Virus Barrier on Parallels Desktop 3.0

Can someone please tell me if I install Virus Barrier X5 Generation on my iMac, will Windows running on Parallels Desktop 3.0 be protected from viruses and other nasty Microsoft related ailments?

  • VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop Benchmark Comparison

This is a quickie benchmark of VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop using Super PI, PC Mark 05, and Passmark.
    VMWare Fusion 36932
    Parallels Desktop 3094 Beta 2
    Notes:
Both virtual machines were allocated with large 10+ GB virtual disks and 640MB of RAM. The VMWare CPU was configured with two processors. The Parallels CPU was configured with 1 (two is not available). VMWare reported the CPU as 1 physical, 2 logical processors running at 2.66 GHz while Parallels reported 1 physical, 1 logical processor running at 9.6 GHz (the combined speed of all four cores on the Mac Pro). The max observed CPU utilization in activity monitor when running under VMWare was 200% and max under Parallels was 173%.
I chose not to compare 1 VMWare CPU vs. 1 Parallels CPU. While Parallels does not support SMP or multithreaded processes on multiple processors the CPU utilization on the Mac went well above 1 core (173%). For this comparison, I wanted to see results of max processing based on what the two vendors have delivered, as opposed to benchmarking the underlying "virtual or hypervisor cpu" on a 1:1 basis. This explains why VMWare was 2x faster than Parallels on some CPU tests.
Both of these products are beta. VMWare is running in debug mode (can not be turned off in this beta).
Caveat emptor on these stats. This was an unscientific exercise to satisfy my curiosity. Some of the extraordinary differences are highlighted with <--.
    Platform:
Mac Pro 2.66 GHz, 2GB RAM, Nvidia 7300GT
    Disk 1 - OS X, 73GB Raptor
Disk 2 - dedicated disk where each virtual machine image was created separate from the OS or any OS-related virtual memory files.

Thanks for posting these numbers - it's an interesting comparison.
I would expect the final VMWare fusion performance numbers to be quite a bit better than that of Parallels - they have almost a decade's worth of experience more than the Parallels folks in this arena, and a much larger development team to boot.
Once VMWare Fusion is released to the public, I think that you'll see a clearer distinction between the two products. VMWare will continue to appeal to the professional customer, with a more robust feature set and corporate-friendly features (and a correspondingly higher price tag); Parallels will fall more into the consumer/VirtualPC-replacement market. It will be interesting to see how Parallels will be affected when (and if) VMWare player is ported to OS X.
Interesting about the Parallels performance stats on a native partition - looks like almost enough reason to avoid the bootcamp partition approach altogether. Sharing a native windows installation with a VM in parallels is a pretty scary situation in any case, as the two environments have entirely different hardware configurations. Do-able, but there is some black magic involved (if you want to see an example of what I mean, try to move a windows installation from one machine to another w/different hardware sometime - it ain't pretty); I wouldn't try this in a production scheme unless I had REALLY good backups.

  • Mountain Lion and Parallel desktop 8

I have parallel desktop 8 installed windows xp in it. Lt me know if it can attract any virus or malware which in turn affect the mac performance as well.

No. Windows malware will not affect OS X, but it will impact on your Windows system. It would be wise to protect your Windows system.

  • Security with Parallels Desktop

If I install Windows using either Boot Camp or Parallels Desktop, can I rely on the Mac for security to the same extent as I could if I were running only OS X? Or should I install some sore of virus protection for the Windows OS?
    Thanks

As a matter of fact, you can. If you are using Parallels with its default networking configuration, then your Mac is acting as a router for the PC. That alone will protect you from the most dangerous attacks. On the Mac or the PC, you will now only be vulnerable to "user-initiated" security problems. That means that if you use Internet Explorer on the PC, you can still get viruses and spyware. Use Firefox or, even better, Safari3 on the PC instead. If you are using Outlook on the PC, you are still vulnerable to viruses in e-mails. Use the Mac side to check your mail, if possible. And, of course, if you download and run any software from the Internet that you don't absolutely trust, you are taking a big risk. This applies to both platforms.
I've never used anti-virus on any Mac or any PC I've ever had. No problems other than a little bit of spyware on the PC from when I accidentally used IE. Use IE only for Windows Update. If you use IE, you will get at least one spyware installed for each web site you visit, on average.

  • Virus Barrier X6 causing problems with Lion 10.7.1

After posting in these forums that third party installation software launches spontaneously with Lion 10.7.1, I'd like to share my experience with Virus Barrier X6 ver. 10.6.14.
I found the latest update from Intego Virus Barrier (dated Sept. 29, 2011) has problems with OS Lion 10.7.1. When it scans installation files, (e.g. .dmg files from Apple or third parties), it unpacks them but then has problems closing and ejecting opened .dmg files. Specifically, only after updating Virus Barrier X6 definitions to the Sep. 29th 2011 definitions, installation files opened onto my desktop whenever Virus Barrier scans for viruses.
Whether this is related to other problems reported with Finder in Mac OS Lion 10.7, or if this is a problem for Apple or Intego or both to solve, I don't know. I hope someone fixes it though.
    Mac OS 10.7.1
    Intego Virus Barrier X6, 10.6.14, update 9/29/2011

@babowa - Interestingly, I tried ClamXav prior to using virus barrier and the problems you mention (regarding antivirus software proflems), ironically, are issues I had only with ClamAV. It turned my computer into a slug whenever running scans, which I just couldn't work with. VirusBarrier runs very well for me.
I have run ClamXav on my Mac for many years, without the problems you indicate. It is mainly to satisfy some network requirements for an antivirus to be installed, such as university campuses and the commercial environment.
I once tried an early version of Sophos anti-virus which slowed everything down. I think antivirus software taken from the PC environment and hastily adapted for the Mac market are generally not good.
Why don't you take the matter to the Intego forum, where it belongs?
Tycoon24 says  "Then if your computer has somehow mysteriously imploded before being vaporized under its own pressure due to Intego's Mac anti-malware software - maybe try ClamXav and according to babowa things should magically become stable:"
While I admire your obvious ability at hyperbole, I appreciate your underlying idea, that there may be other issues with the poster's computer that could be affecting it's use with any antivirus software.

  • Antivirus Software and Parallels Desktop 10

I am running Parallels Desktop 10 and Windows 7. Do I need antivirus software? Do I need 2 versions, one for the OS X and one for Windows?

The Windows version needs virus protection, the Mac does not.

  • How to change 'always open with' file settings with parallels desktop 4?

    Hi all.
here's my problem; parallels desktop 4 has hijacked file association on some of my file types and wont let me change them back to their mac equivilants
Accidentally clicking on one of these parallels associated apps causes the virtual machine to boot up, slowing my pc down dramatically and causing me grief.
Setting certain files to 'always open with' the equivilant mac app [eg. trying to get text documents to open with textedit as oppose to xp's notepad, hasn'thelped]
    any suggestions ? - i am stumped
    Thanks!

Delete Windows Applications folder in Virtual Machine folder (it's from Mac Side); disable Shared Applications from Configuration Editor.
    ---or---
...other permanent solution to try on Mac side
1 select a file in your finder (e.g. .doc)
    2 press <cmd>
3 go to 'open with' option...
4 select the correct application (e.g. Microsoft Word)
    5 click 'change all' - done...go try
When Microsoft Word is already selected, change that to another app, click 'change all', then set it back to Microsoft Word again and once more click 'change all'.
If still no joy, try strong language....

  • How can I obtain a complete Time Machine backup (about 300 GB), with Windows 7-Parallels Desktop, without the system re-booting automatically?

I have been operating my MacBook Pro 15" (Mac OS 10.7.5), with Windows 7 - Parallels Desktop, for about one and one-half years.  However, whenever I execute a Time Machine back-up, and leave the system to complete the process, I return only to find that my system has re-booted, long before the back-up is completed.  I do not use the auto-backup feature because I do not see how to change the shedule for backups away from the default schedule of hourly backups (too my stain on performance).  Is there something that I am missing in setting up for such a back-up?  I am currently operating away from home, using wi-fi for Internet access.

  • Windows 8 won't install on my Macbook Pro, have installed Parallel Desktops 9.

Am trying to download Windows 8 onto my Macbook Pro. I've installed Parallel Desktops 9. The Windows download keeps telling me it can't download because the setup file is not supported by OS X. Parallel Desktops is telling me I can install Windows via a PC, DVD or image file. Does this mean I cannot install Windows by downloading it.

    Hi my friends
I was wondering if you help me
    I have a macbook pro ( mid 2010 ) MC374

What do I do to repair that ?

Try installing the Cirrus driver from the BootCamp 4.0.4326 download:

I read various things saying I should install the RealTek driver, but this didn't do me any good.  Two seconds after running the CirrusAudio32.exe, my speakers came to life.  Now Windows is dinging, chirping, and all that.
This is on a MacBook Air A1369.

  • A few questions about MacBooks and Parallels Desktop.

I have a few questions about MacBooks and Parallels Desktop.
    1) I understand I need at least 1GB of RAM to run Parallels Desktop but what about the hard drive, is the stock 60GB drive big enough?
    2) Related to question 1, even if it was big enough to allow me to install and run Windows would the 60GB drive be enough if I wanted to install a Linux distribution as well?
    3) This has nothing to do with Parallels Desktop but thought I'd ask it here anyway, do Apple Stores carry just the stock MacBooks, or do they carry other configurations?
    Thanks
    Keith

    1. Depend on how intensive you use that HD for saving data on both Mac OS and XP. For standard installation on both OS X and XP, the space of 60 Gb is enough.
    2. Same answer as no 1. You can install all three on that HD space, but the extra spacce available will be less and less for your data. You can save your data on external or back up on cd/dvd and erase it from the HD to keep the free space.
Remember to leave at least 2 or 3 Gb for virtual memory usage.
    3. Just call them, maybe they don't have it in store stock, but by appointment they might configure one for you before your pick-up date.
    Good Luck

  • Windows 7 on Boot Camp stuck at black screen with blinking cursor... starts up fine in Parallels desktop

    Hi,
Recently my dad's Windows 7 (Ultimate 64-bit) on his Mac Pro has stopped working. It gets stuck at a black screen with a blinking cursor. I've waited at least five minutes and it doesn't do anything, I have to power it off.
However it starts up perfectly fine and intact in Parallels desktop. If I insert the original installation DVD and boot from the Disc that says 'Windows' it will boot into the partition and work fine, unless I press a key to boot from the DVD.
I find both these things to be strange. The partition is backed up, which is fine, but I'd rather not have to re-install it if possible.
I have booted from the DVD and tried to repair the disk. It said it found a problem with something related to startup and that it needed to restart to repair it. I clicked yes, and then held alt/opt and (I think wrongly) booted back into the disc rather than the Windows partition. However it now says that it can't detect any problems.
In the repair my computer section when booting from the DVD, it detects the OS as Windows Vista Business. I followed these steps I found online:
Fixed! Peroblem was I think using OEM, which Bootcamp advise against using... they advise to use retail only. Fixed like this:
    1. Put the Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start your computer.
    2. Hold down Option key till all available disks are displayed and select DVD. Press a key when you are prompted.
    3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then 4. click Next.
    5. Click Repair your computer.
    6. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
7.In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
    Type (these commands are safe)
    Code: Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
    Code: Bootrec.exe /FixBoot
    Code: Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd
    *Press ENTER after each command.*
    *Restart your computer.*
    Done. Rockin'
FixMbr was successful, as was FixBoot. However RebuildBcd reported that it found no Windows installations.
Does anyone know what could be wrong here? I should note that recently I removed the drive Windows 7 is installed on and put it back in. Also Windows Updates probably have been done by my dad. Not sure if they could be the problem.

    Cult, welcome to the forum.
It sounds like you have a failing power supply unit (PSU).  This will cause the symptoms that you describe.  If the computer isn't getting enough power, it can cause numerous problems.  You can try disconnecting any unnecessary components to see if it will boot.  Here is a guide to help you troubleshoot the problem.

  • Using Apple Magic Mouse With Windows 7 64 bit and Parallels Desktop 8 questions

I will be getting an iMac in the coming months and installing Parallels Desktop 8 and Windows 7 64 bit.
I was wondering if I would have the functions of been able to left click, right click, scroll (preferably vertically but also occasionally horizontally) with the Apple Magic Mouse when I'm running Windows 7 through Parallels Desktop 8?
I just wondered if anyone has installed Parallels Desktop 8 and Windows 7 and have you been able to do what i mentioned above and also have you come across any other issues, problems whilst using the Apple Magic Mouse on the Windows side?
If there is any problems/issues with doing the above, is there anything I will need to do to get the above functionality to work?
    Thanks in advance.

Sometimes scrolling is a bit too fast, becuase Win 7 isn't made to use with the Magicmouse or trackpad.
The only thing i miss / doesn't work ist the middle mouse button!
Thanks very much for the help stz-42 its much appreciated.
Providing I can left click, right click, scroll, then that's OK for me as I will be spending the vast amount of my time on the Mac side.

  • How do I install Microsoft Office 2013 on my Mac via my Windows 8 Parallels Desktop 8 partition?

I recently bought a copy of Windows 8, Microsoft Office 2013 and Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac.
I wanted to install a Windows partition on my Mac so that I could run MS Office 2013 on a virtual machine.
I set up the VM, and everything was looking fine and worked smoothly.
Then, when I inserted the MS Office 2013 disk into the CD drive, nothing happened!
I tried to install MS Office 2013 but to no avail.
Does anyone know how to overcome this issue?
    Thanks.

In the Configure menu item, under Virtual Machine, configure the CD/DVD to be recognized by your SuperDrive:
The only drawback is that you have to quit Parallels for the drive to be recognized by the Mac again.
I just purchased the Office 365 subscription for both Office 2011 on my Mac and Office 2013 on my Windows 7 side - sure makes life simpler, and less expensive.
