Virus/Cleaning/Ver. 4.3.5

Question 1:  Is it true that ipad 2s are not subject to virus attacks like PCs are and thus, do not need software like Norton, etc.?  If not true, what sofrware is applicable to ensure the ipad 2 remains clean?
Question 2: How do you clean an ipad 2 in terms of all the garbage that collects over time as is found on a PC?  I know about the Safari clean process, but get no feed back that it is doing anything after pressing the screen to clean the history, cookies and cache.
Question 3:  What did the recent updated software (4.3.5) do?
Thanks.

Question 1:  Is it true that ipad 2s are not subject to virus attacks like PCs are and thus, do not need software like Norton, etc.?  If not true, what sofrware is applicable to ensure the ipad 2 remains clean?
It would be very difficult for anyone to get a virus or worm onto an iPad since the only place you can obtain software unless you jailbreak the iPad is from the Apple's App Store. In addition, the design of iOS makes very difficult the sort of interaction between apps and the OS that a virus or worm requires. So there is no real need for antivirus on the iPad, and it's probable that traditional antivirus apps would not work for the same reason that a virus wouldn't.
Question 2: How do you clean an ipad 2 in terms of all the garbage that collects over time as is found on a PC?  I know about the Safari clean process, but get no feed back that it is doing anything after pressing the screen to clean the history, cookies and cache.
The sort of cruft that collects on a desktop OS can't collect on an iOS-based device since data is stored within each app. There's no way for stray preference files and such to remain on the iOS device when an app is removed.
Question 3:  What did the recent updated software (4.3.5) do?

    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using Dr.Web Light from the App Store. It's free, and since it's from the App Store, it won't destabilize the system. If you prefer one of the better known commercial products, then Thomas recommends using Sophos.(Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) If you already use Sophos, then be aware of this if you are using Mavericks: OS X Mavericks- Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that

    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on

from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.

  • Anyone with knowledge of Clamxav as a virus cleaner for my mac pro

Although I have repeatedly asked about whether or not to install spyware and told no need- my accounts have been compromised and I run an old computer PC in household-- anyone iwth knowledge of clamxav- will it do more harm than good

    my accounts have been compromised
Which accounts have been compromised? If you are referring to some online account, such as an e-mail account, there is no reason to suspect that you have malware on your computer. That sort of thing happens all the time without malware being involved. Hackers get access to people's e-mail accounts remotely all the time, and if you used the same password for multiple other accounts, chances are good that the hackers will be able to find those accounts by searching through your e-mail and then using the same username/e-mail and password. For more information about e-mail account hacking, see:
Someone is sending messages from my e-mail address!
Of course, if you've got an outdated Windows machine and have accessed those accounts from it, malware could very well be involved. But that would be Windows malware and not a problem to be solved here.

  • Proxy Settings Re-Appear after Reboot in Registry Post Malware Clean (Windows 8.1 x64)

    Hey Guys -
My main system at home hosts many different things for me.  Because I'm an idiot and had protection disabled, I caught some malware which I cleaned off soon
afterwards.  The malware was listed as Trojan.Generic.KD or something similar.  It had enabled Proxy and set it to 127.0.0.1:58054.  I ran Malwarebytes, Spybot, then ExecuteIt to clean the malware off and currently the scans from all 3 apps
come back clean.  I also had to manually disable proxy via IE settings.
I have one specific app which for whatever reason will use Proxy settings if they are there over anything else and doesn't offer and configuration to disable it.
Even though proxy is disabled (and cleared) in IE, this app still doesn't work and I still seemingly get redirected to ads in Chrome sometimes.  The log file of the app showed it was trying to connect through 127.0.0.1:58054.  The thing is,
IE Settings still show Proxy disabled!
    The Issue
I checked many things are read a few articles to try to fix this including different Windows 8.1 settings, local Group Policy, startup items, checking Run keys
in HKLM and HKCU for "out of place" entries, and more.  Finally, I opened the registry and did s keyword search for ":58054" and found one key with it.  I cleared out all of the data and set the EnableProxy string from "1"
to "0", rebooted, and tried again but the app still failed with the same log message.  I went back into the registry and found out that the strings I changed had all been changed back!  Below is the key / strings I'm talking about which
    are located in HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings.  It's odd because I usually deal with HKLM and HKCU and don't think I've ever worked in ".DEFAULT" on any system ever before.
I know that a full OS re-install is suggested - and I actually do it every 3-4 months religiously - but - I currently don't have the time for the full day it
takes to perform due to how many things it hosts.
Any ideas on how I can get this to stop coming back after each restart until I can perform the re-install?  Below are the system specs.  Thanks!
    System Specs
    - Intel i7-3770k / 16gb RAM
    - x3 partitions  256gb SSD for OS & Apps  /  24tb Disk Pool for Storage  /  500gb Hybrid drive for App installs
    - Windows 8.1 Update 1 x64 (Fully Patched)
    Thanks again!
    Ben K.

    Hi,
.default is the profile for the Local System account and is an alias for
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18, Consequently, settings in HKEY_USERS\.Default are used by programs and services that run as Local System.
    In addition to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
    Settings, please also check HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
    Settings and HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings, make sure all proxy server disabled, then press F5 to refresh registry, check the application, if the issue disappears, the the registry entry is the culprit. Then please reboot the PC, if the issue appears again, the virus is not cleared in your
system. In this case, please try other virus clean program if possible, meanwhile, check if there're unknown software installed in your system.

  • Recover from Cryptolock virus

how best to recover from the cryptolock virus? Also the "firefox.exe" file was lost during the virus cleaning. The rest of the dir tree under "Programs files/Mozilla Firefox" dir is intact. Of course all standard file types that this virus goes after are encrypted under "My Documents" dir tree. Most files are there but others are encrypted. All of this happen on a windows XP home 32-bit PC.
Firefox was the default web access program, so many other programs that try to access the web through Firefox crash or do not run right. There are a number of add ons to Firefox (such as epub, and other readers, PDF, translators, download manager, etc.). Some of the these have files that where encrypted.

Do to the non-response I got from this forum, I had to take solving this in my own hands and here is the results.
First I made a backup all of the dir sets that Firefox uses under "Programs" and "Documents and Settings". This was a precaution against losing some file that sill maybe needed, such as the bookmarks and other personalization data. Being there was no help from this forum on what to do, I copied everything. Then down loaded the latest version (29 in this case) of the installer on a different computer and put it on a USB drive to move to the computer under repair. MS Internet Explorer was never setup or used (although the updates where installed) on the repair computer. I did not want to go through time to see if IE is working, it is not the point here. I then moved the installer file to a temp dir on the repair computer, then ran it. It installed all of Firefox and as expected had some issues with the add-ons. Going through the add-ons one at a time, most just needed a update download and where fine, the Microsoft .Net need to be removed/uninstalled and reinstalled to get it working. Then I went back through the dir sets and removed all of the encrypted files that where left behind, they can't be used anyway. The backup files where not needed and I will be deleting them soon. At this time all is well. See it wasn't that hard to explain.
And to Philipp, Yes I will be moving to a newer OS in the near future. But I will be doing that at my own time of choice and need to run the two computers in parallel as I transfer data and programs.
One should never be in a hurry to spend money.

If virus cleaning can't rid of it just format the phone. No virus can infect a phone unless you allow it or been dupe to install a apps that's virus itself:
    For Formatting *#7370#
    Or you could try:
    1. Switch off the phone.
    2. Hold down the following three buttons: Green (the call answer button), * button, and '3' button.
    3. While holding these buttons, press the power button and switch on the phone.
    4. When the message 'Formatting' appears on the screen, release all of the buttons.
Make a restore of the backup that you did( date before)  before you got that malware !
Knowledge not shared is knowledge wasted!
If you find it helpfull, it's not hard to click the STAR..

  • Poor Performance after start up and Frequent Crashes

I have a brand new imac i order a little over 6 months ago, i immediately migrated my old imac's files to the new mac and everything worked great but then slowly began to degrade in performance and now i have nothing but problems that have gotten worse.
The first problem occurred with a slow performance speed after about a month of amazing performance.
Then I noticed the new magic mouse i had ordered with the computer would lose connection with the computer causing it to crash, also the new mouse would not hold a charge for long. My last magic mouse did not have this issue.
My computer would fall asleep and then i could be unable to wake it by using my mouse, even plugging in an apple pro wired mouse would not work, i had to turn the power on and off to restart
My bluetooth was acting funny trying to connect to devices i hadn't authorized
    Then came a kernel crash.
Then came apple 3 tired support who after weeks of diagnosis over the phone were stumped.
I tried the following to fix the problems myself:
    reset the Pram
    Repaired Disk Permissions
    Checked the hardware
    reinstalled the OS
Checked for and installed all software updates
    Reset the SMC
Ran 3rd party software "mackeeper" to optimize my files and check for viruses
Clean up unneeded files so plenty of memory
And finally downloaded a 3rd part program called "idrefrag" to defrag my system files.
    nothing worked
I was unable to take additional time to deal with the issue, i work and attend school online and was extremely busy during the summer so i had to just deal with the issues because being without my computer was not an option i had.
After my busy summer ended, the problems had only gotten worse
Now, not only does the mac fall asleep and not wake up and not respond to the magic mouse to wake up or reconnect when the mouse and mac lose signal, but now when i plug in a usb flash drive to my external flash drive port, it's like playing russian roulette, half the time it's fine, the other half the computer freeze upon insertion of the drive. I shouldn't have so much anxiety plugging in a 8gb flash drive.
but now on to the worst part, before the summer when i had to restart after crashes it was normal, but now when i restart, the computer acts like it has to remember how to even be a computer again. Upon restarting after the classic Mac tone:
My mac desktop begins to reload, although the icons on the top right appear then disappear and then appear to load back up very slowly.
Moving files to another folder or tp the trash is painstakingly slow, i get a message saying "preparing to move file" that goes on for 10 minutes.
Simple tasks like trying to copy and paste or access my "places" on the side bar like "movies, "Pictures" etc cause a pinwheel and then each "place" has to load all the files as if it's searching the computer for them all before i have access to them, this can take 5-10 minutes
When i click on an application from the dock to load, it just bounces for a while and then finally starts up but takes 5 minutes or more to be able to access without a pinwheel
Overall the computer basically forgets how to be a computer and has to relearn how to do the simplest tasks, the next 24 hours is plagued by pinwheels and slow performance and then it acts fine again, but i can never shut it down or it start all over again, so i just let it fall asleep when not in use and cross my fingers that when i come back it will respond to the mouse and wake up, half the time it does, the other half, i have to restart by holding the power button down and then pressing it to start up again.
I had to just adapt, so i have a good system down now and so when I restart i run the system disk utility and repair the HD 1 & 2 's permission which always seems to have a lot of issues and that kinda helps speed along the 24 hour relearning process. But i shouldn't have to do all this stuff, i spent 3,000 on this computer, i bought all the upgrades and after a couple of months of amazing performance i was left with a time bomb and 3 tier apple support who have no idea where to go and now wont even call me back despite my paying for 4 years of apple care, I am at a total loss of what to do, i can't afford to send the machine off for diagnosis and repair and frankly think Apple should send me a new machine since not only does the mac itself present problems, but so does the new magic mouse, and the rechargeable batteries and charger i purchased from them as well.
    My Mac info:
    Mac OS X Version 10.6.8
    Model Name:          iMacModel Identifier:          iMac12,1
    Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
    Processor Speed:          2.8 GHz
    Number of Processors:          1
    Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
    L3 Cache:          8 MB
    Memory:          16 GB
    Serial -ATA
    any suggestions?

Thats a shame, you should be enjoying your mac!, what was the final outcome of the Apple support guys?. I think if it were me and i had tried tried everything that you have including the support tech. i would be pressing for a replacement mac.

  • Can't print test results as "user"

    Hi,
I have a program  written in Labview 6.1 by another developer. This program runs on a
PC with Windows 2000 ver. 5.0 Bld 2195 SP 3. Even though this is a
stand alone test station and cannot ever be connected to the internet,
we have McAfee virus protection ver. 8.01 installed and running. Test
data is written to an Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is then stored
on the hard drive and printed on a dedicated printer.
    When the operator is
logged on as a "user" he can run the program but he cannot print or
store his test results. Also, I have noticed that all the print vi's on
the function palatte are missing. Even the Excel and Word ones
    When
I log on as a "system admin". I can run the program, print and store the
test results. Also, all the print vi's on the function palatte are
present and functional. Including the Excel and Word vi's.
For security reasons, no test operator can be a system admin.
So, how can I have my test operator be a "user" or "power user" and not a "sys admin", run the test program, print and store the results.
    Please
note, upgrading the system or software would take an act of God (i.e. permission
from the military and the customer and DSS.), so that is not an option.
I have also tried making the test operator a "power user" and he still cannot print his test results.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Strange System Update, BIOS hacked?

Hi, last night my laptop rebooted without warning. During the reboot I got the "Lenovo" boot screen with it saying "Updating your system" for about 5 - 10 minutes.  After looking at the logs it seems the reboot was called be a program caled GeekBuddy which I have never used but it seems allows other people to take control of your PC.  Is this "Updating your system" likely to have been someone installing a dodgy BIOS?  If so is there anything I can do to remove any malware that may have been insallled in the BIOS which reinstalling Windows won't remove?

Sorry I missed this topic when it was posted in July. As richk mentioned, having backups is always good if you run into a malware problem that cannot be cleaned and requires a reformat.
The GeekBuddy that I am familiar with is a support system whereby a Comodo expert makes a remote connection to the computer for tech support, virus cleaning, software installation, and printer setup. It has been available in a paid version and a trial version. Comodo is a legitimate, reputable company. I doubt that their techs would remote to your computer without your permission. However, if you have ever used any Comodo products, such as their firewall, or Internet Security, GeekBuddy may have been installed along with that. GeekBuddy can be uninstalled via your Programs and Features.

Scanned for viruses, clean (Combofix, Gmer, Housecall, Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, unhackme, tdss killer, NPE, HijackThis)
Disabled Norton Antivirus (Temporarily) to see if it was a confliction
Only happens in IE (8 & 9, tried both) but Chrome and Firefox work fine so I'm thinking it must be in the IE plugin or IE itself
I've removed both flash and java and all other Adobe products and reinstalling, didn't work.  Removed all using the corresponding removal tools for adobe and java products then reinstalled, didn't work.
I've also tried resetting IE completely and removing user customizations, didn't work.  Reset security levels to default, worked once but then wouldn't display again and security levels were at default.
I am up to date on flash, java, reader, and Windows so I don't believe updating is going to do anything since I am on the latest update.

    Help!!!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • What is the fourth control button in the upper right corner of the FF 4 window?

I had to reinstall FF4 during a virus cleaning process, and there are now 4 control buttons displayed in the upper right corner of the window. From the right, there's the usual "Close" (red), "Restore down" and "Minimize" buttons (both blue), and then there's a fourth, green button, with no "ToolTip" associated with it. What's the behavior of this new button?
I'm not normally this curious, but I've just had a battle with the "Antivirus Antispam 2011" malware, and am very sensitive to new graphics that I don't recognize.
    I'm running XP Pro.

I've found over the past day that its presence comes and goes, presumably based on background apps.
As I'm unable to predict when I'll catch it next time, it's best I close this question and I'll reopen a new question when I can provide a screenshot.
Many thanks for your response, and I'll watch for its reappearance.
