Vista 64-bit SP1 downloading

I suppose the rule, "All things come to he who sits and waits," applies in this case.
I purposely did not download the huge multilanguage SP1 patch but decided to wait for MS to offer me the proper update. This morning, after a small Defender security update, I checked again for updates, and the SP1 was available. For my configuration, it's 121.5MB and the download is extremely slow - not from my end, however: I guess the MS server is busy. It even stalled several times for a few minutes; it's up to 94% right now, and stalled again.
I will install it and report back after whatever happens happens

Took less than half an hour (Mac Pro, 10K Raptor, 6GB) for same 124MB size install. I like the way it actually prepares the update and doesn't try to make changes to the system and kernel until shutdown while it configures - I think it safer than 'live update' OS X has used, but I understand people want fewer restarts if possible. If being safe and operative.
Maybe because I did a test run of SP1 RC I sort of knew what to expect. 124MB seems to pack a lot (highly compressed). Apple combo updates have come in 300MB. I saw a 'warning' that Microsoft expected you might need 101-15GB of free space for SP1 for Vista Ultimate 64-bit, which means there really is a lot going on during the update, which is why I ran the SFC.exe scannow plus did a disk check ahead of time to be safe, along with cleaned up temp files and such beforehand.
I have the taskbar set to autohide in Vista, yes. But I have the Leopard dock also set to autohide.
With Winders, there is an "icon" for each open window, but unlike Apple, you have to look for it. It does not bounce.
I know better from past experience, but many Winders users do not know about the infamous pop-under. Why it doesn't grab priority and appear on top of all the other windows is beyond me, but again, with Apple, even with a hidden dock, when you need to do something, it bounces and grabs your attention.
The install time may be related to the HD. I chose the larger, (250GB) and slower HD for this MBP, knowing I would be installing Vista. I think it's 5400 as opposed to 7200 RPM, but I am not sure.
No matter, the system seems to be as good as it can get, and once again, I am at a loss to understand why Vista is so ragged on by people. I think it's a fine OS, and the fact that it runs well on a Mac makes it even more useful.
I initially installed it as a "toy" but now I am serious about it, and will be buying another external drive for backups. I like the idea that it has built-in full backup capability to almost any media, but who is going to use a bunch of DVDs? Even a set of Blu-ray DVDs would be expensive and silly.
I will get another LaCie 500GB drive, since the two I have are working perfectly with no problems at all.

    Hi all,
Bought a brand new laptop from an electronics store in Nov. 2010 with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit pre-installed.
All is well with being notified of all avail. MS updates and I am fully patched with all of them....except SP1. I have never been notified that sp1 was available to download and install.
    I have tried everything.
Checked "winver" and no sp1 is not installed
Downloaded SP1 from MS website which requires validation (passed validation of course) and tried running sp1 from desktop and get error "Directory name is invalid"
Turned off A/V and Firewall ran again and same result. Burned and .iso of sp1 ran it, same result.
    Ran in safe mode..same thing
Ran MS troubleshooter and updates are fine
    I have KB976902 installed
    Windows Update KB2454826 is installed
    Reset windows updates
    All drivers are current
    ran sfc/SCANNOW no errors found.

  • VISTA (32 bit) SP1

Over the 6 months or so I have read about various problems regarding installing Vista and also problems with the video card. Can anybody update me before I buy it! I would install it with BC v.2.0 and then download BC v.2.1. Are there still many problems or did SP1 and v.2.1 resolve most if not all?

I have noted that there was a problem with updating the video card and as I will want to run games that could be frustrating! But what exactly is the problem? I see from NVIDIA website that you have to be running Windows to download and update. So I will not know the extent of the problem until I have bought VISTA! I also have picked up that the download installer cannot "recognise" my card because Apple are using the "mobile" version for the chip (i.e. the suffix M). Can anybody tell me if this has been resolved because I am sure Apple will blame NVIDEA and vice versa if I have problems!!

  • Vista 32 bit sp1 hangs and printer not supported by a wireless network

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit OS and an HP Photosmart C4385 All-in-one Printer. Once intalled it was working fine until I moved. Now I have uninstalled and reinstalled it due to these problems. The Hp hpqddsvc.dll is causing a service hang on starting my OS and the printer keeps saying it is not a wireless printer. I let hp take control of my laptop for 5 hours and 3 tiers of techs later they got nowhere. Has this problem been seen by anyone and is it fixable?
    Sincerely,
    d_l_armijo

What type of personal SW firewall or security suite are you running on your Vista machine?  Does the hang go away if you disable or uninstall the firewall?

  • Cannot install in Vista 32 Bit SP1

    Hi
I've called support in the USA but they could not help.
I've checked answers to similar topics on this forum but to no avail.
    This is what's happening:
Download and extract is working fine.
When I click on set up file windows opens for 4 secs then closes.
    Things I have tried:
    Rebooted
    Rebooted in safe mode
Tried it with user account control on and off
Tried it with AVG firewall turned off
Ran system restore and re-downloaded again
Went into msconfig and disabled start up programs.
Any ideas? I want to try this product first before shelling out £££'s.

    Julian,
Adobe's Tech Support for installation issues is free. In my few uses of this service, it has been fast (even limited hold time), and they have quickly and easily solved every install problem that I've had over 20 years. I'd try them again.
You have already done most of the things that I'd have recommended. I don't have any tricks to try, beyond what you have already attempted.
Fortunately, I (and most of the people here) have not had any install problems. It is something beyond our expertise. What I do know of install issues, I've picked up in the various Adobe forums. Only problem I've ever had was a multi-version upgrade to AI, and my ancient S/N was not in the new version's database. Adobe gave me the keys that I needed in about 2 mins., with 5 mins. hold. Quick and easy.
You are posting into the best forum for CS3. Unfortunately, your problem is not, "where's the Ripple Delete Tool?"
Be patient, as maybe someone here WILL have had your problem. The majority will not. Sorry.
Give Adobe another call, and maybe you'll get a good tech rep this time.
Also, Harm was just stating what I did, but with fewer words (and commas!).
i Sorry, inside joke around around here.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Vista 64-bit Won't Update after Hard Drive Replacement

My daughter has a Satellite L305-S5945 laptop (Model Number: PSLB8U-107071).  Running Vista 64-bit SP1.  She got a message that Windows detected a problem with the hard drive.  After I ran the usual virus scans (no threats or malware detected) and chkdsk route, we were still getting the message.  I did a reformat and Windows re-install and still got the message.  The old drive was a Toshiba MK1655GSX.
I decided to replace it with a new drive, a Toshiba MK3259GSX.  Using the same recovery disks that were created off the old drive, I reinstalled Vista 64-bit SP1 on to the new drive.  Windows loaded fine, recognized the new drive, and then recovered all the Toshiba drivers via the recovery disks.
    ISSUES:
    1) As soon as it released control back to me, I immediately went to Windows Update to begin the downloads of all the updates and security fixes.  However, Windows Update remained red and informed that Windows could not update.  Then it gave me a error code: 8024A000.  It will not check to see if I need updates.
    2) I deleted the pre-installed Norton 60-day trial product (first with Windows uninstaller, then used Norton Removal Tool for all the little pesty registry entries) and downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials.  After going through a few screens of the SE installation, I got a message that installation had failed, and gave me an error code of 0x80070643.
    3) For fun, I removed the new hard drive, replaced with the old failing drive.  Still got the message about the hd problem, but had no problem updating  Windows or running SE.
    4) On the new drive, in glancing through the WindowsUpdate log, I'm seeing a LOT of 0xc8000247 errors (relating to datastore, getservicelist, queryregisteredprovider, etc.)
I am assuming-perhaps incorrectly-that all these errors are related?  Other than the updates, Vista is working fine on the new drive.
    Any ideas?

Can you give us more details about that situation, Mike? A picture would help. You can attach a small one by adding the .txt extension to the file name as I have done here.
In the meantime, try resetting Windows Update.

  • Premiere Pro CS4 eats my C: drive in Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP1

I installed Premiere Pro CS4 this last weekend 11-12 April 2009.
    I have a Quadcore 3.0GHz with 8Gb of RAM, a 150Gb C: drive fo rthe op sys Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP1 and programs, a 500Go D: drive for general data and a K: drive 2Tb RAID0 volume useable about 1.8Gb.
My C: drive was healthy after installation of Premiere Pro with tens of gigabytes free at least. Then I started experimenting with building projects. I put my files on a mix of the D: and K: drives especially the AVCHD video assets on the K:.
While importing these AVCHD assets I eventually got a message from Vista that the C: drive was full and I did a clean up and that gave approximetely 30Gb free, I went back to importing, in a couple of hours the 30Gb was gone, this can only be Premiere Pro CS4 eating the C: drive and never returning what it takes. This of course is a disaster precisely because it is my op sys drive and Vista will periodically want to make new restore points especially before applying downloaded updates from Microsoft. I ahve run also chkdsk and defragmenter with no effect. I think Premiere Pro is using some sort of secret work files on the C: drive somewhere and that they just accumulate, of course this would be a bug.
Support Center does not appear to let me open web support issues even though we are in the 90-day bug fix period and I have registered the product with the product key so that is another bug that gets in the way of fixing the first.
    Any ideas please?
    Thanks!
    Peter.

Yeah, I did not take backups that often cos I did not intend putting the machine onto the net, then I got this device that said it would protect against everything by isolating my machine and making it invisible, I await the analysis by the company but it does appear not to have worked, the only thing that works is very real physical isolation and do not use the internet at all from the main machine. Like I say it simply is not confirmed yet but neither is it denied. You cannot actually go so far as to blame Adobe because stopping hackers is the job of the op sys vendor really so I blame Microsoft, the only blame for Adobe is the policy that some functions require internet connection in order to work when they know internet is not secure, so for instance if you want to use the emulators for things like these mobile phones they want you to be connected, I tried that one phone emulator and it said so, I wish they just put all documentation and all software on the DVD. I can roll back to an earlier Vista version from a USB backup disk that is always powered off, then rebuild as necessary, but I want the security firm to see if it is a trojan in fact first and to see if it can upgrade the security device and provide a roll out of the trojan's work. Right now I am still scripting the documentary and this second quarter is getting this Premiere Pro up ready for third quarter production so I can be philosophical for now, but yes later I will get more disciplined. But at least now I (almost) know the security device is not the all singing wonder they said it was. Oh well. I use a second machine too, a PS3 with Linux, that is what I am using now, this one doesn't seem to get hacked even though it is my sacrificial machine.

Adobe deserves criticism for its shoddy QC, but not for maing you exposing your main machine at risk on the internet. I never do that, and I never have had a virus or malware on it--never in all the years I've been doing this. I have picked up a few on my internet machine, though, but they are easily fixed with the security scheme I use.
As for restore points possibly eating up disk space, which you alluded to earlieranother never for me. Restore points are a half assed measure at best. My security system is a full clone backup of my C drive starting the day I install and OS on it, and every time I add add a program, and every day when I am working a big complex project. Otherwise, once a week. It takes a few minutes only. That way I can restore everything in equally few minutes should anything bad happen, like poorly designed software affecting other software, a virus, malware, etc, and including drive failurewhich has happened twice over the years.
Don't get me wrong, a virus checker is very useful to a point, but real security design has to start long before you install one, especially if your machine is the heart of your business, as it is for me. What is that old saying? An ounce of prevention is worth..........

I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:

If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

  • FireFox 4 and earlier versions will not install on my Windows Vista, 64 bit computer. The file downloads and the file extracts but I never make it to the installation wizard.

I have tried to download FireFox 4 and earlier versions from several different website, thinking the files might have gotten corrupted, and each time I download the file the exact same thing happens, the file downloads and the file gets extracted but when the extraction completes the small window dissappears and nothing else happens.
My machine is a Windows Vista 64 bit system and I've tried downloading the file with my 32 and 64 bit Internet Explorer but nothing seems to work. Can someone help me please because I would love to be able to completely delete I.E.

Hi, thanks for your Flash file info. Well you must have been doing it right, since all of your Flash files for IE and FF are correct.
The SWF plugin for FF and the SWO for IE are also correct.
You shouldn't be having any problems with Flash Player.
What you can try is to turn off the hardware acceleration feature. Go to any video, like youtube and right click on the video and click on Settings. Display Settings is where you will UN check hardware acceleration.
See if that helps. Let me know.

  • Just downloaded Firefox 4 on Windows Vista 32-bit and its not working at all.

So I just downloaded Firefox 4 on Windows Vista 32-bit, and it's not working at all. I open up Firefox and there is not tab bar, and all the command buttons are repeated 3 times, and are on 3 different bars. This only happens with Firefox 4 and not Firefox 3.6.10. Also, when I go the menu bar and I try to click soething, nothing happens. I'm not sure why this is going on. Help anyone? Here is a link to a screenshot of my browser.
    http://img683.imageshack.us/i/firefox4y.jpg/

I have this too, but doesn't even startup now? I downgraded to the previous version and all is OK. I also have a 64 bit version of Vista and it seems to work "a-OK" on that machine.
Seems to me to be 32-bit issue.
    Editing this post:
I just seen a possible answer...Do you have roboform installed (in the taskbar also)? If so, try disabling it or removing it and try to start again. I said above that I have 2 units and on the one (32-bit) I have Roboform installed and it crashes, but on the other one I don't...so go figure.
According to the report I read, if you upgrade Roboform it should be OK, although I have not tested as of yet...I am still at work...
    Hope that helps...

I cannot install iTunes 10.5. I can download it, but when I go to install it says that a program cannot be run and it won't give the name of the program. I have the Windows Vista 64-bit system.

That would be my first guess.  You might be trying to install the 32 bit version of the program.
Update the thread with more info on your apple software etc if its a 64 bit install you're trying to perform.

  • When downloading 10.5.2 version of itunes to Microsoft Vista 32 bit it gets to 68% downloaded and hangs then eventuall times out.  No error msg given.  What is it waiting for?

When downloading 10.5.2 version of itunes to Microsoft Vista 32 bit it gets to 68% downloaded and hangs then eventuall times out.  No error msg given.  What is it waiting for?

Finally got it working, I had to delete two solitary files in an iTunes folder.
    C:\ProgramData\Apple Computer\iTunes\SC Info
Delete the only two files that are in this folder. Please note that it is a hidden folder.
After they have been deleted, iTunes should work (it did for me)
This may not work if your iTunes.exe process (viewable with task manager) turns off after the license agreement. I solved that problem by updating quicktime.
iTunes 10.5.2 doesn't update quicktime like all the previous installers did.
