Virus ruined Win7, no upgrade disk to be found?

Hi everyone.
I have a G70-467CL notebook.  It came with Vista, with the promise that when Windows 7 came out I could upgrade for free.  I did so as soon as I could.
Here it is 3 years later, I get a virus that makes booting my machine impossible.  I took out the HD, copied my important files to a backup HD, and started over from scratch.  Only problem is, I can't find the upgrade disc ANYWHERE.
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated, as I'm in the 3rd week of a new school semester and I can't do without my notebook computer.  (That and I forgot how much Vista sucked, AND buying Win 7 seems rediculous since I already have it...)
Anyway, I can't recall if HP sent out upgrade discs or if you had to download Windows 7 or what the deal was, because it's been a while.  If they sent out discs, I can't find mine anywhere.  And HP's website is a mess when it comes to ordering recovery discs.  (Of Windows 7, not Vista.  I made those, they worked...)  AND I have to pay them if I even want to talk to a real person...
Apologies for my tone.  This whole ordeal is *really* bothering me...
Thank you in advance, and I really appreciate anyone's help.
Good evening.

To the best of my knowledge, the Windows 7 upgrade discs once lost, cannot be ordered again. (Microsft limitation i guess, due to long time since the upgrade program was launched). Hence I think the only option is to have a retail version of Win 7 and install it for your notebook.
Although I am an HP Employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

  • T400 - lost Win 7 64 upgrade disks

    Hi everyone
Unfortunately I have lost my Lenovo Win 7 64 upgrade disks (the infamous one delivered by Mentor Media from Singapore). Does anyone have experience of reordering them?
I've sent an email to them (in answer to their original It's shipping mail) but don't hold high hopes.
Any tip would be gratefully received.

    Madrid, Spain

I do not think there is anyway you can get a replacement discs because these are upgrade discs that were send during 2007 window 7 launched. Each set has the window 7 serial number and these are non-replaceable. Neither Mentor or lenovo is liable for item lost.
However, if you are talking about recovery discs, then maybe lenovo itself may entertain a replacement set. Do note that mentor is just a CDROM maker who at that time was contracted to do the window 7 upgrading process.
In your situation and if the win7 is installed on a working lenovo, I would suggest you google and download a software like ABR which can scan and extract the serial number and sometimes the activated profile. You can then download the digital official window 7 x64 bit (google it) and burn discs, then write the serial number on it. Note that since the win 7 has been activated, you cannot resell or reinstall the serial on another machine.

  • My iMac will not boot up from the Leopard upgrade disk nor will it eject it.

My iMac is very slow and sluggish.  Followed online instructions to use the Disk Utility to run repair.  After doing so it told to reboot my system from the install disk and then run the Disk Uitility to run repair from it.  I put in my Leopard upgrade disk and tried to reboot.  I get the chime and  the Apple logo and hear the disk trying to be read, but after about 5 minutes my iMac shuts completely off.  I have tried to eject the disk using all the methods found in the community and nothing works.  I want to try my orignal Mac OS X install disk to see if that works.  My computer is about a 2007 model.  It worked great until just a couple days ago.  Frankly I can't afford to take it in so I will have to figure this out on my own with your help. :-(

I cannot open terminal.  When booting I get the gray screen with the Apple logo and the twirling comb goes for a while and shut the computer completely off.
    I got into the single-mode user and learned the following: disk1s3: I/O error.  SAM Multimedia: Read & Write failed, SENSE_KEY = 0x03, ASC = 0x02m ASCQ = 0x00.
Singleuser boot -- fsck not done
    Root device is mounted read-only.
If you want to make modifcations to files: /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
I typed in the drutil eject and got:
    SAM Multimedia: Read & Write failed, SENSE_KEY = 0x03, ASC = 0x02m ASCQ = 0x00.
Library not loaded.  Reason: not suiteable image found.
    It did find:
    /system/library/rivateframeworks/installserver.framwork/versions/a/installserver :  unknown file type, firfst eight bytes: 0xCA 0xfe 0xba 0xbe 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x04 Trace/BPT trap.
I have tried holding the left mouse key, the eject key and nothing happens.  To bad I can't pull the
    thing out with tweezers.
So where do I go from here?

  • How can I install after a hard drive failure with only upgrade disk?

I've been using Photoshop since 1998 but my HDD recently suffered a complete failure and I've had to change the drive. Unfortunately, I don't have my original Photoshop disk, only a CS2 and CS5 upgrade disk (with both serial numbers). Is there any way round this problem? Many thanks in advance for any replies.

    Welcome to the forum.
My upgrade path started with Ps version 2.5. That was the last full version, that I had. All the rest were upgrades from there, though to CS 2.
When I went to install CS 2, I was asked for the CS version. I had both the upgrade disc and the S/N (my S/N's went through a couple of iterations, over the decades). In my case, the CS version disc was inserted, found and the installation went smoothly.
Now, while I have CS 5 (and 5.5 and 6), I never installed CS 5, it was just part of the upgrade path, to get me to CS 6 at the end. With my CS 5 S/N, CS 6 installed fine.
That was what worked for me, and I hope will work for you too. Keep that CS 2 disc handy, as you might need to insert that into the multi-drive, at a point in the CS 5 installation.
The one worry that I would have, with an HDD failure, would be Activation, as you probably did not Deactivate Ps, before that failure. For that, should you be up against your allowed Activations, you will likely want to call Adobe Customer Support, and explain your problem. They should be able to reset the Activations, and help you.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • I can't get Macbook Pro DVD drive to read my Windows 7 upgrade disk.

I have a 15" Macbook Pro running OSX 10.6.8.  I have been trying to upgrade the OS in my VMWare Virtual Machine from XP to Windows 7.  However, when I insert the upgrade disk, it just spins for a few minutes and then tells me the disk is a blank disk.  I  tried it with the drive tied to the VM XP OS, but that did not work and got the same result.  I then tried the disk in a PC I have and it seems to work fine there.  Also, I have tried other disks in my Mac drive (e.g. DVD movies) and they seem to work as well.  I am not quite sure where the problem is.  Any ideas?

  • I want to install Windows 7 in bootcamp on my imac with Lion 10.7, but only have a Windows 7 upgrade disk.  I also have a full Vista.  Can I install in bootcamp using the Windows 7 upgrade disk?  If so, what do I need to know about how?

    Hi,
I want to install Windows 7 on my imac in bootcamp.  I have a windows 7 upgrade disk and a full vista disk.  Normally on a PC I would install Vista, then upgrade to Windows 7.  I see that bootcamp 4 only supports Windows 7.
Can I install the Windows 7 upgrade disk without first installing Vista?  Will this work in bootcamp?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Install 7. Don't bother with applying drivers and such, just reboot again from DVD and install again, it will see the existing system and this time activation will be possible.
Vista is mess, takes longer etc. Hope you have SP1 version of 7. And for Vista, only SP2+ are even supported now, by MS.

  • How can you use Win 7 upgrade disk if Boot Camp 4 doesn't support XP or Vista?

I've just purchased a Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade disk to upgrade my Win XP Pro. I haven't installed Lion or Boot Camp 4 yet but am concerned that if I need to reinstall Win 7 in the future the upgrade disk will require that Win XP Pro be installed first.
If  my Win XP Pro isn't supported and can't be reinstalled in Lion/Boot Camp 4, does anyone know what my options would be?
Can't get to Microsoft tech support without having a post-install product ID and their forums don't seem to cover this specific question for Mac/Boot Camp users or VMWare/Parallels users. I'm hoping that once activated that might be enough to turn the upgrade disk to a full version for reinstalling, but I'm not betting on it.
Any help appreciated before I permanently remove my XP Boot Camp partition for a clean install of Win 7 Ultimate.
    Thanks

  • How do I reinstall Lion if I get a new hard drive?  My mac came with Leopard and I cannot find my upgrade disk for Snow Leopard

My MacBook Pro originally came with Leopard.  I have the OS and Applications disks for Leopard but I cannot find my upgrade disk for Snow Leopard.  I would like to perform a clean install of Lion on the new hard drive and restore some data from my Time Machine backup.  I am not looking to restore the current image to my new hard drive.  I have not yet removed the exisiting hard drive nor have I wiped my data.

The only way to do that is to buy a New SL Retail DVD. Or you could buy the Lion Install USB thumb drive from Apple for $69.
You must have SL installed to then install Lion or have a thumb drive with the Lion installer.
You could also create a Lion USB Recovery thumb drive using Lion Disk Assistant. But you need to have Lion already installed and the Lion RecoveryHD Partition on your drive to make the Recovery thumb drive.

  • Can I Install Windows 7 On 27" Imacs (36 of Them) With The Upgrade Disk?

    So basically, we have a 36 station iMac 27" lab, with 1 Mac Pro and 15 2.8 duo and 2.53 i5 MBP's.
We purchased the Windows 7 upgrade disk(by we I mean the "lead" tech guy)which normally shouldn't be a problem.
However as many of you know, the GPU drivers don't quite work out with 7, so you need to follow the workaround provided by Apple. Apple needs you to have the regular install disk that is recognized by Bootcamp.
All we can do is set it to start from disk after XP is installed.
So can we do anything? Is Apple going to update bootcamp so that we can just flat out install it? In the meantime, is there a workaround, can we trick bootcamp into reading an upgrade disk.
    Thanks for the help.

i dunno about upgrade disc. but i upgraded from windows vista to windows 7 ultimate (32bit and 64bit with clean install) with a full installation disc with upgrade option selected. there is 1 issue i faced when installing, fooling me that its a failed attempt at first. maybe this is the problem most of us is having. i have boot camp 3.0 installed in fact.. boot camp 3.1 is not for me. i don need that. this is the problem while installing, the screen will just go blank after the windows 7 finishes install... but the main thing is i can still press the caps lock on and off. 1st i thought it is a failed attempt. to resolve this, enter ur username (actually windows is asking for ur username), and press enter... now hard restart the imac (press and hold the power button). right when the white screen disappear, press f8 button for optional boot selection. choose "safe mode", and wait. if a screen appear saying that the installation cannot continue with safe mode. restart the imac until u reached the blank screen again where u have to insert ur username. i did this actually, i did a lot of clicking and enter, and entering my username. and restart the thing again, press f8 to safe mode. until i go into safe mode successfully. when i am in safe mode, i go to device manager and deleted the graphic card (mine radeon hd4850), in fact that is the windows driver for hd4850 and restart the imac. this time i am 100% sure i can login to windows 7. when in windows 7, just update the device driver from imac 27" DVD from boot camp, and restart. u have to update the sound and bluetooth driver too in order to have proper sound card and magic mouse operation.
maybe i am a bit off, but hope this helps. cheers.

  • Trying to load CS5 upgrade disk - does not recognize CS-2 install

I'm trying to load my copy of CS5, which is an upgrade disk from CS2.  I have all the original disks, serial and activation numbers for CS2.  But I find that the activation numbers are no longer valid.  CS5 disk will not even start up on my WIN 8 machine

Nothing earlier than CS6 is supported under Windows 8.
That said you can try downloading the installers for CS5 here: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-product-downloads.html

  • Snow Leopard 'Installation Failed' using Upgrade Disk

I have a Mac Pro Quad 2.66 machine and can't get Snow Leopard to install. I originally ran the installer and was asked if I wanted to run the other updates that were cued in Software Update first. I approved running the updates first, then the Snow Leopard upgrade install took over. Part way in it restarted the machine and then hung on the gray apple logo startup screen. No disk activity, nothing.
I then attempted to reboot and couldn't get past the startup screen, that is until I pulled the system hard drive. Once it was disconnected it booted fine off the CD, but I was prompted with a "10.6 can't be installed unless a 10.5 or later system is found" or something to that effect. I rebooted again after shutting down and reconnecting the system drive. Again it booted off the CD but wouldn't let me install because 10.5 or later was 'not found'. I then did an archive and install of 10.5 onto the machine which got it up and running again. I then ran the 10.6 installer again and it looked to be a-ok until it rebooted and continued the install. It got to 33 minutes remaining and then gave a "Installation Failed" message. I re-ran the update installer a few times and it always gives the same message.
The 10.5 installation is still intact and runs fine. Disk Utility finds no problems or permissions issues. There is plenty of HD space. Everything seems like it's fine. To test that I didn't have a 'bad disk' as Apple has been telling some people I ran the upgrade on a new Macbook Pro 13". No sweat, installed flawlessly.
So here I sit with a Mac Pro that WILL NOT allow an install of 10.6. Argh. Makes no sense, but seeing all the other reports of the same issues makes me feel better as I'm not the only one.
Two things bother me: 1) The upgrade disk does not have a provision for an Archive and Install which is a pain in the butt since it requires doing a clean 10.5 install before doing the 10.6 upgrade, and 2) That a number of people seem to be having the same issue and that there has been no response from Apple yet.
As a side note, after having the issue I did find the Apple Knowledge Base article ( http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2990 ) detailing the problems that arise from allowing the Software Update updates to install before letting 10.6 do its thing. The KB article of course says "If you have already upgraded to Mac OS X v10.6 and are experiencing this issue, reinstall Mac OS X v10.6". Of course there is no way to reinstall 10.6 if you have an upgrade disk... You have to reinstall 10.5 and then run the upgrade which might be why it's still not working.
I've also zapped the PRAM and tried installing in safe mode.
    So what's the deal Apple?

Ahhh yes, I did. That's what I get for reading the boards so late!
I'd still try another SL disc if at all possible.
You could also try putting the SL disc in the MBP's optical drive, booting the MBP in target disk mode and connecting the two via Firewire, then booting the Mac Pro using the option key & running the install that way.
The SL install discs are picky beasts and it may be that yours just doesn't like the disc drive in your computer.

  • How to Boot from Leopard Upgrade disk??

I bought a Leopard upgrade disk last year for my iMac. Today I am having computer troubles. But there seems to be no diagnostic programs on the Leopard upgrade disk, nor does it seem to be a bootable disk. What should I do next?
The problem with the computer is, everywhere I click I get the rainbow colored spinny wheel. When I want to open an app, I get the spinny wheel. When I want to scroll in a window, I get the spinny wheel. It may take several minutes before the spinny wheel goes away, and the command carries out. Illustrator flat out refuses to launch, as well.

That's different. It's not an upgrade disk. It should be bootable. Insert the disk in your Mac and reboot while holding down the 'c' key. What OS are you running? What model iMac? Give some some info please. It will not have hardware diagnostics on it. It will have Disk Utility so you can run Repair Disk.

  • After 10.5.4 upgrade Disk Utility does not longer format UBS FlashDrive to

After 10.5.4 upgrade Disk Utility does no longer format disk to FAT32 only FAT16.
I have use 2 different Mac to format my USB Drive and I still get FAT16 there is no drop down selection for FAT16 or FAT32. Both Mac are Intel and running the latest OSX 10.5.4. Actually, this happen after I upgraded to 10.5.4.
just wondering is anyone out there having the same issue, if someone know a way to fix this will be greatly appreciated.
P.S. The USB is a Lexar (it never gave me any trouble).

In that case, you're looking at doing an Archive & Install installation. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545?viewlocale=en_US for details.

  • 10.4 upgrade disk keeps freezing in same spot

I am trying to up grade from 10.3.9 to 10.4 using Max OS X Tiger up grade disk (includes Xcode2) that I purchased. I purchased a 320 Gb Western Digital internal drive , formated it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) single partition. I then installed OS 10.3.9 with all the software up dates+ applications and when I try to use the single Upgrade disk it freezes each time at the same place-INSTALLING ESSENTIALS 93% 22 minutes to go, I have tried both the Original Install option and the Archieve and Install option (without checking the little box). I am stumped. Does anyone have an idea what the problem is. I have been customizing the install by not using foreign languages and only checking hp for printer drivers but that shouldn't really matter or should it. I could use some help. Thanks. JDB

    Dear BD Aqua,
I solved the problem by changing the jumper on the back of the drive to Slave. Now have new problem which I have posted:
I recently installed 10.4.11 with all up dates on a new start up hard drive. I used the migration program to transfer all files and applications. Now iPhoto will not open on the new start up hard drive from any of the mounted drives but it will if I restart using the old start up drive. What do I have to do to get iPhoto to open?
    Any suggestions
