Vista 32 - iTunes crash
After I synced my iPod earlier today, iTunes crashed, and I thought nothing of it. Now, I can't start the program for any reason. I've un-installed, re-installed, upgraded bonjour, done all of the steps at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717 and nothing seems to work. I got it to open once before when I stopped all of my services, however, when my anti-virus, Symantec AntiVirus (which I can't get rid of or I'm denied access to my campus's internet service), bonjour, and 'iPod Service' are running, iTunes crashes before it can even open.
I'm running Vista 32 Home Premium, and this is the first time I've ever had an issue with iTunes or my iPod.
Does anyone have a clue as to why I can't open iTunes?

If you have completed the troubleshooting method in the link you gave, you should know if your problem is system wide or confined to one account.
Which is it?
Do you get any error message when you try to start iTunes? If not, open your Task Manager and look on the processes tab, do you see iTunes.exe there even though iTunes has not opened?
Also try starting Quicktime, does it work normally? iTunes can not work if Quicktime doesn't.

Deleting/moving the itunes library files (iTunes Music Library.xml and iTunes Library.itl) makes it work fine which leads me to believe it crashes when loading the playlist. But not always!
iTunes crashes on startup on my vista 32bit.
Even after I upgraded to 7.4.3.1 and reinstalled iTunes several times.
I've also tried reinstalling quicktime and selecting "Repair" to no avail.
Running it in XP2 compatibility mode doesn't help.
Disabling Aero doesn't help.
Whether or not my iPhone is plugged in or not seems to make no difference.
This is the error msg.

That's all it says and I can't find out anywhere what to do. Does anyone have any advice? ThanksMy iTunes keeps crashing when I try to sync my iPhone as well as when I try downloading the newest iPhone upgrade 2.2.1. I just tried to restore my iPhone and once again iTunes crashed (at around 224MB into the download of the upgrade).
I've restarted my iPhone.
Restarted my iMac.
Re-installing iTunes.
Tried installing iTunes 8.0.1 (instead of 8.0.2).
Created a new user to check if that was the problem.
All with no success.
Any help would be much appreciated. -
A Troubleshooting Guide for Windows Vista and iTunes 8 - user supported
ITunes 8 and Windows Vista can be an explosive combination. Having helped to troubleshoot some problems for people, I decide to consolidate my information all down to one post. The information comes from various sources, and I will try to annotate where it came from. Please let’s keep this a solutions listing post. So people can come to it when they have a problem and easily find a solution.
*ITunes will not install:*
ITunes will sometimes not install or the installation will hang up under Vista. First I will give some generalized steps to take in order of priority, and then get into some specifics.
General
*1. Turn off your Anti-Virus Software.* Some A/V software will prevent the installer from accessing the Windows System Files causing the install to Bork.
*2. Uninstall third-party Audio-Video Codecs.* Installing iTunes also installs Quicktime which installs the necessary codecs to play its supported files. Some codec packs, such as DivX and XviD have the ability to read these files, and their method of decoding these files can cause conflicts with the Quicktime installation. Even third-party CD Burning (Roxio, Nero, and the like) software can cause this problem. Once iTunes is installed, you can reinstall these codecs without any ill effects.
*3. Disable Windows Defender.* Windows Defender is a resident A/V type program native to Windows Vista. It can also sometimes cause conflicts during installation. To disable it, go to the Windows Defender tab in your Control Panel, and chose disable in the dialogue box.
Specific
*1. When I install iTunes, the installation stops and I get error message 2738.* This error message means that the Visual Basic Script is not being installed properly or it could be disabled. To fix this we need to re-initialize the Visual Basic Script server. Do the following:
In the search panel of the start bar, type cmd.exe.
When the search results are listed, right click on cmd.exe and select run as administrator.
Type in the following at the command prompt: regsvr32 vbscript.dll and hit enter.
Run the iTunes install program again.
*2. ITunes installed properly, but now I am stuck in a reboot loop.*
This behaviour is a known problem to Apple and they are working on it. What is happening, when you run the program, it is involking a repair check of your installation. Beaconfield came up with a work around to use until Apple patches the software.
“Navigate to C:\Program Files\iTunes\ and right click on iTunes.exe then select Sent To > Desktop. This will create a new icon that should load iTunes just fine.”
I know there are more issues out there, but these seem to be the most common. If anyone has anymore solutions, please add them to this post. Like I said initially, I would like this post to be an easy reference for troubleshooting.
Thanks again,
linesma
Message was edited by: linesmaOk, so I saved my Windows Media Player playlist as M3U files and imported them into iTunes. Wow! What a complete mess that made of my library.
All songs that were on the playlists (hundreds of songs) were duplicated in my iTunes library. iTunes would show two entries for each song. When I right clicked and choose 'Show in Windows Explorer' both entries point to the same song, it just shows up twice in iTunes.
I cleared my iTunes library file and am starting over. I'm thinking about just going back to Windows Media Player. I've been listening to music off my Blackberry and it's really been fine. Just seemed a shame that my iPod was sitting in a drawer because of all the issues I'm having with iTunes and Vista.
The original problem I had months ago was that iTunes crashed on Vista and lost all my Playlists. I was so upset I put all my music on my SD card on my Blackberry, because Windows Media Player makes it so easy to back up your playlists. They are saved as files and can be included in any automatic backups (I have scheduled backups to another hard drive)
I thought with this new version of iTunes I could at least export the playlists to files so they can be backed up, I just don't know if I can face re-creating the playlists in iTunes. -
Itunes crashing at startup while trying to access Itunes Store
Hey all, below is a reply I wrote in another thread. I found a workaround to this issue that's working for me.. thought I'd also create this new thread... hopefully will work for you too until (hopefully) Itunes update/patch fixes the issue.
Hello, bump for me on this really annoying issue. Running Windows 7 SP1, fully updated drivers. Using latest Itunes, 10.7.0.21. Just like the others, every time I try to open Itunes, the Itunes store seems like it's trying to load.. and then I inevitably get the "Itunes has stopped working.. Windows is checking.. blah blah" and then crash. I have tried every fix I could find on these and other forums:
1. Uninstalled/Reinstalled all Apple software as per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925 along with CCleaner to clean up any registry issues (after uninstall/before reinstall of course). DIDN'T WORK.
2. Did the winsock reset listed here https://discussions.apple.com/message/17412059#17412059. DIDN'T WORK.
3. Corrupt User Profile (Kernalbase.dll) Issue: Did the renaming of corrupt Itunes folder listed here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-HK/w7itprogeneral/thread/be53aac5- c560-478a-9598-e0c6a33d9da7 and that worked the FIRST time after renaming the folder to Itunes.old.. i.e. opening Itunes after doing this was successful and thus created a new Itunes folder. However, after closing itunes and reopening.. I was right back to square one.. Itunes crashing. (This did "work" partially so probable that issue has something to do with Corrupt Itunes User Profile??) Ultimately, DIDN'T WORK.
*BTW, I also did a Run Diagnostics from the help menu of Itunes and got 3 green lights for network connectivity.. one of which is of course "Secure link to Itunes store verified". So Itunes is telling me it seems to be communicating fine with Itunes Store.
There's nothing else that I can see to do short of reinstalling Windows... which I really don't want to do.
HOWEVER, after some trial and error, I found a weird little workaround. It seems like the crash is happening upon the initial attempt by Itunes to connect to the Itunes store. Here's what I did:
1. After opening Itunes (and the initial opening event is so that Itunes tries to connect to Itunes Store -- this will happen if the last page you were on the last time you closed Itunes was Itunes Store), QUICKLY click on "Music" (or any other "offline" library) on the left upper pane of Itunes. This will take you to your Music library and Itunes will STOP trying to connect automatically to Itunes store. So now, Itunes is open at least. Note: Others have mentioned correctly that if you open Itunes with your internet connection off, it will at least allow you to open Itunes b/c Itunes doesn't try to open Itunes Store if you're offline. My workaround accomplishes the same thing while still being connected to the internet.
2. Now, if you now click on "Itunes Store" directly, it WILL CRASH as per usual.
3. Instead, click on "Purchased" which is directly under "Itunes Store". Click ok to the pop-up. Then, on the bottom right of the screen, click on "Download Previous Purchases". This will open the previous purchases page which is actually WITHIN the Itunes store. If you look at the left pane, Itunes Store will now actually be highlighted. You're now in the Itunes store.. just via the "sidedoor" if you will. You will also now see all the usual Itunes Store categories along the top of this page like the Home Icon, music, movies, tv, apps, etc. etc. Click on the Home Icon (music, movies, whatever) and VOILA, it will open Itunes store without crashing!
4. Now that you're "in", you can jump around freely during THIS session. IE, you can freely go back and forth from looking at your left-pane offline music library, movies, apps, whatever.. and click on Itunes Store in the left pane and Itunes will not crash... you know, how Itunes normally works!
5. When you're done using Itunes just make sure the last screen you use before you close Itunes is "Music" or some such. That way, you won't have to do the "quickly hit Music" the next time you use Itunes. It will automatically just go to the offline Music library and not try to access the Itunes Store. Then, just repeat step 3 and you'll be "in" again.
I really hope this workaround works for you until Apple updates/patches Itunes for those of us that are having this issue. If it keeps working for me, I'm gonna live with it until the next Itunes version update hopefully resolves this issue.
OH! PS. I'm also having the Apple Software Update issue mentioned here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4040994?start=60&tstart=0. I have no idea how to solve this.. wondering if it's related to the Itunes crashing issue. I'm also getting the error message when trying to update quicktime from the help menu here https://discussions.apple.com/message/19392457#19392457.Did not get any responses - so did some digging and found the answer myself in other discussions.
Close your iTunes,
Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now. -

Itunes crashes when accessing Store, also Iphoto won't open
This problem occurred after I had a Genius bar repair on the screen and bezel. Iphoto will not open despite rebuilding the library or trying to open from an entirely new library, or from a new user (error says kern protection failure). Itunes crashes whenever I try to access the Itunes Store with the following report, although it seems to update Genius with no problem. Please help; I've done numerous permissions repairs with and without the install disk, tried replacing both programs with previous versions from Time Machine, and don't know what to do now (I'm running Snow Leopard).

I have a couple of articles that may help you troubleshoot this issue. First, we can address it as an unexpected quit in iTunes, and use this article for troubleshooting:
iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1717
You could also address it as an issue with contacting the iTunes Store, and use this article to troubleshoot:
Can't connect to the iTunes Store

Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

I installed the latest itunes update, 11.4.0.18. Now itunes crashes every time I try to open it.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you've already tried a complete uninstall and reinstall try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT as you start iTunes) then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.
You could also try working through

Changed a setting and iTunes crashes at startup
iTunes has been running trouble free for months on my pc running Windows 7 Pro, until today. Earlier today, I went into iTunes preferences, playback, and clicked the box to turn on volume leveling. Then, as soon as I clicked on ok, iTunes crashed, and it crashes every time within a second or two of opening. The top, center of the iTunes window reads "Determining Audio Volume" and "Analyzing 1 of 440: Hold Me Tight" The Problem Details in the "iTunes has stopped working" window are:

I don't know what to do to get iTunes to stop crashing. I have uninstalled iTunes, downloaded and installed iTunes. I've tried opening iTunes in safe mode (control and shift). I've tried opening iTunes with the Alt key pressed. I've tried moving my iTunes music folder to a different directory in order to 'hide' it from iTunes. None of these things changed the crashing.
I'm hoping someone will reply with a fix for this. Thanks.Hello jsolo53,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Even though you have already reinstalled iTunes, I'd like you to completely uninstall the application and its supporting files by following the steps in the article below, and then do a reinstall.

ITunes Crashes when I plug in my iPhone - fault module: QuickTime.qts
About a week ago iTunes started crashing as soon as I plugged in my iPhone 3Gs
To the best of my recollection I had not changed anything.
iPhone is running OS 4.1 iTunes version 10.0.1.22 on Vista

I decided before I did any "real" troubleshooting I would do a clean uninstall of iTunes as listed in HT1923 then install the latest version of iTunes.
I just installed 10.1.1.4 but the problem is the same with the new version. Here is the crash report:

I have checked my C:\Windows\system32 directory and Quicktime related files present are limited to the three files I think I should expect to see:
quick.ime
QuickTime.qts
QuickTimeVR.qtx
any help would be sincereely appreciated!!!!
Thanks,
Jimb noir:
Thank you for the quick reply.
I did have 15 or so podcasts on my iPhone (sync-ed through iTunes).
On reviewing them I noticed that one of the episodes had a Japanese Kanji charatcter at the end of the name "ah-ha" I say that must be the one!!!!
Well I deleted that one podcast from the iPhone but it made no difference.
I then deleted ALL of the podcasts from the iPhone but still, I get the same crash on iTunes.
I get the "recognition beeps" that Vista has noticed I plugged in the iPhone, but the iPhone never gets displayed as an item in the bar on the left side of the screen, and then iTunes crashes...

After iOS 4 update on iPod Touch, iTunes crashes when iPod is connected.
I just updated my iPod from 3.1.3 to iOS 4, and after all of that, when I plug in my iPod Touch 2G [version 4.0 (8A293)] to my laptop, iTunes crashes. A window pops up saying "iTunes has stopped working," and then iTunes closes automatically. When I do not already have iTunes open and I connect my iPod, iTunes will open and then close a few seconds later with the same pop up box.
I tried seeing if it was a syncing or connecting issue, so I turned off automatic syncing and the problem still exists. Therefore, I think it is a connection issue.
*Note: When I was updating to iOS 4, I left and came back to my computer with it running on idle. Could that have had an effect? If so, how can I just redo everything?
**Another note that may be helpful is that while I do still have all of my music and videos in iTunes (which works totally fine with no iPod attached), the videos and music is NOT on my iPod. But, my apps all work fine on my iPod.
I would really appreciate any sort of help I could get for this problem. I was really looking forward to the OS update, but now I am disappointed because of this major problem.
THANK YOU for your help!I would try moving the existing iPod backup file to a safe locations and let iTunes make a whole new one. The location of of the backup file is:
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: If you do not see the AppData or Application Data folders, you may need to show hidden files (Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7), or iTunes may not be installed in the default location. Show hidden files and then search the hard drive for the Backup directory. -
Ok if Itunes 7.1 is suppost to work better with Vista why am I have more errors then I was before. Itunes crashes everytime I sync my ipod and now I can not even watch TV shows or Movies on my computer I just get a blank white window but the status bar is moving like the movie is playing. This is sad from a company like apple to have such problems!
I know its frustrating to have hardware/software and not have it work right. Our company had the same Pre-release software you spoke of and we still have Vista only issues that we have to deal with. MS isn't exactly being nice about Vista for drivers and all sorts of things. The reason being I guess is that they got tired of people complaining their software doesn't work. I think they would love a closed platform like Apples.
Keep in mind this is a public user forum. Apple employees hardly post here. The people who do post here (like me) volunteer our time. Keep an watchful eye on the Vista threads and it would hurt to repeat steps you already tired once in a while. I for one won't be upgrading to Vista any time soon or at all. -
Itunes crashes when iPod is plugged in.
So I just got a new iPod, 160GB classic.
It worked fine for a few days (although it prompted me to download itunes 9 which now makes cd ripping take upto 3 hours, but that's another story), I put some of the stuff I already had on my comp onto my iPod.
Yesterday I was asked to download the latest iTunes update, and now that I have (iTunes downloaded and installed it by itself) everytime I plug my iPod in iTunes crashes. iTunes is fine on it's own, but if an iPod is plugged in it just freezes and I have to close it using task manager.
My brother has an iPod classic 120gb which he's had for the last 6 months and he said he's always had this problem, only very occasionally has it actually worked for him (and even today, his iPod only has artists A-C and he can't update any further!).
These were both gifts and we need the problem solving immediately. We're both on different laptops (windows vista) that run fine with no problems regarding memory or anything like that.
ThanksI have an iTouch and the same thing happens to the 3 of us here. What wI do to avoid it is to manage your iTunes and all the changes first, THEN plug in your iPod. It doesn't freeze for me then. But, if I plug it in right away, it freezes. Hope this helps for you.

ITunes crashes about 50% of the time I try to sync
Hello,
Since the most recent update iTunes crashes about half the time when I try to sync my iPod Touch. I had the problems updating, but I eventually got through the error related to mobile devices.
When the sync works, everything is fine. Apps update and podcasts update. It seems to crash when trying to contact the iTunes store for Genius results, but it also just crashed when I tried to update podcasts without syncing (although my iPod was connected at the time).
Has anyone else seen an error like this?Hi LanternOG,
If you are having intermittent crashing issues with iTunes, especially when syncing or trying to contact the iTunes Store, and the issue seemed to appear after an update issue, you may find the following articles helpful:
