Virus & other bad things

Hope this an appropriate place for this question. Is my Mac susceptible using BC/Win XP to all those bad things out there? If so what is the best/good protection application?

The free Windows Security Essential also gets high marks and of course well supported and integrated.
During RC I used Norton 360 but didn't feel it was worth it (I own NIS2009 etc too but needed something I felt during the 8 months public beta). MSE really seems to be all that's needed and rated 98%.

  • Is leaving my MBP plugged into mains a bad thing?

Is there an FAQ on this kind of stuff anywhere? I bet my questions are very common.
1 - Is leaving my MBP plugged into mains power a bad thing? Someone told me today that it's bad for the battery. I've had the thing about 6 weeks now, yet I've only gone through 5 cycles.
2 - I've not yet run the battery completely down at all. Is that good/bad/doesn't matter?
3- Is allowing the machine to completely drain itself of power (till it conks out) at all likely to damage it?
4 - What's all this about battery calibrating?
    As I say, if there's a FAQ...
    Cheers!

By and large, laptop batteries today are maintenance free. Just charge them when needed and don't spend a lot of time worrying about it. Some people seem absolutely **** bent on finding something they can fret over with their laptops instead of just enjoying using them. Learn from their example, and don't allow yourself to fall into that same trap.

  • Good and bad things about Bridge CS6 Beta

The good thing first: No memory leaks anymore. No crashing, no freezing, no write errors when running Bridge scripts on large numbers of image files. Ah—what a relief!
In comparison this this, the bad things are just trifles. First—when selecting the exposure data to show up under each thumbnail then the aperture number will get rounded down to the nearest integer. So, for example, apertures of f/1.4, f/1.7, f/2, f/2.8, f/3.5, f/5.6, f/6.3, f/6.7 will get presented as 1.0, 1.0, 2.0, 2.0, 3.0, 5.0, 6.0, 6.0, respectively. In the EXIF data, the aperture numbers are correct, and Camera Raw 7.0 will display the correct numbers. Second—when starting Bridge CS6 or Photoshop CS6 then the monitor will get switched off for a brief moment. The screen goes completely black for two seconds or so, then returns as if it was in stand-by mode. It's nothing severe but very annoying.
Windows XP (32 bit) SP3; CPU Athlon Dual-Core 64 X2 6000+; RAM 4 GB installed, 3 GB used; graphic card AMD Radeon HD 2600 Pro (AMD Catalyst Display Driver from March 2012 installed); monitor Dell Ultra-Sharp 2407WFP-HC (24", 1920×1200 px) connected via DVI, no second monitor.

    What camera produced the files?
Doesn't matter. I have files from two different cameras, Sony A900 and Leica M9, all shot in both JPEG and raw format (ARW for the Sony; DNG 1.0 for the Leica). The issue occurs with the thumbnails of both the JPEG and raw files. For the very same files, the issue is not there in Bridge CS5.

Well ... the previous version of the display driver actually was the latest, at the time of installing CS6 Beta. The current driver version came out only two days ago.

I'm reading way to many bad things about the new Lion... is it worth the upgrade and hassle or will this push me back to Google for e-mail, calendars and contacts? I love my Mobile.Me... Why change whats working for an OS thats not working ?

The more you read these forums the more you'd mistakenly think that Lion is generally a problem.
For every person who comes here with a problem there's many thousands who are running Lion hassle-free, including me.
I've used MobileMe since the beginning and have happily moved to iCloud, There's a couple of things you may miss from MobileMe in the short term but those things like iWeb hosting are going away anyway in June.
I suggest you join the millions of Happy Lion Users. Just back up your data in case you absolutely need to do a clean install back to Snow Leopard.

  • Every time i update, bad things happen

If I allow firefox to update - bad things happen. Last was yesterday when I could not access any website for more than 2-3 seconds - finally had to restore system.- previous time could not access yahoo, etc.

Thank you to all that gave advice, none of the suggestions worked I'm afraid........ but I did find a solution to the problem, by accident......... Doing a normal sync still does not work...... So what I have done is, limited each file to just 1000 photos, and have ended up with 32 files now........... I have ticked the boxes     "Sync photo's from, selected files" and I sync with the first file ticked, then sync again with the second ticked, and so on, I know its long winded but they are now all on my ipod

  • Bad things/Disadvantages of Belle

Can anyone list out or tell me what are the bad things about Belle?
It's so hard to find out the details...

These are what I have so far:
    1. There is always an icon on the top bar indicating "a network service opening or closing" or "network service on hold". I have tried battery pull trick but that doesn't help.  A hard reset is needed?
    2.  Wifi filter is not available so everytime you scan, it shows everything that is in the air.  I'd rather like to have it just show those I want it to show
    3.  Previously we can set Wifi scanning to off but still get connected to Wifi when we start an app.  Now it seems that wifi would need to be on.  Would this be a drain on the batt.  Also we cannot set the interval when wifi is scanned
    4.  There is no "set widgets to offline mode" setting.  Need to set mobile data off to achieve same
    5.  Can only see sms messages in conversation form.  I would like to see it as an inbox which Anna had an option to do so
Mine is an E-7.  Anyone has any solution to the above?

Otherwise, Screen Sharing, or a VNC client/server, or TeameViewer.com, or LogMeIn.com might be better, and less expensive.
ARD is intended for managing a classroom or office full of Macs. It is overkill for remotely accessing a remote Mac or two.

I currently have Snow Leopard and am thinking of upgrading to Lion but have heard some bad things about it.  Should I upgrade or not? What do you like/dislike about Lion?

It is indeed all down to what you need to do with your machine.   Snow leopard is an excellent OS and as Baltwo suggests you have to check out your current apps and programs because PPC won't work on any higher OS than the one you have.
Andy's comment is very interesting and, I suspect, insider knowledge based     Certainly I would wait for Mavericks now it is on the horizon ... and then add six months or so for the bugs to be ironed out.
Good luck, whatever you do.   I'm staying with Snow Leopard.

  • Danger of Bad Things

I wonder if Edge Animate or Possibly Flash could help me to accomplish the following task which was put to me by a colleague at the University I work at. The following text is taken from his email to me...
I’m trying to create a little web based gizmo to illustrate epidemiology and public health concepts for undergrads and wondering if you can help.
The idea is to compare the effects of two different approaches to health risk. One approach is to try to reduce exposure to Bad Thing #1 which is known to kill 50% of all people who continue to be exposed to it over their lifetime. The other is to try to get those exposed to Bad Thing #1 to switch to Bad Thing #2 (mortality known to be lower, but not clear how much lower). The twist is that the health community is worried that people not already exposed to Bad Thing #1, will expose themselves to Bad Thing #2 if it becomes available (thus raising overall health risk).
    So here’s what I want to do…
Step one: illustrate the danger of Bad Thing #1 based on the proportion of the population exposed and the mortality risk. This part should be easy.
I want students to input two numbers:
What is the size of the adult population of your country/region (age 12 and over)? ___ [user input here]
What is the proportion of that population currently exposed to Bad Thing #1? ___ [user input here]
The result of the calculation would produce a circle that represents the expected mortality from exposure to Bad Thing #1. The size of the circle could be fixed (that is, it doesn't need to be based on the user input – it just needs to be a circle that can be changed in size based on subsequent user input).
OK, so now the student is staring at a circle. It would be nice if the circle contained the number of expected deaths, but that’s not essential, it just represents the number of expected deaths (population * exposure * .5).
Now, I want the students to answer three questions.
First, I want them to estimate how much less risky/safer Bad Thing #2 is than Bad Thing #1. If we assume #2 can’t be any more harmful than #1, this scale should range from 0% safer to 100% safer (perhaps in 5% increments if it can’t be more exact).
Second, I want them to estimate what percentage of people currently exposed to Bad Thing #1 could be convinced to switch to exposing themselves to Bad Thing #2 instead (i.e., stop exposure to #1 entirely, but fully expose themselves to #2). Based on this estimate, I want to show how much smaller the circle would be (number of expected deaths) if said percentage of #1 people switched to #2. When they enter this number (or push a slider), I want them to see the circle shrink (or a comparison circle shrink – I dunno).
Finally, I want them to estimate what percentage of the population who are not currently exposed to Bad Thing #1, might somehow find themselves exposed to Bad Thing #2. But this needs to be based on the proportion of the remaining adult population from the initial calculation at step 2 above (i.e., those not exposed to Bad Thing #1).
Now I want the circle to grow as they increase their estimate, but of course it has to be constrained by the size of the previously unexposed population and the risk of Bad Thing #2.
At the moment, I’m flummoxed about how to pull this off visually for the students.
For example, let’s imagine we have Drug A and 20% of the adult population is using it with a 50% mortality rate. If the student inputs “30,000,000” for the population and 20% for Drug A use, we get a circle representing 6,000,000 users of Drug A. If we know that Drug A has a 50% mortality rate, we get a circle representing 3,000,000 dead people.
If students then says that Drug B is 50% safer than Drug A, then we know that we can expect 30,000,000 * .2 * .5 *.5 = 1,500,000 deaths.
Showing a circle that shrinks from 3,000,000 to 1,500,000 is nice. Having a slider that illustrates how death rates change as risk increases/decreases is nice. Maybe I could figure out how to do that, but I’m old and the dementia is creeping…
But the hard part is figuring out how to include death rates if Drug B starts being used by people who don’t already take Drug A.
If 80% of non-Drug A using people start taking Drug B which we think is 50% safer (.25 mortality rate), then how many additional deaths should we expect?
At some combination of Drug A users switching to Drug B, and Drug B being __% safer to use and non-Drug A users taking up Drug B, we might end up with the same number of deaths. That’s the point I’m trying to illustrate.
Does that make sense? Is it possible to implement using a web interface – especially one that includes sliding scales and growing / shrinking circles?

I have use raphael.js to show graphs.
I have also used simple math to calculate the growth of a bar too.
I suppose if you can figure out the math, then you can create symbol that will show this math.

Jim, I agree with lots of your issues. I'll add two myself below. But for the Chapter Marker...I'm pretty sure I was able to go into Keyboard Shortcuts and type "Chapter" and chapter marker came up. I set it to the letter E for Encore and ignored the previous E shortcut, but you could do anything. Now it adds a chapter marker with one click. See if this works for you.
My main two issues so far with Premiere Pro CC (I used it only for one full day but then had to leave and go back to CS6 due to issue #1):
    1) The Multicam Bug. I'd elaborate but there's a whole thread to describe just how bad this bug is:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1236698?start=40&tstart=0
    2) Appearance Issue: If you switch appearance to "Light Background" Premiere no longer adjusts other colors making some things disappear or be very hard to see. You basically can't see your in to out points! In CS6, working with the light background was just as optimized as the dark background. For example, with PPro CC, if you mark an in/out point on the source monitor or timeline it's light in color. Switch to light background and that color stays light and disappears into the background so you almost can't see it. In Premiere CS6 that in to out point turned light blue so you could still see it. Also, selected clips in the timeline are white and sort of blend in with the now light background. Dark background looks cool, but it can be hard on the eyes so I'd hope Adobe fixes some of these appearance issues so the light background is actually usable.
There's lots to like for sure, and I'm sure I'll have more for this list...but this was my "first impression".

    Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
     Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.

  • Loss of color labels and other assorted bad things...

My G5 seems to be acting a little weird lately- nothing I can pin down but lots of little things.
    • Beachballs spinning at odd times and places.
    • If I have assigned a color label to a TextEdit document, all of a sudden resaving the document causes the color label to reset to "no color". This seems to be a new trick, and I'll bet nothing good will come of that.
    • When opening some (but not all) graphic files with GraphicConverter, all of a sudden a "ghost image" of the picture paints itself on my right screen (of a two-screen setup). The actual GraphicConverter window itself is located on the left screen real estate, which is where I want it, but this "ghost image", without any framing, appears right in the middle of the right screen just after the normal GraphicConverter window opens on the left screen. Suspiciously, the size of the "ghost image" seems to be the same size as the actual legitimate image showing in the GraphicConverter window. I have my screen set to change the background picture every minute or so, and when it repaints the "ghost image" disappears. Moving any other window over the "ghost image" also erases it (like using a blackboard eraser).
Just to make this REALLY challenging, this problem seems to be inconsistent, as it does not do this every time. If there is a pattern here, I'm missing it.
So far (I think, but can't be sure) all of the graphics which fall victim to this phenomena have been scans by my Cannon scanner. Have had this scanner for a long time with no previous problems. If I open the same files which cause GraphicConverter to misbehave with other graphics-handling apps, there doesn't seem to be any problem with the other apps.
    Some general background info:
    • Have reinstalled the GraphicConverter app, and discarded it's preference files, but no help.
    • Have also reinstalled the Cannon driver app, and discarded it's preference files, but again no help.
    • If I boot the computer from a different (backup) external HD the same situation seems to exist. However, since I backup pretty often (using SuperDuper), if there is some sort of OS issue which has been building up it may be possible that the backup HD now simply has the same problem as the main internal HD.
    • I did rebuild my directories with DiscWarrior a few weeks ago, for what that's worth. Have done that in the past with no problems occurring.
    • The main internal HD is a fast 10000 rpm, and is partitioned into two sections: one section holds all of the OSX-10.4.10 and related operating files (apps, utilities, libraries and associated hooga-booga), with about 9.2gb still open. The other partition holds everything else, also with about 9.2gb still open. Three separate external HDs hold pretty much nothing but music files for iTunes.
    All ideas will be appreciated!
    Thanks- 0db
