Virtulization of Oracle DBA jobs

Is'n it good idea to have more DBA jobs work from home, for the interest of both the DBA and the company? I Say so many companies in USA is already going towards that....

Hello
Nice article
but do you forget the Oracle Metalink?
the suggestion company DBAs must be certified ( i think),
those DBAs must have metalink also
you have to see all the hardware and OS
the trust
the advertisement
marketing
licences
which customer you will support?
many question
thank you at all

  • Oracle DBA Jobs

    Hello All,
Please don't mind my question if I have violated the purpose of the forum and if so then I am really sorry.
I have been working in Oracle Database Administration since almost 3.4 years. I have mostly worked on Dev-Test Platforms where we maintain zero downtime. I do not have any hands on RAC or much knowledge . I have worked on 10g,11g.
I know the concepts and methods of implementing Data guard (standby), I have worked on RMAN(duplication, incremental backup,complete/incomplete recovery and etc),expdp/impdp and exp/imp, little amount of scripting (SQL/Shell), basic Server management(mostly have exp on Linux), Installation of RDBMS/ASM, Creation of Databases(manually/DBCA), Security(privs, roles, auditing), Tablespace and other logical structure management, HOT backup,Cold backup(and restoration from it), Database upgradation, patching(PSU, one-off,inventory attach/detach), Tracing, SQL Loader, standby monitoring and creation, Database Monitoring and maintenance, segment management and defragmentation, Database object maintenance, Configuration of OEM etc, handling different types of Oracle errors including critical errors like 600,7445 etc... Reading and extracting AWR/ASH..
Can I get a job outside of my present company? As I am not seeing much growth there.. Not even getting to have exposure to other platforms.. Most of the companies want RAC personal.
Please suggest and help me (if possible).. I am really in tension about what will be there in my future as here I will never get to work in RAC and high availibility architecture ..
That is the reason now I am thinking to switch my company for better technological growth..
What areas should I know in this phase of my career. pls suggest.. I am from INDIA
    -Regards
    Struggling DBA

Whether you will get another job is an entirely local matter. Ask a local recruiter how the job market is for DBAs. In my local area (in the US), it seems like there is a decent amount of demand for DBAs, but you might be working in a local economy that is stagnant.
Chances are, in 2013, that any new DBA job will involve some element of database redundancy.
Within a few years, I suspect that most places will have either RAC or Exadata systems for their critical databases. It'll probably take a significant outage before most companies will spend the cash for clustered systems, but they will eventually move that way. Even Oracle's Database Machine is a RAC configuration if you think about it - and that's what they're trying to pitch to the smaller customers.
I remember that about 10 years ago, RAC was rare (I remember installing RAC 9.2.0.1 for a client - boy, that was DIFFICULT). 'All' that you had to do to be a DBA then, was understand single-instance stuff.
Five years later, most DBAs needed to know RAC/ASM/Data Gurd if they wanted to be Production DBAs - they then had to understand single-instance, cluster, ASM and Data Guard stuff.
I can see that within a couple of years, DBAs will have to be competent in Exadata or similar - so they'll need to understand single-instance, cluster, ASM, Data Guard AND Exadata stuff (networking, storage cells, etc).
My point is that the DBA role changes as fast as any tech specialty. Thankfully, Oracle's is making things easier to administer as the technologies we have to master become more complex: I can vouch for how difficult 9.2.0.1 was to set up for RAC - managing an 11.2 system is SO much nicer!
Unless you're working in a place that have no plans to upgrade their databases (due to legacy systems) or to grow as a business, then the chances are you will eventually be exposed to what you're looking for. Of course, if you're working in such a place, then it might be suggested that you're better off finding somewhere else to work. To stand still is to roll backwards, etc....
Good luck. It's good to be ambitious, but don't forget that a DBA role is one that absolutely demands experience - if you've 3 years of being a Production DBA and having to get THAT call in the middle of the night, you've probably got better experience than someone who has spent 6 years as a Development DBA (IMO).

  • Need Oracle DBA  Job

    Hi All,
This Karnan, i have finished BCA(Computer Application) 2008, and i did oracle9i DBA OCP,
I was not able to get into Oracle DBA as a fresher.
Finally Nov-2009, i got job in POLARIS SOFTWARE LAB ltd., as Software Tester.
I'm very much passion about in Oracle, i want to be a DBA only,
Please any one guide me how to get entered in ORACLE DBA as a fresher,
or let me know if you know about companys whho's hiring freshers for oracle.
    Thanks,
    Karnan Thambidurai

Well, I am not sure that how does this question fits in the database general forum in any ways. If it should be posted( please note the "if") , the most suitable place would the Community discussion forum.
I am not from HR background so please take my advice with grain of salt. When you would be working as a contractor, there would be two ways for this thing. One , you own your company so all the payments , invoices would be on your own company's name. If that's so, no issues. You can always show those invoices. The other way , using which the contract work is done is that you are hired by company X but you end up working for company Y. So company Y doesn't give you anything but your company X is supposed to give you whatever paper work is needed. So see if this is your case.
Whatever the thing may be, the HR of the next company won't stick to the pay slip only provided you can prove that you worked and the money you got for that work was a legal, taxable amount. As long as you can prove that by whatevre kind of document, you are good. That said, you haven't yet started and you are thinking about leaving too! At least do the job first for some time before you care about what the next company's Hr would say since you can always ask them all of these doubts.
Again, please note that Iam not from HR , never was or will be so all what I said is purely based on what I know how things work but any of my words are not at all authoritative.

  • DBA jobs...Advise plz

    Hi All ,
I am struggling to find Jr Oracle DBA jobs in the current market . I have done my Masters here in US but I haven't been successful in finding a Jr Oracle DBA job here . I have around 1 yr of experience as a DBA . Can you please guide me into finding a suitable DBA job .
    Advise is honestly appreciated.
    Thanks!!!!!!!!

I agree with Helio Dias' suggestion to seek out helping some non-profit organizations, but of course, that won't pay back your student loan or pay your rent.
You may consider applying yourself to the various staffing agencies (job shops). They have a myriad of job opportunities, and many of them specifically looking for Jr. DBAs. I know at our company, I personally had a posting for a Jr. DBA which we eventually filled through a staffing agency.
I don't see where you are from, but in our area, some of the more commonly known agencies are: TechUSA, TEAM, TAC, AeroTek, Maxim Group, NRI (Network Resources Inc.), SAIC, and countless others. Do a google search on staffing agencies <your town>.
Many of the jobs are temporary, but many of them are temp-to-perm. And don't discount the temporary jobs because you will learn a lot and gain a lot of diversified experience from them.
    Good luck.

Well , you won't go for shopping when there are already guests in your home , will you? In case, that didn't make much sense, I meant that you won't start reading books, pdfs, looking at websites when you are going to have an interview already scheduled for you. I can bet my money( whatever little I have) that even doing this, won't bring you any good. If your question directly or indirectly is related to the questions that the interviewer may ask, once again, this would be a total wrong approach to go for an interview. In almost no time, it can be find out whether you are speaking some crammed line or from yourself. I had a chance to sit on the other side of the hot seat and the guy in front of me was giving all teh bookish answers. I twisted the questions and I was sure that he must have not read them anywhere, guess what happened. he started fumbling and finally gave up.
Interview is what you know, what you have done so far. Its not to start picking up LOTS of books, looking for the questions/answers and just think that the interview will happen from that only. I have some questions whose answers, at least the complete answers , you won't find anywhere. My suggestion is to just go for the interview, be honest about what you know and more about , what you don't know. You haven't committed a crime by not knowing some thing. I know nothing and I am never scared from the interviews ;-) .
Not sure that did help or not but still, best of luck.

  • Entry point in Oracle DBA

My name is James, and I am a resident of seattle WA. I am a software and hardware tester profesional both in manual and automation using windows and linux (but mostly software testing on windows platform) for the past 6 plus year. However, I am looking forward to go into oracle DBA. I have intermediate experince with MS SQL 2005/2008 and oracle 9g/10g. What is the best resources out there or book(s) that I can use to enhance my oracle DBA skill and is there a way to get an entry oracle DBA position out there to kick off as an oracle DBA? Any advice would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -James.

Its getting near impossible to get into the Oracle DBA field, unless perhaps you are a developer at a company that just happens to need a DBA and you are in the right place at the right time.
Most companies have downsized their DBA staffs, and most companies now expect their DBAs to take on much more databases as well as other responsibilities, including web server administration, develop SQL and PL/SQL and reports, and just about anything else your supervisor happens to need without having the funding to hire someone.
Just as you noted, to be a DBA today requires at least 3-5 years experience, along with a couple years of RAC, Data Guard, Streams, TT, and whatever else is new, and perhaps a Top Secret Clearance that has been active within the past 6 months.
Its near impossible. Even then, if you happen to have all of the above, there will likely be 20 or 30 (or more) qualified applicants for every job opening. But most companies are not hiring to fill permanent positions. They would rather hire you as a temp worker that they don't have to worry about laying you off, or paying your benefits. And of course, if you work for a temp agency, they don't have benefits. And most companies don't want to hire someone who has been working for temp agencies very long because they think you will just leave for the next opportunity to make more money.
And if you do happened to get hired by a company in a permanent position, they will likely put you on as a salaried employee that they can exploit and work you 55 hours a week without compensation or time off for hours over 40 hours.
So catch-22 is exactly right. For a newbie, I think it would be easier to get a IT related job within a company and then perhaps transfer positions later when or if one ever opens up.
It sounds like a bleak picture, and actually it really is, especially for a newbie coming into this field. I'd recommend considering web page development for eCommerce type software. That seems to be where the money is, (if you don't mind doing that kind of work).
    Just my two cents...

First - STOP BEING SO LAZY AND START HELPING YOUR TEAMMATES!
Second - you can't possibly be 'working as dba' if you say you have 'lot a idle time'. You might have been hired as a DBA but you clearly aren't 'working'.
Third - you also can't possibliby have 'such a hugh responsibility' if you have lots of idle time.
I have worked with many 'senior' DBAs over the years and several of those times were at a large international bank. There were NEVER periods when anyone had lots of idle time. There was always more work than we could handle and it had to be prioritized and scheduled.
And, since I've never known anyone that would hire someone that they don't really need, especially a bank.
Sounds to me like you are just lazy and need a serious attitude adjustment.
You learn by DOING not by reading. Those senior DBAs will have PLENTY of things you can do to get a solid base of skills. I'm sure they would just LOVE to have you tell them yhou have lots of 'idle time' and they will have no problem at all answering the question you posted here.
Jump in with both feet and start contributing to your team. Help out your fellow DBAs. They will reciprocate by sharing their knowledge with you. After all you have to become BETTER THAN THEM before you can become the 'top' of the market.
If what you posted is true then you have EVERYTHING you need RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU:
    1. Opportunity - Banks use almost every DBA skill that there is: backup/recovery, architecture, tuning, and so on
    2. Hardware Resources - Banks have plenty of equipment to work with and many different environments (PROD, QA, TEST, DEV) that need supported.
    3. People Resources - You have several senior DBAs ready and willing to give you work to do and to help you learn new skills that will take more of the load off of them. Doesn't sound like you have been cultivating those 'people' relationships at all.
    4. Time - you said you have lots of 'idle time'. For one, I don't believe you. But if it is true then why aren't you using that idle time to take advantage of items #1, #2 and #3 that I just listed.
I know people that would LOVE to have the opportunity that you say you have and they sure wouldn't wasted their time here in the forums asking questions that they own teammates could help them with.
You won't be at the top of ANYTHING if you don't change your attitude and get to work! What a pity.
