This laptop used to not work under linux unless you used the vesa driver which would still lock up most of the time.  Yet, it runs fine in my windows xp partition that I keep around for school.  I was wondering, since its been a good while since I tried to install on this laptop if anyone new what video driver I should use.  I used to try openchrome and via to no avail.  Any hepl is great, Thanks, Justin.

Well have you tried not using the testing kernel? From the Beginners install guide:
"WARNING: Be careful when enabling [testing]. Your system may break after you update with [testing] enabled. Only experienced users should use it."
Also have you tried any boot CD's with a GUI like Ubuntu/Linuxmint/openSUSE,Fedora etc. to see if that works?
Also did you install the right drivers on setup?
    xf86-video-unichrome or xf86-video-via
and you have the libgl also?
    pacman -S libgl

I use Xfmedia under xfce4.6 to watch movies. In the Preference->Devices->Video, there are so many drivers:

    # { auto  dxr3  aadxr3  xv  raw  SyncFB  xshm  xxmc  none  sdl  vidix  vidixfb  fb  xvmc }, default: 0
    #video.driver:auto
It seems that each driver can work. Which is the best or What's the differences between them ?

  • S10 Windows XP 64bits Video driver

I've tried installing the 64bits nVidia video driver for the Quadro 370 but the system doesn't boot. I've tested the video card in another pc and it works fine (under 32bits). I've successfully installed a Quadro 1700 under 64bits in my S10 but no luck with my 370. Any suggestions?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

what happens when the system doesn't boot?   are you getting past POST?   if so, are you seeing a BSOD?
are you installing the FX 370 by itself with no other video card (ie: not in conjunction with the FX 1700)?
what video driver version are you using?   have you tried the latest available from nvidia's site?

  • W500 4058-CTO / 4063-A74 Windows 7 RTM Video Driver Failures

Windows 7 RTM, (yes RTM, not RC or Beta) on either model of the W500 show ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 if you have your BIOS set properly.
On the 4063 the driver runs fine, no issues that I can detect.  On the 4058 it crashes constantly when browsing websites in IE 8.0.  When it fails, it hangs the machine UI for a short period of time, then blacks out, then returns to normal with a message that the driver failed and recovered.  Fortunately no BSOD or loss of work, but a major annoyance.

Not a good start here for the 4058-CTO and Windows 7 with the ATI FireGL 5700...anyone else see this behavior yet?

I'm experiencing the same thing on my 4058-CTO with Win 7 RTM. The strange thing is that it only happens when I'm browsing and using the laptop screen. When at work using an external DVI monitor I have not had this problem happen even once. Unfortunately it is not specific to Lenovo or ATI. Do an internet search on this error "Display driver atikmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered." and you will be amazed how many other people are having this same issue, and it's been going on for years now. It seems to have started with Vista.
It's quite frustrating, but I'm not really expecting a fix anytime soon after doing some research.

  • Windows 7: graphics/video driver issues

    Hi,
i've just installed Windows 7 pro (oem version) on my macbook pro (unibody june 2009 edition, running Leopard OS) - installation was quick and painless. I made sure to install the boot camp drivers/leopard from the discs within Windows, however win 7 is still unable to detect my NVidia GeForce GT 9600 graphics card.
It's detected instead as a 'standard vga graphics adapter'. I then tried to install the latest driver from the NVidia website, however during the installation process it comes up with an error message stating it 'cannot locate any drivers that are compatible with current hardware' and exits.
Completely stumped. Could anyone help me out?

Problem solved, just a matter of getting my hands of Snow Leopard's Boot camp 3.0

  • Windows 10 and video driver

Upgraded my Yoga 2 Pro from Win 8.1 to Win 10.  Works great, except.  When I plug my video projector in, it tells me I need to load the necessary drivers or connect my projector.  The projector was functioning fine with the Yoga before the upgrade, now, nothing?  Uploaded the Win 10 graphics and video updates from the Lenovo website.  No change.  Am I missing something else?

Go ahead and install the 8.1 driver from Acer, it'll work better than the one you are using now.

Check the Windows System Event Viewer to see the details of the crash, most importantly the name of the faulting module.
Most crashes on Open or Save are due to OS bugs (especially on MacOS) or bugs in third party extensions to the OS open and save dialogs.

  • 4 cores or 8 cores and which video card to choose

My father and I are presented with a dilemma. Should we get 8 core model or the 4 core model at several hundred dollars cheaper?
I have never actually bought for myself a computer, and I want to make this one last. At the moment, 8 cores is completely top of the line, and assuming I choose such a model, I will probably have an exceptionally well computer that will last be many, many years.
I am most likely going to at all times be running Windows and Leopard side by side using Parallels and have a game running in Windows and developing, browsing, chatting, watching movies, ventrilo, etc. in the other space.
For this reason, would it be wise to purchase the 8 core model? It is considerably cheaper to add the extra quad core with Apple as it is nearly half the price of one found on newegg or a dell configuration. I really want this computer to last and use it for a long time and play the most top of the line games with my friends such as Age of Conan, Crysis, etc. Also, I will have a 24 inch monitor that I will also need my computer to power.
My current computer cannot even run Age of Conan at the lowest quality settings. I figure if I want to be able to run this game at 1920x1200 resolution in Parallels while running applications on Leopard, shelling out the extra three or four hundred dollars would be worth it. Seeing as I will be using this computer for years, even though most applications do not use 8 cores now, they will then.
I believe that the 4 core model of the Mac Pro does not allow for an additional xeon quad core, so if I did buy the single quad core model, I would not be able to add another quad core, thus limiting me. Also, even if there were, it would void my warranty.
Also, I have heard of the 8800 GT causing some problems in the Mac Pro, typically in the first generation ones, however, I had seen cases of people noting problems in the January edition. I want to do a lot of gaming in this rig, and the 8800 is the de facto card of choice for most gamers, at a reasonable price. However, will it give me problems? I have heard of some people having 0 problems at all with this card. Will it give me those occasional blue and green lines through my monitor? Has Apple fully developed the drivers for this card? Will I have problems with it?
Thanks for any help and I await your responses.

    Fromethius,
you cannot assing CPUs to the VM in Parallels. In VMware you can select 1 or 2 virtual CPU for the guest OS, though that doesn't neccessarily translate 1:1 with your physical CPUs.
As for games, neither VM nor Parallels with run most later games well; remember, shader support is only experimental right now, so your results will vary.
I play games on Mac natively, but it depends on which ones you are after.
The is no problem with the 8800 card. The issues talked about - which is valid - is it's subpar CORE performance. That hopefully will be addressed in a driver, but won't affect you.
As for the system - get all you can afford. Don't wait for 'upgrades' - you'll never buy s system otherwise as something new is always on the way.
I work with a lot of video so I have an 8 core 3.2 with 16GB or RAM - and would never want less. Does that mean you need that? Or someone else doesn't even need more? Not at all - you just need to see what you really mean to do. 4 cores and the 8800 should be just fine for you. IF you can afford the 8 core, in case you will do a lot of work at the same time, great. Otherwise, rather not skimp on memory. Anything under 4GB, IMHO, ain't good enough.
    Cheers,
    dan

  • Which Video Card To Choose?

I am looking to buy a Mac Pro and I'm not sure about what video card to buy. Looking at the Apple onlinstore I can configure with either a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 or the ATI Radeon X1900. My main use will be to run Final Cut Pro and other graphics programs like Flash and Photoshop. Which card is better to have? Also, Why is there an option to buy up to 4 of NVIDIA 7300 cards, but only 1 of the ATI Radeon? What is the advantage of buying multiple NVIDIA 7300 cards? Can you use multiple ATI Radeon cards?
Any help would be great. Thanks!

Get the ATI Radeon X1900 by all means.
    See http://www.apple.com/macpro/graphics.html and
    http://www.barefeats.com/quad05.html
Quoting: …Apple's Mac Pro GRAPHICS page shows the X1900's specs and performance so close to the $1650 Quadro FX 4500 and so far above the GeForce 7300 GT that the choice is a no-brainer for most consumers and professionals.…

  • Which ODBC driver to choose for a multi version , multi home installation

I have a situation where I need to rollout a piece of software which connects to an Oracle 64 bit database. The client group that I need to rollout to includes a combination of Oracle8, Oracle 9 and Oracle 10. Some installations have dual 8/9 Homes and I am sure that there are other combinations.
The software connects through either a normal oracle connection or can connect through ODBC. However, the normal connection software will not connect through Oracle below Oracle 9, So I am left with an ODBC driver. I am using the microsoft driver currently - it is very slow, but it is at least already installed on all the user pc's. However I believe that it does not work with dual homes.
Is there an Oracle driver that would meet our needs?, i.e allow connections from version 8 to 10 with any combination of homes.

You're right that the Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle doesn't support multiple Oracle Homes. It also isn't updated regularly, so it doesn't support a lot of functionality that was added in Oracle 9 or 10.
Exactly what versions of Oracle does "Oracle8" comprise. There is a world of difference between having some 8.1.7 databases still in prod and having some ancient 8.0.4 databases around. Depending on the "Oracle8" variants in the world, you should be able to use either the 8.1.7.x or 9.2.0.x Oracle ODBC driver should work for you. You'll need to install an appropriate Oracle Home for that driver (i.e. the machine will have to have an 8.1.7 Oracle Home if you're going to use the 8.1.7.x Oracle ODBC driver, it'll need a 9.2 Oracle Home if you're going to use the 9.2.0.x Oracle ODBC driver). Since 8.1.7 has been desupported, I'm hopeful that you can use the 9.2.0.x Oracle ODBC driver since Oracle 9.2 will at least be supported a few more months.
