Virtualization disabled on Mac Pro?

This may have been addressed before, but can anyone else confirm that the Mac Pros, when running Parallels, give a message stating that Virtualization technology is disabled, and that putting the machine to sleep and re-awakening it might fix the problem?
Apparently this is an issue with Apple's firmware, according to the Parallels website, and I have indeed tried the sleep "fix", which seems to work.
Not a huge issue, since performance under Parallels is quite acceptable. With luck Apple will have the fix out sometime soon.
PS I did install the EFI update; evidently the fix wasn't in there.

Yes, the Mac Pros require an at-yet-to-appear firmware update to resolve the Virtualization bug.
In the meantime, if you start Parallels (but not the VM), put your machine to sleep, then wake it up and start the VM, it will be enabled. One of the odder aspects of the bug is that starting from a cold boot will disable it but waking from sleep will enable it.

  • Virtualization on a Mac Pro

    Hi,
I am looking at the options of using virtualization on a 8 core Mac Pro. Instead of the solutions like VMWare Fusion I would like to create several virtual machines running independently in the background (database server, webserver, etc) and manage the resources used by each Virtual machine seperately. In the PC world there are several option (like vmware esx or xen) but what are good and supported options for use on a Mac?

I know I've seen threads of someone using Windows 2008 Server (the RC is available for free download) and running their VMs under that.
Maybe something in these: Discussion threads "VT"
The Mac Pro is a great home server machine - twin quad core Xeons, plenty of memory capability, and very quiet. The problem is that by default, Apple doesnt enable the intel VT-X extensions, which are needed to get KVM working.

  • Sound disabled on mac pro? input and output

    hello
I bought my Mac Pro less that 1 year ago.
The sound seems to be disabled. I cannot hear and I cannot be heard. When pushing the relevant buttons to increase or decrease the sound, the screen displays the sound but nothing happens.
    Could you please advise?
    Many thanks!

  • Obsolete new "Mac Pro" vs Windows 6 Core 3930K PC - What should I expect?

OK, I ordered a pretty fast PC from Amazon, kind of a no-name gaming PC but it had great specs, i7 3930 Six Core at 3.2 ghz.
Installed a Nvidia GTX 670, did the supported cards text file hack, and Premiere Pro 5.5 on it, along with Quicktime Pro, and fonts I needed. I also installed a nifty program called X-Mouse which allowed me to customize my logitech scrolling mouse to use Premiere Pro as I also using USB Overdrive on my Mac - indispensable software.
Got a KVM so I could use my 2 large displays currently hooked up to my Mac on the PC without totally disabling my Mac Pro 2008 8 core - it is my workhorse and I use it all the time.
Finally got the PC somewhat functional on with Premiere Pro and even got it working with projects and media via a fast network connection. It seemed like butter vs my old Mac Pro.  My lack of being a Windows power user I'm sure was responsible for my ultimate failure at getting my Windows system, but there could be hardware issues with this particular PC as well. Ultimately it was a total pain to share projects and media that resided on my Mac. Using Premiere Pro on the PC was identical in many ways to the Mac, just faster.
However the PC started going downhill pretty much as I got it working. It wouldn't properly reboot, always spinning in the 'Shutting Down' screen. I had to hard restart it all the time.
Then things started to go south, probably due to system corruption from having to hard reset it. I installed a fresh OS on the other internal drive in hopes it would fix the problems, a whole new set of software to get Premiere Pro working well. Again, shutdown hangs, without any diagnostics other than windows coming up at the hard restart saying there was a problem with the previous shutdown, and wiping out a lot of stuff each time. Then in hopes of curing the ills, a reformat of the drives, reinstallation of Windows 7 Pro, and then the ability to actually install the OS. 2 reformatted drives that cannot b installed with OS. Epic failure. The replacement is on the way.
But this being said, the amount of time in order to make this environment 'cross platform' as well as the indiocyncracies of Windows (to me, I'm not bashing Windows - it seems to be a fine OS!)  makes me rethinking the PC for Premiere Pro switch.
I realize the current Mac Pros are basically obsolete, however, MY Mac Pro really is, it's from 2008 and not the fastest model from that era (2.8ghz 8 core, non threading Xeon.)
Investigating "new" Mac Pros, I can get a 6 Core 3.3 ghz threading Mac Pro plus 32GB of RAM for about $3,500. I can get a 12 Core 3.09 ghz for $6,700 and a refurb 2.93ghz with 32GB for about $5,700. The Windows PC with everything I need is in the $4K range. I don't need any new peripherals to make it a direct replacement for my current Mac Pro, all PCI, peripherals will just work. I'm familiar with the OS, and all my apps and plugins will work, no KVM necessary, no cross platform issues. Just not as cost effective as the PC and perhaps slower.
    However...
Disregarding the cost, my time is valuable and I probably spend a good 3 solid days getting something non functional to work. There will be continual inefficiencies because I'm not a Windows shop, and I don't foresee this.
Will any 'new' Mac Pro, regardless of the cost, get me to the speed using Premiere Pro of this 6 core 3.2ghz i7 3930K? If I get the answer that the Mac 12 core will get me there, it may be a viable option. If the 6 core will get me 80% there, it might be the 'best buy' option.
    Thanks for any advice, really!

Thanks Eric and Harm for the helpful answers. I was hoping that Windows 7 had evolved to the point where knowning and using some of the troubleshooting techniques that Harm mentioned would not have to be necessary. I do have the ability / skill, etc, but not necessarily the desire to troubleshoot, but was kind of hoping that I wouldn't need to get to this level on such a simple installation, really it was just CS 5.5 and Video drivers. It is very possible the KVM was blocking on the USB request. This occasionally will happen with a hung device on Mac OS X and firewire, but usually it times out after a while. However there have been those odd times where I needed to unplug everything and even do a NVRAM reset on the Mac to get it back. This is pretty rare though. I even have my Mac set to 'verbose mode' which leaves the unix console up on boot and shutdown so I can track offending things like this. Maybe there is a Windows equivalent to this, which would have been helpful. Knowing that there might be some request that wasn't returning, I left Windows in this state for hours, it never got back. I had no choice but to hard restart it. I didn't examine logs and such, though I could have. I just want it to work or to fail gracefully, and not fail in such a way that makes it unusable and unrecoverable without in depth troubleshooting. I also have to use the KVM, without it I can't possibly use the system. So if the KVM makes the PC hang, then I can't use the PC. It doesn't make my Mac hang.
I am also quite positive that ADK's systems would have been a lot more robust and their emergency DVD's would have actually been able to help me as well as their expert tech support. I also appreciate that though Eric and ADK are a business, that the advice you have provided to me is just helpful and agnostic. This goes a long way to pushing my next PC purchase in the ADK direction!
Getting back to my original question, which was not one of troubleshooting Windows PC's though that advice is helpful...
Seems like a 12-Core Mac would allow me to edit well. I can edit right now with my 2008 Mac Pro 8 Core with 24GB RAM and 240GB SSD and Quadro 4000 and numerous internal and external RAIDs, but just scrubbing AVCHD I see all 8 processors go to nearly 100 % utilization and it's laggy. Not the best editing experience. If I have a few AVCHDs overlaid, which I do, it's almost unusable. As the Premiere Pro project gets bigger and more complex, it seems that everything gets slower. I have no scientific basis for this but I think it's true. It doesn't have to be just the sequence I'm working on, it seems to be even navigating simple sequences will be laggier if in a larger complex Premiere Pro project file.
On the Windows PC i7, for the few hours it was functioning, I was able to scrub AVCHD 1080P footage over a gigabit ethernet like butter.  I was pleased with this. It was a very simple 1 track sequence, however. I didn't have a chance to try it with more complex projects before it was unusable.
Would I get smooth performance from a Mac Pro 6 Core, which is $2,500 less than the 12 core? From the basic Mac benchmarking I see, I see a 'rating' of 14000 for the Mac Pro 6 Core, and around 9000 for my current Mac Pro 8 core. This is about 50% more. I don't think 50% is going to get me to 'butter.'
Thanks again for all the helpful advice, Harm and Eric.

  • Mac Pro, Windows 7 Virtual PC-XP Mode Problem w/ Hardware Virtualization

I have installed windows 7 (64 bit) on an 8 month old intel mac pro with latest bootcamp. runs great. cannot get virtual pc / xp mode to work.
confirmed latest firmware, confirmed processor has virtualization (vmx listed in processor details when boot to snow leopard).
when i run ms hardware-assisted virtualization detection tool it confirms hardware virtualization. after i install xp mode and virtual pc update i get an error message that there is no virtualization. ms hardware-assisted virtualization detection tool will now also report no virtualization. if i uninstall xp mode and virtual pc update, ms hardware-assisted virtualization detection tool will again confirm virtualization.
any thoughts? i searched forum but did not see anything - sorry if i missed it.
    thanks in advance for input...

Because the hardware of Mac Pro does have Intel-VT capability, it's just disabled.
One solution (though a very lame one) is boot into OS X first, run VMware Fusion or Parallel (which enables Intel-VT), then restart into Windows.
Just hope there would be some way to enable Intel-VT on Windows...

  • Disable Second Monitor Mac Pro

I have a nice new Mac Pro system with the standard Nvidia 7300 Video card. I connected a second dipslay to it today to watch some videos on my 32" HDTV. However I noticed that the video really suffers when both displays are active in extend mode. The video stutters and I encounter a lot of "image slicing" that is really distracting. I found that if I watch the videos in mirror mode everything is fine. Here comes the question is there a way to disable the seond display when I am not using it? I used to do this all of the itme on my Windows box I could just click disable secondary display and it would turn off and I wold be back to a single monitor config without manually unplugging the seond monitor. Anyone got any ideas?

According to this thread, SwitchResX allows you to do exactly what you're looking for.  It's right on the webpage:
You can disable or deactivate a monitor without having to physically unplug it, allowing you to use a laptop in clamshell mode with external monitor, keyboard and mouse

  • Mac Pro as a VMware virtualization workstation

    Hello all,
I've used my Mac Pro quite heavily for virtualization-related tasks, from running a couple of Windows (XP and 7) VMs for various apps I need to support on both platforms.  My virtualization needs are taking a steep increase.  While I'd love a beautiful 12-core monster, can't afford that...yet :-(.  Thinking instead about maxing this one out.  The CPUs are as good as possible I believe, Xeon X5365'[email protected] x8.  Want to upgrade RAM from 12GB to 32GB, add an Apple RAID card (unless someone has a better suggestion?), 4x Seagate Constellation 2TB SAS drives in RAID-0 (I want maximum performance possible, multiple VMs, 12-14 at once, will cause very high I/O usage, capacity and performance are most important to me), I'll backup necessary stuff external via iSCSI SAN.  Does anyone have a better plan for achieving max performance from this workhorse?  Any opinions welcomed!  Thanks.

Whoa!  That sounds like it could be incredibly expensive!  Let's start with the easy stuff! Activity Monitor and the Windows Task Manager inside the virtual machines can inform you of RAM usage and help you decide if that's the better first step.  If you're maxing out your RAM usage within the VMs, they will start using the hard drive(s) as RAM.  That's incredibly slow, because hard drives are a lot slower than RAM. You should also check the settings for RAM allocation for your individual VMs using your virtualization client (VMWare) to make sure they can access as much RAM as the system will comfortably allow.  12 VMs running simultaneously on 12 GB of RAM means that each system will be allowed less than 1 GB.  That's not much for Windows 7.  You also need to remember that your host OS needs RAM, too.  If your RAM allocation settings are less than ideal, adjusting them can provide a tremendous gain in performance for FREE!
I predict RAM will be of greatest benefit to you, and it's cheap, so it's a good place to start. Increasing your RAM alone might give you the performance edge you want without a storage upgrade.  Do keep in mind that adding additional RAM to the system will require you to revisit those allocation settings to make any difference in performance of the VMs (assuming they hit their memory ceilings, which seems quite likely). If you have 32 GB, 14 VMs can use over 2 GB simultaneously and leave plenty of room for the host OS.
As far as storage goes, I'm hearing that the Apple RAID cards are over-priced and the fact that they are internal could make things far more difficult for you.  I'd recommend trying SSD, but the cost/benefit of that will depend on your budget and spatial requirements of your VMs.  I'm also not sure if they can match the reliability of the server-grade rotating storage you have in mind, but theoretically, neither can the hard drive(s) you already have in the machine.
I'd also check out an external solution rather than an internal one:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?sort=pop&model=264&type=Hard+Drive+ Controller
There are many different options for hard drive controllers and you can read reviews for nearly all of them. They're not all equal and there is something different for every budget.
External storage is probably the best solution for you because it maintains the functionality of the internal drives you already have while you migrate to the new system.  In the future, you could continue to use those drives for archival and backup.  Of course, you could always simply migrate a portion of the VMs outside the machine into the external system and use both internal and external systems simultaneously.  When you decide to upgrade the computer, you'll be able to move the card and enclosure to a new machine more easily.
REMEMBER: If you're running a bunch of VMs with high demand for disk I/O, spreading the load over a greater number of hard drives can reduce the queue length for each individual drive and reduce latency. Try using different disks for different VMs.
This my plan of attack for you:
    optimize your RAM allocations
    check your performance
    upgrade your RAM
    optimize your RAM allocations again
    check your performance
run heavy operations and check disk usage in Activity Monitor
if disk usage in Activity Monitor stays pegged at max of drive capability and you have available drive bays, add an aditional internal hard drive, or two, or three.
migrate some of the VMs to the new hard drive(s) and run them from their new locations to test performance again
if you're still not happy, consider RAID and have yourself a good cry when you see the price-tag
I predict you'll be overjoyed by the time you reach step 5.  Just keep in mind, hard drives fail!  Redundancy is important and off-site backup can be a life-saver in case of disaster.
Let me know if this helps! Don't forget, mark this reply as helpful if it helped or correct if I nailed it.

  • Radeon HD 5770 graphics card works perfectly with my MAC Pro 1,1 and Adobe CS6. However, Photoshop CC won't read the card drivers and says I need to reinstall them and disabled 3D funtions as a result. Anyone else with this issue?

Radeon HD 5770 graphics card works perfectly with my MAC Pro 1,1 and Adobe CS6. However, I upgraded to Adobe CC and Photoshop CC disabled some filters and 3D functionality. The preference panel for Performance/Graphics Card in Photoshop CC is greyed out and inaccessible and shows this message -
"Photoshop detected an error in your display driver. Update or reinstall the driver and check Use Graphics Processor to retry."
I still have Photoshop CS6 installed and it still works perfectly. Anyone else with this issue? Is there a driver update for this compatable with my setup?

  • OpenGL being disabled. (MacBook Pro 2008, Mac OS 10.9)

I opened a file I had been working on yesterday on a different Mac, and got the error message: "3D functionality is currently disabled due to OpenGL being disabled." I am currently using MacBook Pro (2008), running Mac OS 10.9, using PhotoShop CC. I've already looked at Ps Preferences>Performance and I see this. (see attachment)
How can this be solved? Thank you.

This is not a new post, but I can't find how to start a new thread.  I'm hopeful that someone will see it and suggest a remedy for my OpenGL not being fully functional.
I'm using a Mac Pro, 16GB dual processor machine in OS X (10.7.5) with a Radeon (Mac Edition) 32 mb AGP Vesrion graphics card.  I suspect that I may be experiencing the same problem as  Anna (above).

  • How can I disable mac pro OSX 'spaces' shortcut keys? (i.e. CTL, Right Arrow)

How can I disable mac pro shortcut keys: CTL right arrow, CTL left arrow, CTL up arrow, CTL down arrow? Currently, they take me from one space to another. (OSX 10.6) Goal is to use these shortcuts for text editing.

    Hi, Simon.
You can instruct iTunes and iPhoto to save their respective libraries to a different disk, e.g. your second hard drive. You can also move existing libraries for these apps to a drive other than your startup disk.
See the links concerning moving these libraries cited in the "More ways to save space if you have a spare partition or second hard drive" section of my "Freeing Space on your Mac OS X startup disk" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • Any software setting to disable 3rd display on a Mac Pro?

    Howdy!
    I have the following setup:
    Mac Pro w/ 2 NVIDIA GeForce 7300s
1 card is powering 2 - 23" Apple Cinema Displays and the 2nd card is powering my Plasma.
The Apple displays run at resolution 1920x1200 and the Plasma runs at 800x600 60Hz. NOTE: I convert DVI down to VGA to run to the Plasma with Apple's adapter.
    The problem:
When uploading MP4 from HD camera to iPhoto, video image not showing in Quicktime on either of the cinema displays. But, audio works fine. If I drag the clip into iMovie HD it does NOT work either, only audio plays.
When dragging and dropping the same video clip into an email (Apple Mail), it will play fine in there. If I drag that Quicktime player over to the plasma display it will play fine there as well.
So, how can I get Quicktime to play on either cinema display at their running resolution of 1920x1200?
Goal: To edit video in iMovie HD.
So, what I want to try is disable the Plasma while I am going to edit my video, but I can't reach around the back of my Tower to unplug the connection for the Plasma. Is there a system pref. I can edit to drop out that third display for a temporary amount of time?
    Thanks!

I don't believe there's a way to disable the port although have you tried disconnecting the cable at the plasma TV end?

  • Disable Mac Pro Ethernet ports

Having installed fiber, I am looking for a method to permanetly remove built-in Ethernet options on Mac Pro running 10.8.

Go to System Preferences->Network and select the Ethernet ports and disable them.  That will turn them off at a software level.
You can't disable them at a hardware level, unless I guess you break out a screwdriver

  • My mac pro shows ECC disabled, is this a problem

i recently upgraded my memory with a 4gb stick and used the existing 1 gb sticks in the other slots.
After assembling the stick, switched on the computer and checked the status. It shows ECC disabled. Is this anything to worry about or, is that how it works.

Your mac is equipped with the substantial Hardware assist to use Error Correcting Code  ECC memory. When the proper modules are installed, single-bit errors are corrected on the fly, and double-bit errors are detected and are intended to cause a kernel panic to avoid propagating the error into the rest of the system and poisoning the data on your Hard drive.
If ECC has been turned off, there is a major problem in your memory subsystem, and you are now "working without a net".
    YES, this is a problem.
Undo whatever changes you made and get the correct memories for your Mac Pro Tower.

  • Disabled sleep, but mac pro still sleeps!

I've got a Xeon Quad Core Mac Pro, running 10.5 Server (10.5.5 to be specific)
This computer provides services for a small office network, and I've disabled sleep, but it still goes to sleep sometimes. I went into System Preferences --> Energy Saver and disabled sleep. Below you can see in system.log when the computer went to sleep this morning. How do I definitively disable sleep?
I wish I knew what "Previous Sleep Cause: 5" meant, so at least I could know what triggered the event.
    Thanks for any leads.
If this is the wrong forum, please advise where would be more appropriate.

  • Enable Hardware Virtualization On Mac Pro 8 Core (Early 2008)

    Hi,
Has anyone has any success enabling the Intel VT-X feature on the Xeons on the Mac Pro (Early 2008, 8 core Xeon)? The VMWare ISO indicates that its turned off on all cores, and NOT locked. VMWare confirms that its not enabled, by not allowing me to boot a 64bit guest OS.
Has anyone had any success? ive got the latest EFI BIOS, hoping that it would fix it (like a BIOS upgrade did aparently for the Mac Mini).
As the feature bit is not locked, maybe there is a way of doing it in software (normally the BIOS turns the feature on or off, then locks it, the lock holding until the next cold boot). We would need ring0 access to the processor.
Alternatively, there is a EFI exe floating around that aparently enabled it for the Mac Mini (on old firmware with the bug).
Whats the best way to report this to Apple? do they have a history of fixing user-reported issues?
    Thanks
    George
