Vista 98se file sharing - risks worth it?

Vista Home Premium on wireless laptop and 98se on desktop, connected to WRT54G V8. Internet is working, fine. Is it worth it to set up a local network between the laptop and the desktop? Any risks? Vista said something about files now being public but is that so? Any more than public being behind the Linksys route to yet a Verizon Westell 2200 router/aDSL modem? I did this a long time ago. I have to turn on file sharing between the two. I notice Vista has a program to theoretically facilitate this but would it work with a 98se computer. Any places to read up on this? I need to set up NetBIOS and get familiar with \\ for files and printers and drives? Not really crucial since I can use a 4 GB USB drive or DVD's to transfer files. I'm just asking in advance because networks can be tricky. Thanks.

Okay, I can activated Windows 98se and turn on the Microsoft protocols, NetBEUI, like:
* Client for Microsoft Networks
* IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol > Network Card
* NetBEUI > Network Card
* TCP/IP > Network Card
* File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
And I guess Vista might be able to see the 98se but then again, knowing Microsoft, they might play dumb.
Any risks here? For years I turned off all the above switches. Very few virus problems because I had little outside access. I kept the TCP/IP switch on for internet access I'm sure.
I can call Microsoft if this is complicated but then would probably tell me to OEM it. And their wizard should recognize 98se. It did not so hence my posting to this group. But I had not turned on NetBEUI so maybe that's why. I was using Vista's Easy Transfer. Maybe File and Printer Sharing pure might be better?
The FAQ's here don't address Vista but say to contact Microsoft. Yeah right.

  • Networking ~ File Sharing With Windows Vista

    Alright, I've browsed enough of the web and I've tried a lot to try and resolve this issue, but none of it has worked at all for me. Here's my scenario about as specific as it gets:
    I have a home private network consisting of two Windows Vista PCs, a HP Photosmart Printer, a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.9.1, and an iPhone 5 running iOS 7.0.4. The network is routed through a Medialink MWN-WAPR300N router connected to a Time Warner Cable modem which goes to the Internet. My primary PC, the MacBook Pro, and the iPhone 5 all connect wirelessly; the other PC and printer connects via Ethernet. All devices connect to the Internet flawlessly, and they are all assigned a static LAN IP address through the router because I portforward to one of my PCs, and the router requires it. The network was originally configured using one of the PCs as a Private network under the default workgroup, "WORKGROUP". Everything else router-specific is automatic.
    Here's the problem: My MacBook and my primary PC do not communicate over the network at all. Both the MacBook and my primary PC can file share with the other PC connected via Ethernet, and they can both print just fine. After using LAN Scan v1.02 by Nutec Apps, LLC on my iPhone however, neither my primary PC nor the MacBook Pro shows up on the list of LAN devices. But that's not all, the MacBook Pro always recognizes the other PC via Ethernet in Finder, and the MacBook Pro can be found in both PC's Network list. However, when I try to connect to it via my primary PC, it says that "[My MacBook] is not a valid host name." What?
    To futher satisfy my curious mind, I set up a small Peer-to-Peer network between my primary PC and the MacBook Pro via Ethernet. Both devices instantly recognized each other and connected without any issues. I was able to transfer files at approximately 100mb/s and I was stoked. I then disconnected and tried to transfer over the network again, and there was nothing there. I have even done ping tests over the network to the MacBook Pro's LAN IP address, and it came back with no response.
    I've restarted both computers numerous times, played around with file sharing settings, set appropriate sharing permissions, disabled firewalls, enabled sharing for Windows on the MacBook Pro, enabled file sharing on the Windows PC, you name it. I'm sure there is a small fix that I may have overlooked, but I cannot figure out what the problem is for the life of me. Because the operation worked via Ethernet, and it's working wireless-to-Ethernet, but not wireless-to-wireless, I have a feeling that the problem is related to one or both of the wireless configurations.
    Thanks in advance for any help provided, if there is anything I missed I will be happy to proivde more details per request. This issues has been bugging me for weeks now and it's time I seeked professional help

    Alright, I am still having the problem and I have the results of the ifconfig command if it will be of any help to any Apple techies out there:

    The section in question is where it says bridge100 because the IP address listed under that section reads 192.168.2.1, as previously suggested. However another IP address is listed above it as 192.168.1.104, which is exactly what it should be as I have it assigned via DHCP in the router. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, because this is driving me crazy.
    PS: I apologize for the confusion. I made a typo in my previous post about my MacBook's LAN IP address. It should be 192.168.1.104, not 103. I can confirm that it is listed as *.104 in my router and it shows *.104 on the above ifconfig. Please ignore the *.103, thanks

  • File sharing across a network --- Mac (Leopard) and PCs (Vista) -- problems

    Been trying to setup file sharing so that I can access an iMac from a Vista PC. Followed various help threads, and have a specific question as relates to setting the file sharing preferences. From system preferences/sharing, have checked "File Sharing", and the shared folders displayed are the default public ones for the two users of the iMac. That is what I want. I next click on the options button in the same sharing window, where "Share files and folders using AFP" is already turned on (checked). From the data I have read, I next try to set up sharing using SMB, checking on that option (cause I think I must do that - from what I've read).
    This is where I run into problems. If I just check for share files and folders using SMB, and don't check off on the individual user accounts, when I try to access the iMac from the Vista PC, I get a login dialog box when I click on the iMac in my network screen. Not sure what to do with that ... _as I only want guest access to the public folders on the iMac_. If, however, in setting up SMB I check on the individual user accounts (and provide the requested passwords), then when I access the iMac from the Vista PC, I don't have to login to the iMac at all .... but all folders/all iMac hard drive data is now available/editable to me. This is not what I want. Only want network access to the iMac public folders. But as I noted earlier, if I set up SMB without checking off on the user account names, then I am presented with a login box when I click on the iMac icon on the Vista PC.
    Have read numerous articles on this ... and think I am close. So ... bottom line ... want iMac access from Vista PCs but only want access to the iMac public folders. Don't want access to the entire iMac hard drive.
    Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks.

    Some additional insight to share. Some successes, but still some questions.
    Was reading around the web on this topic and found something that indicated that I should create a new, non-admin account on the iMac and make that the user that is shared. The other two users that I was attempting to share the public folder were both admin users, and this may account for showing all of the hard drive when I accessed the iMac from the Vista PC.
    So I created this new "standard" user account, and share that public folder, and it all works. Now here is the still questionable. From one vista PC, when I click on the iMac I get a login prompt. At that point I can log into the iMac or just access the iMac via guest access. Both work.
    But from a different Vista PC, clicking on the iMac does not prompt a login shell to appear. I just walk into the iMac shared folder. Do not understand this behavior. Would've expected that any Vista or windows PC would get a login shell when trying to access the iMac. That is not the case. Any thoughts why the 2 Vista PCs behave differently?

  • File Sharing XP & Vista with WRT54G-RG Problem

    I'm hoping a network ninja can help me out with this, because I can't figure it out.
    I have a desktop running XP Home, with a wired connection to the WRT54G-RG Router.
    I have a notebook running Vista that's wirelessly connected to said router.
    I have a Rogers cable modem hooked up to the router for internet sharing.
    I can surf the net fine from both machines.  I cannot file share.  On XP desktop, the Vista notebook does not show up in the networked computer map.
    On the Vista notebook, I can see the desktop on the network, but if I click on it, I get:
    Windows cannot access //basementpc.  Error code: 0x80070035.  The network path was not found.
    Suspecting my new router, I hooked back up my old router, and everything works fine.  So I hooked up the new router again, and continued to try to figure this out.  I notice one thing strange.
    If I run ipconfig on the desktop, it says that it's IP is 192.168.0.105.  If I view the DHCP table on the router, it says the desktop IP is 192.168.0.106.  I'm pretty sure these numbers should match, and I'm not sure why they don't.  They match when I've got my old router hooked up.
    I can view the shared folders of the desktop from the notebook if I open a browser and type in the IP of the desktop (using the IP number reported from ipconfig, not the IP number from the DHCP table).
    I've done a few things to try to get things working:
    Turned off all firewalls on both machines, including the router firewall.
    I've done an ipconfig /flushdns on both machines
    I've done an ipconfig /release on both machines
    I've reset the router, turned off wireless security (for testing purposes)
    The firmware on the router appears to be the latest v5.00.38.
    How can I get file sharing to work properly?  Not to mention printer sharing would be nice, but one step at a time!
    Thanks,
    Joe.

  • File sharing XP-VISTA (WIRELESS) WEIRDEST THING I EVER SEEN!

    Ok i said to myself lets give file sharing between my laptop and fixed pc a try with laptop running vista and fixed pc xp pro (always worked with xp-xp and just new WRTN150N).
    Not suprized off course that it did not work vista has been fine tuning from day one for me?
    So with my usual googling power and checklist I went to work
    -same workgroup (CHECK!)
    -NORTON (CHECK!)
    -FIREWALL(CHECK!)
    -WRT150N checking for possible security block(CHECK i think)
    30 min getting frustrated
    50 min the network map SHOW MY FIXED PC WOEEEEEHOOOOOO
    57 min BUT BUT why cant just click my shared fixed pc in network map 1h10 min found google answer saying they had to buy a new router (MY **bleep** IT IS brand new WRTN150v1.1)
    1h30 min crying on the inside has turned into cyring on the outside 1h50 plugged in vista in ethernet port EVERYTHING WORKED followed by lot and lot of swearing 2h05 double checked everything
    2h20 SCREW IT
    2h21 psshed said the intervoice inside my head ping!
    2h22 ping works fine (ZOMG)
    2h30 what if instead of using all the computer names you just type in the ip adress of the fixed pc said the innervoice
    2h35-2h50 why does this work why why why why why why DNS?????
    This is the network shown by vista when using ethernet I just click on icon of fixed pc below and bingo i have acess to share stuffers ethernet
    The following link is the laptop on wireless and for some stupid reason if i want to access shares it has to be with ip adresses wireless
    So conclusion
    sharing ethernet (just click in networkplaces,XP,VISTA)
    sharing wiresless (\\ipadress\sharelocation)
    ALL THIS MAKE NO SENSE TO ME!
    Message Edited by soulie on 02-05-2008 06:49 PM

    Your computer software firewall may be blocking the file and printer sharing. It was for me. Go into your software firewall 'Trust' settings and check to insure that the Linksys WRT150N physical address is 'Trusted' on all networked PC's.
    I had previously just disabled the firewall. Apparently that's not totally effective.
    Hope this helps.

  • File Sharing with Windows (XP/Vista)

    Hello all,
    I've studied various websites including the Apple support documents and I'm still a little confused about file sharing.
    Is there a way to share only certain folders via SMB with a vista/xp machine?
    E.G. can I just share my 'public' folder?
    I've managed to share my entire account. I've managed to create a new account, and share that.
    But what if I just want to share one folder?
    In the 'options' box you can choose 'SMB' then the accounts you want to share. If you leave the all the accounts unticked, then try and access the computer from vista, it throw up an error.
    I found this: http://tech.ifelix.net/3022.html which makes it all look very simple.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Is there a way to share only certain folders via SMB with a vista/xp machine?
    Yes. The easiest way is to use System Preferences -> Accounts and click on Guest. Make sure that "Allow guests to connect to shared folders" is ticked.
    Then, go to Sharing -> File Sharing and make sure that SMB is enabled. PC users should then be able to see public folders and write to drop boxes without logging in.
    To enable more folders to be shared, click on the "+" underneath the Shared Folders pane, and choose the folder that you want to share. Then select this folder to assign user privileges. "Everyone" is equivalent to Guest, so if you want guests to see your folder, make sure that "Everyone" can read.
    if you want the PC user to "login" to your Mac without using one of the Mac accounts, you can create a "sharing only user" by clicking on the "+" underneath the Users panel. You will be able to assign a username and password for this user. The user will then show up in the list of accounts to be enabled for SMB file sharing (after you click on the "options.." button).
    Cheers,
    Rodney

  • File Sharing with XP and Vista

    Hi, I have an WRT54G wireless G router. I have a windows XP computer and a Windows Vista laptop that I would like to enable file sharing on. I am having a lot of problems doing so. Can someone please give me instructions on how to do so? Thanks, Alex

    I have the exact same problem, XP desktop connected to WRT54G (wired) and a Vista laptop connect wirelessly.  Every thing works in that the internet connections of both machines work.  I cannot, however, see the two machines in the network neighborhood of the XP desktop.
    Before I installed the WRT54G, I had both machines connected to a wired router I previously used.  Networking and file sharing worked fine in this configuration.  Its only when I went to the WRT54G that I lost it.
    I'm sure this is a simple fix, but I can't fix it!

  • Vista file sharing with OS 10.3.4

    Are there known issues with Windows Vista OS connecting and file sharing with Mac OS 10.3.4? We can connect Windows XP with Mac OS 10.3.4, but two Vista machines cannot. Any ideas?

    Maybe a lack of support for something the Vista OS uses.
    Mac OS 10.3.9 was always mountable and writable from XP. I would set up a folder on a large disk on my MDD (10.3.9) for my wife to connect to with her work laptop running XP, to use as a backup area. Printing was also extremely easy from XP to a USB printer attached to 10.3.9.

  • File Sharing With the BEFW11S4 in Vista....

But when I go to the network folder the computers do not apper at all... I made sure they both was are in the same workgroup unfortunately the are still not visable to each other better less able to read or change any files on each indiviual machines. Does anyone know how I can make this computers visable to one another. I really wanna stop running up and downstairs to do thinks on each machine when I can share between computers and not have to copy stuff to a memory card or backup harddrive just to get the information upstairs.

    Go to network and sharing centre and turn on network discovery and file sharing on both computers.

  • Need help setting up a file sharing with VISTA

    Hi,
    Can somebody help me with setting up a connection to a Windows Vista computer. I followed all the instructions from this forum but still it doesn't work.
    Here is what I'm doing:
    1) Sharing -> File Sharing -> enabled
    2) Sharing -> Options -> activating SMB
    3) Network -> Options -> WINS -> "WORKGROUP"
    4) Network -> Options -> 802.1X -> activating 802.1X
    Under Sharing I see a lable which tells me that Windows user can access my computer via the address smb://x.x.x.x
    In Windows this address doesn't work and I cannot see my Mac computer nor can I see the windows computer on the mac.
    It worked so well with TIGER.
    Do you have set the DHCP to automatic address on both, Mac and windows or do you use a static ip address?

    In windows when you do "map network drive" you need to enter "\\server\share" (without quotes).
    In Vista, go to the Windows Button > Computer. The "map network drive" option is in the bar in the top of the window. You may need to enlarge the window or click on the little expand arrow to see it.
    smb://server is used when you're connecting to a windows share from the MacOS.

  • File sharing problems between Vista 64 bit and iMac

    I have a week-old iMac and am trying to completely network it with my wife's new Windows Vista 64 bit Dell Studio laptop. Everything seems to be working correctly with the exception of not being able to directly log into the iMac from the laptop even though the iMac is visible in the Windows Vista Network screen. File sharing is turned on with all user accounts active. Both computers are visible on the network. The Vista laptop has Windows firewall turned off and McAfee Security Center firewall turned on.
    Help and suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Worth it to upgrade to 10.6 for iCal/file sharing?

    We run a dual quad core 2.8Ghz XServe with a 4 drive eSATA DAS for file sharing as well as iCal. We've topped out at around 40 concurrent users with 5 shared calendars and 7000+ events combined across the calendars.
    Is it worth it to upgrade to 10.6?
    Here are our unsolved problems:
    1. File sharing used to be samba only due to the need to allow PCs access to the shares but Adobe products were locking up saving over the network to the shares so the Macs in the office now use AFP while the PCs still use samba. One of the updates appeared to have reported fixing some samba issues but I've found that Google searches of user experiences appear to vary.
    2. iCal pretty much maxes out all 8 cores with 50 users accessing the shared calendars via iCal/ThunderbirdPlugin/Sunbird. At this point some users start experiencing problems syncing the calendars and eventually very few people end up with calendars that are properly synced. No one uses the web interface and no one has personal calendars. No one has access to the calendars outside of the office or VPN.
    3. The other iCal problem, as I've discovered, is that settable permissions on the calendar really only apply to the web calendar.
    So I can set "Allow group members only to write to these services" and "Allow authenticated users to view these services" and that really only means for the web interface, and not the iCal/CalDAV interface. So if a user authenticates, but is not in the group calendar, they cannot get the calendar data. Since the calendar is under a group rather than a user they cannot be added to write permissions on the calendar (which I'm not sure work outside of the web interface either).
    Does 10.6 solve any of this? If we're going to max out at <= 50 users because iCal's python driven performance is so horrible we might as well setup with Google Enterprise Apps and use their calendaring system.

    If your TM backup is current, you can go back. However, IMO, a bootable backup/clone allows installing on either and immediately reverting w/o restoring if things don't work out. With a TM backup, you need to boot with the install disc, wipe the HD, and restore.

  • Windows Vista File Sharing?

    I never had a problem seeing my Windows Vista computer from my MacBook, but my MacBook Air cannot see it. The only way to connect to it is via "command + k" and using smb://IPADDRESS.
    I don't see that the MacBook Air has windows file sharing in the network preferences either... how do I fix this? I would like it to automatically show up in my shared items within finder.

    I have a MacBook Air and have a Windows Vista desktop I need to transfer some files from. I am new to Mac's and so to be honest do not have a clue how to get the files via a wireless transfer. I assume there is a way and this topic already started would be a good place to start. Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. I have tried a few things based on the help in the computer and reading around the board but no luck.
