDs.
-Running Startup Disk from the Install DVD correctly reports bootable systems 10.4.7 on hd_A and 10.4.0 on hd_B, but attempting a restart from either of them leads to the flashing question mark.
    -Resetting PRAM didn't help.
-Holding option during startup brings up the boot volume selection screen with the options of the Tiger install DVD or the 10.4.0 system on hd_B (note that 10.4.7 on hd_A is not shown). Selecting 10.4.0 on hd_B leads, after a delay of a few seconds with a blank screen to a sudden autonomous shutdown of the computer!
    Other data:
-The battery reads 3.7V on a voltmeter, so it must be ok.
-Curiously, System Profiler run from the install dvd reports the two internal HDs as 'removable media'. Can's say how it reported them previous to the entire issue.
    Thanks, Lo

You can't use the iBook installer on another model Mac. You need a retail version of Panther 10.3 or Tiger 10.4.
If you do a Google search for M9227LL/A (Panther 10.3 retail install CDs) or M9228LL/A (Family Pack), you may find a set. The CDs should be black with a white X.
After you install the base 10.3.x, update to the final Panther version 10.3.9. See Mac OS X 10.3.9 Update (Combo) http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2464
Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.
Also check this web store http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521
Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Look at this link Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger Installing Software Support Page

You can also download the Tiger Installation and Setup Guide

When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.

  • Powermac G5 won't boot from install dvd.

The hard drive in my Powermac G5 quit, so I put in a new one that was formatted. I put the install DVD (OSX Server 10.4) in and booted. Every time I try I get a kernel panic. Everything else in the computer works. I have tried putting it into target disk mode and installing the OS using another computer, but it won't let me because the computer doesn't run tiger. I have also tried putting the functioning Mac into TDM with the install disk in it, then booting it from that but I still get a kernel panic. The computer was functioning normally before the hard drive crashed.

    OK, that's a Late 2005 G5...
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g5/specs/powermac_g5_dual_2.3.htm l
    Pre-Installed MacOS:
    X 10.4.2 (8E90)
    Maximum MacOS:
    X 10.5.8
So, If that Install Disc is in fact 10.4.0 as I suspect, then it won't work for your G5... no drivers.
I can only see a couple of options at this point...
    1. A newer Install Disc.
    2. An older Mac & a Firewire drive to install it to, update to 10.4.11, move FW drive to G5.

  • Moving backward to Powermac G4 AGP - firmware, booting from external HD

My iMac G5 died so I am moving back to a Powermac G4 400 Mhz AGP for now. I have OS X 10.0.4 running on the G4. The current Boot ROM version on the G4 is 3.34f1.
I'd like to put the clone of my G5 system which is currently on an external firewire drive onto the G4. So far I've read that I need to update the firmware so that the G4 can be booted from the external drive. I also read that I need to do this from OS 9 (I have a 9.1 disc) and that I need to do this BEFORE I install OS X which I've already done.
How can I erase the hard drive and remove OS X from the G4 so that I can install OS 9 and do the firmware update? How can I get a web browser in OS 9 that will let me download the firmware update? Can I download the update in OS X, burn to disc and bring into OS 9?
    Thanks for any help.
    -Nate

Some Macs require that you install the firmware update PRIOR to installing OS X. However, I bought a used G3 Pismo laptop that had Tiger installed, but not the required firmware update. The laptop ran Tiger great without the firmware. After I got the laptop, I installed OS 9 using the original laptop CDs, updated to 9.2.2 and downloaded the firmware update. Then I booted the laptop using 9.2.2 and updated the firmware. It's possible you can do the same on the G4. The way you described may also work.
Looking at Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 you need version 4.2.8. Look at the Read Me file for this update.
The G5 system will not work on the G4. And the apps on the G5 may or may not run on 10.0.4.

Make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop.
Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available.
Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
If there's sufficient disk space, the startup disk may need repairing.
Launch Disk Utility located in /Applications/Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
You will need your install disc if the startup disk needs repairing.

Generation 1 virtual machines cannot boot from the virtual SCSI chain and 2012 does not support Generation 2 VMs. There is no meaningful performance difference between the virtual IDE and SCSI controllers anyway.

How can I STOP Firefox from being a glutton with my virtual memory?

Yes. But, I see from the THOUSANDS of responses here concerning Firefox memory issues that other people have had no more success than I have at trying to STOP Firefox's memory gluttony. The fact that Firefox runs fine (like the good old days) for a while after re-booting and registry cleaning shows that something is going on beyond the trivial/ineffective suggestions offered in the referenced links.
Having to re-boot several times a day to get Firefox out of the molasses is such a pain, that it's no wonder people are going back to IE, or like me, reluctantly relying more and more on Google Chrome.
