Virus Protection and Firewall Question

I just switched from a PC to a Mac. Should I download virus protection and if so which one is best for a Mac? Also, I believe my computer came with the firewall turned off... should I turn that on?

Should I download virus protection...
No. The OS has built-in recognition of known Mac malware in files downloaded from the Internet. All commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac are worse than useless. Do not install any of them.
...and if so which one is best for a Mac?
Your mind. All Mac malware takes the form of trojans, which depend on the victim's ignorance to be installed. Don't be ignorant.
Also, I believe my computer came with the firewall turned off... should I turn that on?
Not unless you are on an untrusted network, such as a public hotspot, and have services enabled in the Sharing preference pane. Under any other circumstances, the firewall should be left off.

  • When installing third party software, how do I temporarily turn off the factory installed virus sw and firewall?

when installing third party software, how do I temporarily turn off the factory installed virus sw and firewall?  Is it necessary on a Mac to do so?  I come from the Windows world and am still in the learning curve on the Mac.

Correct.  I have not installed ANY other software for anti-virus, etc.  I want to install a Synch app for my HTC phone to sych with MS Outlook 2011 installed on my Mac.    HTC will not synch with it otherwise.  That was really the basis for my question....if installing a non Apple app can be done without messing with factory settings on the Mac.  In Windows I remember that I needed to disable Norton and the Firewall in order for installation to occur.
    Thanks.

    This is an interesting read:

Currently there are no viruses for Mac; your best protection is not to visit or download from questionable sites. If you are running Windows,, yes, you will need some AV protection.

  • How do I stop about blank pop ups that are caused by Firefox? These are blocked ny my virus protection and ar

Ok my virus protection, I use Kaspersky, is detecting a packer every time I try to load Farmville on Facebook. This results in the game reloading over and over again. These pop up quickly with about blank in the address but nothing else. The path for this leads to Firefox...C:\Users\Toshiba\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\yipb6gme.default\Cache\C\4D\C1121d01. This was the last one shown in the list. It's a Swf2Swc. Today I have 24 at various times with 2 to 3 each time I tried to load Farmville. When my virus protection stopped them Farmville reloaded so I was never able to actually get into it.
    How can I stop these.
Just so you know I did try safe mode with the same results

'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.

''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''

'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
    Please report back soon.

  • Your latest upgrade states that it is incompatible with my Avast Virus protection and others who have McAfee have the same problem. Does this mean if we update Firefox it will interfere with our virus software?

Your new recommended update appears incompatible with my and other's virus protection. How can we be sure we can safely navigate if your security on the older versions of firefox are lifted? It seems that many people are having this problem and have said they will return to Internet Explorer. Please advise as I prefer Firefox but cannot take the chance of malware and other infections. I would appreciate a hasty response.

No, it doesn't affect your anti-virus program, only the silly little extensions that some anti-virus applications install into Firefox that duplicate features which are built into Firefox = anti-phishing & web forgery protection.

  • WT310 Screen protection and dock question

I own the WT310 with pen accessory and although i'm very satisfied with it i have two questions
1 - Is it possible to remove the Anti-glare screen protection, as i prefer to have a brighten display and it seems to be just a thin removable layer, will it lead to a malfunction display ?
2 - Is it possible to use the Z10T-A keyboard dock on the WT310 model ?
    Many thanks

    > 1 - Is it possible to remove the Anti-glare screen protection, as i prefer to have a brighten display and it seems to be just a thin removable layer, will it lead to a malfunction display?
Yes, I think you can remove the protection foil and this should not affect the display functionality.
    > 2 - Is it possible to use the Z10T-A keyboard dock on the WT310 model?
The WT310 as well as Portege Z10t Ultrabook support the PA5105E-1PRP tablet dock.

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps to download the Adobe Reader file.

If that still fails then you will have to use another computer to download the file and use an USB stick too transfer the file.

  • I have Kaspersky virus protection and it says Firefox has been reported as unsafe to download. Is this true?

I used fiefox before my last crash 6 months ago. When I reinstalled all my other software I tried to load firefox from the web. I go the message from my Kaspersky not to download as it was reported by Microsft as being dangerous. What is the real situation and shoudl I disregard ther warning. I liked the firsfox when I had it before.

That sounds unusual. I am guessing it would have been a false positive, and and any such report will have been corrected by now. However be careful you know what site you are actually using, just in case you are being redirected to some spoof site.
    Try for instance http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
No doubt others will quickly respond if there is any genuine warning still displaying about firefox downloads.

  • I cannot download/install AVG virus protection and Adobe Flash Player and both seem related to Firefox

The free version of AVG goes through most of the installation, then stops, says there is a problem and I should look at Firefox security bar at top of page, which I never find.
Trying to download/install Flash Player, pretty much the same frustration, time after time.

Close Firefox before running the Flash installer - that's Adobe's rules for installing the Plugin version of Flash.

  • General Mac Housekeeping and Virus Protection

My MBP is my first foray into the world of Mac computing ever (well, not counting playing Oregon Trail back in 3rd grade on an ancient dinosaur of a mac haha) and so far it's been a positive experience. The CPU fan pretty much self-destructed, but it's being repaired as we speak, so no worries.
My question is this. As a lifetime Windows user (and until getting my MacBook, proponent of it being BETTER than Mac OS... boy did I learn my lesson) I used to commonly have to perform a lot of general housekeeping tasks, such as running the defrag utility, virus scanning, spyware scanning, disk cleanup, etc etc, and so on. Is this necessary in the OSX environment? Especially the virus protection software?
I neglected to purchase Norton Internet Security because it wasn't universal, but our PC's have always fallen pray to worms and viruses. I know Mac's are supposed to be amazing against viruses (a la the Mac vs. PC commercials) but is some virus and spyware protection necessary?
Anyway, my question got a lot more long winded than I planned and I SHOULD be working now, but hey, State workers are SUPPOSED to slack off, right? =P

OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility called Macaroni that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    4. SuperDuper (Commercial)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - not universal binary.)

  • Do I need virus protection for my Imac ?

Is this a dumb question ?

Macs are not impervious to virus's. But if you do er on the paranoid, then there are a few options out there...
    ClamXV http://www.clamxav.com/
an open source antivirus engine as a back end and has the ability to detect both Windows and Mac threats.
    And Sophos http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-ed ition.aspx
I don't have any virus protection, and have never had any problems... this is one of the reason I made the switch.

  • Virus protection/ firewalls?

I was wondering if the mac comes equip with virus protection and firewalls? Is there anything anyone can suggest that I get that would be good?

    Jordan89,
Apple recommends using antivirus on your Mac. Item 6.
Apple ships antivirus in OS X Server. The antivirus
engine, clamav, is the same one found in clamXav, which was recommended earlier.
The marketspeak cited by Macbooked is just that - ad copy.
The firewall that comes with OS X is industrial-strength. Turn it on and
    lock it down.

  • OS 10.5.4 and Photoshop Question

I skipped the last update after reading about issues with Photoshop. I'm hesitant about this update after reading some posts.
Have any Photoshop CS3 users updated yet and, if so, what's the results as far as Photoshop goes?

Create a bootable backup of your current system to a bootable external drive. Then update. If all is well, no problem. If not you can restore your old system. This is a procedure you should use for any system update.
    Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Obviously you can also clone your system using other software such as that recommended above that do bootable backups (clones.)
    Before cloning always:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
