As was stated after you installed virtualbox-modules, you need to load the modules manually. Also make sure your username is part of the vboxusers group.
sudo modprobe vboxdrv
sudo modprobe vboxnetflt
sudo gpasswd -a USERNAME vboxusers
Then log out and back in. You should also probably add those modules to the modules section of your rc.conf, or you will have to use modprobe manually every time you reboot. Also check out the wiki page for VirtualBox, it is very informative.

  • Virtualbox and Windows 7 clones - registration

I have created a virtual machine using virtualbox. I purchased a version of Windows 7 to support this virtual machine since I do experimentation with the "base" installation of a prodcut I support. I always go backto my original version (clone) of my installation. However, everytime I try create my clone OR returnto my original clone, have to reregister my Windows installation. It was not really a problem until recently which is when I exceeded the reregisteration of the product.
Does anyone have a solution or know how I can fix this problem.
My goal is to have a single version of the product running and I only use it to ensure I install things correctly then I use the new version and delete the redundant versions.

  • Bootcamp and Windows 8

i have a mocbook air with a super drive. im using the disk that came with window and trying to use bootcamp to install windows 8 but you need a ISO file which is not on the disk
    Pls help

You need the USB SuperDrive. Windows 8 isn't compatible with Boot Camp, so wait until Apple launches updated drivers or install Windows 7 on your computer. Also, you can use Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox and install Windows 8 in a virtual machine

  • How to I run Snow Leopard,  Mountain Lion and Windows 8 on my new iMac

I just bought a new iMac. My goal is to set up 3 different partions to run 3 different operating systems (Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard, and Windows 8).  The reason for this post is because when I attempted to do this same thing on my old iMac ( except I was running Lion instead of Mountain Lion) I was able to create a partion that would run Snow Leopard (so I could run Final Cut Pro 6.0.6 on a more stable platform), however I totally "hosed" my old Bootcamp partition running Windows XP. The iMac won't even bootup in Bootcamp anymore. It is just a black screen and it says something about it not being a bootable drive and to insert a bootable disc.
So I need to know the best way to do this, and I want to avoid having the same problems with my new iMac that I had on my old one, especially since I have a freelance job starting next week and my client is sending me licences for software that I will need to run on Windows 8.
    Thank you in advance

Use the Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows 8 and a product such as VirtualBox, VMware Fusion, or Parallels Desktop to run Snow Leopard Server in emulation. That iMac model isn't capable of being booted into Snow Leopard.

  • Can I dual boot with MAC OS/X and Windows

What is the best way to configure a dual boot on my MAC Bookpro laptop? Also, can I dual boot Windows 8 and MAC OS?

The first alternative is a dual-boot arrangement between OS X and Windows provided with OS X.
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows
XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  For Boot Camp
4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech Labs- Virtualization Benchmarks, January 2013 | MacTech for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Can I run a windows software program taht is on a CD on my macbook pro after I install bootcamp and windows xp home?

Can I run a windows software program that is on a CD on my macbook pro after I install bootcamp and windows xp home?

    genepaquin,
the last MacBook Pros that supported installing Windows XP in a Boot Camp partition are the Mid 2010 models. If your MacBook Pro is newer than that, and you don’t have a newer version of Windows to install into a Boot Camp partition on your MacBook Pro, then you might consider an alternative such as running Windows with the help of programs such as VirtualBox or Parallels Desktop rather than through Boot Camp.

  • Snow Leopard Boot Camp and Windows 7 64bit

I have a late 2006 Mac Pro with 2xDual Core 2.66ghz procs and 6 gigs of ram. I've been thinking of running Windows 7 64 bit in Boot Camp for a few games and had an EFI question. I searched thru the forum but can't seem to find an answer (possibly my own ignorance of not understanding, but that's not the point).
Since I'm running 32bit EFI will I be able to run the 64 bit version of Win7 in boot camp or am I limited to 32bit version?

    It is a PITA.
    Install a 32-bit version, as a mini-OS to bootstrap yourself into 64-bit;
Or, modify the DVD you will burn by editing the ISO, which can be done with VirtualBox etc.
I did it multiple times and posted a long rambling thread over on Boot Camp AD.
    It is weird.
For fun, I install W7 x64 on PC, moved it over to Mac Pro and Windows gracefully just updated all the needed chipset drivers for me.
As usually, there are multiple ways to do anything.
Pull Mac drive and system, install a RAW drive or format as MBR and MSDOS, you'll want 3-4 partitions or multiple drives.
By using 32-bit version, you can then create a couple volumes.
8GB for editing the ISO and DVD or to run the installer from. This is a very fast way to do any install. Same idea works with Mac OS and restoring the DVD to disk.
When you burn Win7 DVD, do so at slow/reduced speeds.
    20GB for first Win7 32-bit partition.
    Whatever you want for x64.
    Data volume?
A 64-bit can't be installed over 32-bit, but it will install to another volume all while you are booted into Windows 7 x32.
    It took some playing around.
Modifying the ISO with a Windows utility worked, once but I never got the hang to do it again, kept getting unbootable copies and wasted DVDs.
Intel has UEFI 2.3 as the latest and I have been tempted to become EFI Group membership just to nuke the olde EFI32 - I now work mostly on a pair of i7 machines running 7.

  • [SOLVED] Virtualbox and USB Support

I use Virtualbox quite regularly for work and school. I have Windows installed within Virtualbox, and I use it whenever school or work requires. However, USB support has never worked for me (even with the fstab addition) and I thought maybe I'll spend some time to figure this out.
Basically, I may want to do things like insert a flash drive and make it available to the VM, or even sometimes an MP3 player or even my PSP. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. There USB filters, but often times the device I want is greyed out, and can't be selected. When I am able to select a device to create a filter, it doesn't do anything. I did check the Wiki already.
Maybe I'm missing something? Or is USB support in Virtualbox just that bad? I was hoping there would be some sort of way I can dedicate a USB port to Virtualbox, and make it exclusive. I think VMWare can do that but I'm not sure that Virtualbox can.

I hope it's ok to post in this thread because if I started a new thread the title would be identical.  I am also using virtualbox_bin from AUR and while USB passthrough works just fine to my Windows XP guest, it can't be working any faster than USB v1.1 speed.  I have the appropriate entry in /etc/fstab and am a member of the virtualbox group.  No permissions problems and from what I can tell there's no corruption of data to/from any of my USB flash drives.  The only issue I've had other than the aforementioned lack of speed is with a 1TB Western Digital Passport.  It seemed to have "lost" some directories.  In other words they appeared completely empty on the XP side.  After shutting down the guest I verified that all of the files were indeed still there and intact.  I've basically chalked that one up to a deficiency in Windows XP.  But this speed issue is seriously holding me back.

  • I got a question regarding running iOs and Windows using virtual software.

    Greetings!
I got a question regarding running iOs and Windows using virtual software. I recently bought a monitor so I can display Windows on it and run both OS at the same time. Now,I'm using BootCamp. I downloaded VirtualBox for "tranferring" Windows on it. Since I'm a new iOs user , what do I need to do in order to make work?
Do I need to un-install Windows from BootCamp, install VirtualBox and then install them again?
Any information would be appreciate it!

That should work to use OS X, you can run MS Windows using Virtual Box and use a seperate display for the Virtual Box window. That way you can run OS X and MS Windows simultaneously. However remember Virtual Box is freeware and not a commercial application like Parallels or VMWare Fusion and may not have the features of a commercial application. Support for Windows run in any virtualization application (Virtual Box, Parallels or Fusion) is not generally done on this forum as they are not OS X related. To get help on those apps you usually will need to go to their forums.
Remember IOS will not run on either OS X or MS Windows, it only works on IOS devices.
    Good luck with your installation.

  • Can you figure out this setup? Snow Leopard and Windows 7...

    Here's my potential rig:
    - Running a Mac Pro.
    - 2 Hard Drives:
    1) Snow Leopard on first drive
    2) Windows 7 on second drive
    - 2 24" Apple LED Cinema Displays
So here's my question...is there a way I can have both OS's running at the same time, with Snow Leopard on the left monitor and Windows 7 on the right monitor, all running out from one computer rig (Mac Pro)?
I've heard of ppl using Synergy to run dual monitors with dual computers and sharing one keyboard and mouse. I want to do the same EXCEPT run it all out of 1 computer.
    Any advice, suggestions, critiques?
    Thanks!

You'll have to rely on virtualization there. Check out parallels or VMWare Fusion. I think both companies provide evalauation versions. There's also Sun's free VirtualBox that you might want to give a try. A virtual windows installation won't perform as well as a boot camp installation in all situations

Boot Camp Assistant is just a tool that simplifies the process of partitioning the hard drive and installing Windows. Windows does not come with a Mac nor with OS X. You must purchase a valid retail copy of Windows XP w/SP2 (32-bit only), Windows Vista, or Windows 7.
All Intel Macs come with OS X installed, and Boot Camp Assistant is an included application. Also see:
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.

    6. Last is Q. Q is a freeware emulator that is compatible with Intel Macs. It is much slower than the virtualization software, Parallels and VM Fusion.

Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. The Boot Camp Beta that was used with Tiger has expired and is no longer available for use. So contrary to the other poster's comment, Boot Camp isn't truly "free." You must purchase Leopard or Snow Leopard to get it.

No dice... I did all that and still doesn't work.  Do you think gnome3.2 has something to do with it?

    fowler,
I don't have problems with auto change resolution and my system is up to date, particularly xorg (not gnome, i don't use it).
However I don't use virtualbox-bin (I did, in the past), I don't think its needed anymore.
    I have installed:
    virtualbox 4.1.4-2
    virtualbox-additions 4.1.4-1
    virtualbox-ext-oracle 4.1.4-1 (from aur)
and then installed the guest additions, which should be enough.

  • Problem with Sessions and window.open

    Hi,
    Hi everyone,
    Help Please!!!
I am working with Sevlet session objects and HTML forms and windows. I have an HTML form for the user to supply a username and password. Once the user clicks submit I need to open another browser window that has no toolbar, no location, no status bar, etc. The user should also be able to go back to that login screen and login again and open a 2nd, 3rd, etc. instance of the application. My problem is that each application is being asigned the same sessionId. I believe it is being asigned to the main login window and thus to the other child windows it opens. Is there a way to work around this? Do I need to make the user open another browser window to login? I need to be able to let the user open multiple instances of the application with unique session ids for each.
Any insight is GREATLY appreciated on this topic. Anything you can tell me about sessions (Java), IE, window.open would help greatly!
    THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!

To achieve this, you must introduce another level of
abstraction to the Servlet specifications. When you
work with JSP/Servlets you use mostly the HttpSession
to handle user related tasks, and the aplication
context, for things that are common to all users. But
inside the HttpSession scope, you want to create
containers that have 'smaller' scope and are uniquely
    identified.
A ipothetical scenario :Let's say that you must have
multiple connections to several databases, on each
database user rights beeing diferrent, and you must be
able to track user actions globaly, and eventualy
capture a 'Close Application event' and close all db.
    connections.
    1. when the user first accesses the login frame create
the HttpSession. In the HttpSession object, store a
Hastable (let's call it 'ConnectionTable'). Each
object in the Hashtable must identify uniqely a
database connection. Now, to create unique identifiers
ids, make the keys in the hashtable java.lang.Long
    objects, created using System.getCurrentTimeMillis().
This guaranties there will be no possible confusion.
From each new open window, on each request to the
server, along with the usefull parameters, send the
connection identifier. When proccessing the request,
select the object from the Hastable wich corresponds
    to the ID.
    2. Now, the values in the ConnectionTable, must act as
the containers that I mentioned in the first
paragraph. The simplest way to do this is to have
again a Hashtable derived class to do the job, wich
exploses methods similar to HttpSession: setAttibute (
Object key, Object value) and getAttibute ( Object
key, Object value). This container may use internally
a Hashtable to store object, and explose only the
getAttribute and setAttribute methods for clarity. Any
way, this is a problem of implementation. Let's call
    this class CustomSession.
    Now, a textual activity diagram:
1 user accesses the main page, you start a new
HttpSession; In the HttpSession object, store the
    ConnectionTable object.
    2. the user enters the userID and pwd and adatabase
name, and a new window is opened. Let's supose the
    data entered is valid.
    3. when you process the login data, you create a new
CustomSession object. you put in it whatever you would
put in your HttpSession. You generate a unique
    identifier using System.CurrentTimeMillis(). Put the
CustomSession object in the ConnectionTable, using the
generated id as key. Send the response.
    ..... later on .....
    100. the user asks for a particular action to be
performed - e.g. a row deletion. The page contains a
form with text field where the user introduces the
row number, a submit button and a hidden input with
    the ID.
    101. you process the data. Get the ID from the request
object, get the ConnectionTable from the session, get
the CustomSession using the ID as key, do whatever
your logic was doing, but obtaining the objects from
    the CustomSession instead of HttpSession
    NicNic,
Very slick idea. I think that it could work and it seems that there would be not security issues because the id that you would store on the client side is the Unique Identifier and not the actual Session Id. Do you forsee any security issues for this implementation?

  • How can I make an icon that links to a webpage that works with Mac and Windows??

    Hi!
I burn CDs with my photos and send them to clients.   Besides the photos folder, I would like to include a file (similar to the .webloc files on the Mac Desktop) that can be clicked and it will be linked to my website - it will open up a browser window and go to my website .      Is it posssible to make one of these icons that works with both Macs and Windows machines?  Thanks!

    Now it works!  Thanks, Denico!
The reason I saved to text:   The first time I followed your instructions, it did not work.   I tried to figure out what I did wrong and saw that you wrote to "save as plain text."   I did not know what this means and there was no option available to save a plain text.  So I looked around and saw "save as stationery" and I guessed that maybe that was what you meant.   And after that, it worked!  But the next thing you know, the icons started duplicating themselves.
I guess I had made a different mistake in the beginning and I fixed it without knowing what it is.
    Thanks for clearing that up.
But just one question.  WHY does saving as "stationery" make an icon duplicate itself?
