Visio diagrams in Word docs turn to bitmap in PDF

When creating PDFs from Word documents containing embedded Visio diagrams, the text in the Visio diagrams sometimes turns to bitmap. Sometimes shape outlines become bitmapped too, but that occurs less frequently. If I create a PDF directly from Visio, all is well.
I am using Windows XP SP3, Viso 2003, Word 2003 SP-3, and Acrobat 7. I have also tried with Jaws PDF Creator 3.6 and Bullzip PDF Printer 6, all with similar results. I have tried various different Acrobat Postscript and font settings, but nothing helps.
Interestingly, sometimes performing copy-paste from Visio to Word temporarily solves the problem (i.e. PDF after Visio paste is ok, but PDF next time, after some editing of the DOC, is bitmapped again).
I have also tried on different computers and verified that the problem is not my machine.
Any ideas?
In the meantime I have been reduced to creating a PDF of the diagram and pasting it into the PDF of my document. Not a very good way to work.
I will be most grateful for any and all suggestions.

I have found the solution, though I have no idea why it works or what's really going on. (BTW, it seems the problem only happens with bold text.)
Apparently this is a Word problem.
Here's the solution:
1. Right click the Visio diagram in Word and select Visio Object>Convert.
2. In the Convert dialog select Convert to>Microsoft Visio drawing (for me that was the only option listed), and click OK.
It's a mystery. If anyone has any idea what's going on here, I'd love to know.

    Hi Linda,
I just tried it, and was able to convert a Word .doc to to PDF, in spite of the fact that it was marked Read Only. Here are the instructions for uploading and converting to PDF with Acrobat.com:

  • Why can't I edit the Word doc I converted from a PDF?

Why can't I edit the Word doc I converted from a PDF?
Help! That is why I bought this software!

    Hi linda007,
If you can't edit the file once it's converted to Word, it could be that the PDF was created from a scanned page, and then image text wasn't converted to searchable text. ExportPDF should perform Optical Character Recognition by default, but it can be disabled in Reader. Do you know whether OCR was disabled when you converted the page? If it wasn't, make sure that the correct language was selected for OCR. This option appears at the bottom of the ExportPDF panel in Reader, and in the Document Language (for Text Recognition) pop-up menu that appears after you select your file to convert in the ExportPDF online service.
If everything seems to have been set correctly, and you still can edit the text, please try triple-clicking to select the text in Word. Did that do the trick?
    Best,
    Sara

I need help! I can't type in my word doc that I converted from PDF.

You may have visited a website that has disabled the location bar.<br />
Try to open a new window to see if that gives you a working location bar.<br />
If that works then close the not working window and close and restart Firefox to see if that stays.<br />

when I am in word and safe as word doc. it automaticaly saves as pdf??

    Hey Ted Doan,
The default program for word must have been Adobe Acrobat which us why the file saves as PDF.
Please right-click on your word document icon and select 'Open with> Choose default program'.
Then, a new dialog box appears from where you need to choose 'Word' and click OK.
Now check and then let me know if its fine now.

  • Converted Word Doc Turns Blue

    Hello,
I have converted many Word documents to PDF, using the
plug-in in my Word 2007 program. However, just today I converted a
Word doc to PDF and the resulting PDF was entirely shaded in blue.
I cannot get rid of the blue color and tried different ways of
converting the the document (such as saving it to different Word
versions before converting to a PDF). The document was originally
created in 2005 (using an uknown version of Word) and I have saved
    it using Word 2007.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Thanks! I tried another thing, which also worked. I used  to
select all the intelligence in the document and copied it to a new blank
    document. That worked fine.
I'm going to try your solution, too. Just so I know.
    Thanks,
    Roxanne

  • ER diagrams in word docs and web pages

What are the best ways of getting ER diagrams displayed in Word documents and web pages? The output facilities from Designer seem a bit limited unless I am missing something.

True, the diagrammer is a modelling tool, not a drawing tool.
To get your diagram in word however you can select & copy the entities in a windows fashion to word (Ctrl-C + Ctrl-V).
If you want the contents of the repository in html on the web you should try ODWA (Oracle Designer Web Assitant)!

  • Converting MS Word docs with coloured bacgrounds to pdf

Forgive an Acrobat 'dope' but this outwardly appears to be a simple problem ....... that I can't figure out!
For work I am using Microsoft Office Word 2003 (MS Office Pro 2003) and Acrobat 8 Pro.  I have no problem converting an MS Word doc, with background or foreground images and text, into a pdf.  However, if I give any MS Word doc a coloured background, using the Format Menu > Background > and then selecting a colour, that colour is not carried across in the conversion to pdf - I end up with a standard white page, instead of the coloured one!
Where am I going wrong?  Or is this coloured background something that Acrobat won't convert, whatever I do?  I don't wish to produce a 'pseudo' effect by placing a coloured image behind the text (which I know will work) because the pdf file sizes become larger than I want.  I want to 'colour the paper' using MS Word's menu, and convert to a pdf with that same 'coloured paper' being the result.  Is it possible?  If so, how?
Thanks, in advance, for any help that may be available out there ......

In WORD: TOOLS>Options>Print>Background Colors and Images (I already had background printing checked, but that refers to the printing process, not the background. Checking this other box does the trick. It is probably off by default to keep from using ink in regular printers.)

  • My Word docs are NOT saving as PDF files.

I go to "File, Print, PDF, Save as PDF, save doc to my desktop, click Save"...it "processes" then chimes alerting me it's completed, but the PDF is NO WHERE on my desktop (or anywhere on my laptop for that matter!!)
The interesting thing about this problem ONLY happens when I CREATE that particular Word document. If someone emails me a Word doc and I download it and then open it up in Word, I am then ABLE to save it as a PDF. Soo, I tried emailing the file I created to myself...downloaded it, and tried to save as a PDF, same thing happens as before....no where to be found.
Helpppp. I am SO frustrated. THANKS

Okay - could be a bad file or a document with a goofy format, size, or table of contents snafu.
I had issues with Acrobat 9.x with Word 2010 (Windows).  I stopped using Acrobat and just started doing what you're doing - saving direct from Word > PDF - and haven't had an issue since (other than bloated file sizes even saving as "minimum").
So my advice is to look at your document.  It could be a TOC thing, or a large image, or something else messing up the engine.
Remember, Office 2007, 2010, and 2011 all save DOCX as XML files.  So the "converter" (save-as-PDF) is rendering XML > PDF.

  • Converting Word .doc File with Hyperlinks to PDF

There appear to be a rather large number of posts in this forum describing problems similar to mine. I've tried most of the work-arounds suggested with no good results.
First the basics. I'm running Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional (8.1.3) and Microsoft Office (Word) 2003. My situation is that I've got hundreds of 1 page Word documents that contain a single jpeg with a relative link at the bottom which is suppose to reload an index pdf file that resides one folder above; ie. ..\index.pdf.
The entire reason I went to Acrobat Pro from Standard was to get the Batch Processing capability so I just point to the 100's of Word doc's and have them converted to pdf's in the same directory. Doesn't happen correctly. The link is corrupted during the conversion. I've tried all the setting in both Word and Acrobat that have been suggested... nothing works. Of course the links work fine in Word.
The strange part is that if I use the "Convert to Adobe PDS" menu option in Word (which just calls Adobe Acrobat under the covers) it works fine. Unfortunately, individually converting 100's of one page doc files is time consuming.
    So, my questions are:
Has anyone gotten to the bottom of converting Hyperlinks from Word to Acrobat successfully? (I tried using Word 2007 with similar bad results)
Does anyone know if Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro has solved the Word Hyperlink conversion problem? Is it worth upgrading?
Adobe tells me that I have to pay $39 per incident to get support since I'm one release back. Does anyone have an opinion on how likely it is that Adobe Support will resolve my problem in a timely fashion?
Thanks for any suggestions you may provide. I will continue to look for novel ways of resolving this and will post if I'm successful.

I don't see my reply to the first message; so it may have gotten lost. So, here goes again.
I have tried opening the Word doc in Adobe and get interesting but not usable results. Acorbat converts it to a pdf document. I then look at the link and it's correct. I then click on the link and Acrobat asks me if I want to save the file before loading the index page that is referenced... of course I do... the link works... However, when I then click on the link in the index page to return the newly converted and saved page it is loaded but the link is corrupted.... and no longer works.
This seems to indicate that somewhere in the Acrobat Save routine the module that is doing the save is corrupting the link.
I have tried many combinations with similar results. I am currently looking at writing a VB.NET routine that will restore the link after the save is done... perhaps that will work.
    Thanks for your response.

  • From Word DOC to Acrobat PDF... borders and lines get screwed up.

I've been looking this up for days now and have yet to find a solution.
I have a MS Word document that has a bunch of tables with borders and sometimes just text with borders for stylistic reasons. In Word, it all looks perfect.
But, when I convert it to PDF using Acrobat, many of those borders get screwed up in various random ways.
Sometimes certain borders get thicker, sometimes thinner, sometimes invisible altogether. Sometimes it's only certain lines of the same border (just the left side, or just the top). I see no real pattern to what's causing it to only happen in certain cases only.
What makes it extra annoying is that if I zoom in or out a certain amount, the borders will look the way they are supposed to look. Some will look perfect at 100% zoom only, and some will look perfect at 75% zoom only.
This has been driving me insane. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Converting Word (table) to pdf - lines screwed up - googled as far back as 2004.
    BUG STILL exists. HELP/FIX PLEASE?

Trying to convert any word doc with tables (& shading) to PDF
    - basic table, black borders throughout
    - shaded headings, black outline border
    - shaded subheadings, black outline border
    However when convert to PDF:
    - 'displays' NO top cell border for some/all shaded rows
    - shows diff thickness lines
    - each conversion, diff lines missing/incorrectly sized
    - however converted pdf prints perfectly fine
Adobe know about the bug, per PRMW's (Paul's) post on 2009-07-15 15:44:34, however only offered a painful time consuming workaround using non-freeware Adobe Pro:
    http://acrobatusers.com/forum/pdf-creation/word-pdf-table-lines-missing-or-faded#comment-7 8139
    - "It is not feasable to edit 200+ tables in the PDF every time the PDF is generated, as we maintain the original in word.
    - "This complete issue seems to have been passed off by Adobe as no problem and that there is a work around. I consider this an unsatisfactory response from a major product supplier.
Microsoft TechNet & NitroPdf said it's an Adobe issue & to contact Adobe to fix the bug.
    Tried, but proble exists:
    * Word 2010 > File  > Save & Send > Create PDF/XPS Document

    * www.wordtopdf.com > email: Sorry, an unexpected conversion failure occurred when converting your file.
    Software:
    * Word 2010 - tried with .docx & .doc (97 to 2003)
    * Adobe Reader 8.2.6 (freeware), then upgraded to Adobe Reader X 10.0.1 (freeware)

    * doPDF 7.2.361 (freeware)
