Virtual PC 7 and Hebrew software

Will Virtual PC 7 allow me to use Hebrew software, i.e. Dagesh Pro, on my Mac OSX?

Virtual PC will not work on your MacBook Pro.
Parallels or Boot Camp will allow you to run Windows on your MacBook Pro.
So long as you can run Windows, you should be able to run most Windows software.
Hope this helps! bill

  • SAP client and other software on a Virtual Machine

I'm the campus coordinator for a university that is a member of the University Alliances program.  This gives us the ability to put the R/3 client and other software on lab machines and also distribute it to students.
Given that we deploy in a shared lab environment on a university campus we often don't have absolute control over things like browser versions, plugins available, security settings, Java version available, and so on.  We also only have the ability to do updates, installations, etc. at fixed times of the year.
As a solution for this, we're contemplating creating a virtual machine to be able to control the environment more and also allow the student greater control and customization.  At this point we'd be looking at developing a Windows VM, either Vista or XP, that would have the R/3 client, IE with all the correct plugins for running Visual Composer, NetWeaver Developer Studio, and other programs such as Solution Composer.  The idea would be that if we need to add a new software resource, change a version, tweak the environment, etc. we could just update and redistribute this virtual machine.
Has anyone here attempted this type of deployment?  As we are just beginning, any helpful hints or advice would be appreciated.

I appreciate your willingness to think through this with me and share your expertise.

    > Why do you think so? The "key" you use during installation is bound to a medium. We also have a license that allows us to fully automatically install Windows XP on our client PCs using Empirum and also install all other necessary software (IE updates, SAPGUI, Adobe SVG, Microsoft Office etc.)
My assumption was that if we had multiple windows instances out there all with the same key (assuming non-volume key) that the piracy protection built into the OS might in some way cause problems.
    > (Perhaps not.  We're still considering the ins and outs of that.)  We're hesitant to put our campus volume license key on these VMs, since one could recover that key from the system and then it could become publicly available.  Clearly that would be bad.
    >
    > That may be not a problem because those keys "usually" work only with the corresponding media - people would need to get their hands on a coorporate installation media to actually use it.
I'm not sure how challenging that in fact might be.  A quick Google search turned up lots of sites that at least claim to have Windows volume keys and necessary install media.  I know that college students can be very adept at things in that domain.
    > The biggest problem you might face is the UUID of the client instances - they will be identical. If you plan to use Active Directory functionality (for e. g. Single Sign On) then you need to make sure each VM is different (speaking of running sysprep) and that you have a different user on each VM - which will be not easy to mantain.
If I'm understanding your thought correctly, the UUID issue is why I thought attempting 1 shared OS license key for all VMs would be problematic.  My assumption is that having a unique OS key on each VM would solve this problem.
As far Active Directory goes, that likely won't be an issue. Our students have storage on the campus network, but we have no plans for the VM to access that.  All our SAP resources are hosted remotely at a UCC.  I envision the students being able to 'boot' their VM, connect to the UCC using the client software, do their SAP work, and be done.  The only storage they'd have in the VM would be a drive in the VM.  While this might not work in many deployments, given our use of this just for lab instruction, I think it would work well.
    > Another point to consider is: How to update? If you update your main image (e. g. necessary SAPGUI patches) - how will you distribute that to the USB-VMs - or how will you make sure the students use the latest copy?
This is where our situation and a corporate situation likely differs.  Since we are hosted by a UCC that caters just to the academic environment things tend to be build and frozen during the summer and then not changed until the next year.  Our classes run each semester independently.  Although we may have to roll out a different VM from one semester to the next, a mid-semester change shouldn't be needed.  However, having said that, if we do need to install a patch, that should be much easier.  In a lab shared environment updating a software version requires a lot of coordination.  In this VM situation, each students has full administrator privilege over their VM.  If they need to install a patch, they can do so.  If they mess this up, they haven't disrupted anyone else.  In that instance they could just download the base VM again as a 'reset.'
    > In such an environment I'd more think about setting up a terminal server (using Windows 2003) and install all necessary software there. With that you only need to update at one place, you can granularily give permissions to the users and supporting users in case of a proble is easier (mirroring the session) than having single instances with all the same hostname of the client. And all students only need an RDP client which comes with the Windows XP or Vista by default.
That is something we haven't considered with this project, and I'll have to check with our system manager.  Resources might be an issue here.  We have an abundance of PCs, so each of them running their own VM isn't an issue.  I'm not sure if we have a server capable of supporting 30-40 simultaneous remote connections that is not otherwise in use.
Thanks for your ideas here Markus.  Any other thoughts, ideas, etc. are most welcome.  I'll also update this thread as I start experimenting with this over the next couple of weeks.

  • Creating a Master virtual hard disk and using the same for all other VM's

    Hi,
We would like to create a master virtual hard disk and use the same for all other VM's. Can we do that ?
    my requirements :
    1) create 10 VM's
    2) first create a master virtual hard disk with win OS and use the same to create the 10 VM's.
    3) After creating the VM's change the HDD size.
-- if i have created master virtual disk with 500GB , and use the same for creating a virtual machine. can we change the HDD size to 1TB ?
After creating the VM's ,i will change the system names and activate the windows accordingly.
Will there be any implications ,if we can/will do like this.
    Thanks.

Here is a post I recently assembled for another similar question:
With the newer Intel Macs, you have to run a Classic emulator such as SheepShaver, which requires you to extract the Mac ROMs from your older Classic Mac and then install Mac OS 9.
A related program is Chubby Bunny, which comes bundled with all of that included (google the term "Classic-On-Intel v 4.0.1 chubby bunny").

  • Help configuring Audition with Virtual  Audio Cable and Skype

I'm using the latest version of Audition, along with Virtual Audio Cable and Skype for my PC (Windows 7).  While I'm able to properly configure my own microphone (Edirol UA-25), to be captured by Audition on track 1, I can't seem to get track 2 configured properly to capture and record.
I seem to be missing a step.
Is there anyone that can help me properly configure or offer an alternative that will allow me to record my microphone and the Skype call on two separate tracks?
Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Others may have made it work but I've never persuaded Audition to record a mic in one channel and line out (Skype) in the other.  Since Audition it designed to work with a single ASIO audio interface, this makes sense.
My solution is to use a little utility called the iFree Skype recorder:  Record Skype Calls with iFree Skype Recorder - Your FREE Skype call recorder software
It works well for me, keeping the outgoing part of the call and the incoming separate for easy editing later.  It works fine with an external audio interface and good mic as long as Skype is set up to work that way.
The only drawback is that it records in MP3 not wave but, given the quality of most Skype calls, this isn't really a deal breaker.

  • •  How can I correctly recuperate/extract Arabic, Chinese and Hebrew text?

    Hello -
    Context:
As a packaging designer, my clients are often requesting that we add Arabic, Chinese and Hebrew texts on packaging.
More often than not, I receive 4 different types of text sources :
    —  1.
A .PDF containing a scan of the text needed (so nothing more than a picture).
    —  2.
A .PDF whereby I can select the text and copy it into MS Word® but the sentence is no longer the same as what I had copied from the .PDF file! (e.g. some of the characters are replaced by strange ones).
    —  3.
A .PDF file where the client has inserted an annotation which displays correctly in the Acrobat® but the moment that I do a copy/paste into MS Word®, the whole sentence is inversed (text appearing left to right instead of right to left -> For Arabic).
    —  4.
Sometimes I also receive Excel® files.
After copying the text into MS Word®, I save the file in .PDF format and I then re-open it in Adobe Illustrator®.
    Softwares:
              • Adobe® CS5 (Illustrator,...)
              • MS Office® 2011
              • Mac OS 10.6.8
    Question:
Is there an easier, faster and more reliable method to extract such "exotic" text?
e.g. a plug-in, another software, another method (instead of having to pass through MS Word®, ...)
Thank you for your precious help.
    Have anice day…
    - Dimitri

Not really. It's inherent in dealing with this stuff on non-native systems. Your issues 2. and 3. Should be fixable by manually setting the document language in Word, though. Same for 4. then, of course, assuming the PDFs and comments use a standard Unicode/ OpenType font that can provide al lthe glyphs and no otehr substitution is going on....

  • Parallels and AV software

Buying my wife an imac today, her pc finally died. She will need to run Parallels for her work (Quickbooks & Quicken). I assume for the windows side she will need anti virus. Is this correct?
Also, should I partition the external HD, one for OSX, one for windows ?. How does time machine handle this situation ?.
    Thanks,
    Dave

You need anti-malware software if you're going to use Windows, without exception.
You have two option for running Windows on the Mac: Boot Camp (comes with OS X) or a virtual machine (there are two leading products: VMWare and Parallels). They are different.
If you use Boot Camp, you'll need to set aside a separate partition for installing Windows. It works by permitting you to decide *at boot time* which OS you are going to run. That OS is the only OS running, and it has direct access to all of the machine's resources.
If you select a virtual machine solution (VMWare or Parallels), the "host" operating system will be OS X and the "guest" will Windows/Linux/Whatever (in your case, Windows). You will be, effectively, running both operating systems at once, though both VMWare and Parallels permit you to view an application window standalone without the Windows desktop, so it can very much look like you are only using OS X. Virtual machines don't require their own disk partition (I'm not even sure that Parallels supports it). It's more common to permit a virtual machine to use a sparse disk (e.g., you configure the VM to have a certain amount of disk space, but it doesn't actually take that much space until it's used). It's also common to have several VMs for different purposes -- perhaps a VM that has nothing but Quickbooks, and another one for unrelated applications. It's good to have a good external HD to save backup copies of your VM and periodically backup the whole VM. That said, it's also possible for the VM to access the OS X disk and write files to OS X disks directly. For example, you could run Quickbooks in Windows, but have the data files stored outside the VM on the Mac (where you could make periodic backups, archive off-site, etc.).
Time Machine only pays attention to OS X partitions, and by default it doesn't backup external drives. You can go into the TM preferences and permit it to backup external disks. TM backs up versions of files. You generally don't want it to do that for a whole VM since the VM contains an image of the VM's virtual disk, memory, and virtual hardware state -- which is really big and if TM saved every version of that the TM drive would fill up very fast. It's most common to put the VM into Time Machine's exclude list to exclude it from TM backup. Typically, if you wanted to save versions of files, you'd save those files from the VM to the Mac disk (not the VM's virtual disk) and treat them as any other OS X file. You'd also typically backup the VM itself separately, say using Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner (both actually just a graphical front-end to the 'rsync' program you can use from the Terminal), to keep up to date a copy of the VM. You want to backup the VM while the VM is turned off. Alternatively, you can also install your own backup software in the Windows VM and use that to backup particular files.
One thing about backing up Windows application data files outside of Windows. From time to time you'll notice that some Windows apps save metadata about files in the registry or elsewhere in the Windows filesystem. If this is the case, and you restore those files from a backup, the application might recognize that they are not the files that it thinks they are. It's generally not a problem (but the problem exists whether you are backing up and restoring in a normal Windows environment too, it's simply a Windows platform quirk, but one you should be aware of).

If you did not get an OS X install-restore DVD with the computer you may need
to buy one from somewhere, and you may be lucky to get a retail OS X 10.5.x
version. The original grey-label install set of software and OS X it shipped with
likely would be an older system than Leopard 10.5. Last versions of G4 Mac, &
G5, shipped with a Tiger 10.4 system; so did early Intel-based Mac. Grey discs
which accompanied other computer build models generally do not interchange.
The last OS X version a PowerPC architecture can use, if supported, is 10.5.8.
A PPC processor at 867MHz & faster should be able to run OS X 10.5 Leopard.
{With the correct disc installer, you can use it to change a password and other
    things including re-install, and perform disk utility functions, etc.}
There is a chance you may be able to get a white-label Replacement 10.4 DVD
or Replacement 10.5 DVD from AppleCare or the online Apple Store (800myapple)
from a Mac OS X system specialist; these have been available yet hard to get
as not all persons involved with them seem to know if they still exist until someone
is asking. These aren't retail stock, are special discs for computers who could use
a system later than original old discs; these are complete install discs not for one
specific series of Mac. Generally they'd work in supported PowerPC G4/G5; but
do not replace specialized original install DVD, such as an early Intel mac requires.
You'd need to have a serial number of the computer, and a method of payment
when seeking some replacement system media from Applecare or Apple sales
and these discs are not available in a retail store. The original Retail discs are
labeled differently and shipped in a retail box with a big X on the front. Other
sources for retail 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard may be online via amazon sellers
or computer resellers who handle repaired Macs. Avoid mystery grey label ones
that were intended to be sold and kept with their original computer kits.
    Good luck!

  • Pages 09 and Hebrew

I am a student at a bilingual school where English and Hebrew are taught. I have work to do in hebrew, and using Pages or Keynote with the hebrew is HORRIBLE. Once you type in hebrew into pages, you cannot see the cursor in between letters! You can only click where you want the cursor, then navigate between the letters using the keyboard arrows, still not being able to see where the cursor is until you actually start typing. THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!! It is insanely time consuming as well. If I try to export the document to a PC, all of the words and punctuation are scrambled into an illegible mess!!!! Most frustrating of all, there is no email address to contact Apple about this type of problem. Could someone please tell me if there is anything I can do about this, or did I waste my money not buying Microsoft Office for Mac?

I can not even navigate between characters; it only allows me to be at the beginning or end of the text. Have you a solution for this?
If you click your mouse at a place in the text, I think you will find the insertion point is one character to the right (or something like that), even though the cursor has not moved.
In my view it is really pointless to try to use iWork (or iWeb) for RTL text, their bugs just make them unsuitable for this purpose. Use apps like Mellel, OpenOffice, Nisus Writer which do not have these problems.
