Virtualize OS X while booted in Windows 7

Hey, I was wondering if it was possible to virtualize OS X FROM Bootcamp. I know you can virtualize windows 7 via the bootcamp partition using VMWare Fusion, but I was wondering if there was a similar solution for Windows to access my OS X partition from within windows without having to create a virtual machine and that allows full read/write capabilities to the partition. Google says practically nothing on this, (or I haven't been able to find anything...) so please let me know if this is possible. It would be wonderful to be able to access my OS X partition while using windows.

Why not start a new thread? this one is getting close to a year old....
MacIntouch had a lot of reader input on the subject.
My take was, all the talk of virtualizing was an OS X host AND client.
Such as running SL as a guest under Lion.
You have three vendors that would know more, though under wraps or in the works and in beta and NDA most likely.
What I don't see happening is running OS X in any fashion under another non-Mac OS (Windows, Linux etc).
I detest the use of the name "boot camp" it is fuzzy and confuses rather than clarifies.
People run Windows Server 2008 natively on Mac, then run multiple VMs for Windows.
VMs are popular, more cost effective, can be moved around, reconfigured, moved to high speed storage when needed, on the fly.
I don't see taking a physical OS used both native and in VM except Mac products.
Paragon converts VMware VMs and others like Oracle to or from a VM to a physical partition, yes.
If it happens, it will be on VMware and Parallels as well as on the front page of your news sites, from Computerworld to rumormill most assuredly.

  • How do I access the music from my Mac drive while booted into Windows?

How do I access the music from my Mac drive while booted into Windows via Bootcamp? I tried using MacDrive but it's not supported for Vista 64-bit edition. Is there another program out there that I can use? I just want to be able to access my music that's on Leopard while in Vista. Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Your best bet is to move the music on the Windows side since Leopard will be able to read and play the music from the mounted Windows drive (Leopard will not be able write anything to the Windows NTFS partition).
In your case it won't work the other way around.

  • Windows 8.1 freezes while booting up with discrete graphic card T520

    Hi all,
Hoping someone can help me here. If I use my discrete video card (nvs 42000m) to boot into windows, it will freeze on the sign in page or sometimes on the metro page however when Optimus is enabled it works just fine.
So I thought it was a driver issue. I went to Nvidia and downloaded their latest video card driver for windows 8.1. No help
Uninstalled that, went to Lenovo's support site and installed their recommended driver and all other windows 8 drivers. Again it would freeze
Booted into safe mode uninstalled that, turned optimus back on, and this time used Windows update to install my video drivers (intel and Nvidia both this time).
Didn't work. So I spent maybe another hour or so fiddling and after many restarts i finally found the culprit. It was the Lenovo monitor driver. As soon as I uninstalled that, everything worked fine and I could finally use my laptop with optimus disabled and discrete video card enabled.
Windows update keeps recommending me to update the monitor driver but if I do, then it freezes again so I'm just leaving it as the default generic monitor.
The reason why I made this thread is to inform and save potential users in the future who have a similar laptop to mine (t520 with hd 3000 and nvidia 42000m) with Windows 8 installed and they happen to choose to solely run their laptop with the discrete graphics card, remember to uninstall your monitor driver.
I am open to recommendations and other alternatives.

  • Immensly long black screen with white underscore while booting Windows 7.

I've heard of some people having the same problem, I also looked through this forum, but the the solution I found here didn't work for me.
I can't run the command sfc/scannow in command promt because it says i must have administrator priveleges and enter a console session.
Any advice on how to enter it, or solve this problem would be more then welcome!

You always need to run CMD.exe as Administrator.
Try holding down control + click when you select it.
Also, boot from Windows 7 DVD and choose system repair.
If it started after some point in time, installed something, try the last restore check point.
Have you ever scheduled a disk check? Properties for your C: boot drive - hardware is always good to do once.

  • If I want to run OSX Server and also want to run Windows 8 on Boot Camp, will server still run when I boot into windows?

I want to set up OSX Server on my iMAC running Mavericks and also install Windows 8 on Boot Camp.  If I do this and boot into Windows, will that prevent server from running while I'm in Windows?

No.  Bootcamp, as you've described, requires rebooting into your chosen operating system.  If you want to run both OS X and Windows at the same time from your hardware, look at virtualization tools like Parrallels or VMWare.

  • My HP Pavailion 15-n020tu Stuck at Booting in Windows 8.1 Pro when I enable Hyper-V?

    Hi,
I'm using HP Pavailion 15-n020tu Stuck at Booting in Windows 8.1 Pro when I enable Hyper-V. And I have to enable Hyper-V to test my Windows Phone Apps in MS Visual Studio? Mty friend Dell Laptop does not facing this problem with same configuration which I have. Then why me are facing this problem?
    Help Me?
I tried on Windows 8 Pro but again same problem.
So many things I tried updating Windows, Updating drivers but failed.

    Hello @Vikas_Kumawat80,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand that you are looking to enable Virtualization on your notebook computer, and I would be happy to be of assistance!
While I do not have any experience with Virtualization, I do recommend taking a look at this resource on How to Enable and Use Client Hyper-V, as well as Run virtual machines on Windows 8.1 with Client Hyper‑V. I am not certain if this processor has hardware virtualization support, it appears that Windows 8.1 pro and enterprise may have built in capabilities.
If you require further assistance on this, you might have to contact Microsoft on the topic.
    I hope this helps!

  • Can only boot into Windows 7. Can't even boot from Snow Leopard DVD.

I have no idea what prompted this. I don't recall installing any OS updates recently, other than some Windows Live apps in Windows 7.
I have an early 2009 Mac Mini with Snow Leopard, and have Windows 7 64-bit installed in a Boot Camp partition. When I installed Windows 7, I couldn't get the Boot Camp utility to install within Windows (I guess because it's 64-bit) so to switch back and forth between OSes, I just shut down the Mac and restart it with the Option key pressed, and select Mac OS X when I want to return to Mac. This has worked for about a month and a half now (ever since I got Windows 7). Suddenly I have problems.
I first had problems booting into Windows or Mac. I got to the grey screen with the Apple logo, with that spinning "progress" thing going for a while, then it would freeze up and get stuck on the grey screen with the Apple logo. I zapped the PRAM. No help. Then, after disconnecting all external drives (I have several) and extra USB devices, I was able to boot from the DVD install disk and reinstall Snow Leopard on my internal drive. Joy, or so I thought. Then I booted into Windows 7, and after some weirdness getting it to start, it did successfully start and ran just peachy.
Then I turned off the Mac and held down the option key (as usual) to return to Mac OS. But now all that happens is that I get a grey screen for a few seconds, then the Mac boots back into Windows 7, which seems to work fine. (I'm in Windows 7 right now.) I turned on one my external drives (Snow Leopard installed, connected via Firewire 800) in hopes that the Mac would boot into that, but same thing. Ignored and back to Windows 7.
Then I thought I'd boot from the install DVD again by putting it in the drive and holding down the C key as I restart, but the same thing--a grey screen for a few seconds, and then booting right into Windows 7. I can't seem to escape Windows 7! It's a bit disturbing when it won't even recognize the install DVD.
I tried to call Apple Care since I'm within my 90 day support window, but of course they are closed. I'm figuring that I'm going to have to take this into an Apple Store, but thought I'd see if anyone has any ideas. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

According to Apple, Win 7 64bit is supported with Bootcamp 3.0. If bootcamp 3.0 is available; I could not find it anywhere on Apple's website. It appears the most recent version is 2.2. The only place I could find 3.0 is not on Apples website and it's a questionable source so I won't post it here.
It may just be a matter of time before Apple makes it available. I'm not suggesting you wait, however if the install disk can't be used, I'm not too sure where u could go from there. Calling Applecare might work.
If you do a simple google search using the terms 'download bootcamp drivers windows 7' u will see what I was referring too.
Here's what I found from Apple (It doesn't specifically mention 64bit however just win7): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3920
This is not from Apple, but specifically addresses whether they support win7 64bit: http://www.macnn.com/articles/09/08/31/boot.camp.win.7.64.support/
Here is more info about bootcamp 3.0 and win7: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

  • Satellite M40-256 - error while booting via CD

    Hello,
a well-known friend owns Satellite M40-256 which has Windows problem (error while updating/handling by her children).
She doesn't own an external Toshiba FDD or ODD. Also this portable has no built-in FDD. Buying one only for this issue? NO
The boot priority has been changed to: CD-network-HDD.
I've tried another non Toshiba branded ODD (in BIOS not mentioned/found)
The original ODD works/boots in another pc (via adapter) very great.
Ive tried several CD/DVDs to boot from (no error displayed): instant-Linux like knoppix, suse, other windows CDs, recovery CD, ... no success
Every time the same result: the laptop has a black screen, the ODD speeds up and after about 3 to 5 seconds windows starts with the black-white progress bar.
I also tried to press C to force booting from CD.
Some time ago, I had only access to windows in secured mode. But after uninstalling some updates it ends in a licence problem. This issue can be only solved by booting windows-cd via cd.
It has a Toshiba bios 1.00 (interesting, seems quite old).
I've trying at the moment to boot via network. Does the Toshiba show some messages about succeeding/failing at boot via network or CD?
Has setting the execution bit an influence on behaviour?
Does anybody know a solution booting windows?
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for help.
I will look for an other ODD from Toshiba trying for boot.
Does the toshiba bios show messages about booting via cd or network? Even choosing network ends in a faulty Windows boot.
After choosing an item there's no message while booting
As I mentioned: the most interesting issue is ODD works/boots well via adapter in a normal pc and also after windows has been started (secured mode). But no boot possible.
I suspect meanwhile BIOS or Mainboard. But is there a chance for update in secured mode? (the only thing it starts is "secured with prompt"). Cats bites itself in tail.
BIOS also was saved with default setup. Nothing changed.
In event viewer I've found entry about probs with hard-drive and controller.
Does a destructive data processing influence the toshiba bios

I'm sorry if this is a noob question. Where do I type sudo su because as soon as the OS is booted, the system asks localhost login and password. I haven't installed any desktop environment yet. I only set up a password under arch-chroot but I can't login with and without that password.
I was assuming a normal installed environment with a normal user. Using "sudo su", you can abuse privileges granted by sudo to circumvent the password required by su. A well configured sudo should not allow this, but in this case it seemed likely that the system was not completely set up yet.

  • Error while installation of windows 8

    Hi friends,
i have MSI FX400 pre-loaded with windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. now I want to upgrade to windows 8. While i boot with windows 8 USB boot able image it gives system crash error and gets restart.
After so much surfing  i found a tool to check win8 compatibility, which says your system firmware does not support secure boot hence you cant install win 8 in your machine
Amazingly before release i installed win 8 developer edition in the same machine and it was working awesome...
Can any one help me for the same?
My current firmware in 1481.411 & BIOS is 1481-105.
I tried to find the update of the same but no success till now.

    Hi,
thanks to the steps of the webpage you have posted I´ve seen the code of the error in the log of my computer:
error 0x80073D0A: when trying to install the package XXXXXXXX, the system couldn´t register the extension windows.repositoryExtension owing to the next error: The package couldn´t be installed because the service "Firewall of Windows" is
not running. Enable the service "Firewall of Windows" and try again.
It matches with one of the codes of your link.
I think this question should be fixed. I (and I suppose much more people) already have a Firewall different than Microsofts´one and I want to have access to the Windows Store running only my "third-part firewall". Having two Firewalls running is a waste
    of resources.
    Regards.

  • Boot Camp Windows 7 No Longer Connects to Internet

Hello, I have a mid 2011 iMac with Boot Camp Windows 7 installation.  It has run flawlessly for more than a year.  Recently however, I have been untable to connect to internet when running Windows.  The connection works fine as a Mac.  While in Windows, I can momentarily (about 10 seconds) connect by disconnecting and reconnecting the LAN cable.  Then the "no internet."  I have all the latest Boot Camp support software installed.  All MAC and Windows software updates are installed.  My network devices are configured correctly.  I have rolled back to previous Windows updates with no resolution.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

your router, your Windows firewall, you are using something other than Windows Defender (8) or Essentials (7), something else on the cable.
you had a storm and the modem is on life support and your ISP can login and see what errors the modem is showing, you don't have network surge protection (APC tend to interfere, Cyberpower tend to work).
What else is on the LAN?
I found Windows to be funny about network but 8 and 8.1 have never had trouble. With 7 I sometimes had to reboot.
Besides Apple and Windows, some drivers are or often still needed - manually.

  • Hi, I have a hard disk failure so to recover my data I am using disk utility to restore the data on an external drive while booting from a second external hard drive. When I perform the operation it gives me an input/output error and stops. Any tips?

Hi, I have a hard disk failure so to recover my data I am using disk utility to restore the data on an external drive while booting from a second external hard drive. When I perform the operation and after having selected both my destination and source drives, the operation begins but soon fails due to input/output error. If I try to create an image of the drive it gives me the same error message. Any help would be much appreciated.

Disk Utility only creates a image of the drive, so it's no help getting exactly what you want, which is your files. If the file structure is messed up or the drive is failing then it's no help.
If you have a external boot drive and you can't access the internal non-booting drive though the typical Finder and windows to transfer your files via drag and drop methods, then you need to install Data Rescue on the external boot drive and it will do as best as it can to recover your files. (works on non-encrypted/non-Filevaulted drives only)
.Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Are you sure you have hard drive failure, or that OS X isn't merely not booting?

  • Can't boot into Windows??

Hi!! This is my theory about not being able to boot into windows. If you have made a system repair disc like you should have made on day one; and your PC will not boot with the system repair CD, you probably have some serious hardware problems.
I'm going to steal this reply from cee64 again. A system repair CD can be made from any PC that is running W7 ect.
Hi I'm going to steal this reply from cee64. I'm sure he won't mind!
"It is quite possibly the hard drive is failing or has failed.  The reason you can't get into the bios or boot from a CD/DVD is because the bios it hanging trying to recognize the hard drive.  Try removing the hard drive and see if it will allow you into the bios or boot to a CD/DVD.  If it does, go the hard drive manufacturer's support site, downlod their hard drive diagnostic ISO image, then use the burn from image option to create the self booting cd, then boot to it and run the most exhaustive diagnosis on it if it will boot.  If you can't get it to boot to the diagnostic disk while the hard drive is installed you'll more than likely need to replace the hard drive.
If it won't get you into the bios or boot to a CD/DVD with the hard drive out of the system you need to try reseating the ram.  If that doesn't help you probably have a bad motherboard.  In this case it would more than likely be cheaper to just replace the laptop than fix it."
    http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-use-a-system-repair-disc-to-restore-windows.html
If Seatools found your HD good, then you have a good chance of using the recovery disks or the recovery partion to restore you back to factory setting. If that fails, you may be down to a bad motherboard. I know of no program to test the MB. You can use memtest 86 to test your Ram. I think it tests some parts of your MB, but can't say that for sure.

Let's start here. The spec above says your machine came with 32-bit Windows Vista. Have you changed it?
We need to reach the recovery environment. Can you do it this way?

If not, burn a system repair disc from this download (assuming 32-bit Windows).

  • H9-1150 PC wont Boot with WIndows 7 Premium 64 bit with ASUS 960 GTX Card.

I saw others have posted simular issues but i thought id repost this again in case there is more help.  I have the Pavalion Elite Phonix h9-1150 desktop with Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit.  and the HP 7.07 bios (seems no way to upgrade  the bios).
The issue is like others have had i install the new graphics card the Asus 960 GTX Card which came out last month and the system starts up  gives about 3 beeps in about 30 seconds each and then it goes to a black screen with a blinking curser and nothing else happens. cant enter bios or  the HP settings..
I did try to disable UEFI boot devices in the bios settings and only enable legacy devices (after switching back to my original card then switching to the new card) but it still gives the 3 beeps upon booting.   However i was able to enter windows. though i think it may be due to shutting off the computer with the old card in without powering down first. and  after the 3 beeps happens (which still locks you out of the bios menu) it shows up the window where you can select safe mode or normal mode.. as sometimes happens if you boot up your computer with windows 7 if you had just turned it off without powering down or something.  Through that i am able to enter windows and run the PC and graphics card with no issue its just when i try to boot the issue happens.
and No HP suppor it is NOT a defect with the Card itself. Like many before. i bought a EVGA Card a while back a 780 GTX and the SAME issue happend (though i didnt try the removing the UEFI boot devices then) ...
There is a spacific issue with HP computers that seem to lock out "new" hardware from booting.
Honestly ill be blunt. I really think this is poor doings I read somewhere that while HP will never state it they do this on purpose to prevent people messing up warrenty or any "liabity" occuring by people installing other hardware onto HP stock computers
that makes no since to me.  the PC SHOULD be able to run the card. in fact its running it now once i was able to bypass the lock out (temporarly)  check benchmarks everyhting is fine the card runs 3 times faster  then the old one (as should be the case).
But its just this lockout that HP for some reason has installed on their bios/motherboards that is the issue.
Good news is i got it from amazon and i have about a month till i have to return it. which i think this time i will do.  to see if anything crops up in a month or something.
The ONLY solution it seems HP offically has is that to disable secure boot under windows 8
but this is not a windows 8 computer. and i do assume even if iINSTALL windows 8 . the issue would not go away because since its an older bios there would be no way to have a secure boot option to remove?
HP you really need to get on the ball and give us a direct reply on this.  Is there ANY WAY to fix this? Can you not simply  make a update of older bioses to allow this? Or do you just not want to worry about older pCs?
either way i think this is wrong and very frustrating and to be honest. If this is the case when my pc otherwise SHOULD run the card
its a PCI express 16x slot that is 3.0
here is the deetailed specs as per your page
    http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c03273835
the card SHOULD WORK fine.  I thought the 780 GTX was a bit too much for the PC as it had more then a six pin port and needed a bit more power so at first i thought that was the issue. so i returned it. and got this new card now.
however the ASUS 960 GTX card requires the SAME power supply as the default GTX 550 Ti card and the SAME SIX PIN connector
    so it SHOULD work.
and benchmarks show that it DOES its just the stupid bios ..that is having the issue.
i am afraid to power down the computer at the moment and try again to see if windows boots normally after disabling the UEPI boot devvices because it may not boot  properly.......
HP you are one of the biggest suppliers of computers you know technology these are YOUR computers.  WHY cant you give us a direct awnser over this.
    ITS VERY frustrating
and to be honest if i cannot resolve this issue i am very hestient to ever buy another HP product if their computers spacifically have this new hardware lockout mode.
because i have the card running now on my pc it runs great! 3 times faster as it should! and yet i know in the back of my mind if i cant figure out this issue likely ill just have to send it back.........least i have some time.
and right now i dont have the money to buy a new pc . this PC is JUST fine for what i need for now other then wanting a bit better card...
it shoudnt be this much of a hassle should it?
    Thank you.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi,
You need the BIOS update that is listed under Windows 8 in order to support the newer graphics.   You need to upgrade to Windows 8 or temporarily install Windows 8 so that you can install the BIOS update.  While there may be other ways to install the BIOS update, clearly having Windows 8 running will be the safest way.  The version 8 BIOS is your best chance at getting the newer graphics cards to work.
You can trial Windows 8 Enterprise for 90 days.
If you decide to install W8, then create the HP external recovery media and backup your data before you do anything.
The reality is that there is no guarantee that any particular graphics card will work in any particular PC even if the graphics card works in other PCs or even the same or similar model PCs. Know what the return policy is before you buy.
