Hello, I keep getting a popup window that asks me if I want to allow a file called installer underscore adobe underscore flash underscore player underscore English dot exe. It is from downloadv dot freesoftstore dot com. AVG catches it every time and eliminates the virus threat, but this window keeps popping up every few seconds. I have deleted my cookies and temporary internet files. How can I make this go away? I use Adobe Flash Player. Thank you in advance to anyone who can help.

Because Flash Player is installed on 1.2 billion machines, it is a popular choice for malware looking to disguise itself as something legitimate. Beyond being the target of impersonation, there's really nothing here related to Flash Player.
Because the process is already being launched by something running on your system, it sounds like you have an active malware infection. You can try to use commercially-available anti-virus/anti-malware tools to clean up the infection, or you can take the salted earth approach and just re-image the machine. In my personal opinion, starting from scratch is the best approach. As USB keys are common vectors for transmitting viruses, you might want to steer clear of them for backing up and restoring any data you have that you might want to back up first. There are a number of good online backup providers like CrashPlan, and cloud storage providers like Dropbox and Google Drive that will let you stash important documents and stuff.

I just noticed that you posted this in the windows software community. If you are running windows also from a partition, then I would think you would have a windows av program. I don't know much about those. I am pretty sure though that a mpkg application is for macs, so the Apple directions should be what you need. If not, someone with more experience will have to help.

Anti-virus problem I think

My friend downloaded Kaspersky Anti-Virus and we had no problem - today when I turned on my computer it there was a window that said to download a more current Mc Afee - so I did - now the computer doesn't work. My laptop works so I know it isn't the modem. What to do????

When Kaspersky was installed, did you uninstall McAfee? It's never a good idea to run two Anti-virus programs along side each other as more often than not, they tend to conflict with each other and cause some pretty interesting issues with the operating system.
When you first turn on your PC, press F8 until you get a menu asking you how you wish to boot Windows. This menu can be accessed before you get the Windows logo or the "Windows is Starting Up" screen. Boot the system into Safe Mode, choosing that option with your Arrow Keys and the Enter button and from there once the PC starts up, go to your Control Panel, and locate Add/Remove Programs (also called Remove Programs in Windows Vista and Windows 7). From this point, either uninstall Kaspersky or McAfee, whichever you do not want to use and then reboot the system. See if it will boot and log in normally.
Failing that, return to Safe Mode and try using System Restore to restore the system to a date a day or two before the problem occurred. System Restore can be reached by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore or if you are running Windows Vista/7, by searching System Restore in the Search Bar inside of the Start Menu.
I'd normally be a person who can fix issues such as these in person or remotely, however failing the above I would suggest taking the PC to a local computer geek or computer shop to see if they can get the machine started again. If not, at least have them back up your data so that the operating system may be reinstalled. This is of course a last ditch effort should all else fail.

You're going to have to be more specific about the symptoms you're seeing. At the moment, I really have almost no idea at all what's going on. Also, be aware that upgrading your Mac to Yosemite has no effect whatsoever on your iPads.

Security/virus problem?

I've been asked to explain why the following is not a security issue with JWS:
1. A user installs an application from a trustable source which uses some native libraries.
2. The web-site hosting the application is hacked and viruses are uploaded.
3. The user gets automatically(?) upgraded, without any questions being asked the next time he launches, and now he's got the virus. There is no(obvious?) way to turn off automatic updates.
So far I've only got one feeble explanation why this isn't a problem:
The hacker won't have access to the certificate. (Then again, apps are frequently using test certificates...).

I've been watching a couple of betatesters and not one could tell me what he just clicked "yes" on when he was presented with the requester telling him he was about to install an app using native resources which only had a test certificate.
This requester reminds them of Microsofts driver requester which tells them not to install a video driver. They can choose between an outdated signed video driver from Microsoft or an unsigned driver from the video card vendor that gets the job done.
I recently convinced my customer to use Java instead of Visual Basic. His brain hurts when I explain certificates, Java Web Start installer, JRE versions, native compilation, large download sizes, etc. Lots of new concepts and sharp edges. :-) (Java is a good solution for them since they need to support multiple platforms).
I wonder ... does Windows stop non-administrators from installing Java apps that use native libraries?
Running Windows without administrator rights is a pain. Most Windows programmers don't have a very significant grasp of security issues(yours included).
Under Linux/Unix it is much more built into the fabric and conciousness of the user as it is necessary to log on as a superuser as soon as you are trying to do something that could possibly harm yourself or the computer(such as changing the resolution of the screen).

Mouse button 4 conflict or virus problem horrifying me.

I have a mouse button 4 problem which occurred a week ago on my first Imac which I returned to the Apple Store for another Imac. However the same thing happened on the second Imac where everything including the USB extension cable was completely replaced and absolute no parts of the computers were the same. The problem happened on the two different Imacs where in the first case on the first computer expose which was assigned to the Mouse button 4 kept turning on and off by itself as I merely rolled the mouse back and forth and where in the second case on the second computer dashboard which was assigned to the Mouse button 4 kept turning on and off by itself as I again rolled the mouse back and forth. In both cases, in completely different computers, fluky things started to happen, all beginning with the same Mouse button 4 and the function assigned to it.
Today, a week later, it happened again but did not start a cycle once I clicked the Mouse button 4 again. In the other two cases, the continued appearance and disappearance of the Mouse button 4 function apparently caused the mouse to become so confused and crazy that merely by pointing at a menu item like File or Edit or View, the drop down menus came down all by themselves without pressing the left side of the mouse! In both computers, first with expose turning on and off and then with dashboard doing the same, it became very difficult to carry out the technician's instructions to click the blue apple, click system preferences, go to mouse and keyboard, etc.
I informed the technician at Apple Procare when this happened on the second new computer that the left and right mouse buttons seemed to be self-actuating and clicking by themselves without me touching them. He had me shut down the computer, unplug all wires from the USB ports including the power cord and hold down four keys at the same time while rebooting to reassign the devices to the USB card ports presumably.
The genius at the apple store told me that there was never anything wrong with either my first or second Imac and that there was some other factor responsible for the strange goings on like my two peripherals a Canon N676U scanner or my new HP laserJet 1022 printer in the way of a conflict with the mouse control especially most notably mouse button 4 actuating without pressing it at its own whim!
Up till the time that I talked to the genius, I had theories of my own. I did a virus check with two separate trial versions of anti-virus software for Mac, I erased and installed Tiger in each computer after each identical occurrence and finally even erased and installed Leopard which I bought. My theory was that my backup disks from my PC were hosting a Mac virus which I may have caught on my backup disks because a friend of mine with a Mac goes all over the web into dangerous and exotic sites. She once gave me a Trojan virus in a download of some music which apparently was hosted on her Mac and transferred over with the download of music as a strange setup.exe file.
I used the antivirus to scan all my backup disks from my PC which I introduced into both my first and second Imac. No infections.
I changed the USB extension cable, not trusting the one I got from the apple store nor did I trust the replacement one I got from them with the new machine. I used a Radio Shack cord instead which fits more snuggly.
I called Hewlett-Packaged and Canon to find out if there were any known issues of conflict between control of the mouse and the drivers of either my printer or scanner.
It seems like in both computers only the mouse button 4 was affected and by my turning it on and off, on and off, on and off, the USB card lost control of the other buttons of the mouse so that the technician had to reset each of the computers during their separate occurrences of the same exact "bug".
I went into safe mode but I don't know what that proved by shutting off the drivers of the printer and scanner. Right now I have the scanner driver and printer driver totally uninstalled and am monitoring the IMac for the odd behavior without the peripherals attached. What I don't know is if the problem if there is some conflict between my printer driver or scanner driver and the Mouse is confined to the Mouse button 4 which constipates the rest of the button by turning on and off repeatedly while rolling the mouse back and forth...or if the conflict if that is the problem really affects more buttons than just the mouse button 4 where Mouse button is the most obvious sign because it starts up expose or Dashboard (which ever program is assigned to it in the mouse and keyboard settings).
If there really is any important conflicts, if they are confined to mouse button 4, should I merely turn off that button in mouse and keyboard settings in system preferences and run dashboard and the nifty widgets from the taskbar or from mouse button 3 even, and disable the crazy mouse button 4. This will only work if the conflict or whatever it is, is confined to only mouse button 4.
I don't know yet whether the constant actuation of Mouse button 4 clogs up the use of the other buttons which apparently become self-actuating with a mind of their own, or whether the possible so-called conflict if it exists and is the cause is really affecting more than one button. What supports my belief that it is a one button problem is that I substituted a logitech mouse which doesn't even have Mouse Button 4, and the problem haunting the technician and me moments before plugging in the different mouse disappeared! Before putting in the logitech and at the height of the problem the pull down file, edit, view menus dropped down by merely pointing at the label without even pressing the left button on the mighty mouse! At this point the left clicking was self-actuating!
I either need to disable mouse button 4 so it doesn't clog the USB Card port for the mouse or use another mouse.
I need to know if my theory of an overloading of the mouse is feasible? Or must I isolate the offending printer or scanner which I am presently doing by uninstalling them all if it is really even caused by one of them would need to be replaced with a compatible new peripheral. Expensive!
If my scanner or printer is incompatible which I am not sure I know how to test for which is the real cause of the problem. If you think that my theory is right-on about Mouse button 4 clogging up the rest of the buttons then it would be better to just turn it off or use another mouse or an older Apple Mouse than uninstalling each peripheral one by one and troubleshooting until next summer. Hope to hear from you guys. I really need help. Note: every aspect of my Imac purchase during these events have been replaced and replace again. I have had 3 separate apple mighty mice, 3 USB extension cable replacements, and two Imac in the time since October 12th when it started. I have called tech support until it is coming out of my ears. Now I am relying on you all. Oh, I have erased and reinstalled every operating system twice to make sure it was not a corruption in the OS in each computer.

Sorry I am so lengthy. The problem is that with the technical support guy on line, when the Mouse button 4 event occurred I described to the tech that I was pushing and pulling the mouse from the back end to avoid touching the buttons on the side and every time I rolled the mouse a few inches forward the dashboard assigned to mouse button 4 appeared and next when I rolled it back the dashboard disappeared, I rolled it forward and it reappeared and so on. Then the tech wanted me to click on the apple and go into system preferences and as my cursor touched the file menu to get to the preferences that menu dropped without me left clicking the mouse. As I passed over edit and view they just dropped down.
What do you make of that? I am presently running OSX leopard without my printer and scanner installed. If I see no problem in two days, I will plug in the printer and install it. Then after that the scanner and see if the problem happens. I will follow your suggestions about relearning the mouse though.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

AVG anti virus problems

Any one else having a problem with AVG anti virus or is it just me ? I’ve hear its stopped working for some people. It’s not working right for me at all, as of this morning I have been getting a lot of errors from it every time I try to open a new webpage on Firefox. I get a Connection Rest and have to refresh. Offten more then once.
It keep coming up constantly and its extremely annoying and its hard to get any work done. It’s the only anti virus that I have so I don’t know what’s wrong with it.

Files dont delete, is this virus problem?

Hi, I just bought my Mac some days ago and today I've attached my mp3 to it with some songs I previously had on my PC. I know there were viruses on my old PC, but I don't know if this files were infected. But as I put them on my Mac and then wanted to delete them (move from trash) they say that they are "blocked"
what does that mean, how can I remove them? Please help!

Cookies.sqlite folder is causing computer freezes/crashes. HD-problem ? Firefox-problem ? virus problem ? Solution ??

Hi, this is a bit complicated so please bear with me. Thank you.
Simply put my question is: What exactly is stored in "cookies.sqlite" ? I notice there are many cookies-files in my profile, such as "cookies.sqlite.bak", "cookies.sqlite-shm", "cookies.sqlite-wal" etc. What exactly gets lost if I delete "cookies sqlite" ? Can I even do that without hurting the rest of my profile ?
And could there be anything in this "cookies sqlite" folder that is causing Firefox not to run and my computer to freeze every time I try ?
Reason for asking: Not sure if I have a corrupted Firefox file, a hard drive problem or another problem.
Background info: The day before yesterday, my notebook (Lenovo, XP) was working fine. When I went to start it up yesterday, it did not boot properly. I tried a couple of times and eventually it worked. I tried to open Firefox which caused the computer to freeze. When I forced a shut-down and turned it back on, it ran checkdisk. It detected something, fixed it and started back up again. Explorer worked, so I went ahead and saved all my data manually. Then I wanted to save my Firefox profile as well and the computer froze. I started it back up, tried again and the same thing happened. I then tried again file-by-file. The file freezing my system turned out to be "cookies sqlite". I was able to copy all other files (including all other cookie-files). But when I touched "cookies.sqlite" (and we're talking copy and paste to an external HD) the machine froze. I tried the same thing through a Ubuntu live CD and again I was able to copy all of the profile except the cookies sqlite file. I tried doing an Acronis backup and there were some reading errors at the very end of the backup. I ran Lenovo's PC doctor that said that there is a hard drive problem. I ran chkdisk from the command line and the computer froze during chkdsk. I tried to see what on the computer was still working and it turned out that nearly everything was fine. I was able to start Opera and Thunderbird, burn DVDs etc. But when I tried Firefox again the computer froze. Every time it freezes and I force a shut-down and re-boot it, I get something different on chkdsk. Sometimes nothing (all is well), sometimes something is repaired or deleted at various stages of chkdsk. But apart from that the computer works just fine. Well, almost: The only other thing that causes problems is running a virus scan (with Avast anti-virus). Again the computer crashes towards the end of the check (similar to Avast) and I get a "kernel_stack_inpage_error" with a bunch of number codes. Running scans with anti-malware-tools (Malawarebytes, Superantispyware, Spybot) is fine and nothing is found.
So my question would be: is it possible that that cookies.sqlite file is somehow corrupted and is causing all these problems ? Or is it a malfunctioning hard-drive with an isolated problem in the area where this file is located ? What is the best way to find out ? (Given that I can neither run chkdsk from the command line, neither run an antivirus scan). What can I try to do about it ? What happens if I delete the "cookies.sqlite" - file and replace it with an older version ? Could that solve the problem ? Or will it cause even more ? And is there any chance to save the data from that cookies.sqlite-file ? Safe mode does not work (same thing: computer freezes), neither does Ubuntu live CD.
Oh, and the hard drive is a Hitachi Travelstar which is about 3 years old, so it should still have lots of life left.

Virus problems still persist

We are still having problems with some workstation sending out a virus
through the Nat. Logs are indicating that the culprit is the Nat server. If
I use the default filters along with denying all traffic, will that be the
next step in resolving this.

Assuming these are like 95% of the viruses that propagate via SMTP, this
means you are simply allowing all workstations to get to port 25 on
public servers (and they do this via dynamic NAT). NAT is *not* the
problem, just the mechanism. The reason the "culprit" looks like the NAT
server is because of dynamic NAT translating the real infected hosts'
address.
If you want to see who is really infected, but a sniffer on the BM
private segment looking for destination port 25 (possibly excluding any
legit SMTP server you might have on your LAN). If you see a WS trying to
get to port 25, that is your culprit.

Yes. By default private hosts cannot get to port 25 (among others)
through the firewall. Clearly your current exceptions are allowing such
traffic.

Virus problem perhaps

hi all, i am a new Mac user and am loving it . minor challenges, amongst them one is - 'msqmPPT3497624026' i see this file everyday in a folder called 'Unrecovered Files' which strangely reappears in my Trash Can. i delete the folder along with the file every time and I see it every time i re-start my computer.
think this first came from a USB storage device which i borrowed from my colleagues at work. must be a virus in the pc world - is as confused as i am in the mac world. amongst odd behaviours - the battery despite being charged full and connected to a power source at times show 98% remaining and then later on corrects itself.
what should i do? someone please help.

Is the folder actually called "Recovered Files"? If so, it is normal to find that folder in your trash after a restart, and it is normal to find weird files in it. The contents of the temporary folder are put there on restart, so that, if your computer crashes, you can recover any auto-save files or the like that may have been in the temporary folder. Just empty the trash.
Note that, in the Mac world, every little issue shouldn't be blamed on viruses. See my Mac Virus Guide.

DEP (virus) problem

When I close iTunes, my Windows Vista gets really busy for a couple minutes. Then I get "Data Execution Prevention shut down iTunes". So, why is the computer having to shut program down after I click on close?
NOTE: I just downloaded the app yesterday.

That's been a "feature" of iTunes running on Vista for several releases ... although irritating, it doesn't indicate a fundamental problem (other than the creation of log files within Windows every time the "error" occurs). There have been several long-running threads on the issue here and, although I'm sure its been reported through Apple's feedback page many times, it has not yet been resolved. One could be pessimistic and say that it never will, since its doubtful that support for Vista is high on Apple's list of priorities; Microsoft already provides reduced levels of support for Vista and is due to terminate all support in a couple of years' time.

VIRUS PROBLEMS, HELP PLEASE???

I continue to have messages popping up saying my computer is infected. It wants me to cleanup and I have to register with Mac Shield 2.6. Pronograhic websites keep popping up. Anyone having this problem? Did not have this problem yesterday, but it's here today! There is also a Red Sheild on the top of the toolbar where it shows the time, battery life, etc. Right clicking on the sheild drops down Scan Now, Cleanup, Control Center, Scan, System Info, Settings, About, and Register. A pron site just popped up again! Need help Please!!

Your exactly right, it is possible that if you visit a site and need the scripts to run for something that the malware that uses Javascript is on that site, then your going to be presented with it.
The thing is with the Firefox + NoScript combination defeats alot of the web side trickery the malware authors are using to get the malware to appear in the first place.
Also this "MacDefender" isn't the only malware making the rounds. There are some serious Flash vulnerabilities being hosted on hostile/adult websites that are running scripts for no apparent reason other than to try to infect your machine.
By running all scripts all the time, your computer is in a state as if you tried running across a busy highway blindfolded.
As a lifelong "MacHead" I can understand Apple loyalty, but if Apple isn't cutting the mustard on their browser security, rather place their users security at serious risk for the sake of convenience, then I have to think about using and recommending to others something else that is more secure.
As a example, I surf thousands of web pages a day, some on really nasty sites, yet I haven't seen this "MacDefender" appear on my computer. Even when I purposely visited links that people have submitted that had the malware. (I maintain a couple of bootable clones of my boot drive just in case)
