Virtualizing Lync?

Are there any best practice guides available for virtualizing Microsoft Lync?  I've got the Microsoft Whitepaper but that's written from a Hyper-V standpoint and a lot of there recommendations do not work in the VMware world.
Jason

Its all depend upon the storage and the pnics you have.
if you have 10gig ethernet, and vsphere ent+ license dedicate atleast 2 gig for the lync server networking by using NIOC.
if you have HP blades and flex nics, just give 2 gig bandwidth.
Use vmxnet3 for the vnics in the VM
Now storage..
Separate database and lync server,
For DB use pvscsi adapter, use sparate virtual scsi nodes for OS, DB data, DB logs,
For Mssql Database use RAID5 or RAID50
For Database logs use RAID10
Format the Database VM drives, with ntfs cluster size 64KB.
For DB give atleast 2 vCPU and give more RAM,
Put DB and Lync server VM in separate LUN.
These are all general very basic.. we use... I belive this will be enough. If you have specific capcity planning and load then share..we can discuss.

  • Lync virtual deployment

    Dear expert,
We need your help on Lync deployment. I've already design NEW virtual environment for Microsoft Lync 2013.
Problem is our customer change the plan. They wanted to deploy the Lync 2013 on their
EXISTING virtual Environment which is Hyper-V.
    Question : -
Can we deploy virtual Lync server 2013 on their existing virtual environment which already have other Virtual Machine?.
    Thanks.

Yes. Providing that the host hardware has sufficient performance/specification to run Lync 2013 along with it's current workloads, this is totally fine (and is how nearly all deployments I have done are run.)
Use the Lync Capacity Planning Tool http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36828 to determine your requirements. I usually allow 7-10% extra for VM overhead.

  • Lync Server 2013 in a Remote Desktop Environment

    Hello Community,
We have a client who is sold on Lync. He wants to install Lync server in a Terminal Server but his environment is RDHS 2008v2 and his end users have thin clients. According to MS official position It is not supported. Has anyone successfully implemented
this ? If yes what are the pitfalls that lay ahead with regards to audio/video redirection, desktop sharing etc. He has traditional phones but really he wants to get rid of them and go Lync full blown.

    The Virtualizing Lync Server 2013
(WindowsITPro) article presents a nice overview to this topic.
In additon, do take a look at the following resources which may be helpful:

Note that unlike Lync Server 2010, the Lync 2013 VDI browser plug-in is designed to support VDI environments (with paired audio/video) running on supported platforms (from Windows Server 2008 R2 to 2012/R2).
    Hope this helps.

  • Integration Lync 2013 Online (Cloud) with Cisco CUCM 9.1

    HI
First i Don't have a physical or virtual Lync server in my network,
Do i have any chance to migrate with my Cisco CUCM 9.1
    Thanks.
    Ahmed Elshalh

Lync online won't support back-end integration with CUCM on prem. But if looking to try client side integration, Cisco's CUCI supports Lync online.
    CUCI: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/unified-communications/uc-integration-tm-microsoft-lync/index.html
    O365 support: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucimoc/8_6/cucimocReleaseNote8_6.html#wp363808
Keep in mind CUCI is a Cisco supported solution and not a Microsoft one, also CUCI disables most of the Lync client functionality.

  • SCOM Lync alerts

    Hi,
We had 2 virtual Lync 2013 Front servers mediation server collocated and last week  we moved them to physical boxes.
Now we are getting following SCOM alerts can some please let me know whether these are critical or can be ignored.
    1.
Alert: [LYNC] The DATAMCU was not able to stay connected to the Front End over the C3P channel (HTTPS Connection).
    Source: LS Data Conferencing Component
    2.
Alert: [LYNC] A server did not respond to HTTP request
    Source: LS Certificate Provisioning Component
    3.
Alert: [LYNC] Total number of Storage Service EWS Autodiscovery errors.
    Source: LS Storage Service Component

    Hi,
Please check that the Front End server is running correctly and that network connectivity and an HTTPS Connection can be established between the MCU and the Front End server.
Please check if all Lync services started on FE servers and can be connected on the target port telnet.
Please also check if EWS worked normally between Lync server and Exchange.
If all of these above work normally you can ignore the alerts temporarily.

  • Hyper-V to Physical Server

    Hi,
I have a virtualized Lync 2013 server on hyper-v. Now I need this VM to be installed on a physical server. Is it a good idea to install Lync 2013 on the physical server as well and move existing data and users to the physical server? What is the best
and easiest way to achieve this?
    Regards,
    Thisaru Perera.

No you cannot install form VDH to Disk.
You have to depoly the Standard Edition pool on the physical server within your topology and the migrate the users to the new pool and
    Decommission the virtual server.
    To move the CMS:
Backup the databases just in case:
    Export-CsConfiguration –FileName C:\Configuration.zip
    Export-CsLisConfiguration –FileName C:\LIS.zip
Install the database on the new server:
Install-CSDatabase –CentralManagementDatabase –UseDefaultSQLPaths –SqlServerFQDN newserver.domain.com -SqlInstanceName rtc
    Enable the Topology:
    Enable-CsTopology
    Move the server
    Move-CsManagementServer

  • Physical cpu to virtual cpu ratio for LYNC 2013 FE

    what
should be the physical cpu to virtual cpu ratio for LYNC 2013 FE and Edge server, it is same like exchange 1:1 ?

    Putting this here as well:
I don't believe this is documented anywhere.   I typically see 6 cores, but I've run with 4 or 8 but in the end it's all about watching performance.
System Center Advisory for Lync can complain if it's not at least 8.

  • Lync 2013 desktop sharing is giving Black screen when using virtual machine

    Hello,
We have a user who is connecting our network through VPN and connecting to a virtual machine. He is able to login to lync but when he start desktop sharing or some one sharing the desktop to him, he is getting black screen. He is using windows 7 and Lync
    2013 client. Please advice

    Hi,
Did he receive any error message?
Please double check the ports for VPN traffic.
Please also enable logging on Lync client for further troubleshooting.
What’s more, when users connect to the corporate network using a VPN client, Lync media traffic is sent through the VPN tunnel. This configuration can create additional latency and jitter because media traffic must pass through an additional layer of encryption
and decryption. The issue is compounded when the VPN concentrator is busy.
    You can configuration like this:
Lync client connect to the Access Edge Server for all signaling connections when on the corporate VPN. However, Media sessions routed through the A/V Edge Server interface instead of establishing connectivity through the VPN tunnel.

  • Lync Reverse Proxy Alternatives

When migrating from OCS 2007 to Lync 2010, we balked Microsoft’s recommendation to deploy Forefront Threat Management Gateway (or ISA) just to get the reverse proxy services.
TMG is way too expensive and complex for such a limited, simple use case.
I didn't find much information on what people are using as free alternatives to ISA/TMG, so I decided to post this discussion in case there are others out there who are interested.
We decided to use Apache 2.2 on Windows Server 2008 R2.
    Here's how we configured it:
Read here to understand what features require a reverse proxy, and follow the steps to configure your FQDNs, Network Adapters and (maybe) obtain an SSL Certificate for the reverse proxy.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg398069.aspx
Download and install the latest stable release of Apache with OpenSSL on your reverse proxy server.
    http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi
We're using the same certificate on the reverse proxy that we use on our front end server (it has the appropriate SANs), so we need to convert it to PEM format for use with Apache:
Use the Certificates MMC on your front end server to export the certificate and include the private key.
Transfer the resultant .pfx file to your reverse proxy server.
Use OpenSSL to convert your .pfx file to PEM:
    openssl pkcs12 -in c:\pathto\yourcert.pfx -out c:\pathto\yourcert.pem –nodes
Separate the private key from the certificate using notepad:
Open the new .pem file and cut the text from the beginning of the file through the end of the “----END RSA PRIVATE KEY----“ tag.
Save that text to a new file named
    yourcert.key.
    Save
yourcert.pem, which should now only include the certificate.
Copy (or move) the certificate and private key to the Apache configuration directory. We like to use: C:\Program Files (x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\conf\extra\ssl
    for storing the certificates.
    Edit httpd.conf (typically in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\conf) to enable and configure the proxy and SSL features:
    (See  http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_proxy.html
for more information on each directive)
Uncomment the following lines, which will enable proxy and SSL:
    LoadModule proxy_module modules/mod_proxy.so
    LoadModule proxy_http_module modules/mod_proxy_http.so
    LoadModule ssl_module modules/mod_ssl.so
    Include conf/extra/httpd-ssl.conf
Add the following lines to configure reverse proxy behavior:
#Be a reverse proxy, not a forward proxy
    ProxyRequests Off
#Accept requests from any client to any URL
    <Proxy *>
    Order Deny,Allow
    Allow from all
    </Proxy>
#Set the network buffer to improve throughput
    ProxyReceiveBufferSize 4096
#Configure the Reverse Proxy to forward all requests to your front end server on 4443
    ProxyPass / https://yourfrontend.domain.com:4443/
    ProxyPassReverse / https://yourfrontend.domain.com:4443/
    #Preserve Host Headers for Lync
    ProxyPreserveHost On
Optionally, configure logging directives, bindings and server name.
    Save and close httpd.conf
    Edit httpd-ssl.conf (typically in conf\extra):
    Configure the session cache:
    Uncomment:
    SSLSessionCache “dbm:C:/Program Files (x86)/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/logs/ssl_scache”
    Comment out:
    SSLSessionCache “shmcb:C:/Program Files (x86)/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/logs/ssl_scache(512000)”
Locate the <VirtualHost _default_:443> tag and configure the following:
    Add the following directive:
    SSLProxyEngine On
Configure the path to your SSL Certificate saved in step 3-5 above:
    SSLCertificateFile “C:\Program Files (x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\conf\extra\ssl\yourcert.pem”
Configure the path to your private key saved in step 3-5 above:
    SSLCertificateKeyFile “C:\Program Files (x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\conf\extra\ssl\yourcert.key”
Optionally, configure the SSLCACertificateFile (you can download the appropriate bundle from your CA).
    Optionally, configure logging directives.
    Save and close httpd-ssl.conf
    Restart the Apache2.2 service
Configure public DNS records and appropriate firewall rules to allow public http/https traffic to the external interface of your reverse proxy, and to allow the internal interface of
the reverse proxy to talk to the front end Lync server on 8080 and 4443.
From an external connection, test connectivity through the reverse proxy:
    Test
https://dialin.company.com (friendly URL for getting dial-in information, if you’re using voice conferencing)
Test the Lync Web App by setting up an online meeting and following the URL to join the meeting.
You can force the use of the web app by appending ?sl= to the end of the meet.company.com link.
See this for more information http://blogs.technet.com/b/jenstr/archive/2010/11/30/launching-lync-web-app.aspx

I'd like to thank you for this article.  We were setting up Apache RP for Lync .... needless to say they weren't too excited to learn this new (and highly complex with lots of specific undocumented requirements) Microsoft product.  Anyways, your
blog saved me a LOT of headache.  I owe you big time.
    AWESOME JOB.

    *****EDIT***
Decided to come back in there and post good information.  We had issues with EXTERNAL and ANONYMOUS users being able to attend a meeting.  The "DIALUP" url was working fine but the "MEETING" url was broken.  On our WFE servers we were getting
the event error as below.   Turns out that our reverse proxy was not set to "PROXYPRESERVEHOST ON".  Once we put that in there ALL was good.
Notice that the MEET portion was the only thing that was really broken.  So, if you can get DIALUP to work, but MEET doesn't ... your RP is working to FW the 443 to the 4443 correctly but you're RP is sending the wrong HEADER.  Look for
http://10.x.x.x/meet/ or soemthing in the event logs.

  • Backing Up and Restoring Lync Server 2013/OCS 2007 R2 Co-existence Environment

    Hello
I am seeking tips on how to build a replica of a Lync 2013/OCS 2007 R2 production pilot Co-existence environment in a test lab.
Lync 2013 is a standard Edition Pool
OCS 2007 R2 is an Enterprise Pool
Here is what I think...Is this feasible ? appreciate any other idea
    1. Get Active Directory to Test Environment
    For OCS 2007 R2 Servers
    2. Use LCScmd on OCS 2007 R2 Servers to backup Global\Pool\Computer specific settings
    3. Backup OCS 2007 R2 on Backend SQL Database
    4. Restore data from steps 2 and 3 to equivalent servers created and prepared in test environment
    For Lync 2013 SE Servers
    5. Use the Lync 2013 Backup and Restore Process to bring up Lync Server 2013 into the test environment
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh202192.aspx
    David

That should do it, as you said you'll need Active Directory as well so these accounts line up with something.
It may be easiest to restore into your virtual environment using virtual snapshots or Windows backups and fixing any corruption that may have occurred by restoring what you've backed up.

  • Lync 2013 mobile app does not work internally, SIP domain is Different than users UPN. not sure if that matters.

using the lync client connectivity tester on a pc on the same lan as my mobile client everything is green and it says its ready for use.
using my android galaxy s5 client on wifi on the same lan i get a screen with waiting to sign in spinning and an error at the top "we cant connect to the server check your network connection and server address, and try again."

in the analyzer tool i did have to fill in the username field because my sip domain is different then my users UPN. which from what ive read its required to use the username field.
i also filled in the username field in the mobile app with domain\username

again you can see the full log file is `HERE
thank you in advance for any help. im trying to get internal working before i try external.

    Eric,
I am trying to configure a reverseproxy on my netscaler which is in a 2 arm mode(dmz/internal) but I keep getting an error when configuring the monitor.
i used this guide to configure it
    http://www.lynced.com.au/2014/04/configure-citrix-netscaler-vpx-as.html
but continue to get this error in the netscaler monitor "Failure - TCP connection successful, but application timed out"
so the virtual server is never up, thinking about just changing it to tcp as a monitor so it stays up and i can at lesat get the vip up.
Also your link to the diagram shows it going to the reverse  proxy but the one im using has it going directly to the front end servers.
    http://www.lync-solutions.com/Documents/Lync_2013_protocol_poster_v6_7.pdf
I'm guessing Microsoft's is the correct one but wonder why the config differential?
I see that your diagram says "mobility url", what is the mobility url? i though that was the lyncdiscoverinternal.internal.com
    current setup is
    2 fe servers on internal
    1 edge server on dmz

  • No Conversation History neither in Outlook Conversation History nor in Lync Conversation Tab

    Good day, people!
I use Lync Server 2013 and MSOffice Lync 2013 and also Exchange 2010.
All users in our company felt fine about their conversation history in lync.
A couple weeks ago it started: i created new AD Users - and their conversation history did not save. Neither in Outlook Conversation History nor in Conversations Tab in Lync. All checkboxes in Lync Personal Options marked as needed.
And I remarked that new users had no Meetings Tab in Lync and also their Register had less folders than mine. I think the reason is not in rights of access, because they are the same domain admins as me.
    Any suggestions, friends?
By the way! I have got a warning on that computers, which are not saving conversation history:
The description for Event ID 11 from source Lync cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:

I thoght about that. And i figured it out.
I compared two users. And differences were in these Attributes (Attribute Editor Tab):
    msExchMailboxTemplateLink
    msExchELCMailboxFlags
    msExchMobileMailboxPolicyLink
But! Very soon i understood, that the problem is not in these Attributes, because both of these users could see Conversation History on another computer (it was specially created virtual machine).
Both of users are in the same OU.
Also, both of computers are in the same OU. Both of the computers have a clear install of Windows 8.1.
The diffrence only in installed software.
Now i'm checking the vary with Software. I'm installing the software to find out which of them perhaps prevent saving Conversation History. And i'll try ADSIEdit. Thanks for the cue, Baasky!

  • Lync 2010 Voice & Video Support on Windows 2012 R2 SP1 RDSH & RDVH

Hello - We have successfully demonstrated RDSH & RDVH using Windows 2012 R2, Windows 8 virtual desktops and Dell T10 Zero clients. RemoteFX has been successfully tested as well for Printing across RDSH & RDVH environments.
Problem at hand is that we are unable to showcase Lync 2010 Voice & Video calling across both these environments (RDSH & RDVH).
    RDSH Environment
In an RDSH environment, we observe that a Platronics headset connected to the Dell T10 thin client is able to get redirected to the RDSH Server using RemoteFX and in-turn the RDSH Server is able to detect the connected hardware. However, the Lync 2010 client,
published using RDSH, is UNABLE to detect the connected audio device.
As for Logitech Webcam connected to the Dell T10 thin client, we have no issues with device detection and the Lync 2010 client is able to see the connected Webcam device.
    RDVH Environment (Pooled Desktop)
As for the RDVH environment, we observe that both the Platronics headset & Logitec Webcam connected to the the Dell T10 thin client are UNABLE to get redirected to the RDVH Server using RemoteFX. We have enabled RemoteFX via Group policy in this environment.
    Queries:
    A. Could you help providing some direction into troubleshooting/isolating the audio-device detection issue on Lync clients in an RDSH environment.
    B. Could you help providing some direction into troubleshooting/isolating the audio & webcam re-direction issue in an RDVH environment. FYI, our test bed server does NOT support GPU and wanted to check if that would be a limitation towards detection
    of these devices?
    Thanks

    Hi Dharmesh,
    Thank you for a response.
We had already enabled Audio and Video playback option.
But when we have tested with windows 7 desktop machine, the audio devices are detecting in Lync client in both RDVH and RDSH
environment and we are able to make audio calls. So we are planning to test with the different thin clients. Post we will update the same.
    Thanks.

  • Problems with Lync integration in App-V Package for Office 365 ProPlus

We have problems with setting Lync 2013 to automatic start after Windows start with Office 365 ProPlus App-V Package made by Office Deployment Tool. We use latest version for both (ODT and download package) at Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit.
We have done this for Lync 2010 and also for Lync 2013 (MSI installations) and it works correctly.
User can choose to start Lync automatically, but this settings is ignored and in virtual registry is set wrong. We look for possible ways to set this by GPO (in ADMX is not this option available) by inserting in virtual registry with Package ID and user
    SID in registry path.

Usually setting apps to auto start sets a registry key under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, but since this registry key is inside the virtual environment, Windows does not read it at logon.
The workaround is to either set this key in the native registry (perhaps by an App-V script), or easier still, just copy the shortcut to the Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder. Since you can't really modify Office 2013 packages with the sequencer, you'd
have to add this shortcut by modifying the deployment config file.

  • MAPI over HTTP not working correctly, Outlook 2013 clients prompting for credentials during profile creation or opening depending on security of virtual directory

    ENVIRONMENT
-1 Exchange 2013 SP1 CU7 server with all roles that is also a hybrid server with Office 365 tenant, mailboxes are all on premise only LYNC online is being utilized right now.
    -Exchange 2013 public folders
-Mix of Outlook 2013 SP1 and Outlook 2010 SP3 clients all fully update to day as of Feb 2015
Outlook anywhere is working perfectly across all clients both internally and externally using autodiscover.  Both Outlook 2013 and 2010 clients can open the program and create a profile automatically via autodiscover and no additional logon prompts
    are seen.
We set the internal and external mapi virtual directory URLs to a valid URL that also matches the Exchange 2013 SSL certificate.  We set the security to ntlm, negotiate on the mapi virtual directory.  We reset IIS and enabled mapi over http in
the org config.  We run in to problems here.
Outlook 2010 clients appear to be working fine.  We can create a new profile and open and close Outlook without any logon prompts and verify that MAPIHTTP and Negotiate are used to connect to Exchange.
Outlook 2013 clients are having problems.  As soon as we try to create a profile it says your administrator has made a change that requires you to restart outlook and then a windows logon prompt appears. If we authenticate Outlook will open and connect.
This logon prompt should not occur.    We can confirm that it is connecting via MAPI HTTP and Negotiate.
If we set the mapi virtual directory to NTLM only then a logon prompt also appears during every open of Outlook 2013.  We can confirm that it is trying to connect with MAPIHTTP via NTLM in the outlook connection test screen.
I do not understand this behavior by Outlook 2013 which was supposed to be designed with MAPI HTTP in mind.  I would think the same issues would occur with Outlook 2010 but they do not.  I am not sure how to resolve this and I am looking for help.

I have the same problem. Exchange and Outlook are both up to date. After creating a new profile Outlook prompts for username/password. A lot of users also get this prompt while
working - the profiles have been "migrated" from Exchange server 2010. <o:p></o:p>
Niko, as i can see in your screenshot you do not have Mapi over HTTP enabled. Why? You can change settings in the security tab – if you have Mapi over
HTTP enabled all options are grayed out (please correct me if I
    am wrong):
This is a very annoying thing – does anybody else have the same problem?
    Any suggestions on this?
    Marc
