Virtualization on an iMac. I need help.

I have an iMac running 10.6.2. Can anybody tell me if it's possible to run Parallels Desktop or Virtual Box software with another Mac system - OS X 10.4. I can't seem to get any help from their respective sites. I have tried vmware but they are not answering my e-mails. It's very frustrating. I hope someone here knows the answer

Sadly, it was an iMac that was running Tiger, and it died. The drive (with the system software) is all OK but I have nothing to use it in. I don't think I can load the Tiger disks on my very old G4, as they are iMac install disks. Unfortunately the iMac 10.6.2 wasn't planned for, hence these teething problems.
Thanks for you help. Hopefully I can get something sorted - somehow
Do you actually need to run some apps that won't run under 10.6? Or do you just need access to the files? If the files, you could just put the hard drive in an external case and attach to the new Mac. If you want to run apps that don't work in 10.6, then perhaps you can find a used Mac. The way that Dropbox works is that it keeps a copy of all your files in your local Dropbox folder on your hard drive (which is, by default, directly under your home folder). Adding files to that folder will sync them to the Dropbox server.
You do of course have to download the Dropbox application to enable this (download link at the top right of http://dropbox.com ).

  • Transferring files from macbook to imac. Need Help !!!!

Okay i will make this as short as possible. I was using a macbook to do imovie. My father bought a new 27 inch imac. Well I got his 24" imac. Stoked and boy what a difference !! On the old one I used an external hard drive and woking and saving off of that. When I got my new imac, I bought a new external hard drive. First I plugged in my old one to new imac. Transferred movies over. Then plugged in new external hard drive to imac, and put movies on there. I am a videographer for a few surf teams and I was working on a movie and noticed that some sessions were not on there. So I plugged in old external hard drive to macbook and there they were. turned both machines off unplugged both external hard drive. Plugged old external hard drive into imac and they were not there. I am using ilife 11 and am on 10.6.5. Sorry it was so long, just wanted to give all my info to make it easier to answer. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this whether you answer or not, much appreciated.

    Really strange.
I suggest perhaps attaching the old ext HDD to the MB and the new ext HDD to the iMac and connecting the two Macs with an ordinary ethernet cable. Go to Finder/Help menu/Mac Help/Index/E/Ethernet for an article about making a network with two Macs and an ethernet cable. Then go to Index/S/Sharing to find out how to configure your two Macs to share files with each other.
With the network and sharing hopefully you can now see the files that you need on the MB/old HDD and can drag & drop them to the new iMac/new HDD.

I am using iMac OS 10.7.2 with Garageband'11 6.0.4. I can't record sound from  mixer Behringer X1622USB using USB out. when I connect the mixer to iMac via USB  appears USB Audio CODEC on Sound and Preferences but I can't get no sound from mixer to iMac only sound from iMac to mixer. I only can record sound using microphone line in. Please help.

    Eric,
Thanks for your reply. Realtek audio works only in playback. There is a stereo mix in the mixer but the recording controls are not operable with no sliders in the mixer for any recording option. Slider controls appear to be grayed out. Can't figure out how to enable them. Downloaded newest drivers to no avail.
The M Audio control panel has no apparent option for recording stereo mix. Adobe ignores the sound from the DVD or CD and shows flatline.
I'm trying to record the sound from the DVD not rip the track.
When I go to Audio Driver Setup and select Audition 3.0 windows sound, there is no input device installed.
I'm thinking of going back to a decent internal Soundblaster card like I have on my 8 year old machine I am replacing.

  • IMac Novice Needs Help

My first desktop was a Macintosh. Since then I have had 22 years of PC's. I am back now with my new iMac but my machine appears to be running slow. Will an upgrade in memory from 512 MB improve performance? The price of an upgrade at the Apple store is $600 for 2x1GB. Are there better alternatives? Where should I shop?
Thanks so much. I appreciate your help.

    Hi again,
I agree with Glor re: MS Apps...
But the searches you're doing should go rather quickly. You can try downloading a different browser like Firefox and see if that helps speed up your internet experience. Personally, I like Safari and have not had any problems, I also use Firefox as well.
One last thing to look into is tuning up your machine: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/performance.html - follow the link at "Perform regular maintenance", I use the Terminal method, and found my iMac runs very consistently, quieter and a bit quicker...

I found the Epson web site to have a very useful article on color management that shows the various setup boxes in PhotoShop CS you need to set, where to put in the correct icc file for the Epson paper you are using, etc. I found that after I got all of the boxes checked correctly, my Epson Stylus Photo R1800 produces great prints with very close match to the monitor (I use Adobe RGB 1998 throughout).

  • Lemon 20" iMac? Need Help

    Hello,
We have had a first gen iMac since Feb of this year. It was flawless until August. Since then the Logic board was replaced because the fans wouldn't spool up enough to keep it cool. When we received it back the wireless reception sucked until a undate now it ***** again. The unit has never went to sleep on it's own since the LB replacement. A week and a half ago it started a random shutdown, Apple replaced the power supply last week and tonight it shut down twice again.
    Is this thing a lemon?
We have converted the whole household over to Mac. This iMac, my Macbook, the kids 12" iBook, with two iPods. To date my MB has seen service for heatsink sensor and the above frustration with the iMac.
Are we asking to much to has something we paid that much for just work. Do you think Apple will exchange this unit or allow us to pay the difference to go up to a 24"?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Hi KamikazeKunze, first of all, you should post this in the iMac G5 Discussion since you mentioned it is a "first gen iMac", I am going to assume that... unless it is not, and you meant the 1st series Intel iMac, which uses the Core Duo chip.
Okay, nevertheless, I share your sentiments and normally under this kind of circumstances where you have numerous repairs in and out of the tech service centre that made you loose confidence and perhaps even frustrated with the product.
But you have to relax, chill and think that, this is just a computer, and generally, Apple make good Macs, it is just probably your slightly "bad luck" that you have to go through this...
I am not sure about U.S. and/or Denver's product warranty or customers' rights, whether you bought the mac directly from an Apple Store or a "3rd party" Apple Reseller... like Amazon for example.
What I would encourage you, but require your lengthy talk with the store manager or someone who has the authority, looking at what you have been through, that perhaps they can give you an exchange of a new Mac, or even what you wish for, an upgrade.
    Good luck and cheers

  • Screen is permanently black on my iMac 2011, need help

Hi guys, I have an iMac 2011 21" and it works really great, I have bootcamped it for some games which also works great. But today I when I was rebooting to Windows after I had updated the Mac a problem occured. As the computer shut down in Mac mode the screen went black as normally, and it began starting in Windows mode, the startup sound came as normal but the screen stayed black. I waited for a few mins and it remained black. I restarted it and the startup sound came as usual but again, no lights. The computer was pretty hot when i felt it also, could that be a cause? I tried removing the loadcable completely for like 10 mins and started it again, same problem. I also can't see anything on the screen if i have light from a flashlight, I tested the Alt + CMD + P + R combo and it didn't work. Tested to put the Mac disc in and press C at startup, didn't work.
And also, the computer is working, because I can hear sounds (lower and higher the volume) and i pressed some keys and then Enter, and the "failure" sound came. Also, I'm not 100 % sure if the computer is in Windows or Mac at the moment, even though it was going to boot in Windows, it feels like it's in Mac, because there were no Windows sounds.
Please help me, thanks in advance!
    - Axel

Try booting up in  Safe Mode , it will take longer than normal but does stuff during that time. If it isn't on in a couple of minutes we have a problem. If safe mode doesn't help try this reset:
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.
If that doesn't help you may be experiencing a video failure.

  • Imac newbie needs help please...

Hi - first, I know 'nothing' about macs, but I know PC stuff pretty well. I'm asking this question for a friend who knows 'nothing' about computers at all. Here goes...
My friend inherited an imac. I haven't seen it, but someone told him it is an "original" Imac with OS7. He "thinks" it has a USB port, and it must have a dialup modem since the previous owner went online with it. I don't think it has an ethernet port (would a model this old come with ethernet?)
My friend lives in an area with free WiFi service.
His question is... can his Imac use this free service - and, if so, how can he do it? He asked a guy at a mac store and was told that he would need OS9 to use the free wifi. Is that true? Isn't there a way he could buy an external wireless modem and somehow get the wifi signal?
Sorry I don't know more about his mac - hopefully if you need more info I can get it from him - just lemme know what you need to know, and how he can find it.
    Thanks,
    Donk
Imac   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
All iMacs have at least 10/100BaseT Ethernet.
All iMacs have at least 2 USB(1.1) ports.
The earliest iMac shipped with OS 8.6.
The earliest iMac that had WiFi was the 400MHz model in around 1999. This model too shipped with a version of 8.6 although most iMac 400MHz shipped with OS 9. WiFi is certainly available in OS 9 but I'm unsure about OS 8.
All iMac CRT/G3 specs can be found here. This should give you a better idea what you're dealing with.
Your friend would also need either a USB/WiFi adaptor (this will be a pita as drivers that old will be difficult to find) or preferably a Ethernet/Wifi adaptor (aka Wireless Bridge); nil drivers required.
You don't need a modem to access a WiFi network.
WiFi on a Mac is called Airport.<p<p>So...
Get a copy of OS 9 here ($33 and then use the free updates here.
and a Wireless Bridge from any computer store.
These are old old computers now and getting them to play with modern kit can be a challenge. However their is a wealth of experience on these discussions so feel free to ask questions.

  • Firewire port on my iMac. Need help troubleshooting

I've been attempting to troubleshoot this issue for the past month, with no real solution or or glint of hope!
I'm having issues using my Motu firewire audio interface with my iMac (*late 2006 24" iMac*). Once the unit is connected to my iMac, it starts turning on and off. The same interface work flawlessly with two other macs. I've done the following sofar:
    - re-installed audio drivers multiple times
    - SMC resets many times (have lost count)
    - Fresh new OS install
    - Different firewire cables. Even tried the FW800 port.
I'm beginning to suspect the problem is with the power flow out of the Firewire port, since when the mac is shutdown, I still get the same problem when the interface is connected to my mac.
Firewire drives work fine. No problems. So its not a problem with firewire devices not mounting. I'm truly stumped!! Not sure why this is happening. Any info or technical advice is greatly appreciated.
    thanks;
    John

im having a similar problem the only difference is, the power stays on two interfaces the motu ultralite and the fw solo by m-audio but they dont show that there connected, with both the software and the system, any ideas??? anyone??? can my firewire be fried already? the cpu is almost 2 years old!

  • IMAC ?- Need help!

    Hello,
I am currently looking to buy a new mac,I am torn between the 21.5 and 27 Imac. My only concern is my desk situation.. Our desk has a large hutch above it, the 27 inch mac is 20.4 inches tall, the hutch height is 22 inches. Do you think the 1.5 in height inches will be enough for the 27 Inch imac to vent hot air? or should we go with a 21.5 highest end with SDD to make sure the air flow is good. There is also a good 6 inches of space that will be behind the imac. any thoughts?
    Thanks!!!

I think the amount of space behind the iMac is more important than the amount above it.  I think as long as there is some clearance on the sides, and you don't block air coming in from the bottom, I don't think it's an issue.
On the other hand, maybe better safe than sorry.  And you'd save some serious coin by getting the smaller iMac.

  • Need help broadcasting A/V from iMac to TV

Sup Apple! PC here, don't hold it against meh!
My sister has an  iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010) w/ the i5. She wants to mirror her pc to her TV but there are considerations. I need help finding the best wireless solution.
    Here are the facts:
    No HDMI port on iMac
Has HughesNet satellite as her ISP
    Wifi speeds vary with cloudcover
The machine is 30 ft away not direct line of sight
I've looked at Apple TV, and AirPlay only ccovers 2011 models and up.
So assuming I run a mini displayport to HDMI converter from Mac to a Transmitter...I'll get pic only, how do you think the best way is to stream audio and video to the TV? I'm not familiar with FireWire 800, and I see the Optical Out, but for now I have her ordering something that will get Pic only, as she needs to showcase photography.
There's gotta be a device I am unaware of that will handle both audio and video... with the HughesNet consideration, is it even worth it?
This is what transmitter/receiver I'm looking at, http://www.nyrius.com/products/display.php?id=123&i=3
Any better ideas? Am I missing anything elusively obvious here?
    Thanks in advance ,

I've read that Airparrot works well with Apple TV for macs that don't support mirroring. http://www.airsquirrels.com/airparrot/

  • Need help with my iMac ... it keeps freezing up on me no matter what I do.

    Hello all,
I need help to figure out why my iMac keeps on freezing up on me. I used to have Norton SystemWorks installed but I recently uninstalled it because I found out it was poison to Mac OS X. I've used Memtest to check the memory in my iMac. The result of the test came up fine.
You can go to 'Cooling fans for iMac?' (one of my post) to read all of the solutions I have tries out. This post is the original post to try to fix the problem but it FAILED.
In the last week, I've backed up all of my data to my external hard drive. Then I totally erase my internal hard drive and made sure to zero out the drive. After, I proceeded to install Mac OS 9. I had some problems installing the system at first. I finally installed Mac OS 9 and upgraded it to the latest version of 9. Next, I tried to install Mac OS X 10.3 with difficulty. I then finally installed it. I notice during and after installing the both OSs, my iMac keep on freezing. After I installed Mac OS X 10.3, I updated the OS. And yes, while updating the OS, I've experience the same problem as before. I now have my system back to where it was before I did a fresh install of both Mac OS 9 and X.
You guest it, my iMac is still freezing up on me no matter what I do. Can someone please help me with this problem? Can he/she tell me what is going on with my iMac and how to fix it? All the help I can get would be appreciated. Thanks for you time and effort.
P.S. After trying all of the previous suggestions from other users, I came to an conclusion that one of the hardware in my iMac my be failing. I know for curtain it is NOT my memory. It my be something else inside my iMac.

    Rainbow -
I've read the thread you linked to above and the only thing I find missing in the saga is any mention of the PRAM battery. If it is depleted (and it would be getting close to depletion if it has never been replaced) it could be causing your problem.
Do you see any strangeness in the time or date displays? That would be a sure sign that the battery is dying. I haven't run into the problem of a bad battery causing constant freezing but it wouldn't hurt to check it out.
As far as temperature effects, the usual pattern of overheating would be a shutdown of the whole computer, a designed-in precaution.
Forgive the battery tutorial if you've already dealt with that possibility.
