Virus in Motherboard?

I have a computer that is just loaded with viruses and spyware due to leaving for a week and not having a password set to keep others off my computer. I tried reformatting the hard drive but the virus and other objects remained. I then tried a low level format that took me almost a full 24 hours to run. This did not get rid of the infection. Where the hell is this virus hiding that it survives a low level format? Someone told me that the only other place that would not lose data upon shutting down is the motherboard. Would it be possible that this virus is hiding in the Bios? If so how would I go about completely reinstalling the bios to clear this. I have been working on this the past 4 days and its driving me nuts.

I have Norton Anti-Virus and when I ran it the only thing that it found was Bloodhound.W32.EP this was located in the Localsrv.exe file in the system32 folder. Norton was unable to repair, quarantine or delete this file. I got so sick of it running my computer that I went in and altered all references to the file in the registry and rebooted. then Norton quarantined that file. I then went back in and changed all references back to where they were. After that I havent heard anything about the virus. Im unable to run live update becuase whatever virus is left on the pc is not letting me update norton so Im not picking anything up on the scan. When I open msconfig there is a load of crap I dont recognize and tried making it so they dont start. When I do this they simply seem to come up with another strange name so I delete the file. When I do this it makes another name up and puts it in startup. Things like "jofqod" and "expl0rer" and "ovvpuzbd". spyware programs are not detecting them. Only spysweep notices them and even it cannot clear them. The moment it clears them they simply put themselves back in. I dont have another drive to borrow becuase nobody wants to get near my pc like it has the plaugue or something terrible. And the trouble with taking my drive somewhere else is that nobody else around here has SATA connection on thier motherboards.

  • Hangs on Blue Screen on Startup

Hi all.  I know there are similar posts to mine, but my questions can not be found so far in my searches.
I have a 2009-ish refurbished Apple Store MacBook Air with a SSD.
Today I restarted my computer, it seemed to be running a bit hot and slow.  After rebooting I could only get it to get to a blue screen and no desktop.  Computer boots normally with grey screen, apple logo and gear icon... following which I get a blue screen, sometimes with a gear other times with no gear or an alternating with/with out gear on blue screen.  Screen never goes to desktop screen but momentarily there appears to be a single pixel square (or possibly a 4 pixel square) of white near the upper left corner that appears momentarily over the blue, then gone.
After searching I have tried the following things...
Tried booting in safe mode (holding down shift) with same results.
Tried doing a PRAM reset with same results.
Tried booting in verbose mode with same results.
Tried booting in single user mode and did the following:
ran fsck -fy and disk verified with no errors, however it did indicate that something had updated.  rebooted with same results.
again ran fsck -fy multitple times with no errors, rebooted with same results.
ran mount -uw, disk reported it was HFS read only journaled... changed drive mount to -o for read write sucessfuly, then ran fsck again and rebooted with same results.
So according to fsck the drive is fine, but if I reboot and then try mount -uw again, it again shows as read only.  I am not sure if this is normal or indicates there is in fact a hard drive problem.  Or perhaps there is a bigger issue.
I do not have a usb CD Rom drive to attempt to boot from OSX Snow Leopard disk in order to test further, I am stuck at the moment.  I do have another laptop and a MacMini which I could potentially use to share a CD over WiFi, but I am unsure if I can boot from a shared CDROM via wifi and if so how to boot into that mode.
Does this sound like a drive issue or potentially something else like a virus or motherboard or graphics card failure?  Thanks in advance for your time and efforts to answer this question.
    bk

Update: Using Remote Install I was able to remotely boot my mac from another laptop's CDROM drive and run Disk Utility from the installer which again passed with out errors like the fsck command.  I also repaired disk permissions.  Upon reboot to the internal SSD, I am again getting the same blue screen.
So, since I can boot remotely and my disk seems to check out ok I am guessing now that there is something wrong with my OS, some kind of corruption has occurred, but that is just a guess.  It is possible I guess for there still to be an actual hard drive or hard ware failure of some kind.
    Any help is still appreciated.

  • ITunes cannot recognize iPhone/iPad via WiFi Sync following motherboard change

    Hi folks,
I'm having a problem with synchronising my iPhone (and iPad) to iTunes on Windows 7 Home Premium via WiFi sync.
This never used to be a problem - both devices would be identified by iTunes (occasionally this was sporadic, however a simple WiFi off/on would usually solve the problem).
I have recently upgraded my motherboard and CPU in my Windows 7 PC and after updating some drivers, etc. all of a sudden, I cannot connect to WiFi Sync anymore. I can still synchronise my devices via the cable - i.e. the devices are correctly identified by the PC, but for some reason post the motherboard change, as soon as I pull the plug out of the device, the device disappears from iTunes.
I can confirm that the "Synchronise this device via WiFi sync" tick boxes are checked, and the Machine Name is the same, so my iPhone is still looking for the same PC.
I'm wondering if because of the motherboard change, there is an internal signature that the iPhone/iPad looks for that is no longer the same.
I have tried uninstalling and re-installing iTunes to no avail. I cannot seem to find any solution to this problem - no matter what I do, iTunes will simply not recognise my devices over WiFi anymore.
    Welcome any advice or thoughts.
    System details:
    - Intel i7 2700K (Upgraded from Intel i3 550)
    - ASUS P8Z68-M Pro (Upgraded from an ASUS P7H55-M/USB3
    - iPhone 4S
    - iPad 2
    - Windows 7 Home Premium
    Cheers,
    Mike.

    Folks,
I thought I should post a follow up - in case any Apple Support people scour these forums.
The problem seems to have resolved by itself, which is both a good and bad thing.
I made absolutely no changes last night, not even a system reboot, to launch iTunes today and the system miraculously discover both my iPhone 4S and my iPad 2. I think this highlights a broader problem is that the WiFi sync capability is inconsistent and very difficult to troubleshoot. I have no idea why it has all of a sudden started working, especially when I have changed no wireless, networking, firewall or Anti Virus settings.
Anyway thank you to those who had a read, and I wish I could provide more insight on why it has started working all of a sudden, and importantly, what caused it to stop working.
Perhaps it is simply like two people - the new PC and its motherboard needed to 'get to know' the devices before it felt comfortable in allowing a connection .
I have no other more rational explanation!
    Cheers all,
    Mike.

    Thoughts
Comparing this system to my old laptop (Centrino Dual Core), the laptop runs about 4X faster since the virus. Before the virus, this system was a dream to work with, super fast speed, never lagged.
I keep thinking that the virus must have damaged somthing on the motherboard, but error messages or motherboard beep codes.
Any other suggestions (short of shotting this system) would be greatly appreciated.

You didn't actually re-flash your BIOS, did you? Yes
If it was fast before the infection, and slow after the reformat, then this is pretty much the only place that anything could be different. I'd be more inclined to test hardware than continue chasing software, in your shoes.
Ran various RAM tests, and the BIOS shows nothing out of the ordinary.
But it's certainly nothing to do with the software, unless the new install was botched for reasons having nothing to do with the virus, or that the virus is actually hiding in one of the spots on the motherboard that can be written to, like the BIOS.
Clear one thing up for us - you say
Adobe Software: Originally CS3 Suite, now CS5 Suite
Does that mean "it ran like a dream with CS3, but now that I have CS5 it's running slow?" Because, if so, you're chasing a red herring - CS5 consumes a lot more in terms of computing resources than does CS3. You should be looking at how to tame CS5's resource consumption, and there are plenty of threads about that.
After the reformat, CS3 Indesign was a dog as well as Acrobat 9 Pro. Upgraded to new CS5 Suite (all but Acrobat 9 Pro). CS3 & 5 Indesign still a dog as well as Acrobat 9 Pro
Lastly, I haven't seen malware hiding in flash ROM on the motherboard more than once in the last decade. It wouldn't generate any error messages or beep codes, either.
Same here, have not witnessed malware/viri infultrating the BIOS since back in 99'. Never the less, it's the only idea I can come up with. I have yet to locate any software for testing the NVIDIA NVS 290 video card. This is the strangest issue I have seen ever.

  • Virus message on Boot

On initial booting up, and prior to windows starting up, I see the following message
"Caution: this hard disk may be infected by virus"
I have checked the hard disk thoroughly on another unit, and it is free of virus.
I have tried with bios setting of boot sector protected on or off, but it makes no difference??  I can still enter after this message, and run into Windows, but I cannot get rid of the message every time the computer boots.
Motherboard  P4N SLI   SATA or Parallel Hard drive
Please help?? I cannot seem to find an answer by searching for a similar issue.

Try clearing CMOS. Check if you have a Virus Protection Scan option is BIOS, if you do, disable it.

  • Heuristic Anti-virus is possible.

    Hello,
Since, LabView, uses boolean algebra as it's foundation, it is now possible to write a Anti-virus package that doesn't need any virus definition files.  There is a big but, and or if about this.  First, you would need to write a complete operating system with LabView.  Due to the boolean nature of the language it is possible to trace data, as if it were digital signals through a processor, or chip.  Viruses illude user input, key loggers, are never on the screen, but take in information continuously without regard for which program is running.  No matter how many programs are chained up or in a multitasking environment, you can still determin if the software is a driver, screen saver, or application.  Extensions can help significantly, but those are there for human interpretation.  If you data in isn't a true user input, if the software doesn't include a visible GUI, if there is no hardware for that driver.  It all becomes measurable without knowing that this or that is a virus.  How would it work in detail.  Well, I labeled it a verified compiler.  Machine code instructions do look all the same, and to operate the fastest and best consist of little else for any reason.  But, what if you compiler worked as a decompiler and could recognize it's own macros refusing to accept anything from any other compiler.  When a program enters the system, it can decompile it to determin if it were compiled by a given compiler and insure that there is no outside code.  Of course this would eliminate Assembly Language Compilers without designing the Operating System to overlook a given security based upon a Programmer's Setup, verses a Standard User's Setup.  This is all fine, but then you cannot allow for things like JAVA, and the works and programs from other compilers.  The inability for software to recognize software and determin if it is or is not safe is all of the reason to use a verified compiler in conjunction with a decompiler.  The number of viruses is so much greater, and consists of programs so much longer that searching for them is taking forever, and with each passing year longer and longer.
With this program language, it doesn't have to be that way, and what it would literally take, is a complete operating system written with this language, and a second decompile to verify program.  It wouldn't give anyone source code, it only checks it's own macros, and makes sure that it isn't a virus based upon the nature of a virus and uses a heuristic search.  It never needs to know how it was written, it just needs to know how it works.

I have 3 computers.  One I built and use for Drafting and CAD, Simulations, and Programming.  Another is a notebook, and the third is this one.  This one is on the internet all of the time, and it doesn't run very well at all.  The Notebook computer has a 64bit processor but, Compaq, installed a 32bit version of Windows Vista, so it works like molassis on a cold day.  This computer is an old 32 bit Dell clunker.  The computer that I use personally for draft etc. is a 64bit quad core machine, running hypertransport technology on the motherboard, DirectX 10.1 on the video card, and a Fatality1 Sound Card.  It boots up in about 15 seconds, and never longer than 30.  It runs well and fast.  But, it's never online.  If I re-installed windows, shortly after that would be only few hours it would spend on line registering software etc.  If you can't boot up, and get to desktop in less than 1 minute, I could honestly believe that you don't really own your computer.  You paid a bunch of advertisers and software companies to let you borrow their machine, which you kept connected to the internet.  For as much as you can do with a computer, you don't know half of what it is capable of, nor what to expect from it.
The whole set of reasons that you have that cause the problems with viruses you are aware of, consists of only two things.
    The programming language
    Operating System
If the programming language recognized it's own high level macros, it could reject any assembly language program, or any other program written by another compiler.
If you are familiar with using logic gates, when you write a program using logic gates as program symbols, you can retrace any input or output to it's source.  Decompiling the program, reproduces the logic gates and how they are linked.  There are only so many ways for information to get to your computer.  Storage Media, Modem and Network Connections.
If you are aware of how everyone has worked to fix this problem with viruses, most write a list.  The list of commands in any computer language is shorter than the list of viruses that exist as a whole.  If you aim to keep more information that you don't use on your computer, you don't need a new operating system.  You can let everyone else decide what will fill your hard drive and determin for you which software you need or do not need to buy.  Eventually, while working swiss cheese, you will eventually find a mouse in one of the holes.

  • Anti-Virus for Sun Messeging server

    Dear All
I have installed the sun messaging platform with no serious problem and everything looks okay, but really I don't have any idea how to integrate it with Anti-Virus software, the sun document is not complete and also 3rd parties document is not clear, I am looking to integrate it with Clamav which is free.

    Description      Top
This article describes a month-long process that yielded a working, complete Sun Java[TM] System Messaging Server installation, including SpamAssassin and Clam-AV. Installation described includes Solaris[TM] 9 X86 and Redhat Linux AS 2.1u2 tests.
    Document Body      Top
    A Small Mail Server, step-by-step
Goal: Build a fully functional Sun Java System Messaging Server (Sun JES2), on X86 platform, with SpamAssassin and Clam-AV, all on a single system.
Goal for this document: To note all major steps, and show pitfalls overcome.
    1.
Hardware chosen: Standard PC, using an AMD 1700+ processor, ATI video board, Linksys 10/100 ethernet card. This system happened to be in my parts bin, all as separate parts. Motherboard chosen, MSI KM2M, with both video and network cards disabled.
    2.
Operating system: Both Solaris 9 X86 and Linux AS 2.1 u2 are supported for the Messaging Server chosen, and both were evaluated.
    1.
Linux installer seems more able to recognize the above hardware, and install the correct drivers. In fact, the Linux installer was happy with the built-in networking, but not able to use the built-in video capability. When the system was installed and tested, approximately 25% of the messages sent from Messaging Server to SpamAssassin resulted in tcp errors, causing spam to be delivered to mailboxes. Troubleshooting this problem appeared to be more difficult than changing OS.
    2.
Solaris 9 X86 was able to configure itself for the video card, without error, but was not able to recognize the network card. A driver for this network card was found via links given in the Sun website for reported to work network cards. I found no documentation for exactly how to make the OS aware of the network card, so after some trial and error, here is that solution:
    1.
    Install the OS, without networking.
    2.
Install the network card driver, per the documentation that comes with it, and test with the included software.
    3.
Issue the sys-unconfig command to the OS. When the system reboots, configure all network settings.
    1.
Installation of Sun JES2 is done normally, and proceeds without problems.
    2.
The version of Perl that is included with Solaris[TM] was compiled with the Sun Forte[TM] compiler, and so does not know about other compilers. When you attempt to use CPAN or a makefile.PL to compile additional software, such as SpamAssassin or any of the optional sofware needed for that, you get errors. If you do not wish to purchase a Sun/Forte compiler, you can install gcc from the Sun Free Software site, and download/compile a new Perl version with that. This is what I did.
    3.
Follow SpamAssassin documentation to install SpamAssassin. Follow Sun documentation for integration into JES Messaging Server. Test.
    4.
Download, compile and install Clam-AV virus scanner. I put the freshclam -quiet command into the configutil setting for Messaging Server, as local.schedule.freshclam. This updaes the AV database. I used every 30 minutes as an interval.
    5.
Integration of the Clam-AV is open for discussion. There are two different ways to do the integration. One way is through the documented conversion channel. This is certainly a good way, but has some drawbacks. Conversion Channel integration requires that a new process be started for each message, causing some overhead, and limiting performance. Another way is to use a third-party product, such as Amavis to communicate between SMTP and Clam-AV. I chose this second route for this installation. Install Amavis-new per documentation provided with it. We're using the amavisd daemonized version in our example. /etc/amavis.conf contains the settings for amavisd. I used port 10024 to send messages to amavisd, and 10025 to send the scanned results back to Messaging Server. I turned off amavis' ability to also call SpamAssassin, so I would not be scanning messages twice. I configured Messaging Server's inbound channels with the aliasdetourhost keyword, pointing to a new channel I created to handle Amavisd.
My imta.cnf now has these new lines:
    ! tcp_scan
    [] $E$R${tcp_scan,$L}$U%[$L]@tcp_scan-daemon
    and in section II:
    ! tcp_local
    tcp_local smtp mx single_sys subdirs 20 dequeue_removeroute maxjobs 7 pool SMTP_POOL maytlsserver allowswitchchannel saslswitchchannel tcp_auth missingrecipientpolicy 4 aliasdetourhost tcp_scan-daemon
    tcp_local-daemon
    ! tcp_scan
    tcp_scan smtp single_sys subdirs 5 notices 1 backoff "pt8h" "pt24h" dequeue_removeroute maxjobs 7 pool SMTP_POOL daemon [127.0.0.1] port 10024
    tcp_scan-daemon
    Dispatcher.cnf adds:
    [SERVICE=SMTP-SCAN]
    DEBUG=-1
    PARAMETER=CHANNEL=tcp_scan
    PORT=10025
    IMAGE=IMTA_BIN:tcp_smtp_server
    LOGFILE=IMTA_LOG:tcp_scan-server.log
    STACKSIZE=2048000
Option.dat (this is just the spamassassin stuff):
    spamfilter_config_file=/opt/SUNWmsgsr/config/spamassassin.opt spamfilter_library=/opt/SUNWmsgsr/lib/libspamass.so spamfilter_string_action=data:,require "fileinto"; fileinto "$U"
    Message flow, is now:
    1.
    Message received by MTA
    2.
    Forward a copy to SpamAssassin
    3.
    Receive a binary spam/not-spam answer.
    4.
Forward message to Amavis, for virus scanning. (through tcp_scan channel).
    5.
Receive message back from Amavis, through tcp_scan channel, for delivery to mailbox.
    6.
    Deliver message to mailbox.
This setup has been working, without error for about 5 days, so far. I've received several thousand messages, identified and removed about a dozen virus-laden messages, and over 800 spam messages. My intention is to move to production by next week. As far as I can tell, the only downside to this configuration is that the mail.log_current shows two enqueue lines and two dequeue lines for each message. We get to see the initial enqueue, the dequeue to tcp_scan, an enqueue from tcp_scan to ims-ms, and the final dequeue. This could be configured differently.

As far as I can tell. Photolop and Illustrator work fine, haven't had time to try the rest of the CS5 Suite apps.
I've ran tests on the C drive (10k rpm) and the added 1TB drives. Same results for all; lag lag lag.

  • Intel Based Motherboards for Power PC G5

Now that Apple has launched BootCamp, the program which allows an intel-based mac to run Windows, question is to those of us who bought a G5 last year will there be a motherboard upgrade to switch us over to the intel based machines once the desktop's are switched over? Or will we have to buy a whole new tower?

You are absolutely right. When I first got my Virtual PC, it got infected right away. Luckily it doesn't see the other side of the isle so none of my mac stuff was touched. I basically just deleted that Virtual PC and started over.
Of course I always wonder why people on the PC side of things put up with such nonsense. If you were truly troubled by all the viruses and trojan horses and worms you would think or actually demand that your computer company would fix it, instead you just take because you have to??? What you should do is stop buying software and machines that are prone to those problems forcing software companies to write for the other machine.
    I wonder???

  • Motherboard failure - G4 Powerbook

I have a 15" powerbook G4 which I purchased in May 2006, and last week the machine failed to boot. I took it to the local Apple Store and they tell me the motherboard was fritzed and was quoted AUD$1600 to replace it.
Interestingly, a neighbour with the same model machine - just 2 days within warranty - had his machine diagnosed with the same problem at the same Apple Store . They tried to get him to pay for the repair even though he delivered it to them BEFORE the warranty expired - it just took them 3 weeks to get to it!
I would be interested to know if anyone else has experienced a similar problem and if it is unreasonable to expect more than 12 - 18 months operation of this rather vital component.
    Thanks in advance..
    Tony

I have the very same problem. my powerbook is a little older than 2 years and so far i've been really happy with it. it was a pretty big investment for me and now i can have it fixed for around 1,500 euros. nice.
i'm really not happy about it and to be honest i rather feel let down. i got a powerbook because i love its aesthetic and easy to use qualities and because apple is not so susceptible to viruses and other such stuff. right now though i don't know if i ever wanna spend so much money on an apple product ever again if it's gonna go to bits in no time. my old pc laptop lasted me six years and if it wasn't for the memory and speed and stuff i'd still use it. it's bloody microsoft but at least the motherboard doesn't die overnight. i've searched a few forums and apparently this powerbook malfunction is quite common. how can that be???
i'm currently looking into getting a second-hand motherboard if possible and have it installed by a private person who knows their stuff. doesn't look good though.
    good luck to you! i

  • M747 Motherboard

    Hi,
Could someone please point me to any thread about this motherboard?
I can't get the forum search to work (I've opened the privacy setting and disabled anti-virus).
I'm having problems installing a new G4 MX440SE-T-PCI card. It's replacing an old voodoo2 (quite a big step!) All I'm getting is a blank screen on boot.
I have found several web sites discussing this, but they don't really give a good answer. There is an issue with the 747's built-in SIS6326 chip. The way round this is not clear.
Also, my MSI installation disc does not want to let me install any drivers - none appear on the relevant page, and windows gives an error on program exit. Do the drivers only become available once the card is in?
    My system is Intel P2 400, 200mb ram, win98se.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • VIA KM4M-V motherboard CPU speed and AGP problem

Hello. Please be patient I am not technical I would say I'm intermediate, so please if anyone is kind enough to help, please don't blind me with jargon! I have 2 problems I believe are motherboard related, I shall go thru them both. Any solutions/suggestions will be very gratefully received! Operating system is Win XP Pro SP 2 running 512 MB RAM (64 used at moment for onboard graphics)
I purchased this mother board: VIA KM4M-V. I also purchased an AMD Sempron PR2600+ which should be showing a speed of 1833 Mhz, but is coming up as 1466 MHz. Does anybody have any info please? I have downloaded and installed all the latest deivers and BIOS for the motherboard, and the MSI live monitor says there are no new updates now. Is there something in BIOS I need to change? Or is this a mistake on the manufactuers part? If so, which one? LOL
2nd problem: The onboards graphics weren't good enough for some games I had - it required an AGP card. So I have purchased an ATI Radeon 9550 256 MB AGP card. OK I installed this card. All OK starting up. installed drivers, restarted computer. Was OK then changed to 32 bit colour and change the resolution of screen. When I clicked apply went into energy saving mode. Rebooted. As soon as it went to boot into windows, the monitor went into energy saving mode. Once it didn't straight away and windows started then the screen went distorted then it went into energy saving mode. I went into safe mode uninstalled the graphics hardware booted into windows again and reinstalled looked OK then I rebooted and it did it again grrrrrrrrr I went and disabled onboard graphics (ATI said might be issue on their site) still won't boot. Something I am doing wrong? Is it the motherboard?
I'm thinking that it is both botherboard ::koff:: I mean motherboard It's OK I mean it's better than what I had, but I know it's not what it should be! I am grateful to you guys for your help. Thanks very much

More on this! I am running win xp pro sp 2 BTW. I have been swapping between the onboard graphics and the ATI radeon 9550 AGP card I just got. I have been disabling onboard graphics, then installing from scratch (all virus and programs off). As to power supply/amperes? I have no idea all I know is it's a 450 watt rating and has ummmm 230 on back (volts?) it's pretty new I got it like 5 months ago
OK I can get it sort of working when I go into the BIOS and set it from 8x to 4x. The graphics advanced setting was showing 4x. The motherboard is SUPPOSED to support 8x but it just won't work at all in that mode. It works for awhile in 4x mode. No specific amount of time I have current drivers on everything! Then the same old thing happens! Monitor goes to energy saving mode or computer restarts. On restart can use it again for a limited time again, and then the mouse pointer kinda goes funny and it freezes. It goes pixalated and if I move it this 'block' goes up and down in a line only. Most of the time has been trying to start AOL (my ISP)  it goes off then. Have tried different rates (went down to 16 bit) and desktop sizes (went down to the one above 800x600) no go. I took the refresh rates to 60, tried everything. I have taken it out again.
I don't know if it a motherboard problem, the graphics card or a combo! I just paid £54.99 for the graphics card, and don't want to waste it! What should I do. It's really frustrating!

  • Did my motherboard fry my SATA disk?

After earlier problems with a 160GB WD SATA disk which developed a very severe reading fault, I have been using the replacement with no problems for a week or two.
Today this new disk developed a similar problem - part of the disk appears to have become corrupted and cannot be read at all, rather than give an error the system just hangs.  Disk was attatched to the Promise controller with no Raid using the special WD SATA connector.
HDTach shows blocks of the disk where the sequential read rate is zero and the WD data lifeguard disk diagnostics program (v 5.04c) gives a serious error on the quick test - the "Raw Read Error Rate" was 1 compared to a threshold level of 51.
My question is can the motherboard/disk controller cause this type of damage to a disk drive or is it more likely to be a  problem with the disks?
    Thanks for any insights.

Friendly, witty, mildly sarcastic response aside - it was a good suggestion since I hadn't stated where the photo came from.
Coming back to your last but one comment - do I understand you correctly that you reckon the SATA controller is more likely to cause data corruption than unrecoverable damage to certain sectors, and that physical damage is more likely to be caused by a power surge or short circuit?  This is something I know nothing about, but my gut reaction would suggest that a power surge or short circuit is more likely to completely wreck a disk than just certain sectors (possibly caused by a head crash?)?
Thanks for all your input on this one - as I said this is well beyond my area of knowledge.  Software I know well, low level hardware is do not!

  • Motherboard Replacement Issue

I just replaced a motherboard on a Pavilion p6774y desktop and put everything back together and booted up  the computer then it told me that windows  failed to start up due to a change in the hardware, check for viruses and or reinstall windows, but then  I did a back up my files on dvd then  did a  recovery from my hard drive  and restored it to factory settings. After that  it re-booted on its own then Windows started but when  clicked on the icon HP Support Assistant, it came up stating that it is a p6221c. I looked up this particular model and the only thing these 2 models have in common is that they both are 785G chipset. My original motherboard is a N-Alvorix rs880 with Phenom II 4x 840T Processor and the p6221c is an H-Alvorix rs880 with Phenom II 4x 830 Processor . Does that matter? My computer is working but not with the original settings and software it came with when I bought it.  I ordered a complete set of recovery disks , will that restore my computer  to the way it was when I bought it? or what should I do?

You said (1) "........then  did a  recovery from my hard drive  and restored it to factory settings ".
The original hard drive contains a Recovery partition for the HP p6774y.  That process would not re-install the OS to the HP p6621c motherboard, as the HP Tattooo embedded in the BIOS chip would "fault". The process should stop.
You said (2) " I ordered a complete set of recovery disks".   I would ask for what computer? p6774y or p6621c
What is now present is a new computer, lacking valid activation.  As an afterthought, both a Recovery partition and a Recovery DVD set create a computer with the same software. This software is the same as it would be for a "out of the box new computer'.

  • Motherboard/ram issues

    hey everybody
here's what i got and here's the problem
just bought a winchester amd athlon 64 3500+ socket 939 cpu
    and MSI k8T Neo2 board
now . i have had 2 PC2700 512 MB generic ram sticks from before
everything works fine except that the ram is detected only as 512MB in windows XP
so... i tried to test the ram by removing each one .. tricky thing is .. now it desplayed 256 megs of ram.. so its reading the sticks at half.  there are 2 banks in eachs slots
2 green 2 purple... i have both sticks in the green slots.. i figured if i put one in the purple slot, it will read the whole ramstick... but it wont boot AT all when anything is in the purple slots.
this however, is a common problem i guess, has to do with motherboard bios or something.. so next thing on the list ... we have to re-flash MOBO
i dont know why, but my computer isnt reading the disk drive.. tried 2 different floppy drives .. and nothing works .. so i thought id make a CDrom boot disk with Nero.. i put floppy emulation, as that is the only way i can seem to get it to boot from cdrom..
everything was fine.. however .. when i tried to flash ...  by typing in exactly what they said .. like "flashutil ( i have AMI bios)  " it would give me a list of options but id be back at the dosprompt .. if i tried to  type in the flashutil romname /option .. same thing .. would display the options in a /? dos manner but no flashing of rom
i was thinking about doing liveupdate and do a windows Flash..but i read somewhere that thats not a good thing because it might mess up the flash completely...
any ideas on why the ram wouldnt be read correctly ?  or how to flash the bios ?
    thanks for any input

    Hi
The live update DOS flash is OK, you make a floppy, with the bios on it, along with alll the other files needed. Disable the boot virus protection in bios, reboot with floppy in A:> it then loads freedos, you get a couple of prompts, then it erases bios and reloads new one ( that bit takes about 10 secs), make sure power supply is OK, and nothing is going to interupt the PC.
There is a utility in program files - MSI - Utilities, which is the flash prog, it will ask where the bios is,and then flash it. AGAIN make sure boot virus protection is disabled.
Your using the Neo2, so I am not sure if MEM has been updated in bios, but likely to have been.
    cheers
