VirtualBox 1.6.4 Arch Guest do I STILL need to to use Ide_Legacy mode?

PROBLEMS:
[DO I HAVE to use ide_legacy to install arch? and would that mean I get to use old methods like drive naming conventions etc.????!!!]
-WITH SATA drives checked in vbox 1.6.4 VM setup ... AND then using regular install of ARCH -
I CAN install ARCH in Vbox 1.6.4 on my server 2008 trial host laptop  though even if I install the additions first doing
pacman -S xorg gnome gnome-extra hwd gdm
UPON reboot AFTER installing gnome (as a test) It all craps out with a really long list of stuff beginning with bracketed numbers I think.. and then at the end a bunch of numbers across the screen... is that kernel panic...???? hehehe dunno actually. Sorry I can't be more specific...
I just need to know WHAt the setting are for virtualbox... I USED the arch linux setting that vbox has... though I DID check SATA disks and did NOT use Ide_Legacy when installing Arch which seemed wrong If I was using SATA disks...
I guess there's no reason to use sata disks checkbox? I thought PERHAPS this might let me hook up a sata external drive... though I figure that's not really possible or even needed by me. SATA drive emulation would be cool?
hmmmmm..... PATA should be fine though I do believe I get the same prob. without checking that SATA box in box setting for the VM.....   must be that I need  ide_legacy.... which kinda seems old ?
And them wouldn't I have a bunch of  pacages problems with pacman???????!!!!!!!!!!!!
This post.... very last entry say ide_legacy mode is need to install arch as a guest on a windows host with VirtualBox..
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=28863&p=3
Anyone know if this is STILL the case...
there's a SATA checkbox now with the latest vbox version 1.6.4
I'm having a really hard time getting arch installed as a guest using vbox 164 on a win server2008 system...
It's going to be nice and comfy when I do get a VM of Arch to use on the server 2008 partition though!
thanks!!!!!!!

Here's my answer...
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Guest_OSes
http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic. … light=arch
Which I kinda though WAS the case..
SO: Can anyone tell me.... WHAT is NOT modern about the legacy option stuff....
I REALLY wanna work with UDEV   etc etc etc etc
LOVE to find out what's what with the ide_legacy option
I also considered QEMU though the windows port seems to be dying or not gonna work with server 2008 as my host for these experiments
Oh well.... I wouldn't be making the time for any of this had not my old PIII 1 gh z laptop died....
I was OS happy with a real install on there....
Then again.... I guess vox is kinda cool too
thanks!

  • No internet/DNS connection with Arch guest on Virtualbox

I am trying to run Archlinux as a guest OS in Virtualbox on an Ubuntu 7.10 host system, and I cannot connect to anything but my router. So far, I have only installed the base system (Arch Linux core 2007.08-2) from a CD.
I can ping the localhost (both on 127.0.0.1 and 10.0.2.15) and my gateway (10.0.2.2), but not my DNS server (10.0.2.3) or anything else (like www.google.com). So far, I went through the "Beginners Guide", the "Official Arch Linux Install Guide", the configuring network section of the ArchWiki, and tried to find some solution on the internet. Still no luck.
I have set up networking to use dhcp. The networking section in my /etc/rc.conf file looks like:
    HOSTNAME="arch"
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
    ROUTES=(!gateway)
The daemons that run during startup are:
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond)
I have put the hostname in the /etc/hosts file like:
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost arch
The nameserver that shows up in my /etc/resolv.conf file is:
    nameserver 10.0.2.3
I am a bit puzzled and I don't know what to do. I do think it is an Arch issue, since I also have Windows XP running in a Virtualbox with Ubuntu as host, and that works fine with the same Virtualbox settings and network settings within the guest OS.
I would appreciate any help here.

    Try reading the VirtualBox manuals.
I specifically remember that ping doesn't work at all, although you DO have internet connection.
Try running some sort of web browser (firefox or links), and then decide if you have internet access or not.
And, of course, make sure you do have dhcp running ("dhcpcd eth0").
    One last thing:
I have an Arch guest (on VirtualBox), running on an Arch host.
    Everything works fine..
Simply installed it from the installation CD, didn't have to do nothing special for it to work..

  • Mounting USB devices in arch guest

I'm new to virtualbox, but not to linux.  I have been using arch for at least 3 years, so I have some familiarity with it.  I have recently installed arch as a guest OS on virtualbox (on OSX host).  I am having some trouble accessing an attached USB device from the arch guest.  I have defined the virtualbox USB filter for my device, and it appears to work, detecting the identified device and attaching it to the guest (at least as far as virtualbox is concerned).   I can see the device in the virtualbox pull-down menu, and it shows with a "checkmark" next to it, showing (I think) that it has been attached to my arch guest.
Problem is, I cannot see the device from the arch guest.  no entry in /dev for any USB device.  symptoms are the same whether i insert ther USB device before or after starting the arch guest.  I have HAL and dbus active in my guest.  Also, I have made this work in arch installed natively.  since there is no /dev entry, this might appear to be some form of udev issue?  is there a specific udev setup that I should be aware of for arch as a guest?
Please help if you can.  I will appreciate all comments and suggestions.
    -dvh

hey, ive got Arch setup in virtualbox as well, and can mount usb's and cd's etc. (although with some issues i may need to bring up in another thread...) anyways, im assuming you have the PUEL virtualbox and not the OSE one?
also, your certain that you've mounted the correct USB (on the Virtual Box pull-down menu)? because you may have mounted a USB which was already attached to your host, and not the actual USB?
just checking, i dont know much about how to fix this issue so im just going at the simple solutions...

  • How to install DKMS within Win7(host) + Arch(guest)

    http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=11657
    The following is my environment:
    Host: Win 7
Guest: Virtual Box + Arch (kernel 2.6.33)
Now, I want to adjust the resolution inside VBox, default is always 800x600 and cannot change it without any more actions.
So I refered to the manual in VBox, said need to install VBoxAddition.
But I don't know how to install DKMS, which is a project form DELL, and it seems to be prerequsite for VBoxAddition.
    Thanks in advance.

sand_man wrote:Ummm.... This is the second of these posts I've seen lately so I'm a little confused.
You just need to install virtualbox-additions from the official repos. The package is merely the guest additions iso file which you need to mount in the guest and install from there.
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vir … _Additions
Anyway, thank you for the reply.
But I look up in the URL you posted, it's used in the case of Arch(host) + Arch(guest) or as my understanding, at least Arch(host).
quoted from the Arch-Vitualbox wiki : "The instructions immediately below are for an Archlinux guest on an Archlinux host."
and I also tried as the instruction, it cannot work indeed. so I think DKMS is a must for WinXXX(host) + Arch(guest).
As for other guest hosted in WinXXXX, like Debian(Ubuntu), Fedora distros, it has repo package at hands, so can be used directly.
When it comes to our Arch, it's treated as Unsupported package, so I am asking how to install DKMS under such circumstances.
    quotes from Virtual Box manual:
The VirtualBox Guest Additions for Linux are provided on the same ISO CD-ROM as the Additions for Windows described above. They also come with an installation program guiding you through the setup process, although, due to the significant differences between Linux distributions, installation may be slightly more complex.
Installation generally involves the following steps:
       1.
Before installing the Guest Additions, you will have to prepare your guest system for building external kernel modules. This works similarly as described in the section called "The VirtualBox kernel module", except that this step must now be performed in your Linux guest instead of on a Linux host system, as described there.
Again, as with Linux hosts, we recommend using DKMS for Linux guests as well. If it is not installed, use this command for Ubuntu/Debian systems:
          sudo apt-get install dkms
          or for Fedora systems:
          yum install dkms
Make sure to nstall DKMS before installing the Linux Guest Additions.
       2.
Mount the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso file as your Linux guest's virtual CD-ROM drive, exactly the same way as described for a Windows guest in the section called "Installation".
       3.
Change to the directory where your CD-ROM drive is mounted and execute as root:
          sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run
In a 64-bit Linux guest, use VBoxLinuxAdditions-amd64.run instead.
For your convenience, the following step-by-step instructions have been verified to work for freshly installed copies of the most popular Linux distributions. After these preparational steps, you can execute the VirtualBox Guest Additions installer as described above.

  • [Solved]Vbox 3.1.2 - Bridged networking stopped working on Arch guest

After upgrading Virtual Box to 3.1.2 (both ose and puel versions apply here) bridged networking stopped working on an Arch guest which I use as a test server.
    While writing this post I solved the problem. What I did was to enable NAT on the first adapter and Bridging on the second. After booting into to the guest I did the following;
    # ifconfig eth1 up
    # dhcpcd eth1
I shutdown the guest and removed the NAT adapter so only the bridged one remained, booted it and voilá for some mysterious and unfathomable reason bridging now works again.

  • Zerofree: Shrinking ARCH guest VMDK--'remount the root file-system'?

    Hi!
    [using ZEROFREE]
Getting great results with and extra ARCH install running as a VMDK in Workstation.
REALLY need tips on shrinking the VMDK. obviously have deleted unneeded files
and now rather urgently need to learn what's eluding me so far.
    1) zerofree is install IN the virtual machine (VMDK)workstation  running on windows 8.
    2) Here's the instructions for zerofree:
filesystem has to be unmounted or mounted  read-only  for  zerofree  to
work.  It  will exit with an error message if the filesystem is mounted
           writable.
To remount the  root  file-system  readonly,  you  can  first
switch to single user runlevel (telinit 1) then use mount -o remount,ro
           filesystem.
As it a VMDK and it's running would the only/best option be to: "remount the  root  file-system  readonly" ??
OR, could i add the VMDK to another running arch system that I do have and NOT mount the VMachine thereby
allowing zero free to run even better on that?
Are both method JUST as efficive at shrinking? My guess would be the remount root file-system as read only
would NOT be as efficient at shrinking.
I could really use a brief walk-through on this as all attempts have failed so far.
I boot the ARCH virtual machine and do what may I ask?

How did you use/test unison? In my case, unison, of course, is used in the cpio image, where there are no cache files, because unison has not been run yet in the initcpio image, before it had a chance to be used during boot time, to generate them; and during start up is when it is used; when it creates the archives. ...a circular dependency. Yet, files changed by the user would still need to be traversed to detect changes. So, I think that even providing pre-made cache files would not guarantee that they would be valid at start up, for all configurations of installation. -- I think, though, that these cache files could be copied/saved from the initcpio image to the root (disk and RAM), after they have been created, and used next time by copying them in the initcpio image during each start up. I think $HOME would need to be set.
Unison was not using any cache previously anyway. I was aware of that, but I wanted to prove it by deleting any cache files remaining.
Unison, actually, was slower (4 minutes) the first time it ran in the VM, compared to the physical hardware (3:10s). I have not measured the time for its subsequent runs, but It seemed that it was faster after the first run. The VM was hosted on a newer machine than what I have used so far: the VM host has an i3-3227U at 1.9 GHz CPU with 2 cores/4 threads and 8 GB of RAM (4 GB ware dedicated to the VM); my hardware has a Pentium B940 at 2 GHz CPU with 2 cores/2 threads and 4 GB of RAM.
I could see that, in the VM, rsync and cp were copying faster than on my hardware; they were scrolling quicker.
Grub, initially complains that there is no image, and shows a "Press any key to continue" message; if you continue, the kernel panics.
I'll try using "poll_device()". What arguments does it need? More than just the device; also the number of seconds to wait?

  • New arch install, scanner problems still persist.

Alright now officially under arch after spending a night configuring it and such (still dual booting antergos as a fallback though just in case things go weird) but alas my scanner issue that I have with my HP ENVY 4500 scanner/printer still persists.
After browsing though documentation and reading up I am still unable to solve this rather strange issue with my scanner.
    I went here:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/sane
I installed sane, xsane xsane-gimp (as I use gimp for image editing) and I got butkis
I rebooted my computer, poked and prodded HPLIP-gui and once more HPLIP toolbox recognises my scanner while the stand alone software (commandline or otherwise) does not.
If it helps here is my kernel info and what desktop I am using
    Kernel 3.15.8-1 (64bit) with XFCE
Once more I am stumped by this issue, even with the wiki in play this issue still befuddles me.
Everything else seems to be working here except for my scanner.
I did my homework here folks so its not like I did anything wrong, just hit this roadblock in my so far so good install of arch.

    Congrats on installing Arch.
Now, if you need assistance, you'll have to provide meaningful error or log messages: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57855
Err thats the thing I am not getting error messages that can give me clues, just generic "device not found" or "no devices found" messages so some help that is
If it gave me more info I would have shared it, but no even command line gives no real complex feedback other then "no devices found"
So mystery persists regardless, even with logs in play nothing is coming up that will be of any use as in my logs its just more of the same.
I am just stuck without no other clues on to why hplip-gui works but nothing else does
Its not a firewall or permissions error I checked that bit
Its not like this device is incompatible, works without a hitch in Ubuntu and its sane is the same as the one in arch.
Maybe I will try to work something out here using Ubuntu as a guide, I just pop it onto my other drive (the one I am using antergos on, that can be replaced) and maybe I can see where the issue lays by working this out backwards.
Good thing I have two drives so I can multi distro my hearts content

  • Virtualbox Arch Guest Stuck at 'Stopping Network'

Don't post full size images. Read our forum rules. You have been warned --Inxsible
Screenshot says it all. It was running just fine until I hit reboot, at which point it got stuck at that stage of the reboot process. Just for reference, I'm running Xfce/LXDM on this machine and it has the guest additions installed and properly configured.
Could someone kindly explain why this happened?

Same problem here... Only does it when I start a VirtualBox virtual machine... If I don't, reboots normal:
Here are the messages I get over and over:
unregister_netdevice: waiting for br0 to become free. Usage count = -1
I have to sync and then reset machine to reboot...
    Any ideas how to resolve?
    Thanks!

  • (SOLVED) Virtualbox bridged network, windows host, arch guest

I am trying to get my archlinux guest's network working again. It was working before I bridged the connection and changed the adaptor to the bridged one, but I want a bridged connection for certain reasons, so I want it working. This is the result I get when I use sudo dchcpcd eth0:
    dhcpcd: version 5.0.7 starting
dhcpcd: eth0: rebinding lease of 10.0.2.15
dhcpcd: eth0: broadcasting for a lease
    dhcpcd: eth0: offered 192.168.0.199 from 192.168.0.1
    dhcpcd: eth0: acknowledged 192.168.0.199 from 192.168.0.1
    dhcpcd: eth0: checking for 192.168.0.199
    dhcpcd: eth0: hardware address 00:le:8c:85:a6:4d claims 192.168.0.199
dhcpcd: eth0: send_raw_packet: Bad file descriptor
dhcpcd: eth0: rebinding lease of 10.0.2.15
    dhcocd: timed out
I have no clue why it's not working, but I am sort of new to linux and virtual machines. Still, can anyone help me get the bridged connection working?
    EDIT: Nevermind, I fixed it.

All I did was unbridge my windows network. You only select the bridged network from virtualbox, don't manually bridge your network!
If you windows network is not bridged with your vm's host only network in the windows networking page, then I dunno what your problem is.

  • Resizing VMware window doesn't change resolution in Arch guest

Sorry if this is an oft-repeated question; I've seen several posts asking about similar issues, but they seem to be quite outdated.
I'm trying to run xmonad in X, and I'm having trouble making VMware recognize that the guest OS supports resolution changes.
I've installed open-vm-tools according to the Arch Linux in VMware page, though open-vm-tools-dkms seems not to exist anymore. (Edit: I installed open-vm-tools-dkms from AUR. No change.) vmtoolsd.service and vmtoolsd are enabled and started; xf86-input-vmmouse, xf86-video-vmware, and svga-dri are installed; vmwgfx is set to load at boot; /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-gpudriver.conf is filled in as explained in the wiki.

  • Accessing VirtualBox host drive from IIS guest OS

    Hi there,
I have a setup with Windows 7 as the host OS that is running VirtualBox (4.2.18). The guest I am running is using Windows Server 2012 as the OS. The guest OS has its own domain, completely separate from the host.
For development purposes I want to configure a dev web app that pulls its files from the host and runs them in an IIS process within the guest. How do I proceed?
I really would like to use the VirtualBox's UNC path \\vboxsrv\d_drive but I am getting the following error from IIS:
HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error
The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid.
One solution as a workaround that I have found is creating a new shared drive, e.g. d$ on the host, add an account (e.g. "virtualbox") on host and guest, and configure this account as the apppool-account and as the connection-account with cleartext
credentials to the physical path of the webapp. This is a lot of work. With this setup I experience delays of 5 seconds, that I guess are due to the authentication that is always taking its time.

    Hi,
It seems like that the user account you're using for your app pool doesn't have rights to the web site directory, so it can't read config from there.  Check the app pool and see what user it is configured to run as.  Check the directory and see
if that user has appropriate rights to it.  While you're at it, check the event log and see if IIS logged any more detailed diagnostic information there.
Please post in the IIS forum for further analysis:

The fast network device driver (vmxnet module) is used only for our fast
networking interface. The rest of the software provided by VMware Tools is
designed to work independently of this feature.
If you wish to have the fast network driver enabled, you can install the driver
by running vmware-config-tools.pl again after making sure that gcc, binutils,
make and the kernel sources for your running kernel are installed on your
machine. These packages are available on your distribution's installation CD.

    Thanks in advance.

You shouldn't need the kernel sources, just point vmware tools to the right location :
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
    kernel? [/lib/modules/2.6.22-ck/build/include]
    Replace with usr/src/linux-2.6.22-ck/include/
If you still get this error /tmp/vmware-config0/vmxnet-only/vmxnet.c:1058: error: too many arguments to function 'vmxnet_interrupt'
see vmware tools 5.5.3, linux 2.6.19, vmxnet compile fix
as mentioned at the bottom of the wiki page.
