Visible folder has become "invisible":
I thought I'd lost a folder but when I was doing a search for a possible copy of one of it's content files, I found the contents along with the "trail" for that file's location. Within the chain of files, there was my missing folder.
I don't know how I made the folder invisible BUT how do I get that folder back into my real-world?

the "/" means that the original folder is directly in
the root directory. Open File Buddy, select "New List
Window" from the menu "List", then click "Add" and
add your hard disk. Now double-click it once which
should show the root directory with folders such as
"Library", "System", "Users" and so forth. One of
these folders should be the invisible folder you are
looking for (given that you selected to show
invisible items in the Preferences of File Buddy).

Did as directed. File did not show-up when I did the double-click. It DID show up when I did a single click to create the sub-listing. However, trying to make it visible in the "information" window gave NO changed results. Finding the folder was not a problem, making it visible "outside" the disc program is my goal. That and figuring out how it became invisible in the first place. As far as I can determine, NO symbol (.) or (/) appears in front of the folders name.

I can restore his visibility with Terminal "sudo chflags nohidden /Users", but when I restart it returns to invisibility.

What I did as a workaround was in Finder/Go/Go to Folder type Users. That made the User folder visible. I created an alias of the folder and put it in Finder's Sidebar. Repeated procedure typing Shared, making an alias, and putting it in the Sidebar. Restarted and the alias links will take you there even after a restart.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Helvetica font has become "invisible" to Pages

Today I realised that Helvetica font has become "invisible" to iWork applications! I open Pages and Helvetica is not listed in the font list. I press Command+T and it's not there. In TextEdit it is, but in Pages it's not. In Font Book it's active, checked font, it's OK. Other fonts from the System/Library/Fonts folder are listed, only Helvetica is missing. WHY?
When I copy Helvetica font from the System/Library/Fonts to Library/Fonts folder and use this duplicated font, I see it in Pages. And I cannot even disable original Helvetica font in the System/Library/Fonts folder in Font Book, even if I try. Font Book displays warning and then doesn't disable even if there is the same font in the System/Library/Fonts folder.
I sent bug report to Apple but maybe someone can give me some clue how to solve this problem without font duplication?

OK, if you mean Global Financial Crisis (it's my guess) then we are still going down, and nothing suggests that anything will change soon. Maybe after one year we may see some improvement. People are very pessimistic, many leave the country as they don't see any future here. Government has led the country to absolute ruin, and it's getting worse and worse as they add new taxes and increase existing ones. VAT was increased from 18% to 21%, and thus all products became about 5-10% more expensive. Only bus tickets have become 10% cheaper. Medicine got more expensive. Recently they added "in average 30%" to the road taxes, which in reality is 100-200% increase. No one has explained what formula they used to get "30%". In the last half a year in rural regions income has fallen almost by half... Estonia and Lithuania aren't hit by GFC so much as Latvia, Estonians are already recovering and soon will be back where they were one year ago. I think this crisis will reflect in Apple product sales in Baltics very soon.

Desktop Folder has become package

The Users/myname/desktop folder has become a "package" rather than a folder. No idea how this happened and the result is too many bizarre things to go into. "Get Info" on the blue desktop icon shows all permissions at read/write - but instead of saying that it is a folder - which it does on my other 3 macs - it has become a package.
TIA for any advice about how to correct this.

Look in it by right-clicking and using "Show Package Contents". If it contains any files you want to save, drag them to another folder. Delete the Desktop package and logout. It should create anew Desktop folder when you login.

Lynn, try to relax. There is nothing about the upgrade itself that would cause those problems.
In here, you'll find tons of problems, it is the ER for 10.7 problems. Most users upgrade with no issues at all and don't ever come here.
Usually, problems are pre-exisisting and are exacerbated by the update process. I know that isn't what you want to hear but it's true. Did you run Disk Utility > Repair Disk before updating?
Have you tried starting up in Safe Mode and test?
Do you have any existing backup? Are they WD drives?
There are new items on the Dock in 10.7 and if you don't want them just drag them off and "poof" them.

Desktop folder has become a Package

I know about the 'freezing' desktop issue but i don't think my issue fits into that category..
When i click the Desktop folder from Finder i get "There is no default application specified to open the document 'Desktop'".
If i drag and drop a file to the Desktop my icon switches to the prohibited icon. If i do a screen grab, in order to see the output i need to "Show Package Contents" on the Desktop package.
I can't find any occurrance of this elsewhere on the net, any other sufferers?

That is odd. Try starting in "Safe Mode" If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. (EDIT: if you have no desktop to drag them to drag them to another location temporally.) Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
It will take a bit more time to startup because it runs a directory check.
If that's not it, while still in safe mode trash your desktop folder then, then create a new one in your Home directory with exactly the same name. If there's anything you need from your old Desktop, save it off.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.

10.7.2 pictures folder has become a package: is there a fix?

Hi,
When I click on it in the sidebar I get terminus window with the current login date/time; when I click it on the list next to the sidebar I get a picture of a folder, saying it's got 6 g of pics in it, and that it is a package.
Is there a fix for this, eg via terminal?
Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi - SUCCESS ! It suddenly (after much searching) dawned that : 'if it thinks it's a package, treat it like a package' and did right click - open package contents, and blimey, there it all is! I have several libraries in the pictures folder, and had to do the same for each library. It may work in Snow Leopard too, saving having to deal with terminal commands.

Keynote has become invisible

When I start Keynote '08 the main window is not visible and nowhere to be found. I can show the inspector, and if I choose the 'build' or 'slide' panels I can see the slides there, I can use the Keynote menus and even go slide to slide in the inspector - but the actual keynote window is nowhere to be seen. If I choose minimize from the menu, the minimized keynote doc appears in the dock as it should - if I restore it, though, the main window does not appear. I can even insert shapes from the menu, I just cant see anything! I have trashed the .plist file, made no difference. Was working beautifully last week. I repaired permissions yesterday - could that have done it?
Hope you can help! (The other iWork Apps are fine.)

Well for the record, in case this ever happens to anyone else ... on a flash of inspiration, I enabled spaces (it is not enabled on my computer) then explored the 4 spaces and found the Keynote window in a different desktop! Go figure ....

Well--let me see if I can explain myself better. If I take my HD footage from the browser to the viewer
it looks fine. The persons head is in full frame. At fit to window it sits @33 %. I then drag it into the timeline and at 25% i have this teeni frame that is now in the Canvas with only the part of the head showing and the parameters looking more like something for DV footage and not widescreen. The fit to window reads 83%.
Again--this is only happening with the one clip even though it has the same specs as the others.
Still miffed as to why this is happening and if this is what I'm stuck with.

Pages on my iPad3 has become very slow to open documents after upgrading to ios7. I've clicked on a folder 5 minutes ago and am still waiting. The work-around seems to be to force-close it, but I've needed to do this many times in the last few days.

Photos dragged to HD from iPhoto become invisible files

I have been experiencing a problem lately where photos dragged from iPhoto to the HD become invisible. The files show up until the window for their location is closed, then they disappear. Cmd I shows that the respective folder has XX amount of space used for zero files. Closer inspection using Cocktail's show invisibles function reveals the photos right where I put them. My iPhoto library resides on an external drive connected to an ethernet server as a share.
I guess this leads me to two questions: First, what could be causing this? Second, how do I make them permanently visible again?
I originally posted this under iPhoto, but another user suggested it was more of a system issue...

Per the suggestion, I opened a few of the files with Photoshop (after making them visible via Cocktail) and they are perfectly intact. I did some further investigating by dragging an mp3 file from my iTunes library which resides on the same shared volume. The mp3 remains visible under the same circumstances that usually cause the image files to turn invisible. After that, I began comparing the info between the two folders which house the two libraries. I think this has led me to the root of the problem... I don't have any ownership privileges of the folder where the iPhoto library resides. Now a new problem... when I try to add myself as owner of the files, it tells me the user name is incorrect, please try again. I even tried using Batchmod to change ownership to no avail. The only thing I haven't tried is to plug the drive directly into my Mac and try changing the privileges—maybe the fact that the drive is connected through the server is blocking me making the change.
...any thoughts?

InDesign PDF export to network server becomes invisible

Just upgraded to InDesign CS5. When I export a PDF document and post onto network server, it becomes invisible. I only know this because when I export onto my desktop and then drag into the network folder, it gives me an error message that it can't replace an invisible file. So I found a way to view the invisible file, trashed it, then dragged the one on my desktop into the network folder. Worked fine. I'd prefer not to have to do this EVERY time I export to PDF. Anyone have any experience with this issue? Help?

I'd vote a dodgy server. I've had no issues with Mac OS X 10.5.x 10.6.x or Windows 2000, 2003, 2008 or Windows 7 shares.
InDesign has been known to work over the network. I think a patched version of CS 5 has little to no issues working on network shares that I've heard of.
Print Professional is a reasonably vague term that doesn't necessarily mean there is an amazing network setup. The difference between having a clean network setup with collision domains that are not congested and a packet dropping nightmare isn't always apparent. One can have a 60 dollar switch or a 2000 dollar switch and that can make all the difference. Similarly a file store can be a fibre channel beast or a NAS with a gigabit connection. Both can throw out the term gigabit and terabyte and be accurate, but the difference between SOHO grade junky with shakey firmware. What you'll get out of the CISCO Catalyst or HP Proliant in comparison to LinkSys and an HP MediaSmart are worlds apart.

Cursor becomes invisible in JTextField after using default button

In my application there is an update screen (JPanel). I am using default button in that panel. The input field is a normal JTextField. When the update is over the cursor goes back to the input JTextField.
     Now my problem is that when I carry out update with mouse, the cursor is correctly placed into the input JTextField and is visible after the update is over. On the other hand, if I carry out the same update operation using default button (using keyboard), the cursor gets placed correctly in the input JTextfield column, but becomes invisible. If I minimize and then again maximize the window, the cursor appears back. What am I missing ? Note that I am using component.requestFocusInWindow() to get focus back to the input JTextField.

Well don't ask me how but my utilities folder has been deleted. I don't have disk utility or any of that anymore. How can i fix this?

Download the shareware utility Pacifist 2.0 from www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the entire Utilities folder from the file archive on your Intel Tiger Installer DVD. The archives may not be "visible" so you will need a utility such as TinkerTool to turn on the Finder's option to display invisible files and folders.
If you haven't emptied the Trash, then it's possible the folder may still be in the Trash. Open the Trash and check. If it's there just drag it out to its proper location in the Applications folder.

Firefox window becomes invisible when I try to restore the window size (maximized works fine)

When I start Firefox the window is invisible. Maximizing it works, but when I try to restore it to the previous size it becomes invisible again.
I've had this problem with other applications and then it was the stored window position that had become corrupted.
I've looked in the registry to see if the window position is stored there, but couldn't find it there.

Good, I guess there must have been at least an edge visible.
Anyway the KB article also now has a better description for manually moving / resizing by first invoking "Alt+Spacebar" (Windows shortcut), thanks to your question.
I just realized you said you clicked on the taskbar icon, that choice does not appear to be possible in Windows 7 but "Alt+Spacebar" still works.
