Virtualize SAP/DB2

Hi all,
I'm looking for documentation about Virtualization in a  SAP/DB2 with
Power6 systems. Is this environemt certified by SAP on this hardware.
I mean virtualize over all (CPU, memory, etc.) and virtualize over LAN, SAN.
Is this possible and also certified by SAP.
Best regards,
Joachim Müller

Hello Joachim,
we have a wealth of customer experiences on fully virtualized POWER5 environments and recommendations, how to set this up.
POWER6 provides additionally features like partition mobility (moving a live SAP system in an LPAR from one box to another without downtime) which allows improved continuous availability for the business departments.
SAP supports that fully without restrictions. We have also the possibility to monitor such dynamic environments integrated in CCMS (SAP Note 994025)
If you want the customer experience documents, please send me a mail and I can send them to you.
Kind Regards,
Irene Hopf.

  • Central instance can not startup when i install the SAP /DB2 9 env

    Hi,
    could  anybody help me?   I just installed the SAP /db2 V9.1 on HACMP cluster envrioment . By now , the SCS, ASCS, DB instance installation have been  OK, Unfortunately , an
    error occurs when I installed the CI.
    the error message is that "ABAP Database db must be started on remote server "  i check the trans.log , the error message is "DbSlConnect to 'AE1' as 'sapae1' failed"  the detail informatioin ,please check the the following trans.log.  but i can startup and activate the database, i can connect to db with sapae1 and sapae1 user with password.
    first i install the DB2 software and db2 instance with the virtual hostname dbae1. i found the hostname in the db2cfg.log is not virtual hostname but physical name. i don't know what happens.  In order to keep the hostname the same, i installed the CI on sapaix01, the error message is the same as before.  i have upgrade the sap kernel and reinstall the CI again, the error is the same as before too Could you give me some suggestion.
    First  let me describe our cluster enviroment
    For CI, and DI are not a Single point of failure  , so the DI and CI
    are out of cluster.     The cluster enviroment just includes the
    SCSASCS and DB instance. SCSASCS is installed on sapaix02, DB instance is installed on sapaix01

    Hi,
    have you tried to connect on the command line (instead of using R3trans) ?
    db2 connect to AE1 user sapae1 using .....
    If this works and you have verified that the DB2DB6EKEY is set properly, use dscdb6up to update the password in the password file dscbd6.conf.
    Then try again to use R3trans to connect.
    Best regards,

  • SAP DB2 Deep Compression

    Hi All
    I need some help with IBM DB2 version 9.5 to implement deep compression on very large tables compressing all the data in the tables not just from the point of enabling the compression going forward, the problem is these tables are very bit one as large as 2TB, which will take to long to REORG.
    I came across the IBM DB2 Deep Compression best practice guide which describes a method of creating a 10% sample table using the BERNOULLI function in a new table space, then activating the compression flag on this smaller table, running a REORG on the smaller table to generate the compression dictionary, and then to migrate all the data in the original table to the smaller table thus compressing the full content using the compression dictionary created off the 10% sample size and renaming the table names.
    Code example in the guide looks like this:
    CREATE TABLE T2 LIKE T1 IN TABLESPACE_B;
    DECLARE LOAD_CUR1 CURSOR FOR SELECT * FROM T1 TABLESAMPLE BERNOULLI(10);
    LOAD FROM LOAD_CUR1 OF CURSOR INSERT INTO T2;
    REORG TABLE T2 RESETDICTIONARY;
    DECLARE LOAD_CUR2 CURSOR FOR SELECT * FROM T1;
    LOAD FROM LOAD_CUR2 OF CURSOR REPLACE INTO T2;
    I would like to know if this is supported by SAP and if so how to handle the indexes and index table spaces linked to the data tables and data table spaces.
    I used the SAP DB2 Compression Tool in SAP Note 980067 to identify the candidates for compression but the tables identified are the very big ones.
    If you have any creative idea's I will be grateful for the help.
    Thanks and regards,

    Hello Amanda,
    as far as I know, Deep Compression is supported by any SAP System that supports DB2 version 9.1 and higher. This should be supported from SAP kernel level 6.40 (SP18) upwards. But have a look at the SAP notes 900487, 1089568 or 1351160, depending on the DB2 version. Have also a look at [this page|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/weblogs;jsessionid=%28J2EE3417800%29ID0062928350DB00623116135828352293End?blog=/pub/wlg/4330].
    Compression can save lots of storage depending on your workload. It also improves I/O performance because not that much data must be moved over network. The only disadvantage known to me is that some extent of extra-CPU is needed to compress and recompress data.
    Regards,
    Marcel

    Hi Jin-Chong
    many thanks for you help. But the problem still persists.
    1. We don't have $ODBCINI. There are no conection issues at all. Connection is performed by IBM Data Server Client (db2client) db2 connect to ...
    2. For which stored procedures do we need to apply these Grants?  We manually exported the available historical data from the TrendingDB to CSV files, connected to the database server with db2 connect... (on the app server), imported these CSV with the same user, it all went smoothly. We granted some DML's to the database user. also granted DBADM and SECADM to the database user as well, just to be sure there are no permission issues.
    The Error message seems to indicate There is a problem finding the correct driver for monitoring database, since it says,
          networkLayer    "ODBC"
            DBMS    "DB2"
    com.sap.connectivity.cs.core.CSError: Specified RDBMS is invalid : DB2.
    - Maby IBM Data Server Client (db2client) is not supported for monitoring database at all?
    - Do we have to install additional DB2 clients like DB2 CLI driver or ODBC client instead?
    Thanks in advance

  • Dbcon connection from sap db2 to external sql server

    Hi ,

    How to resolve this issue. As it was mentioned in few forum we need to download the dbsl library from kernel patches and to load in kernel path. As my  db is DB2  can  we download dbmssslib.so this library and load in kernel file? Is it will work?
    Regards,
    Rai

    Hi Rai,
    This error indicates that the ABAP stack could not find the SAP DBSL for SQL Server (dbmssslib.dll) in the kernel directory. If you encounter this error on a Unix - based server the root cause is clear: the DBSL does not exist for other platforms than Windows or Linux x84_64. In this case use a Windows-based or a Linux x86_64-based SAP Application Server to establish the connection. If your system does not contain a Windows-based or a Linux x86_64-based Application Server you need to setup a small one as workaround. If you encounter this error on a Windows Application Server or a Linux x86_64 based Application Server make sure that the DBSL is properly installed in the kernel directory as explained in the document below.

    Hope this helps.

  • SAP DB2 performance issues

    Hello everyone,
    I'm new in db2 for LUW and I have the following questions:
    How can I check the total memory DB2 is using? I have STMM configured. I have two parameters DATABASE_MEMORY (automatic) and INSTANCE_MEMORY? Do I need to sum them?
    I have many secuencial reads in SM50, any advices about how to proceed? (for standard/non standard reports/tables). In ST03N I have High Database time (almost 60% of the response time) any advices about how to proceed?
    Any useful link will be appreciated.

    Hi Hope the below Url and stuff might help you. http://scn.sap.com/thread/3154248 Within TSM there is an "Options" file that has default parameters such as , SERVER NAME,  COM/METHOD, which is TCPIP, TCPPORT, TCPSERVERADDRESS, NODENAME, PASSWORDACCESS , etc. When TSM runs, the first thing it does is read the options file, otherwise the reault is the dump you received. Your best bet is find the directory for TSM, the options file is in there, then add your system information accordingly. You can find sample options files out there to give you some guidance. Cheers, Sharma

    SAP BASIS

    Hello Anwer,
    The official benchmark of SAP is available at
    http://www.sap.com/solutions/benchmark/index.epx
    Various platforms are listed for different SAP products and releases. For example, DB2 UDB for i5/OS helds the top position for 2-tier BW 3.5.
    If properly sized and tuned, all RDBMS options supported would run SAP with good performance. And other aspects, like reliability, scalibility, low maintenance cost, etc should also be considered.
    I would choose a RDBMS with good in-house knowledge. Otherwise, the learning curve could make the implementation tough.
    Best regards,
    Victor

  • Tools for migrating data from SAP DB2 to Oracle

    HI, someone please help regarding the topic mentioned above. Is there any tools that I can use to migrate the DB2 to Oracle

    This is a very specialized area you are looking at. My recommendation is that you look at SAP sites on Oracle.com for assistance. There is also a SAP Migration white paper you can read and the Oracle/SAP site.
