Virus on my mac and network

Hi -
I'm a long time Mac user (currently using MacBook Air) but not so tech suvvy and unfortunately, so as my husband who is non Mac user.
My husband has this Dell laptop and had some issue with his computer and had paid for the help support from one of the MS certified technitians. Recently, this technitian guy called my husband and told him that his paid support service is just about to expire and encouraged him to renew the service. Before my husband decide to renew this contract, he told this guy to check his computer. And he found that my hubby's computer got viruses (of course, he has virus protection software from well-known company installed on his computer...). This is okay, I get that... BUT the technitian guy ran the diagnosis and found out that our home network also got viruse! and thru that network my Mac also got virus, he says.
As far as I know, my Mac runs fine. I know, basically, we don't really need to install any virus protection s/w on Mac unless you really want to. And I'm very caucious, so I don't download any suspecious things or don't access to any suspecious website, too. So it's really hard for me to believe what this guy says. SO, here's what I really want to do; Is there any way to check if I really have any virus on my Mac other than just to see anything acts funny? Another question, how can I check, if our network (only my husband computer and my Mac are connected to this network) is really infected by any virus? And more importantly, if they are inected, is there any way to fix it?
I really don't know, if this MS certified tech guy is telling me the truth or just lip sink (or even a lie!?) to make my husband to renew his service... My husband expects me to make a decision but with my limited knowledge (which unfortunately, more than what my husband knows... ah...). And moreover, I'm stunned by the fact (or totally lie) that my Mac has virus!!! Need your experts help!!!

BUT the technitian guy ran the diagnosis and found out that our home network also got viruse! and thru that network my Mac also got virus, he says.
He 'didnt tell the truth'. Ask him to name that virus.
Currently there are no genuine Mac virus' out in the wild woods of the net
Install ClamXaV for that "in case the sky falls and pigs fly" occurance.
ClamAV is currently tested daily in comparative tests against other antivirus products on Shadowserver. In 2011, Shadowserver tested over 25 million samples against ClamAV and numerous other antivirus products. Out of the 25 million samples tested.

  • I've got OSX/Genieo.A virus on my mac and don't know how to get rid of it and why I have it

I've got OSX/Genieo.A virus on my mac and don't know how to get rid of it and w I have it

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You installed the "Genieo" malware. The product is a fraud, and the developer knowingly distributes an uninstaller that doesn't work. I suggest the procedure below to disable Genieo. This procedure may leave a few small files behind, but it will permanently deactivate the malware (as long as you never reinstall it.)
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Frameworks/GenieoExtra.framework
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
    from the contextual menu.
If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder should open with an item named "GenieoExtra.framework" selected. Move that item to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password.
Move each of these items to the Trash in the same way:
    /Applications/Genieo.app
    /Applications/Reset Search.app
    /Applications/Uninstall Genieo.app
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.engine.plist
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client.plist
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client
    /usr/lib/libgenkit.dylib
    /usr/lib/libgenkitsa.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckit.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckitsa.dylib
    ~/Library/Application Support/com.genieoinnovation.Installer
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.download.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those listed above, move them as well. Some of these items will be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
Restart and empty the Trash. Don't try to empty the Trash until you have restarted.
    Step 2
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including ones called "Genieo" or "Omnibar," and any that have the word "Spigot" or "InstallMac" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Your web browser(s) should now be working, and you should be able to reset the home page and search engine. If not, stop here and post your results.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install this trojan. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad has a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If youever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that this Internet criminal has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
Finally, be forewarned that when Genieo is mentioned on this site, the attacker sometimes shows up under the name "Genieo support." He will tell you to run a fake "uninstaller." As he intends, the uninstaller does not completely remove the malware, and is in fact malware itself.

  • InDesign CS6 (Mac) and network connections

Of all the Mac apps I've used over the years, why is InDesign the only application that can't make it through a network connection issue without crashing?
For example, when I switch from Wifi to Ethernet, it crashes; even Microsoft apps can handle the change, and that's saying a lot.
Is there anything I should be looking at to try and remedy this situation? (Hint: Telling me that the solution is to quit InDesign before changing my connection is not a solution.)

    Ask in the ID forum.

  • OK to have separate virus progams in Mac and in Windows?

I am advised to have virus protection in the Windows XP program I have just installed in Parallels. I already have McAfee Virus Scan on my Mac. Is it okay to load in the McAfee Virus Scan software for Windows into Windows? I saw a warning about having two virus programs operating on the same computer, and just want to make sure this will not be a problem. Thanks

    Hi Barbara,
Since the Windows version of McAffe Scan will only scan inside your Parallels Windows and not the OSX side, it is safe to do what you do/have.
Besides quite a lot are using two or more Virus Scanner with their Windows as long as only one is running as 'On-Access Scanner' and the others are used as 'On-Demand Scanner'.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Virus on my mac and can't use safari

Surfing the net I came got an alert saying I should call a certain number to get rid of a serious virus.  So now I can't use safari.  One solution here was to go to preferences and disable Java Script, but I can't use preferences.  It is not highlighted.

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, close Safari, and then launch it with the Shift key held down. If that doesn't work, temporarily disconnect the computer from the Internet.

  • 20th Anniversary Mac and Networking

I have a 20th Anniversary Mac running OS 7.6.1. Our internal network is based on Windows 2003 servers. How can I get the 20th Mac on the internet? I have a NIC card installed. I have tried letting it use DHCP, manually setting the IP, etc., but nothing seems to work.
    Any ideas?

  • Can windows computers get viruses from a mac on the same network?

    Hi,
I am using a Powerbook G4 powerPC running OSX 10.3. My current employers think that my computer is giving their system viruses by being hooked up to their network. The network is all windows, and I can't actually see their computers on the network. All I can do is connect to the internet.
As is my understanding, which could be wrong, a) there are virtually no viruss for Apple computers, b) any virus for an apple computer cannot effect a Windows computer, and c) Mac computers do not act as carriers for viruses written for Windows, and as long as I'm not downloading anything I shouldn't (which I don't, virtually every file on my computer either came with the installation disk or was created on my computer). Is there any way I can actually be giving them viruses that would effect a windows machine? And if so, is there any way to protect against that?

The only way you can be giving coworkers a virus from your Mac is if you forward one to them in an email. Well, either that are directly copying it to their PC. For you topic questions:
    a) Actually, there are none. At least not yet. A few Trojans, but no viruses.
    b) Correct. Wrong machine code. They wouldn't run even if you did send them an older virus (one of a couple dozen Mac viruses from OS 9 and earlier)
    c) Not as you describe. But you can be a carrier via email. Even there, you have to accidentally or knowingly send it to them. A Windows virus cannot self propagate from your Mac as it can in Windows.
This all assuming your are using your Mac only as a Mac and not running Windows through Virtual PC or in some other way. If you are, then the Windows environment will be every bit as vulnerable as it would be on typical PC hardware.

  • HT4796 Migration assistant is telling me that it has lost connection with my Mac and to ensure they are on the same network.  They are, and an ethernet cable is plugged into them.  What do i do?

Migration Assistant has been running since yesterday evening.  My Dell is now telling me that its trying to reconnect to my Mac and to ensure they are both using the same network.  I have an Ethernet cable plugged in them and they are both on the same WiFi.  What can I do?

    Hello Wyodor,
thanks for your reply on my question.
You are wright the index file is 308 KB.
And offcourse that I delete my files and documents is not an Iweb problem, but because my English is not that good, that I thougt I try to tell the whole story, and hope people can read trough the lines.
Why I didn't use Iweb to upload to the server is because the server company recommanded to use file zilla. And I am a nobody with this kind of things, so I did exactly what they tell me to do.
No, i did not make a backup of Iweb and the domain file, but reading other messages on this forum showed me that I can maybe try to make empty the cashfile (?)
and otherwise I have bad luck and have to make my website again. Offcourse I have a lot of examples from all the pages (copied from the local map to my USB stick) and my website is aprox. 15 Mb, (not so big) so it will cost me a few nigths.
But I'm still hoping on a miracle :-)
    greetings Lasource

  • How do i create a little network with my i-mac and macbook

how do i create a little network with my i-mac and macbook

    Hello:
To give a sensible answer, a little more information is needed.
I am guessing that you want to set up a wireless network as you have both a desktop and laptop.
There are some pretty good tutorials/articles in the knowledge base articles.

There is something incompatible would be my guess. Did you disconnect all your peripherals in safe mode just to check?
You might now create a new temporary user account. Log into the new account. Do the panics still occur?
I would also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Sometimes they can be difficult to track down. Looking at each new panic log would help determine if it's cause is associated with the same extensions.

The password used to log in to a user account remotely is the same as you would use to log into it locally. You can also use your Apple ID, so try that.
To change your login password read OS X Mavericks: Reset a login password

  • HT4796 Are there other things that need to be done for the Mac and the PC to link up.  Mine are on the same network.  I have enabled sharing.  The PC does see the Mac in its network but they just won't link up.

I am trying to migrate my iTunes information from my PC to my Mac.  I have installed the migration software required on the PC.  The problem is that the Mac and the PC never link up even though from the PC I can see and access the Mac in it's network neighborhood.

  • I have 2 macs and 2 PC laptops in my home wireless network.  Can I use the Airport/Time Capsule hard drive to back up all 4 machines?  I know that I will have to use different back up software on the PCs, but is it possible over the wireless network?

I have 2 macs and 2 PC (Windows 7) laptops in my home wireless network. (The iMac is hardwired via ethernet to the Airport/Time Capsule; the others are wireless connections using Airport).  I want to use the hard disk drive in the Time Capsule as a network backup drive for all 4 computers.  Is this possible?  Could someone help me by telling me how to configure it?  I know I will have to use different backup software in the 2 Windows 7 Laptops?  Do I need to use the Windows backup software, or can I use a third party program like Acronis True Image?  Thanks in advance for the help

It is your fault, pondini.. all your fault.
I read of all the things that go wrong restoring Time Machine backups.. particularly stupid things like mail, photo libraries don't go back.. etc. And looking through the incredible number of issues people have here, when their Mac finally takes a dive how hard it is to restore.
I restored a test hard disk from a TC.. and it takes ages and ages to even make up its mind to start.
I worked in computer support for ages, but not Macs.. so my experience is ghost.. ghost images.. on large commercial server setups, can stream restore to multiple computers at once.. even doing it computer by computer the image is simple as network boot to restore. But ghost went the way of Symantec.. sigh!! And was destroyed.
A product like clonezilla, Free linux boot cd.
    http://lifehacker.com/5078397/clonezilla-backs-up-and-restores-your-disks
Can backup a Hard disk in just about any format.. yet to try it on a Mac to a TC.. but I will. Boot from CD.. instead of your lost Lion partition which no longer exists (because the hard drive had to be replaced) and the DVD they no longer give you, and restore the entire hard disk in a couple of hours .. to the exact image at the point you made the clone.. in any format, with any partitions.
My bet is that it will kill TM .. but you could be right.
It is just the prospect of all those permission changes, photos and mail libraries etc that worry me.

got a new wireless connection for my mac and cannot figure out how to delete the last connection service I had. Everytime I shut the computer, the network goes back to the other one. I cannot find the file ANYWHERE

Under Network Preferences, select the WiFi
    click on "Advanced..." button
Select the network you want to delete from the list and click on "-"
    Click "Ok"
    Click "Apply"
    Well done ;-)
You may also want to delete the wireless key from Keychain.
Open Keychain, seach for the old wifi network name, slect it and click delete

  • How do I create a shared network drive between a remote Mac and a remote PC?

I have read blog after blog to try to find a simple solution to my problem, with no luck.
I have two computers. 1 is a Macbook Pro Retina with paralelled-Window 7 access. The other is a Windows 7 PC. The two computers are remote. ie one is on a home network in 1 state, the other is on a home network in another state.
The PC is running a software program that has a large data file with sensitive material. I want my Mac to be able to share this data file. I am told I need to set up a network connection between the two. I have tried doing a Microsoft VPN connection through the paralleled-Windows 7 mac and the Windows 7 PC. I am setting up the network to have the PC act as the server, thereby creating a network connection directly to the PC's IP address. I receive several different errors for the network tunneling when trying to connect. I believe this is because both computers are running on home networks, rather than one running on a secured work network. I read every blog out there about resolving these error messages I get, but again no luck.
Is there an easier way to resolve my problem? Can the data file be stored on some sort of cloud server that would allow constant updating. For instance, we may both be in the software at the exact same time on our remote computers, but we need whatever I save on my mac to be accessible immediately to the PC.
If anyone has any VPN software suggestions, cloud storage suggestions, or input on the method I have already tried, please help!
    Thank you!

I don't know if this will work for you or not but you might want to consider something like TeamViewer. Its a great program that can not only be used to remote control any pc or mac but you can also transfer files as well. Here is the link for more information.
    http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx
Of course someone will have to be at the site to install it the first time and then it can be used remotely.
