"Virus" in Airport network options with chain-link symbol (not your usual four bars)

My university has been having internet problems. Is this weird symbol related, you think? Or is it something I need to check out with my computer?
Any thoughts? I don't dare click on it.
Internet is back up (802.1x — but this "Virus" is still there as an option)

Nothing nefarious. It is a HotSpot such as provided by an iPhone or iPad that is visible to your computer.

As far as I can see the dwlg510 is an wireless adapter for PC. Not an accesspoint. You need a router.

    Hi DaileyT,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:
When do Apple wireless devices appear in AirPort Utility?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3624
    Troubleshooting missing devices
If your Apple wireless device doesn't show up in the wireless device list, try the following:
Check to see that the device is turned on.
Check that the device is connected to the network via Ethernet or in wireless range of your computer.
Make sure the device has had adequate time to start up and become discoverable. In the case of Apple wireless devices that are not connected via Ethernet, AirPort Utility scans for new devices once every 15 seconds. From the time a device becomes discoverable (typically around one minute), it could take up to another 15 seconds before the device is displayed in the list.
If you have just configured a new Apple Wireless device, upgraded the firmware, selected "Restore Default Settings..." or have hard reset and configured an Apple wireless device and it does not show up in AirPort Utility after restarting, you may have an incorrect setting. You may want to hard reset the unit and set it up again.
If you are connected to a specific wireless network, all Apple wireless devices which make up that network will appear. However, if you "Restore Default Settings..." from AirPort Utility, or hard reset a device that is out of physical wireless range of the computer, you will need to move the device closer the computer to configure it again.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • New Airport Network - issues with some specific features

    Hello,
I have just changed my wifi system for an Airport Network, with one AirPort Extreme and 2 AirPort Express. The goal was to extend the wifi network to the entire house. Everything is fine, all my computers are able to connect to the network and are able to access the internet. The AirPort Network is connected to the internet with the PPPoE procedure.
The issue is very specific here.
    1. I use Outlook 2007 to handle my e-mails. Since I have shifted to the AirPort Network, Outlook is not able to connect to pop server anymore for 4 of my 5 accounts. Hotmail (pop) is functionning alright but Gmail is blocked !
    2. Windows Update is also unable to connect to the appropriate server.
Maybe there is more but it's all I have noticed so far. I have not changed a single parameter by myself on my computers and both are affected the same way.
I first thought it was a firewall issue but disabling my software firewall (Bullguard) did not change anything. Vista Firewall is not active. Maybe is it the internal firewall of the AirPort Extreme ? But that would not explain why Outlook can send messages (smtp works fine).
Any idea or similar experience ? Thank you in advance.
    Best regards,
    AdG

Maybe my problem is just bad luck ! I might have shifted to my new network
the wrong day. One day earlier, I would not have seen any difficulty... if this is it.
    Quakes slow cyber connections
By Zhu Shenshen | 2009-8-18 | NEWSPAPER EDITION
SHANGHAI'S international Internet connections slowed significantly yesterday after earthquakes rocked Taiwan and southern Japan. It was unclear last night how long repairs might take. Millions of Chinese Netizens were unable to connect to overseas Websites or use popular online chat tools yesterday afternoon.
About 15 million MSN instant message users in Shanghai and other parts of China were affected as the main servers are in the United States. Connections to most overseas Websites including those run by Yahoo and the New York Times were also clogged.
The chain of events that led to the service disruption had its origin in Typhoon Morakot, which struck Taiwan on August 7 and led to a later breakdown in an undersea telecommunications cable system.
Local Internet traffic was not influenced because transmissions were routed to a backup channel. But that cable failed yesterday near Busan, South Korea, apparently the victim of the earthquakes, according to China Unicom.
The failure affected Asian communications to the US and Europe.
The epicenter of the first quake, which struck at 8:05am yesterday, was about 188 kilometers southeast of Hualien on Taiwan's east coast at a depth of 11km, the island's weather bureau said. The US Geological Survey put the magnitude at 6.7.
The second quake, which was centered close to the first at a depth of 20km and struck at 6:10pm, measured 6.1, the Taiwan weather bureau said. It was also felt in Japan's Ishigaki Island.
"We've sent a team to repair the broken cable, but we can't give a detailed timetable for when it will be completed," said Song Guixiang, a public relations official for China Telecom.
The schedule will depend heavily on weather conditions, Song said.
Repairs are handled by a team comprising the carriers that use the cable.
In most cases it takes one to two months to fully repair damaged undersea cables. In the meantime, telecom operators will try to reroute traffic to operating cables and satellite systems.
Domestic Internet connections and international call services were normal yesterday, the carriers said.

  • Airport Network Options Problem

    Hi All
I have just upgraded from 10.3 to 10.4.5 and have found a problem with the Airport Network prefs pane which I can't fix. Originally the interface to the Airport Networks pane was not showing correctly and was still setup as in 10.3. I only noticed this as I had another Mac running 10.4 and was copying the settings from it. The only way to fix this was to delete the Locations and start from scratch. After doing this everything seemed okay apart from the Options button in the Airport settings. When pushed it doesn't open anything. I don't want to do a reinstall for such a small problem so does anyone else know of a quick fix to solve this?
    Thanks

  • Oracle Advanced Networking Option with Linux

I want to set up a linux client that works with an Solaris based Oracle 8i EE server using an encrypted connection.
I have successfully done this with NT clients. However the Linux client responds an "ORA-12657: No algorithms installed"
Isn't Oracles Advanced Networking Option available for Linux?
If it is, how do I install it?

Check to see if ANO is linked in with SQL*Plus by running the following:
    cd to oracle_home/bin
    adapters sqlplus
If after running the adapters command and ANO does not show as being linked in,
    perform the following:
    1. Change directorys to oracle home/sqlplus/lib
    2. Run the following unix command to relink SQL*Plus:
    make -F ins_sqlplus.mk install
    3. Change to oracle home/bin directory.
    4. Re-run "adapters sqlplus" to verify that ANO is now linked in.

  • Is my airport network secure with Personal File Sharing on?

I have my Airport Extreme connected to a cable modem. I have a G4 tower w/external hard drive connected by ethernet cable to the airport base station. I use a MacBook laptop wirelessly around the house to access the internet.
Each computer is set up for multiple users but we don't use passwords with any of our user accounts. I have Personal File Sharing turned on in both computers and am able to access accounts and drives from the other computer in the house.
I do have password protection (WPA/WPA2 personal) set up on the Airport network itself.
Does the fact that I don't have passwords on the user accounts mean someone outside of my home could get into my home network and access my files?
Does the afp address I use to access the other computer in the house afp://10.0.XXX mean it is restricted to people outside of my home?
Any guidance someone could provide is appreciated.

Does the fact that I don't have passwords on the user accounts mean someone outside of my home could get into my home network and access my files?
    No.
WPA (with a strong non-dictionary password) is going to keep everyone off you network.
If they could get on your network, then they would be able to access your files.

  • Sync Classic with Outlook - No Option With BB Link - Windows Contacts Only

    Hello,
BB Link is not showing any options for syncing with Outlook 2013 (365) - the only choice I have is Windows Contacts.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled BB Link, and tried on a second PC.
I really need to figure this out - does anybody have any suggestions on how to work through this problem.
    Thanks!
    Andy

I have MS Office 365 and all things are syncing well, but I'm not sure I understand your question.
My Outlook 2013 Contacts and Calendar sync across all my devices (BB Classic, desktop and 3 iPads) through Office 365.  There is no need to use BB Link.
Except, that is, if you want to sync Calendar events further back than the max 6 months that the BB Classic allows.  I have about 20,000 Calendar entries going back to 1994 and they have been synced onto my Classic using BB Link, and they appear in a separate Calendar on my device called BB Link.
So can you explain which your problem is?  Is it that nothing is syncing through Office 365 (no need for BB Link), or is it that you can't sync events older than 6 months onto your device?
By the way, assuming you are still within 30 days of purchase of your new Classic, dont forget you can call the "Complimentary 30 Day Direct Support from BlackBerry".  You should have received a card in the box with the number you should call.  I live in the UK and I had reason to call the UK Toll Free number, the service was excellent.

  • How to deselect the "close network" option with Time Capsule?

After selecting the "close network" option in the settings I lost connection.  When I check the Utility AirPort the machine looks for wireless devices but finds nothing because it's hidden.    How do I deselect  the "close network" option and see my network again?   Tks!!!

Temporarily, connect an Ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <--> ports on the back of the Time Capsule and turn off the wireless on the computer.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Click the Wireless Network Options button
Remove the check mark next to "Create a closed network"
Click Update to save your settings and allow 25-30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart.

  • Airport Express works with my Mac but not XP Pro

Hello I have an Airport Express that I set up and use with my G4 laptop flawlessly.
My Problem is trying to get my PC, running XP Pro, to play-nice with the Airport Express.
The nutty thing is that this set up was working perfectly for months and then quit for some reason. Anyway, the I use WEP encryption and I have the same passwords set for both computers. Now, the PC sees the AE and is apparently able to connect with it but gives the alert that it has only limited connectivity and functionality with the network. Strange...
Now, as far as I can tell there are two passwords to the AE. One is the Base Station password and the other one is for the encryption. The PC never seems to ask for the Base Station password which seems odd. As I said before, this worked well at one time (with WEP) so I don't know what's going on. I also obviously don't know XP at all so I apologize. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.
    -B

Thanks for the link. I have set the AE to use WPA encryption using a 13 character plain-text network key password. I'm led to believe that this would be a palateable password for both the Mac and PC...of course this doesn't fix things. I should know that simply entering the same network key on both computers would not work. That would be too easy... Well now, in XP under Network Properties it only offers WEP or None for Data Encryption. This is weird right? Thanks a lot for all your help.

  • Am I right in thinking that you can't extend your network wirelessly with a time capsule unless your base station is an apple one?

My new time capsule will only allow me to extend my network via ethernet cable.
What I really want to do is use it wirelessly as an extension wirelessly.
The option is there (under other options in airport utility) but when I select it and move on it reverts back to create a new network.
    Why is this?
Am I trying to achieve the impossible?
I have an airport express and that be added to my network wirelessly with no issue at all.
    Please help
    Russell

Can I just "join" the network with my time capsule like I have with my airport express?
Apple does not present this option....but, even if they did.....this would be the worst possible option to use for backups.
Can I use my airport express as a base (connected via Ethernet to the router) for my time capsule to extend from wirelessly?
Yes, you can. The AirPort Express would be configured to "create a wireless network"......then.....the Time Capsule could be configured to "extend a wireless network".
It is critically important that the Time Capsule be located where it can receive a very strong wireless signal from the AirPort Express in this type of setup. The more that you have line-of-sight between the AirPort Express and Time Capsule, the better your network performance will be and the faster that backups will occur to the Time Capsule.
A better option in terms of performance would be to connect the Time Capsule to your current modem/router using an Ethernet connection and have the Time Capsule "create" the network. Then, use the Express to "extend" the network.
Here, I am assuming that you have a new Time Capsule.

  • Airport network speed - quick answer (and a note about audio drop offs)

I saw this question come up a lot when i was reading how to stop the airport express from dropping the audio signal... **How much bandwidth is all this using?**
Quick answer is about a half a Megabit per second on my network. yipes.
to check for yourself (...if you're using XP...), press control-alt-delete to open the Task Manager, then go to the Networking tab. You'll be able to see your usage there. Multiply the percent of Network Utilization by the Link Speed (for me, about 9% times by 11Mbps = 1Mbit used per second, but I stream 2 connections at all times, so that's where we get 1/2 Mb)...keep in mind that your network utilization is really determined by your router's make and configuration, as well as (and this is the real factor) the amount of collisions and interference in your network.
*and a note about a healthy airport signal and audio drop offs*
... looking at the Networking tab, you shouldn't see an eratic graph (it shouldnt jump back and forth from 0% to 100% and back). a few high spikes every few seconds is ok, even rising to 100% is expected, but if your average network usage is too high (say 20%), there's too much interference. secure your network (WEP enable) and/or filter the MAC addresses. AND play around with the wireless channel used for boradcasting. really.. try it... try all the channels... i got really discouraged reading all the voodoo answers on other posts. (personally, i stayed on channel 6,... i rebooted my whole network of computers and routers at once and that got rid of the congestion for me... for now)
...and if all else fails, call 800 275 2273 for tech support.

    Selamat Phil Smith,
Actually do we know each other, cause i know a phil smith.
Actually an ether net cable is OK for the short term. But if i get another computer it may get complex. Spent a lot removing cables too.... Looks like i will have to buy the special modem router... Painful $600.
This share internet thing over airport looks like a great idea till you realise it disables access to the ariport network for the computer doing the sharing.
Cheers and thanks for the idea

  • My Airport works fine with my Macs but not with Windows netbook

I bought my first Apple in 1987 and have never owned a Windows computer. I bought an MSI Wind netbook (too long of a story to go into here) and I can't seem to get it to recognize my Airport network. I have three Macs, an iPad and two iPhones that have no trouble getting on the network. Using this Windows machine is like learning a foreign language. I have no idea where to begin troubleshooting. It has XP installed and is a used machine. It seems to work great in every other aspect except for this.
If anyone could point me to some step by step instructions or have any suggestions, I would appreciate it. I have a feeling it's something simple, but I am in foreign territory! Thanks.

Ok, I guess we will just have to assume that the wireless capability of your netbook is functional.
Let's start by using Windows XP's automated network troubleshooting feature, called Network Diagnostics.
To use Network Diagnostics, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Help and Support.
    2. Click the link to Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems, and then click Network Diagnostics in the list on the left.
    3. When you click Scan your system, Network Diagnostics gathers configuration information and performs automated troubleshooting of the network connection.
    4. When the process is completed, look for any items that are marked "FAILED" in
red, expand those categories, and then view the additional details about what the testing showed.
    Please post back your results.

  • Airport/TC working with MacBook Pro but not with my Mac Pro???

    Hi all,
I've got a Time Capsule connected to a Westell Modem through AT&T. Needless to say; I've had a lot of issues with my setup but this one has my stumped.
After my network crashed a few days ago, I reset everything and got my Airport network running on my laptop. I cannot get it to work on my Mac Pro. My MP doesn't even see the Time Capsule when I run Airport Utility. It'll show the network on the Airport Icon at the top of the page and will even let me choose it when picking a network to connect to.
Anyone know what to do, please help!!!
    Thanks!!!
    Chris

On the Mac that won't connect using wireless:
Open System Preferences and click on Network
Click the Airport connection on the left
Click the Advanced button on the lower right
Look for the name of your wireless network and delete it using the - (minus) button at the bottom of the connection list. Delete any other networks that you do not need as well
    Apply changes
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > KeyChain Access
Under the Kind column, look for any listings of Airport Network Password and delete them
    Restart your computer
Keep your Mac close to the TC for now and click the AirPort icon at the top of the screen and try to log on to your wireless network.

i just bought an airport extreme, but it doesnt reach the swimming pool area. i have a Tp-link 740N, here. can i use it? and how can i configure it?

The only way to extend the range of a non-Apple base station is to connect it to your Extreme with an Ethernet cable.
Its range cannot be extended wirelessly.
