Virtual terminals on Solaris 8

Does anyone know how to get virtual terminals running on Solaris 8? According to the xfree86 VT-switching documentation there is driver named chanmux which is missing. Was it renamed or is there another prodecure?

I think VT was ripped out of S8.

  • [Solved] Virtual terminals/agetty overhanging screen.

    I've got a strange problem on my Asus A6Jc lappy with nVidia 7300 Go card and 1280x800 screen. X/Gnome/KDE/Openbox/Whatever is fine and acts normally, but the virtual terminals (Ctrl-Alt-F[1-6]) are bigger than my physical screen (vertically). Not a problem to start with, and even if the terminal is used for more than a few commands, a 'clear' gets it usable again, but opening nano/vi/links chops off the last 4 or 5 lines of text.
    I don't think I've done anything particularly strange in the config files, and I've not got the problem in other distros. vbeinfo and hwinfo --framebuffer both give the same results (aside from the +-512 to convert between linux and vesa modes) but these only include 320x240, 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 at various bit depths, with no mention of 1280x800. I've searched the forum and google, although, to be fair, I'm not sure of the best things to search for. My /etc/inittab looks sane, and agetty takes no size arguments anyway that I can see. The other thing I've noticed is that the grub terminal works correctly - ie, doesn't overhang, its only the linux virtual terminals. I'm not sure if the boot messages fall off the edge, since they go past too quick for me.
    Any ideas where to look?

    On several laptops the kernel option vga=864 or vga=865 will select the widescreen resolution for the framebuffer. However 1280x800 is not an official VESA mode so these codes may or may not work depending on your laptop's manufacturer.
    If you use grub to boot other distros that work correctly you might want to take a look at the config file and see what they use as kernel options.

    Whats do you mean by a native virtual machine?
    Java is implemented by a virtual machine. The command to invoke it is called "java".
    A virtual machine is by definition a system to implement a virtual copy of one architecture on another. Which virtual architecture are you interested in finding an implementation of?

  • Cannot create guest virtual machine with Solaris 10 SPARC in Oracle VM 2.2

    Dear All,
    I try many times to create guest virtual machine with Solaris 10 SPARC but not get success.
    When I created it already and then I start the Power On button, it run normally but the Console button cannot click on (hide). After that the virtual machine running abit then it change status to Powered Off.
    Please kindly give advice for this.
    Thanks and regards,

    I storgly doubt, VMware player is available for Solaris 10 SPARC version.
    Solaris 10 is not a comercial product, like ubuntu, windows, MAC etc... It's really for a server.
    That's the reason still I hate Solaris 11 as a desktop. You have very limited product/software.... This may change for Solaris 11, but U can't expect one for Solaris 10.

  • Startx works fine... but kills my virtual terminals.

    What I mean by this is when I type in startx all goes well but as soon as I (Alt+F1 - F6) It just displays a black window with a flashing cursor similar to that of a "Pre" boot screen.
    To clear things up Virtual Terminals work just fine before startx in fact you start at TTY1 be default.
    How do I fix this?

    Any errors in the logs? What graphics driver are you using?

  • Monitoring Oracle Virtual Machine for Solaris servers and LDOMs

    Hi all,
      could anyone tell me if we can monitor Oracle Virtual Machine for Solaris servers and LDOMs with only Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c, or shall we need to install Ops Center ?
    Thank you in advance.

    I had the same issue. Upgrading Virtual box from 4.1.16 to 4.1.20 solved the problem.

  • Configuring virtual terminals

    Hi there
    Sorry if this isn't the correct terminology. I've seen someone on Gentoo where when they go to terminal 12 (Ctrl + Alt + F12) it shows them what is currently running in /var/log/messages and I thought that I'd like to try and get this working on my Arch system.
    Any tips?
    Thanks
    eskay

    The virtual terminals will display whatever's sent to them, so just write whatever text you like to /dev/vc/n, where n is the number of the VT you want to use. syslog is handy for this; just add something like this to the end of /etc/syslog-ng.conf:
    destination vt_12 { file("/dev/vc/12"); };
    log { source(src); filter(f_messages); destination(vt_12); };
    Replace f_messages with any of the filters defined in the file to get other information. You can even leave out the filter, if you want to see everything.

  • Virtual Machine on Solaris 10

    I am a new user of Solaris 10 on SPARC processor. My requirement is to run Ubuntu inside a virual machine on top of Solaris 10 platform. Already tried out Oracle VM VirtualBox. Though it comes with a distribution for Solaris on x86, it does not have a SPARC counterpart. Can anyone suggest any other freeware virtual machine solution to be run on Solaris 10 on SPARC?

  • Virtual Server w/Solaris as Host OS

    I've got a bunch of Sun Servers (6800's, 6900's) running Solaris 9 that I'd like to turn into Virtual Servers. In other words, make one of my 16 processor 6800's into half a dozen Linux Servers. I'm having problems finding a virtual server product that can use Solaris as the host os. I've looked at Xen and VMware but they only support Linux and Windows as the host. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm an Oracle DBA and this is outside my area of expertise. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Xen does work on OpenSolaris, but it's still pretty beta and I don't think there's any support for older versions of Solaris. Vmware is not (yet) supporting Solaris as host.
    You can create BrandZ zones that would support certain distributions (like redhat and centos), but again, that is a Solaris 10 only feature.
    The 6800 supports domains onboard, correct? If you had a linux distribution that would boot on the hardware, I would assume that you could load it up that way. I have no idea if any of them support that hardware well.

  • Not able to switch to virtual terminals

    I installed gnome 2.20 from teting repos some time back, It also upgraded Xorg from testing.
    Which broke X on my system, so I removed everything and installed everything(xorg + gnome + kde)  from extra again. But after that I am not able to switch to another virtual consoles i.e ctrl+alt+F1..F8 sequence is not switching terminals.
    pressing ctrl + alt + F1 is sending ";7P"
    [root@L3-LR893 ~]# ;7P;7P;7P;7P;7P
    and ctrl + alt + F2 is generating ";7Q"
    Now I have upgraded to gnome 2.20, but the problem exist.
    Has anybdy faced this problem before ?
    Thanks

    I'm having the exact same problem, and I have no idea how to fix it.  If anyone has any ideas, please post them.
    EDIT: Except I have not had to reinstall X, it just stopped working one day (I guess it was something that pacman automatically upgraded).

  • Cannot see virtual terminals

    I boot into X and then attempt to switch to a virtual terminal (ctrl+alt+f{1,2,3...}). I just get a black screen (the screen is on) but cannot see anything. The terminal is there because I can type 'root' and the password to log in and type 'restart' to restart the machine. Any idea how to fix this?
    I am running nouveau but the same issue was happening with the proprietary nvidia driver.

    Fixed by installing xf86-video-intel.

  • Screen remains dim after waking up on virtual terminals

    I am having a strange issue when the display gets dim and won't get bright again, but only when I am no a vt.
    I have an older (~4 yrs) Dell Studio 1737 with a Mobility Radeon inside with the xf86-video-ati driver:
    $ lspci | grep -i vga
    01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV635/M86 [Mobility Radeon HD 3650]
    $ pacman -Qq | grep xf86-video
    xf86-video-ati
    $ lsmod | grep radeon
    radeon 754282 2
    ttm 65132 1 radeon
    drm_kms_helper 35086 1 radeon
    drm 229990 4 ttm,drm_kms_helper,radeon
    i2c_algo_bit 5391 1 radeon
    i2c_core 22479 6 drm,i2c_i801,drm_kms_helper,i2c_algo_bit,radeon,videodev
    When I leave my computer on one of the virtual consoles (vt2 - vt6) and it is idle for (I think) 10 minutes, it gets dim (via DPMS, I guess?) . However, I can't make it go bright again - after I move the mouse (which I am not sure makes any sense since I have no mouse in the vts) / press any key, nothing happens.
    Now, the strange thing is, when the light is right, I can just see the text, but it is very, very dark and unreadable. Under normal circumstances I can see nothing and the screen can't be told apart form a blank black display. Actually, I had thought it was blank for a while until only recently, when I had the Sun shining against the display.
    I wrote a simple script whose name is 'b':
    echo 10 | tee /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
    and I left the console as root (!) for 10 minutes (!) and when the screen went dim I called 'b' and nothing happened. I have no other ideas about how deal with this one - I tried reading and looking around, and have pretty much nothing. Does this problem ring any bells? Does anybody know how this can be fixed (apart from "just don't leave it on the vt for longer than 10 mins" or similar ;d - these have occurred to me already). Of course, if you need any more information about my hardware, I will provide it.
    I am running a constantly updated arch.

    From the news page here...

    See if it's related to this...
    It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x
    The 2012 macs (and later apparently) (also later OSX versions on earlier Macs can do it also), not waking normally from sleep after hours being in sleep. (noted here ...

  • Can't switch virtual terminals with NVidia binary driver

    I got a new laptop, with an NVidia 9800M card, put Arch64 on it, and put the nvidia driver on it.  Right now, I'm using the default nvidia-xconfig --composite configuration, and X itself is working great.  However, upon switching VTs with Ctrl+Alt+F1, I get just a black screen, with not even the backlight.  I can, however, blindly type commands, and switching back to X with Alt+F7 works.  Googling around, it seems that it is a known problem, and that somehow the driver is setting the display to an invalid video mode upon switching VTs.  I tried a few proposed solutions, including adding different video= options to the kernel, and nothing has helped.  What, if any, is the solution?  Thanks.
