Virtual QWERTY vs. Touchscreen

In the online Verizon comparison chart of the two new Windows 8 phones keyboards, the 8X has "Virtual QWERTY" and the Nokia is "Touchscreen".  What is the difference?

They are one and the same, just marketing speak

I have use the API for facebook and goes OK, and i also implement a virtual qwerty for writting into the aplication textInputs, but i want to mix both.
I mean, i would be very grateful if someone knows how to add to the loginWindow (thats appear when use the login method of facebook) a qwerty that can write into the fields.
    Thanks in advance!!!

  • Why the N97 dont have a virtual qwerty keyboard?

    *in the sub*
somebody knows if or when the qwerty keyboard comeback? its very missing
Message Edited by liorx_o on 27-Aug-2009 08:44 PM
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The obvious answer is that the designers removed it due to the N97 having a hardware keyboard. The other touch phones that have this software keyboard don't have a hardware keyboard.
It would be good to have the choice though.  No one can tell you if or when it will ever appear on the N97.
All you can do is wait and hope that it makes an appearance in a future update.

  • Need mini-qwerty for 5230

I've seen mini-qwerty keyboard on 5800 and was disappointed to find it missing on my 5230. Is there any way to get mini-qwerty keyboard on 5230.
Both full-qwerty and number-pad keyboards are full screen and I'm looking for a solution that takes half or less screen for typing (like mini-qwerty).
On a separate note, is it possible to get original light color themes for Nokia 5230. I've a black handset and all preinstalled themes are dark while my friend's white handset have all light themes.
    Nokia veterans, please help me.
    Regards.

    NO, but
Nearest thing I can suggest is try the Opera browser, it has full virtual qwerty and try here for themes

  • Nokia offers free download for Symbian Anna

Symbian Anna – the latest software update for Nokia’s Symbian smartphones – is now available for download in the Philippines.
Symbian Anna significantly enhances the user experience on the Nokia N8, Nokia C7, Nokia C6-01 and Nokia E7. A new user interface, virtual QWERTY keypad in portrait mode, split-screen messaging, enhanced Nokia Maps, better web browsing and stronger security are just a few of the improvements that people will be able to enjoy. Symbian Anna can be downloaded using the latest version of Ovi Suite (version 3.1.1) on a PC, or over-the-air directly to your smartphone.
"Nokia’s Symbian smartphones are used by millions of people around the world every day, addressing specific consumer needs and providing choices at many price points," said Mike Smith, Device Portfolio Manager, Nokia Philippines. "Symbian Anna represents a significant update to the experience of those users. It also demonstrates our ongoing commitment to Symbian, which still headlines the next 10 phones that Nokia will introduce over the next 12 months. Moreover, it signifies our thrust to continuously bring updates to the user experience and support for the software until at least 2016."
Below are some of the key features of the Symbian Anna:
New user interface: Symbian Anna brings a fresh new look and feel to the Nokia N8, Nokia C7, Nokia C6-01 and Nokia E7 with crisp icons and multiple usability enhancements. Typing on the touchscreen is much easier with a split screen, so you can see message threads, webpages, contacts or email view while typing on the virtual QWERTY keypad – now also available in portrait mode.
Better maps and navigation: Symbian Anna enhances Nokia Maps with better search functionality, new public transportation routes and the ability to check-in to favorite geo-social network sites like Facebook, Foursquare and Twitter. Users can also share their location via email and SMS, even to non-Nokia phones.
Faster browsing experience: A faster, easier-to-use browser delivering quicker page loads and improved device navigation allows people to connect more easily to their favorite sites on the go.
Stronger security for better business: Symbian Anna brings true business-grade security with improved data encryption on Nokia smartphones. • Question about Android

This is not a bashing of adobe's software. I want to use Adobe's dps software to publish to Android tablets, but it is too expensive and I can not host the files myself. I also like the features that Adobe gives. I looked at this software called Mag+ and it is a one time fee for your publications and you can host the files yourself. Is there a reason Adobe is not able to adopt this pricing system for Android?

If you really want a smart phone, you won't be able to get one without touchscreen. Many apps are written to take advantage of this technology.
Sounds like you've had bad luck with devices, but touch tech isn't bad at all...if you get the right phone. If you can get to a Verizon store, try playing with the Droid 2 and the Droid X...and possibly the Samsung Fascinate--though whatever anyone tells you, AVOID HTC products unless you enjoy hardware failures and companies who ignore software bugs. Of these phones, only the Droid 2 will offer you much in the way of minimizing touch screen use--it has a full keyboard, which can also be used to activate shortcuts to launch certain apps. The keyboard is why I chose the D2 over the DX, and I've ended up rarely using it!
Also keep in mind that while typing on a touch screen has been awkward in the past, the Motorola Droid 2 and Droid X both come with software that enhance the typing experience: SWYPE. You have to switch to SWYPE input from the default virtual keyboard, and it takes a little while to get used to...but it makes typing on a touch screen a whole lot more accurate. I like describing it to my friends as T9 for a virtual QWERTY keyboard. Here's a video tutorial on SWYPE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnQts9NUnL4 It's pretty intuitive, and makes touch QWERTY usable.

  • My personal gripes with the N8

Hi guys. I've owned my N8 for around 2 months now, and having used it extensively, I just wanted to share my own gripes with this device.
The N8 is Nokia's flagship device. The device that was supposed to rejuvenate Nokia's ever declining stance in the smartphone arena. Delayed multiple times until released just a few short months ago. Like most of you guys here, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this smartphone and the constant delays were killing me. I've always been really fond of Nokia and Symbian, ever since owning an N-Gage many years ago. Nokia have always been ahead of the times, and knew that phones were far more capable than just making calls. I've owned many smartphones from most all manufacturers but always seem to find my way back to Symbian.
So with the ongoing delay of the N8, I was thinking to myself because they're taking so long to iron out all of the problems, it's going to be amazing! And so I thought when I first opened the box. But as time has gone by, like all of the Symbian devices I've owned, I've just found more and more about this device to complain about than to actually enjoy.
First let me start with the marketing campaign for this device. It was nice to see the N8 being heavily marketed. It was on almost every billboard I could see, every bus stop I could see, and in most every magazine and newspaper. But then I saw the TV adverts once the device was released..... they sucked. They had barely any emphasis on what the phone could actually do in everyday use, or even how to do it. It had a general emphasis on what people could do with their smartphones. It was a mediocre attempt and they sure didn't draw my attention to the N8. It was as if Nokia was saying "Hey, we've released this new smartphone called the N8.... now look what you can do with phones these days". Anyway, on to the phone itself....
    The Hardware
I have hardly any complaints about the hardware. The phone looks fantastic and feels great in the hand. The screen is crisp, vivid and looks outstanding (one of the best I've seen on a mobile device). The gorilla glass really does live up to its name. The device is solidly built, as usual Nokia style. Buttons are well placed (with the exception of the menu button, which I would have preferred to be in the centre. It's not so great pressing the menu button left-handed with your thumb). The addition of HDMI and USB OTG make for a powerful and feature-rich device. I can't say any more about the camera than what's already been said. It's the best, and it lives up to the hype. My only other minor niggle apart from the menu button is the non-replaceable battery, but it's not really much of an issue considering the build style of the device. I suppose it makes more sense having it the way it is. The only major problem I can think of is its underpowered processor, which means further software optimisation, which means more time is wasted. If applications are developed for other platforms that have better processors, that means developers have to spend more time optimising their software for less powered hardware, which ultimately means shoddy ports. A prime example being Asphalt 5.
    The Symbian^3 OS
Now this is where it starts to become fun. After reading and watching many reviews, I had a brief idea of what to expect. The OS didn't look perfect, but it looked like a big improvement from S60 v5, and already being fond of Nokia and Symbian, I decided to take the plunge and give this device the chance I thought it deserved.
    Inconsistent UI
The user interface is extremely inconsistent. The clock, connectivity and notifications jump from the top of the screen to the bottom on screen rotation, and the clock doesn't appear at all on the homescreen except via a widget. Furthermore, there are 3 buttons on the homescreen at the bottom, but 2 in the menus. There are 3 when you rotate the screen. It looks a mess.
The notification bar at the top of the screen is fairly slim on the homescreen, but increases in size in the menus and applications. Why can't it stay the same size throughout?
Screen real-estate - When in the calendar, in text messages, in most applications.... most of the screen real estate is consumed by the large notification bar at the top, and 2 layers of buttons at the bottom, altogether consuming about 1/3 of the screen's real estate.
Kinetic scrolling - When browsing the Ovi store, the kinetic scrolling is as smooth as butter. As is the photo album, it scrolls through like a dream. Absolutely nothing to complain about in that respect. But in other places such as contacts, text messages, the web browser and Social Networking client, KS can be very choppy. Why is this? Why can't they use the same KS algorithm throughout the device? Is there a lack of communication at Symbian/Nokia?
Text messages consist of a tone, and an on-screen notification which is non-obtrusive and is very well done. Mail notifications consist of a tone, and that's it. No on-screen notification. Why couldn't this be integrated the same way as text messages?
The ability to click the camera button to view a search bar in the file manager was a great idea. Why couldn't this have been implemented throughout the OS?
Integrated applications such as the Ovi Store and Social Networks client have their own themes which change the colour of the menu buttons. Why? Why not leave them the same colour as the theme you have chosen? It means that the application has to consume more time and resources changing the theme.
Most menus will draw up from the bottom of the screen to display options, but then you have menus like the Ovi store which display in the centre.
When scrolling though album arts in the Music Player, why is there a full screen button which shows menu buttons that don't even get in the way? It's not necessary. Furthermore, why are the menu buttons not in big boxes like everywhere else in the OS?
The homescreen you have chosen is the active one. The others seem to stay in some sort of freeze-state until you scroll to them, which means widgets don't update until you select the home screen they're on. This is stupid.
The menu buttons at the bottom change in size depending on screen orientation. They're a little slimmer in landscape mode.
There are probably many more inconsistencies to be found, but all-in-all, they make the OS feel unprofessional, user-unfriendly, and generally a frustrating experience having to jump all around the screen to access the same thing dependent upon where you are in the phone.
    Unresponsiveness
As already mentioned, the Ovi Store's KS is very smooth, but then you have the top and menu buttons which can become unresponsive and can take multiple presses for them to respond. This seems to be a recurring theme throughout the entire device.
Screen rotation can be a pain. It just feels as though there is some sort of struggle to rotate the screen. It's not fluid, and there's a minor delay.
Typing on the keypad can be also be a pain. Using regular text entry, there's no auto-correction, no space between keys, and just no improvement from its predecessor. It looks aged and can be a struggle to use with even fairly small fingers. Not forgetting the fact that text entry consumes the entire screen.
Sometimes, when just locking and unlocking the device, it feels as though there's some delay. Sometimes I'll have to do it multiple times for it to respond.
There's absolutely no excuse for this unresponsiveness. It existed in S60 v5, and still exists to this day. The N8 was delayed long enough for all of this to have been straightened out. A massive let down.
    Bugs and crashing
A few days ago I was playing around with my N8. I went to lock the device, but the screen refused to turn itself off. I restarted my phone multiple times but to no avail. After about 15 minutes it decided I was frustrated enough and turned itself off.
The web browser still does the same as it has always done on Symbian. It just randomly closes. I don't want to go too much into the browser since there is an update due, but this is now, and this is what we have now. But this also seems to be a recurring theme throughout the device. There are many applications that will just randomly close.
My N8 has automatically restarted itself a few times since I've owned it. Sometimes it feels like it's running slow, and a restart usually cures it. However that just leads me to believe there's some sort of memory leak, or poor memory management in the Symbian OS.
Again, absolutely unacceptable, for the same reasons I've mentioned. Except these problems are more frustrating when taking into consideration how much time Nokia have had to straighten all of this out, and the seriousness of these flaws.
    Lack of interest
The Ovi store simply sucks. There are no two ways about it. Developer support is abysmal. There are a few good games on there, of which most are pooly ported. It feels as if the Ovi Store has stagnated, for example, I've seen just 2 Web TV applications added since I've owned the phone. Everytime I visit the Ovi Store it feels as if I see nothing new, just rehashes of the same old applications found on S60 v5.
Symbian doesn't have that "Ooooooh" factor. I previously owned a Palm Pre, and the UI just blew my mind. It's outstanding. Symbian just doesn't have that.
When I show my friends my phone, they like it, but nothing about it makes them want to run to the store and buy one. There's nothing about the user experience that's unique, or done well enough for people to feel they could spend long periods of time using.
Nokia apparently had 400,000 new developers jump on board over the past year. Then where on earth are they?
    Conclusion
People might think that I'm just nitpicking, but having paid outright for this device, with the ongoing delays, and with the ever increasing and bettering competition, I feel that I have the right to complain.
I acknowledge that no device is perfect, but if even half of the problems I've listed didn't exist, I'd accept the device for what it is. I know that improvements are on their way, but why should we wait any longer? We waited long enough for the phone to be released, let alone wait longer for it to be of the same standard that competing smartphones were at 12 months ago. Symbian itself is many years old. Nokia should be masters at it, yet every time a new phone is released, the OS feels extremely immature.
Nokia's development roadmap might as well not exist. They are extremely unreliable with release dates. Their development takes far too long. They're falling further and further behind.
Most of the time, I find myself just constantly checking the device updates, in hope of something. I'm sure many of you guys do that too. That's a bad sign. It just shows that what's already in place is not adequate. We want more. We deserve more. We should have had more when the device was released.
The emphasis of this phone seems to be solely on the camera, USB OTG, Bluetooth 3.0 and HDMI. If I wanted a feature phone I wouldn't have paid half of what I paid for this phone. A smartphone needs to add more to the table than solely features. If the UX was improved, I'd be happy to sacrifice any of the mentioned features. The UI is something I use every day - USB OTG is something I've used once.
My personal opinion and credibility of Nokia is forever declining. The market seems to feel that way too. Time is ticking. The competition is becoming more dominant, making it harder to break into an already over-saturated market. The market seems to be shifting to tablets. Nokia can't even get their phone OS right, let alone think about releasing a tablet. Another potential market that Nokia will struggle to enter if they so desire.
If the next update doesn't iron out most of these problems, I'm going to be getting rid of my N8. I wouldn't recommend this device to the average consumer. There are better alternatives out there.

Actually, I'm sorry to say that what I've highlighted in bold there is exactly the words that occurred to me when I was reading your entire section entitled "Inconsistant UI" - absolutely none of what you raise in there is a bug. It is natural that the screen usage varies according the the activity currently being undertaken and screen orientation. Most people who have criticised the home screen are upset that it isn't as customisable as they'd like - you are the only person I've suggesting it should be much more strictly regimented.
I've used S^3 in N8 and C7 models, and I haven't noticed the issues that you describe with scrolling and rotating.
The Ovi Store UI being different is not an issue with the phone, it is something that is increasingly common in many Nokias - Nokia seem to have divided their development of devices and services into two separate organisations, which is why the separate services (Ovi Store apps for all phones are created by the Ovi people, not the same ones who design the phone UI); so where they really ought to be issuing the direction to stay in line is in the Ovi department. As for this app changing the theme, it doesn't - it simply has (for better or for worse) its own UI distinct fromp the phones, just as any software written for a PC may have its own look-and-feel distinct from the PC's OS.

I'm no fan of virtual qwerty (or in my usual case azerty) keyboards on touch-screen phones because I have never yet found any that I really like to use.
One issue that I do have here is that the availability of accented characters varies according to the phone language, which isn't very helpful to those of us who have cause to write in several languages. I much prefer to type on portrait mode on the traditional phone keypad, because you always have access to all accented and special characters. I have even been able to type messages using the portrait keypad quicker than I can using a normal physical keypad, which impressed me a lot.
I've been using N8 and C7 models through work, I have just got my own N8 which I bought whilst travelling because it is still quite hard to find (and therefore more expensive than it needs to be) in my own country - consequently I don't even have one of my two primary languages in the phone, but whist I can't access some necessary characters at all through the landscape qwerty I can get absolutely everything in the portrait keypad. Definitely room for some improvement there.

This is a consequence of the fact that Nokia is in the midst of a change in OS support, S60 will (I imagine) not be much longer for this world as S^3 is phased in, and Maemo development stalled when Nokia got into bed with Intel to develop MeeGo (which would otherwise have been Maemo 6) which still hasn't made it to the market. These delays getting the new operating system established is affecting app development because the developers are caught in a catch-22 whereby there is no point developing extensively for the 'almost obsolete' S60 and Maemo 5, but there isn't likewise much to gain in developing for S^3 or MeeGo because one is only just launched and one not even here yet. None of  this is a fault of the N8, and unlike certain fruit-flavoured devices we would mention, with the N8 at least you have the choice to shop for apps elsewhere.

  • Nokia E7-00. Angry customer's request.

Hi all, First of all I want to tell - I'm real fan of Nokia products (more than 10 years of experience - from 8210 to 5800 models), but last 3 years the only one thing that I've receiving for my money - QUALITY PROBLEMS.
Some hours earlier I came back from Mega Mall (Russia, Moscow, Belaya Dacha, Official Nokia store) where I had tried to receive any additional information from salesmen - no result. One of salesmen told me: "Right now you have the unique chance to make an exclusive deal - you should buy the Nokia e7-00!". When I asked him the questions (listed below) he told me - "I even have no idea who can provide to you this kind of information about E7-00. Buy or not, but don't ask me about this sh..t. If you will not buy this phone, tomorrow someone else will come and buy it". Very nice ... I think that if Nokia Corp. has this kind of salesmen - I can't be the Nokia customer more - I hate unskilled sales.
The main goal of my letter is to show to you what exactly customer needs (of course, I talking about myself). The second - to show to you how the loyal customer becomes angry. You no need to spend a lot of money for marketing or advertisement purposes - just read and understand.
Before my finally decision (right now I'm choosing between Nokia E7-00 and Samsung Galaxy S2) I want to get some clarifications from the 'first hands'. Kindly asking you to answer asap (I've already pre-ordered both devices).
    1. Does Nokia E7-00 works with MS Office 2007 formats (operating with docx, xlsx, pptx types)?
    2. Is there any analogue of the Layar Extended Reality (for Android platform) for Nokia E7-00 exists?
    3. How long and what is the (approximated) number of the programs that were planned to develop for Nokia E7-00 for the next years? (I've read about Nokia and Microsoft plans and I'm not happy about it. I do not want to buy "expensive brand-new device without any future").
    4. "Usb on the go" - can I plug any external storage devices (not usb-flashstick, e.g. WD Passport, SSD-type external drives, etc.)
    5. Wi-Fi issue - can I use any additional functions e.g. sharing multimedia files to any devices in local Wi-Fi network without Internet, sending photos to printer via Wi-Fi, etc.
    6. Is there any analogue of Remote desktop (see please http://www.appbrain.com/app/remote-desktop/pl.androiddev.mobiletab )?
    7. How can I get more information about pre-installed browser? About its' functions (I'm not happy to use pre-installed browser at my 5800 XM and installed Opera).
    8. How can I get more information about pre-installed e-mail client? Is it still "cutting" 'Sender' and 'Subject' fields till showing it? I have terrible experience with my old Nokia 5800 XM - for understanding about 'sender' I had to open each message. I wishing to developers long life and using only that type of e-mail clients or similar all lifelong. I'll prefer similar with iPhone or Samsung Galaxy.
    9. What about autofocus function of the cameras? From time to time I need to make a photo of document and send it. If autofocus is not available - just wondering - why you are making HD-camera and do not provide - 'old' and more habitually function? But I'm still happy that Nokia Corp.do not providing B&W HD-camera solution))).
    10. Can E7-00 phone download all e-mail attachments without long and boring procedure (for example - in my Nokia 5800 XM I should to receive e-mail, load list of attachments, after that choose and load each file separately (one-by-one). My "best wishes" to the Nokia's developers again.
    11. Is Skype is already pre-installed? If so, what about video-conference calls supporting? Could I change view between frontal and main cameras?
    12. How many buttons I should press or actions to make for changing keyboard language (from English to Russian for example)?
    13. What extension of video-files and multimedia content E7-00 is ready to playback? What it's maximal size? Could I install any additional codecs? If so - what it's names?
    14. How long time the voice-recorder can works? As I remember (my own experience) - at my last E-series Nokia phone was an restriction - no more than 1 minute (even I have enough free disk space).
    15. Does E7 has a virtual qwerty-keyboard ? (I'm not happy about "traditional solution" of your company - from released phone model to released phone model you are making keyboard design with two Russian letters at the one button) - please take a look at the traditional Russian qwerty keyboards - we are not from China or Japan - we haven't so much letters. If E7 have the virtual qwerty - is it works on vertical mode or not? FYI - some of your latest firmware for Nokia 5800 XM made 'unintelligent' changes with this issue.
    16. Does E7 supports Microsoft Silverlight? If not - do you planning this issue to do?
    17. Does E7 have an FM-transmitter (for transmitting music to car audio system)? I read that it was planned. But now - no one can answer me.
    18. Why Nokia Corp does not provides proper and full information about own products (even to dealers)? For example - I spent a lof of time to find information that for E7 you still using same ARM11 (ARMv6) as it was used for my old 5800 XM.
I believe this short letter will help you to create a great products again and again and your products will satisfy lot of customers (of course including myself).
Waiting for your answer. Best regards.

    UPDATE:
After phone conversation with Nokia Care  Center (8 800 700 22 22) I've got the answers:
    1. File types docx, xlsx, pptx are supported by pre-installed commercial software QuickOffice (it’s already included to the price).
    2.  There is no information about analogues of Layar reality.
    3. Official comment: Symbian is alive))) But there is no analytics or even suggestions about growing OVI store or software for Symbian.
    4. USB-ON-THE-GO is only for USB flash. External drives that uses more than 200 mAh are not supports. (Remark for the future – I should control my imagination)) )
    5. UPnP is not supported (sad but true)
    6. No Remote Desktop, but there is an additional service - similar to dropbox.com.
    7. Pre-installed (native) browser is the same one – no additional functions or features. (looks like step back)
    8. E-mail client is still cuts “Sender” and “Subject” fields – my best wishes to developers.
    9. No Autofocus – great job, guys. Focus length from 50 cm up to infinity. Bravo!
    10. Information about possibility of downloading all attachements by one click is still in progress. I really surprised – Nokia Care hotline operator spent more than 2 hours to find the information about company's own product.
    11. There is no preinstalled Skype, but if you still want to install it – forget about video calls.
    12. Press Shift+Sim for changing language. Good news (I’m seriously).
    13. For avi files playback user should install the codecs. There is restriction of file size only cause device using FAT32.
    14. Maximal voice-record length is 1 hour
    15. Horizontal QWERTY keeps its position after rotating.
    16. Microsoft Silverlight temporary is not supported.
    17. There is no built-in FM-transmitter. Do you still want to create iPhone-killer? I don't think so.
    18. Nokia E7 has the same processor architecture ARM11 (ARMv6) as it was used for old Nokia 5800 XM.

Just for a change can i praise the N97 while I understand some users frustrations can I just add this is not every N97 user. I have owned many phones and gadgets over the years from N70,N80,N95 Iphones Archos and Ipods
and to be honest I think the N97 is the best yet
Things i'm loving most about the N97
1.The memory 32gb = lots of movies and music makling it a one gadget in your pocket
by the way if you use dvdvideosoft video to ipod convertor on the ipod highest quality setting it gives great video files supported by N97 and its freeware
2.the radio transmitter fab with the ipod and iphone this you have to pay extra for
    3.the internet access is great
    4.iplayer with download
only bug on this is sometimes the download option isnt there
but ive found if you restart the phone the next time it is
5.camera is good as it was on the N95 its down to the lens not the MP
    6.widget options are good
    My wishlist for the N97
1.coverflow or something like it for the music player
2.N gage games I believe this is happening in september
3.The picture gallery to be fixed as for some reason the download picture
file only updates when phone restarted and for some reason you cant delete from this file via the phone
    only from mass storage
overall though am a very happy N97 user like all technology sometimes you have to learn to work withthe nuances and behaviours of a device compared to my early experiences with a spv its a breeze

Me too, me too!! And so you don't think I'm a teenage geek jumping up and down in excitement, I'm a geek in her 50s jumping up and down with excitement.
I've just been having coffee with a friend who was given an iPhone by his employer as a work phone. He doesn't like it much at all. One of the problems he finds is the mute button is often activated by his ear – I thought that was amusing! On the other hand, my daughter and her husband like their iPhones – but they also have a house full of Apple computers!
I love my N97 – I did a lot of research and weighed up three phones – the HTC Touch Pro 2 (I know someone who has got rid of his already and swapped to the N97), waiting for the Samsung Omnia i8000 or the N97. While the iPhone is perfect for many, many people it was never an option for me. Capacitive screen too restrictive, no multi-tasking, no FM radio, low grade camera, no flash, no personalisation to speak of. Above all else a phone has to fit the needs of the user and I was very clear on my needs.
I've not had mine for 2 weeks or anything, but I love it. The keyboard is perfect for a mobile phone (we use phone keyboards differently to PC keyboards), the touch screen is extremely accurate, it feels good to hold (as in comfortable), was dead easy to upgrade and personalise, and I've had no bugs. Call quality is excellent, my daughter's description was "just like a landline, maybe even better". The speakers (for music) are not 7.1 digital sourround sound, but this isn't a stereo system, it is a phone - and the quality can be improved by fiddling with the equaliser.
Now I just need to send Nokia my invoice for the advertising spiel, but I am really happy with it.
I've had a few Nokias, so I suppose I am used to the Nokia world, therefore easier for me to adapt.
Thinks I'd like to see: Fancier transitions, but I'm hopeful we will get the upgrade to Symbian 2 which looks great - a litle worried about the RAM required for Sym 2, but we shall see - they say we are compatible.
More useful apps - but that will come in time as developers get stuff happening.
A few odds and ends, mostly usability that I posted on the thread about the next release of firmware - some I've already found apps for, like auto-scheduling the profile changes. I'd like to see the virtual qwerty keyboard as was in early videos - handy for a quick SMS. Abiliy to edit contact detail labels (not sure where that disappeared to, was on my old phone).
Like fowler1969, I'm very happy I went with this phone.
I will say this: I have noticed quite a few posts here and in other forums where the "issues" were not phone issues, they were user issues. This is not a phone for someone who isn't a little technically literate. The phone can be highly personalised, therefore the user needs to know at least a little about the basic concepts of smartphones and computer technology generally. If a person doesn't know the difference between the C: drive and the E: drive, or understand that an internet connection is needed to get email, then possibly this is not the right phone. Don't buy this phone because you want the lastest and fanciest - but it because it fits YOUR particular needs.
Clearly some people have had some issues, but I do believe these are the exception rather than the rule.
I agree Nokia didn't test the firmware it was shipped with well enough before release.

  • [ N97 mini ] screen dead

    Hello.
I hope I'm in the right section.
    Here is the problem.
When I turn on the phone, the lights from the buttons on top, and QWERTY light up, the screen doesn't.
    I know for sure that:
Top buttons may work... They do the sound when I press them, same for QWERTY.
Touchscreen works (when I did hard reset... It vibrated when I touch it)...
When I connect it to the PC, the device is recognized
    What have I tried:
    Update software.
    Hard Reset.
But it didn't worked. Help please.

What you need to to is to take it to a Nokia care point for an inspection and repair.
We cannot help you with such issues here, and as you|ve updated your device and hard reset it, there isn't anything else you can do if the screen won't light up. For hardware faults only a Nokia care point can help you.
You can find your nearest care point here: http://europe.nokia.com/support/repair-and-recycle/repair/care-points

  • Help in choosing a good BB music phone

hi there! I currently own the Nokia E5-00 QWERTY phone and have been planning to replace it with a newer/better one. the reason is i want a either a QWERTY or touchscreen phone that will support my liking for music. what i mean is one that has customisable EQ settings, on-the-fly creation of Playlist (and changing a Playlist name as well) and maybe some built-in sound enhancment software like SRS audio or Dolby Mobile or if not a dedicated audio chip or some form of noise cancellation or something.
I know Nokia phones are good with audio sound output either with or without the earphones but are Blackberry phones any good as well? do they have some of the features wishlist i mentioned above?
    Please help....!
    Thanks.

BB is cool, it can do you any function, I listen to music on my 8900, music is synced with my iTunes so what I listen whilst seated I listen whilst moving around the house. Its great! The perfect gadget for someone always busy!

  • Droid vs. Blackberry

I need to upgrade and dont know, first of all Droid or Blackberry and then which one. Any thoughts? E-mail is most important feature to me

bb is superior when it comes to email. so if you aren't concerned with email, then a droid is the way to go. i have the incredible and would not trade it for any device on verizons network (i would take the EVO or samsing epic 4g....but can't handle other carriers). if you like a physical qwerty then the droid II is for you, but if you like the virtual qwerty then i personally prefer the X to the II. I also like the fact that the X has hdmi out. I wouldn't use that feature and prefer the smaller size of the incredible....but if you would ever want to use hdmi out then the X is nice. a bb will give you better battery life than any android though. in my opinion, that's the biggest problem with the line of droids.

  • The next big thing...lets make our own!

with the introduction of the n90 we saw a move into a new technological era soon the n90 was followed by other nseries devices the introduction of the n80 saw a huge wave of interest and also advances in functionality now we have the n95 which to me is the successor of the n80 my question is whats next?
I want to use this post to see what we the users hope to get next features and design here is what i want to deal with
Design: flip bar slide dual slide twist(n93) communicator-what design should be used?
Interface: tap/keypad touchscreen(p990) with qwerty full touchscreen(lg prada)-what interface should be used?
Memory: what should the internal memory be? Should a memory card slot be included? What is the max memory should the phone be capable of?
    Dimensions(dependant on form factor)
Included Applications(msn messenger? File browser? Maybe a document viewer and editor?)
Features: what features should be standard? What new features should be included?
Here is my opinion: twist keypad internal 1gb external up to 8gb with ability to increase via fw updates standard features gps camera main and secondary bluetooth with a2dp irda upnp wifi (all connectivity) high speed 3g basically dont leave anything out that we already have! But improve on them!
New features- really I DONT know what next i would like to see included on a mobile! Maybe full screen caller and when i exit the camera app and return to it it shouldnt go back to the default but my user settings should remain real full web browsing as i would on my pc including flash sites
Please add to this post in the same format as i have

    Possible More Advanced Features:
    a bit more Efficient Akkulifetime.
    8Mpix CMOS Camera Sensor NEC.
    http://www.symbian-freak.com/news/007/06/nec_8mpx_cmos_sensor.htm
Reduces Image JPG Compression the aquire Better
Image Quality Space shouldnt be a Problem with bigger
    Memorycards.
    8-12 GB microSDHC Support
    640x480 Displayresolution LowPowerConsuming Touchdisplay
like iPhone for Natural Mouselike Usage without DigitalPen like Windows Mobile Phones.
    OLED currently too Expensive.
    Ti OMAP3 3430 Processorsystem
    http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/wtbu/wtbuproductcontent.tsp?templateId=6123&navigationId=12643&cont...
More Advanced Gaming Abilitys but its not a Must
Phones with more Batterylifetime and Multimedia Features are better as a Mobile Gaming Device for that one you could play at home with your console.
    http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/wtbu/wtbugencontent.tsp?templateId=6123&navigationId=12700&contentI...
So a Synergy Device like the N95 is the Right Way to
Replace Many Devices NAVISystem IPOD MP3Player PDA FMRadio WLANDevice to integrate them into One.
I Personally like it to have one Device with the Ability
to do everything you need spontaneous e.g. VideoRecording of Funny Familymoments etc.
a More Advanced GPS Chip with also Lower Powerconsumption.
    GPS: NaviLink 5.0 Solution: NL5350
    http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/wtbu/wtbuproductcontent.tsp?templateId=6123&navigationId=12776&cont...
Support for the freecost DVB-T in Germany not DVB-H for which you have to pay (mobile Datatrafficcosts)
Better VideoRecording with efficient Digital Imagestabilisation not mechanical one its to Space Consuming.
some more WorkMemory and reduced memoryleaks are also a
wish to have a device that works stable with multiple open
applications at a time NAVigation Mail TelephoneApp in Syncronous parallel Usage if needed.
For Reduced Power Consumption it would be also interessing
if the Device is able to automaticlly switch poweroff dynamic parts in the system if they are not in Use and if they are needed to microboot this function into the running
base OS System. So a System that reacts automatic on that
what the user currently needs in a active Status.

  • Kin TwoM problems. Is anyone else experiencing this??

I got my KIN as a replacement for the Samsung Reality in February and it was a great replacement. Now after a few months of owning the device, problems are starting to appear.
When I recieve a call and answer it it will still keep vibrating and not allow me to talk to the person.
Lock the phone, then try to unlock the phone and the phone freezes and only solution is taking the battery out.
    Resetting.
Browser always cannot find the page to load, without refreshing the page fifty(exxageration) times.
I will be making a call to Verizon tonight, to see if there is a software update coming, or if they are just going to plain and simple send me out a replacement.
Oh and I've already erased the phone data once. And, I clear the internet history, cookies, cache. all the time.
    SOLUTIONS PLEASE

I just got off the phone with a Rep with Verizon Wireless, she gave me some inspiring news.
I told her my concerns about what needed to be done with the software of the device
    Backup Assisstant
    Virtual QWERTY.
Those were my biggest concerns, so I told her and she actually sent out a request to SHARP and MICROSOFT.
I'm telling you guys that you NEED to do this, the more and more people to have these requests, the better chance we'll have of seeing a software update for these phones.

  • The Palm phone engineers are complete IDIOTS!!!!!!! Treo Pro is a joke!!

    Re: Treo Pro
so i decided to give palm yet another chance and i got screwed once again.  i just got my TREO PRO in the mail (of course no carriers have it i guess they already knew palm was a waste of time).  so i'm playing with the phone (nothing really impressive, my HTC touch pro blows it out of the water) & i get a call coming in that i want to silence, not "ignore"...silence.  here's the difference for those that don't get it.  "silence" means while you hit a button (side volume for instance) the phone's ringer & vibrate feature stop while the phone goes thru its normal 4 ring cycle & then goes to voice mail.  "ignore" sends a caller straight to voice mail & the caller knows that they have been ignored.
is palm serious???  they actually let this phone come out???  i don't even think they view this as a glitch.  when i called about this thinking to myself that there was no way this could actually be, they know about it and it doesn't even seem like a problem to them.
PALM I QUIT!!!!!!  you jipped me for the last time.  this phone is going back as soon as i can get it back in the packaging it came in.  the only reason that i was willing to give it a try once more was because i want a open face qwerty keyboard, touchscreen, windows mobile device and palm is the only one that has that, but i will sacrifice one of those and get a phone that the developers truly took their time to release a phone without MAJOR OVERSIGHTS!

the ringer switch only stops the audible ring, not the vibrate feature.  imagine being in a meeting with a phone that you can't control.  very stupid on palm's behalf...very stupid!
Most of the meetings I sit in on, the vibrating phone in my pocket is the best part
Personally, I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill.  If you don't want the phone to either ring or vibrate during a meeting, just turn it off.

that's your opinion, however you wouldn't have that opinion if your phone rings every 5 mins because it's also a business line.  oh by the way, you can silence YOUR phone...right?
